So nice to see positive statements about Pete. Met him twice and got to chat for a minute or two each time, what a nice guy. He cooks here and having seem him play up close at a small venue called the Town Cryer in New Paltz in 2007 I can tell you that he sounded great, and had only good things to say about the other 3 Beatles. A true gentleman and unquestionably a big part of the Beatles early success.
If many people say you're bad after a while you start to believe it. You lose your motivation and faith. Pete had experience that. But it seems, this man was a nice man and his soul was beautiful. More beautiful than other members. I am glad to know this real star. Best regards..

Pete played this with a lot of punch and verve! Ba-BOOM! Enjoying this thoroughly. Got to meet him when he did a meet-and-greet after a gig by the "Pete Best Band" at Kelly's Logan House," a club in Wilmington, Delaware, maybe about 10 years ago. Very friendly and gracious fellow!
Knowing that he was in the Beatles for a couple of years, has probably given Pete a lot of work. But people aren't going to listen to his drumming. They just want to see an x-Beatle.
@@denisbrouillard5443 The same can be said of Ringo. And the same can be said of John's guitar work. Pete was plenty good enough to remain The Beatles' drummer. Martin said he was good enough for concerts, but wanted a pro studio drummer for the records. Martin also rejected Ringo's, "Love Me Do", bringing in pro drummer, Andy White.
@@denisbrouillard5443 your are wrong, a LOT of fans have listened to his drumming and enjoyed hearing him play with his band and having the chance to meet and talk with him. It's sad how some people here are being so harsh and unkind to him.
I'm glad that Pete always has a positive opinion on his time with the beatles.. He shows no resentment towards them for giving him the push.. And he always comes across as a nice chap
You've obviously never heard him being interviewed he's a classic fence sitter making occasional snipes about his ex band mates, he can go full on attacking them as this would damage his ability to make money out of it, most of the money he makes is from his connection with one of the world's most revered band's, so he's got to be very careful in what he says.. After Lennon died he claimed he was closest to him and they got on well and had many long conversations " Tell me more say the paying fans" But lennons dead and can't refute any of it.. He'll say how he's never spoken to any of the band since getting sacked and claim he'd played on the same bill as them a few times.. And this is told to blame them in a round about way, yet there was nothing stopping him confronting them in the months after he was booted. His answer was he couldn't get hold of them because they were this huge band who were well protected.. Yes afterwards they were but not straight after he was sacked, this didn't start to happen for a good 6 month's
@@alberttatlock5237 No, Pete said he tried calling them but none would come to the phone, AND THEN when they became stars they were well protected making it hopeless. When they play the first song (Cry For A Shadow) you can tell how bittersweet it is for Pete Best to kind of re-live those long gone days and all that "I could have been me"!

Because the only thing special about ringo is he played left handed on a right handed kit that's why he sounds different but not better just different noting special
@@ryanpurplenintendoeater9869 I'm left handed. I write, eat, and play bouzouki with the left hand. I am an ex drummer, and i used to keep the tempo with the left arm ( like Joe English of " The Wings") .Strange to regard " left handed " somebody that writes, eats, and keeps the tempo with the right hand, like Ringo does ( Ringo also plays guitar, with right handed position, like John and George, and not like Paul) .....🤔
Pete is much more animated here than when I just saw him in Cancun Feb. 2014. His brother Roag also drummed at the same time. He is a real sweet guy (got to spend a few hours with him and his band on a couple days) but very quiet and doesn't speak unless spoken to. I can really see how his personality (a loner) did not mesh with John, Paul & George. It was unfortunate, but true.
The things about Pete that upset the other three were more about Pete's being a bit self conscience. Pete did not want to change his hair because the girls thought it was cool. Pete had his own Fan Club. Pete was becoming the face of the Beatles in the press (Pete Best and the Beatles) and Pete was just hoping it would all go away.He did not want the attention..When the story broke about their recording contract it was only Pete's photo with it. That was pretty much the final nail..And Pete did not have a hand or say in those things that made the others mad. If they had only talked to him ahead of time so they could put up a united front it would have worked out for everybody...except Ringo..Lol. Listen to Pete's CD "Haymans Green" which is his first writing outing and decide for yourself if we have lost something we could have treasured had he been writing since 1962..The Beatles internal influence and the very lifeblood of the Band came to fruition in Hamburg. It was there the Muses blessed them and Pete was blessed as well. It is the reason Ringo solo stuff has never been Beatle-like and Haymans Green is a connection to the very soul of the Band that was the Beatles. And not like the fake copies many artists have tried and quite obvious when you hear but a TRUE Beatle who drinks from the Muses stream that was reserved for the Band alone.
@@sirflyingfingers I dig your comment, but one thing is not correct. Pete was never asked to get the moptop. Astrid even said that it wouldn't have worked on Pete because his hair was too curly. But yeah, other than that, excellent comment.

Bro not trying to argue here but just because someone has been playing the drums all his life doesn't mean he's excelled in that department. I like Pete Best. I think he's a kind man from what I've seen on these vid clips. I was just saying his drumming is flat. Old Atomic having fun ... good to see. His drumming was a big hit in 1960. Other bands were copying him. His drumming might have evolved if it had been able to focus on it through the 60s in the Beatles. Time has brought his contribution back into focus.
Not "might have", it did evolve. Pete soon after being sacked by The Beatles got his own band, Pete Best & The All-Stars. They quickly got a record contract from Decca, and Pete performed all studio drumming--no session drummers required. Pete wasn't sacked due to his drumming, he was sacked due to petty jealousy that he was far and away the most popular Beatle.

@@vettefool It was common practice for studios to use session drummers for young new bands. Martin used one in place of Ringo, after Ringo failed to impress him with his recording of, "Love Me Do", on his first visit. The next week Martin brought in session pro, Andy White, and Ringo was forced to sit in the control room and watch or grab a tambourine to be on the recording (which is what he did).
Nothing wrong with Pete’s drumming. The poor guy has taken so much s*** for years it’s nice to see him doing a solid job on drums and maintaining a sense of normalcy and pride after his unceremonious sacking at the hands of the “boys.” Rock on, Pete!
Being nearly 70 years old, Best's drumming is amazing. But even on the Beatles' recordings made when he was 19 and 20, he was already a good drummer. He certainly wasn't the first or the last guy to get fired from a band over a clash of personalities
I wouldn't say, "clash of personalities", Pete got along fine with the other Beatles, never having any fights or major disagreements. It was jealousy, pure jealousy on the part of John, Paul, and George that got Pete sacked. He got all the press (his photo only on Mersey Beat story about The Beatles getting signed), he got all the hottest girls, and when the lads returned from Hamburg the band was becoming known in Liverpool as, "Pete Best & his Beatles". How do ya think that went over with the others??
Ahhh looking this all delusional comment. Amazing? You know nothing about drumming. This guy couldn't keep the tempo and played boring pattern over and over again. Not on this video, not back then when he's got fired. I respect him as a person, and he seems like a very nice man. But yeah, lack of musical ability. None of the Beatles has musical education and were purely amateur when they started but they all improved their skill during their Hamburg touring. Pete did not. Not then, not even after 50+ years. If Mr. Pete were so amazing and popular why didn't he just form his own band right after the sacking to prove that the Liverpool audience love him more than the other 3?
@@Cosmo-Kramer please read tune inn, you will find the exact reason Pete was fired. I will that say if you remove half the facts it’s easy to make a Case for it being jealousy that got Pete sacked.
I don’t like it when people call Martin Epstein the fifth Beatle. No. There were six official Beatles. John, Paul, George, Ringo, Stu, and Pete. Period
Ol' Pete is doing a great job here. He's obviously sorted his kick pedal out in the intervening 50+ years lol. Seriously, Boomer-generation drummers from places like Liverpool have a "swing" in their playing that few younger musicians do. There are still some timing issues, but I'm really glad to see this, especially in that he seems to be having fun; his life -- post firing -- couldn't have been easy.
Pete Best seems like a genuinely lovely guy!! But his drumming was and still limited at best (no pun intended) and the Beatles made the right decision, albeit in a very cowardly way. Can you imagine what Pete would have done on 'Rain', 'Come Together', 'A Day In The Life' or 'Ticket To Ride'? I'm very glad he got a payout from the Anthology and that he has gained some recognition, but lets face it, he has spent the last 58 years being famous for getting fired!
I live near Liverpool, people here told he was sacked because he didn’t change his haircut to that new Beatles mop top image...he was a true rocker and great drummer too!
@@Mojorider622 He was never asked because everyone knew it wouldn't work on him--including Astrid who said, "Pete couldn't wear his hair down over his forehead because it was too curly."
Pete and his mum were doing the bookings before epstein so brian got rid of them both and any of their Claims to management money by sacking pete. I thought the early beatles sounded great with pete.
Aw man, stop giving poor old Pete a hard time. Yes he's not the best drummer, but nor was Ringo. There's a few out there that make a good living out of not exactly the best drumming techniques. But Pete gets the brunt of it. Remember, he helped to get the Beatles that Parlophone contract, nobody can take that away from him. And he's clearly having a great time doing what he does, and his fans love him for it.
Pete Best forever! Great drummer and very gallant as a young man, and as legend tells and happens in many bands, some member managed to put it aside, (and convince others) under the pretext that it "did not fit with the group's profile"... Hahahaa, these plants are widely used in groups, when teenage jealousy is born and some shine brighter than others
I see very little difference in his style compared to Ringos early days. Ringo evolved along with the other Beatles writing newer more political songs. Pete basically stayed in the past. Had he stayed in the scene and played with other talented songwriters, he might have evolved into someone more relevant in the business and commercially.
The Beatles in their career of hits, when in lives, never wanted to play those songs they recorded in Germany. Pete Best, in his life, has played those songs on drums with several bands in several countries, as a nostalgic show. I think Pete Best, when does it, he must to remember each moment of those old times, when he was still a Beatle in Germany, before John Lennon and George Harrison to fire him at the EMI studios, before the great time...
You can see Pete is enjoying every minute of it. I think he was a great drummer. If he was as bad as John Lennon said he would never drum like this. Why did Paul help out on drums to save Ringo. All just rumors. Paul was actually the drummer then played bass. All past now Pete was robbed of fame. I think Paul should return and play bass as a guest. Out of decentcy to Pete.
I really appreciate Pete Best and his drumming. It's interesting, something different from Ringo Starr though without judging either of them. I think I hear what Pete's doing on drums and if I'm not right I apologize cause it might be pin pointed but Pete's drumming straight out of his Heart. Hear it, see it, feel it. How good is that? Maybe that's Best? 🤔❤️

Good on Pete! Not the best drumming in the world but its great to see him without a "support drummer" playing alongside him, something Ringo has been doing since the Concert For Bangladesh (if anyone knows of any live vid of Ringo playing drums on stage without another drummer since that gig, then please send me a link!). 70 years old here too! Most importantly though... RIP Tony.
tyronerodgers Jup. I think Ringo's using a little help from his friends to often. He even plays other musicians (All Starr Band) stuff at his own concerts...
I have heard drumming is physically exhausting. Even the great Levon Helm of the Band used a second drummer, as did Graham Edge of the Moody Blues. It could also be, these men have arthritis and can no longer play with power anymore.
The Beatles made the right decision bringing Ringo in, but Pete seems a good guy. I'm glad he finally made some money from the release of early Beatles stuff.
I met Pete a couple times. Great guy took time for picture. And to sign everything people brought to him prob stayed 1.5 hrs after the show shooting the shit.
THE VERY FIRST BEATLES CONVENTION I ATTENDED IN 1992 THE FIRST GROUP WAS PETE BEST'S GROUP AND IT WAS A REALLY GREAT EVENING'S ENTERTAINMENT. WATCHING THE SCENE IN THE BIRTH OF THE BEATLES WHERE BRIAN HAS THE UNFORTUNATE JOB OF TELLING PETE THAT THE BOYS DIDNT WANT HIM IN THE BAND ANYMORE AND WAS BEING REPLACED BY RINGO WAS QUITE SAD. ON SPEAKING WITH HIM AFTER THE CONCERT (FOUND HIM TO BE A VERY NICE GUY) COULD UNDERSTAND WHY THE OTHER 3 CHOSE RINGO WITH HIS PERSONALITY WAS MORE SUITED TO THE BAND. IM PLEASED THAT HE'S ENJOYING HAVING A COMEBACK AND PEOPLE ARE ENJOYING HIS PERFORMANCES. enjoying hisSOME SUCCESSE DIDNT FEEL
it's not that Pete's a terrible drummer, but he's not good either. He's too all over the place. When get something of a groove going, he suddenly changes to some half beat thing on the ride cymbals or some goofy snare to tom roll over and over for a few measures. He just doesn't hold the back beat well and accent the song effectively. But I still love him as he is. He was a Beatle after all good for him !
Prior to watching this video, I saw a video in which Tony Sheridan badmouthed Pete Best's drumming. Saying that he would never know what it's like to be a great musician like himself. This man should look in the mirror. He's piss poor. Pete's a born rocker.
Sheridan's held a grudge against Pete since 1961, when Tony challenged Pete to a fight over an onstage dispute (Sheridan would occasionally join The Beatles for a couple numbers, and vice versa). Pete put down his drum sticks and walked out into the alley. The two young rockers went to blows and while Pete took some shots, he messed Tony up badly. Sheridan did not know that Pete boxed in school, and came from boxing family (his father was the biggest fight promoter in Liverpool). So I would take anything negative that Sheridan has to say about Pete with a giant grain of salt.
@@ricenglish4556 He is, I'm sure of it, I've encountered him before. Tony Sheridan se estuvo presentando en un local cerca de las Torres de Satélite hasta poco antes de su muerte, no sé si Pete venía con él, creo que no.
I watched a BBC programme recently (The Beatles, made in Merseyside) where at least two people said it was because Pete's mum Mona was very overbearing, and Brian Epstein couldn't cope with it anymore.
@@cheltenjones3215 There's an interview I saw ages ago (probably on here somewhere) when Pete's just been sacked, and Mona's with him, and let's just say, there is possibly a lot of truth to that!
Kate Thomas it is true. Epstein contacted other people about managing the group. In the end I think he thought the best way to get rid of her was to get rid of Pete. I think there was a lot of reasons involved. That being one and also the other 3 not really getting along with him. The band was starting to be referred to as Pete Best and The Beatles by some cos Pete was very popular with the female fans. Also there was one instance with an article in Merseybeat where they only showed a picture of Pete. So I think there was some jealousy involved also.
@@katethomas5712 That's wrong, Kate, Brian Epstein fought John, Paul and George fiercely in trying to get them to change their minds and keep Pete. Brian even enlisted the help of Cavern DJ and longtime Beatles confidante, Bob Wooler, to try to talk them out of sacking Pete, but they wouldn't budge. Is it true that Brian complained to a friend of his, the one you saw interviewed, that Mona was pestering him, sure, but even if he did say to that friend that he couldn't cope any more, that was typical whining by a very, very paranoid man. Brian LOVED The Beatles, and it would've taken wild horses to take him away from them, not an occasionally annoying mom of one of the band members. Lol
Qué pena Tony Sheridan , tenía una voz espectacular !!!!! Igual me encantó !!!!! Ésto es el VERDADERO ROCK N ROLL !!!! Los Beatles , lo perfeccionaron y pulieron !!!!!
Pete is playing great here! Don't think the wigs are quite doing it for the tribute band though! LOL! Tony still playing fab rock'n'roll guitar but the singing has left him!. RIP Tony Sheridan!
I just wonder what on earth is going through Pete Best's head when he is playing these songs. He must have had such a weird life, being a cat's whisker from fame, riches and immortality. It's credit to him that he must have got his head around it, otherwise I suspect he'd have died some years back from bitterness or a broken heart.
Dave Costello Yeah. It's one thing being canned from a band that falls apart a year later. But right after he put those tough years in in Hamburg he gets canned and within the year he can't wake up without his former band in the news and on T.V and radio daily. The whole country is going nuts over The Beatles and you're takin the trash out for pick up every Wednesday back home. Yikes!
Wayne Dent Before Pete came along The Beatles had already put in about 3 years of rough years. Their clothes were rags and holes in their shoes, barely eating. Pete Best came along when they had a steady income. That would make the trio totalling 5 rough years to Pete's 2 "rough" years.
Nothing wrong with this kind of music or Pete's drumming. I wish the Beatles would have done more of it. They really gave up on rock and roll to become a pop band in a very dramatic reversal from where they came from. It is a shame when they could have done both. I know Lennon had regrets about it. It would be great today if Paul would slim down his band and do some starting with his drummer getting rid of about half his drum set.
Well I watched an interview with Macca. He said they internationally tried to make each album sound different. I’d you listen to them one after the other they succeeded. All the way to the end each album progressed and sounded different
I loved this clip! It's not every day that a tribute band gets to play with a member of the band they're paying tribute to, even though he got fired just before they became famous. A lot of nasty stuff has been written about Pete Best over the years, but I've long thought that he was actually a better drummer than Ringo technically, though Ringo fit better in the band. He's in excellent form on this clip, playing his original parts on The Beatles' Hamburg records "Cry for a Shadow" (an instrumental co-credited to John Lennon and George Harrison, the only song on which they're co-credited) and "Ain't She Sweet" (originally sung by John Lennon). Alas, then Tony Sheridan comes on, obviously in a state of intoxication, making his way through "My Bonnie" (one of the six sides on which The Beatles accompanied him on those Hamburg sessions); a cover of Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" (one of the four songs by Sheridan without The Beatles that were used to fill out the LP ":The Beatles … In the Beginning"); and a bizarre cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" in which he sings the three choruses in reverse order. Another irony: Polydor Records released both the first recording by John Lennon (his vocal on "Ain't She Sweet") and the last (the "Milk and Honey" LP, taken from the same sessions on which John and Yoko recorded "Double Fantasy" a few months before his death in December 1980 but not released until January 1984).

Knowing that he was in the Beatles for a couple of years, has probably given Pete a lot of work. But people aren't going to listen to his drumming. They just want to see an x-Beatle.
@@denisbrouillard5443
I would say you hit the proverbial nail squarely on its head with that comment.

After Lennon died he claimed he was closest to him and they got on well and had many long conversations " Tell me more say the paying fans"
But lennons dead and can't refute any of it..
Well, after all these years, I’m sure Pete’s drumming has improved! I’ve listened to his interviews and he comes across as a very nice person!
He is indeed very gracious. Met him at a "meet-and-greet" he did after a gig he did with the "Pete Best Band" at "Kelly's Logan House," a club and pub in Wilmington, Delaware, maybe a little over a decade ago. Those of us who attended had a blast!
Saw him years ago in St Albans with his band and asked if we could say hello to Pete to one of his guys when they were packing away after,he said wait 5mins which we did them he took us to the dressing room to see him we had a chat and he signed a poster for me and a couple of other bits he was an absolute gentleman and so was his brother , we really had a good night!

Holy shit. He's 75 years old! I hope I can still drum that well at that age.
Ringo can't.

Great Drumming by Pete Best ! The Beat that defined the earlier Beatles raw sound🎉🎉🎉🎉

Yep, that’s why George Martin didn’t want him playing on Beatles recordings.

Being nearly 70 years old, Best's drumming is amazing. But even on the Beatles' recordings made when he was 19 and 20, he was already a good drummer. He certainly wasn't the first or the last guy to get fired from a band over a clash of personalities
Bob Turnley You hit the nail on the head!

Wow Pete I have always loved your drumming but thus takes you to another level - its all about Carma

@@PC4USE1 Pete is drumming a hell of a lot better than Ringo these days. Hell, Ringo mostly doesn't even drum.
Back in his younger days, like the Hamburg era Tony Sheridan was really a good guitarist, with a good voice.
I wouldn't trade ringo but come on Paul and John he was and is a very capable drummer. There's another reason for firing him
I watched a BBC programme recently (The Beatles, made in Merseyside) where at least two people said it was because Pete's mum Mona was very overbearing, and Brian Epstein couldn't cope with it anymore.
@@katethomas5712 now this reason makes sense since they used to play in her basement
Dave Costello George Martin said that he offered to build a band for and around Pete, but he self-pitied away the opportunity .

Nothing wrong with this kind of music or Pete's drumming. I wish the Beatles would have done more of it. They really gave up on rock and roll to become a pop band in a very dramatic reversal from where they came from. It is a shame when they could have done both. I know Lennon had regrets about it. It would be great today if Paul would slim down his band and do some starting with his drummer getting rid of about half his drum set.
yep but things move on just like smart phones
Well I watched an interview with Macca. He said they internationally tried to make each album sound different. I’d you listen to them one after the other they succeeded. All the way to the end each album progressed and sounded different
Cmon he's terrible...go watch other performances it might change your mind
That's a GOOD DRUMMER. Somebody hire him
I loved this clip!
A better drummer “technically” who couldn’t hold a beat! That’s crazy.
