    If you click "SHOW MORE" in the description above your be able to see Links to the Tools 🔧🔨🔧 I use. Also Clickable Chapters📋 📙 throughout the video and other Links 🎬 that may be of interest. I've had a few viewers request where they can buy the tools they see in some of my videos but it's not very clear that the "SHOW MORE" tab has a lot of information in that may be of interest. Admittedly the amazon links are associated with me and I would earn a small commission which helps towards keeping the channel funded.

    Unfortunately that engine is toast. Don't bother changing just the camshaft, the rest is toast too.
    I don't know the UK market but in The Netherlands this car would still hold quite a lot of value once repaired.
    For you its a numbers game I guess. If you can sell it with a profit after replacing the engine, go for it. If not, do as you suggested: mot it and sell for spares or repairs.
    I feel for you Mark, luck doesn't come your way often it seems.

      Love that last bit Lukas...........how can someone have 100% bad luck ??? literally every car I have bought has been toast. Ironically this is why I gave up buying cars that were over £1,000 as they were all toast as well so I lost loads of money. For commuting I have to buy my wifes old Renaults as they will be ok as she can buy a car and they are always great cars. If I buy a car on my own it will always be toast when I get it home. The older I get the more I believe we are in a simulation and I'm playing the role of a looser like Homer Simpson.

    I would sell the car as it is, likely the crank jounals and cylinder walls are busted as well.

    That's definitely been run empty of oil, I can't imagine it's an oil pump issue because it wouldn't have lived to do the 50 mile journey.
    The £100 camshaft won't be the end of your worries, don't forget the issues in the bottom end. The knackered big ends will need sorting.
    The engine is scrap, without a shadow of doubt, unless you went for a complete nut and bolt rebuild which would far outweigh the cost of another known good engine.
    I recently purchased a replacement engine for my 06 Focus and the advert included a video of it running which was very confidence inspiring, with a bit of luck you may be able to find one like that too for this?
    Being a 2014 car, unless you paid a lot of money for it, if you have to spend £500 on a new engine I think there should still be a healthy margin in it?

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  11 месяцев назад +1

      I agree the engine is beyond economical repair and way too risky for me to gamble money on. Maybe if I had a full engine rebuilding workshop it might be different (also if I had engine rebuilding experience) but for me as a DIY mechanic I think I need a new engine or to pass it on. It owes me £1,000 at the moment.

    Ok. Nice that you found it. 😊 Now if crankshaft is shot it is not worth fixing it. Maybe to remove big ends and take a look at crank. If they arent spinned over good chance is to change only the big end bearings and camshaft and everything will be ok. Used camshaft maybe on some renault breakers can cost few £. I think that you can fix it for very little money. This is old engine design and there is tons of them in renault clio2,3,4 modus, dacia..

      I looked on ebay for a second hand camshaft and they were around £100 but a whole engine with low miles are being advertised for £300 !!! I think engine rebuilding is outside my scope and I'm too tight with money to buy the car parts and seals etc that repairing it would cost. I really struggle to buy the right parts and keep loosing money when I do.

    I know you've been measuring compression, but I'd like to check the walls of the cylinder with a camera. And conection rod bearing check condition, I'm afraid there's more engine damage

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  11 месяцев назад +1

      That's why I'm stopping now and putting it back together. At the moment the engine still runs so I can possibly sell it and they drive it home but once I take things too far I will have an immobilised vehicle that will need pushing around lol

    I think I’m a bit like you .I’d compression test it , if that’s ok strip and inspect the oil pump strip off 1 big end bearing shell and inspect that. before you decide . You may put a new camshaft in it and it be fine. Good luck

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you. Ironically I have done compression and taken a look at the big end bearings in my precious videos and it doesn't look good.

    If you're planning on selling or keeping the car, I would go for a replacement cam, or a cylinder head. As the previous person has stated, go for investigating the oil pump. Could you now with spark plugs removed, spin up the engine and look for oil supply in the bearings of the cam, good look👍👍

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  11 месяцев назад

      Problem is a replacement cam is £100 second hand on ebay but a replacement engine can be had for £350 so my logic says just buy another engine but I tend to have a bad luck streak so I dare not risk buying a whole engine as it's bound to be knackered as well so I could see me ending up with 2 duff engines and just loosing good money after bad. The big ends look shot as well from last weeks video. The engine would need a real mechanic that can do engine rebuilds and not a unlucky homer simpson home mechanic like me haha

    Thats a mees, Mark. Oil pump delivery is top of my thoughts- Have you looked in the strainer? The oil pump would be next, strip and see why its not lifting, which I suspect id the issue.

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  11 месяцев назад

      Wrecked isn't it Patrick. I read somewhere that the oil pump is rarely the problem as it delivers volume but if the bearings are shot in the crankshaft that causes oil volume loss which in turn means low oil pressure throughout the engine. I put a clip up of the big ends under my 'shorts' and they seem fairly loose so I'm assuming oil pressure would be lost at this point.

    • @patrickjmorgan
      @patrickjmorgan 11 месяцев назад

      the oil was a sludge, from memory. Symptomatic of few oil changes. When that happens, the oil pump cannot lift to pressurise the oil. @CoatsandGaiters . You are correct that there's no quick fix as you are going to be at risk of something else. It will need a new head, not just a camshaft as the journals will be shot. The noise however does sound like the old MK3 Cortinas when their heads were buggared!-usually taxis.

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  11 месяцев назад

      I think it had fairly regular oil changes as I was doing some and a garage was doing some but I think the engine was leaking oil from the top valve cover gasket and they didn't keep an eye on things until the oil light flashed on. They had said it came on but thought it was faulty and asked a garage to change the oil pressure sensor. I originally thought my welded repair had failed on the sump as I repaired it a year or so before but it was ok. @@patrickjmorgan

    • @patrickjmorgan
      @patrickjmorgan 11 месяцев назад

      I remember the sump welding! As you know, bearings pick up due to poor lubrication/lack of oil. Some have said just replace the camshaft- This would not be my advice as the head journals would have worn. Those caps are plastic-guage fitted. @@CoatsandGaiters

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  11 месяцев назад

      Any ideas why the steel camshaft would be worn so much compared to the aluminium bearing caps? if the steel is that bad I'd have thought the base that the camshaft sits in would have gone ages ago before knawing at the harder cam. I think the cam just runs in the aluminium alone. @@patrickjmorgan
