Thank you Dr. Joe for bringing this important subject. The reason of taking magnesium during day or night is the accumulation of magnesium in the body. A high-saturated fat diet reduces magnesium absorption in the intestines. High sugar intake increases excretion of magnesium by the kidneys. Phosphates found in carbonated beverages such as dark-colored sodas bind magnesium, making it unusable by the body. All causes magnesium to stay in the body for anywhere between 12 to 48 hours which is the major difference in different people. The best is to start from very low dose, to continue for some time and then gradually increase. Another concern about magnesium is on how the body manage the time. High does of magnesium causes the time goes faster than it is.
I just started taking Magnesium glycinate each evening and My sleep pattern has been bad waking up and not able to get back to sleep. I will start taking it late afternoon and see how it goes Thank you

Thank you for this excellent video Dr! Just discovered and subscribed to your channel. I'm currently reviewing my evening intake of magnesium. Taken in the evening I've found that it doesn't help promote sleep so this is very interesting. My magnesium supplement contains, amongst others, 280mg of magnesium tauriate. I also separately take taurine and find that, unless I take the taurine in the morning, I cannot sleep at night. Taurine, for me, significantly negatively impacts sleep. So, my current line of investigation is to start taking the magnesium in the morning. After watching this, however, I'll need to change forms of magnesium to accurately assess whether it is the (Mg) taurate or the time. Brilliant info, thank you!
I suspect at the initial hours of taking it, it induces arousal (so fights with your usual circadian rhythm) when it is getting to work until it settles toward relaxation hours later
@@drjoetvMD I believe there may also be a phenomena by which magnesium supplementation can bring out symptoms of hypocalcemia in those who are already under consuming Ca. Anecdotal, but I’ve seen it happen to myself multiple times where it resulted with insomnia and anxiety (CNS stuff) which was relieved by supplementing with a couple hundred mg of Ca.
Hi Doctor, greetings once again... I do take my magnesium caps in the am...works for me! TY for the heads up..Great to be ahead of the curve..& U facilitate this availability quite well..B Well ,B Safe..Regards to All!!🙏
100% right. I took Mag Taurate before sleep, my sleep was worse. Then I changed to take it before or at lunch, the quality of my sleep improved so much.
I make my own magnesium water using magnesium hydroxide powder and carbonated water. Very cheap and well absorbed. videos online. Watching from the PHILIPPINES.
Dr. Joe, which form of magnesium do you use/recommend? I wasn’t sure so I started using whole food plant magnesium 250mg, which instructs to take twice a day; ideally with food. TBH, I don’t know if I “feel better” taking this form per se. But it is kinda hard to get both doses in before noon. Thanks
I am not a doctor or scientist, but I have read that 'whole food' is more of a marketing term. The manufacturer may start with a pulverized food base (10% I think by law) although have the same synthetically produced, standardized USP vitamins or minerals as the supplements not marketed as 'whole food'. Same with 'natural'.
@@drjoetvMD Thank you so so much Dr. Joe. I appreciated so much your content and that video was so interesting and it was what I was looking for. You did a good job of making this video on magnesium and explaining it well. Thank you for what you do for people, I am grateful. I have fibromyalgia, CFS' menopause and sometimes irritability accompanied by anxiety, so thank you.
I believed that magnesium also brings down high blood pressure. Getting so fed up with being bombarded with "wellness advice" that turns out to be wrong. Why don't we, for our own safety, just avoid ALL supplements?
@@yasminbarry7941 The body has millions of years of wisdom. If we have a good diet then loading the body with supplements - do we really know how they interfere with the body's balance - is just costing money and maybe our overall health. Many people take these supplements without knowing what the levels are currently in their own body. If I'm not actually deficient in magnesium why am I taking it? I'm just getting to the point where I feel I'm feeding "Big Suppla". $$$
Let me add that I started to take magnesium glycinate at night for sleep when I decided to stop drinking alcohol..it did help with my sleep and I just continued to do it now well after not drinking now for several months..and was confused about brain fog I had in the morning..I will take your advice now..thanks
Hey Dr. Joe, can you let us know which type of Magnesium is the best to take. A friend suggested Magnesium Glycinate, also the wonderful person that’s 87 takes it as well. I’m 60 and wondering which is best. Let me know. Thank you Doc.
i have found, and it has been suggested by many, that consuming food / snacks / supplements within 2-3 hours of going to bed, may affect sleep quality. in my experience with my sleep tracker, if i eat a meal within 2 hours or less of going to sleep, it will delay the onset of deep sleep for some time. and so i will end up getting less deep sleep, and less restorative sleep. this also shows in a higher resting HR while asleep, and a lower HRV. this is irrespective of what is consumed being magnesium or not. so it would make sense that it's probably not a great idea to take a lot of supplements right before bed imo.. i find magnesium malate to work best for my purposes, but it tends to be very energizing rather than sleep promoting. i take it with my meals earlier in the day and with dinner, but my last dose of magnesium is usually over 8 hours apart from when i go to sleep.
Priceless information, Dr Joe. I've been taking magnesium powder before bedtime, for the reasons you describe. But every morning I wake up tired, and yes with some brain fog. I'll be taking it in the morning from now on.
I take magnesium at night and sleep like a rock. I need more than magnesium, but taking it helps my sleep quality. Like you said, it's the results that matter.
I usually recommend Magnesium Glycinate or Magnesium Taurate. But I suspect from what you are saying your sleep issue goes way deeper than what Magnesium alone can solve. I don't like hyping things up as I hate undue hype for products. You need a whole sleep hygiene overhaul and planning to solve your sleep problem
@@drjoetvMD You are right Doctor Joe I have been going through a lot since l retired from my Job l was a caregiver and l miss everyone Thank you l am going to try Magnesium Glycinate.
Even though you’re telling us to take it before midday, you’re not explaining why. Unless I missed it. I usually take it at around that time but I would be curious why it is better to take it before midday.
Essentially my observation is that taking it at night interferes with Deep Sleep as evidenced by Sleep monitor devices. That's as good as my observation gets. As to exactly why it does that isn't very clear but I suspect at the initial stage the mode is excitatory at first before becoming more relaxed later on
Thank you for sharing. I was taking magnesium glycinate before bed and i kept waking up with insane pounding headaches. I didn't make the connection at first. Then i switch to taking it with food during the day snd those headaches went away!
I’ve always taken magnesium in the morning. I take the glycinate type. I do it in the morning to avoid it interfering with my statin and blood pressure medication at night. I have no problems sleeping at night.
Ran the same experiment on myself. Magnesium glycinate was just better for me in the morning or midday. Apple Watch proved it conclusively. Feel better, too.
I can confirm that I don't sleep well with Mg intake at night. I think that was the issue, so I can try taking it earlier in the day to see if it makes a difference. However, I tend to sleep well at night, but I often wake up groggy even after 8 hours of sleep. So yeah, I'll try your suggestion.
I will definitely start taking my Magnesium Glycinate before noon. I wonder if taking Melatonin works the same way. I’ve noticed that I become very sleepy 12 hours later after taking 1.5 mg of melatonin at bedtime. I don’t take both supplements, I alternate.
If I've learned anything from RUclips, it's that whatever I'm doing, I'm doing it wrong.

TY for the heads up..Great to be ahead of the curve..& U facilitate this availability quite well..B Well ,B Safe..Regards to All!!🙏
My pleasure
100% right. I took Mag Taurate before sleep, my sleep was worse. Then I changed to take it before or at lunch, the quality of my sleep improved so much.
Thank you for sharing your experience
I make my own magnesium water using magnesium hydroxide powder and carbonated water. Very cheap and well absorbed. videos online. Watching from the PHILIPPINES.
Thank you
I'm going to try this, thank you!
You're welcome
Magnesium glycinate or Magnesium Taurate

@@drjoetvMD Thank you so so much Dr. Joe. I appreciated so much your content and that video was so interesting and it was what I was looking for.
You did a good job of making this video on magnesium and explaining it well. Thank you for what you do for people, I am grateful. I have fibromyalgia, CFS' menopause and sometimes irritability accompanied by anxiety, so thank you.
I will certainly try that idea since I haven’t been sleeping well after taking magnesium at night.
Please do
Thank you for an outstanding and very informative video.
You're welcome
Wow! Thanks, Dr. Joe. I was taking Mag Glycinate at bedtime.
Now I know why it didn't work.
THANKS!
You're welcome
I believed that magnesium also brings down high blood pressure. Getting so fed up with being bombarded with "wellness advice" that turns out to be wrong. Why don't we, for our own safety, just avoid ALL supplements?
Potassium must outweigh the sodium for bp.
Life is learning - keep learning.
@@judymills2362 Thank you - feel I'll ditch the magnesium. This video bothered me. I have a healthy diet.
I got to that point. So many contradictory opinions.
You're welcome
Thanks so much Doc. I’ve been taking mine in the evening and have been waking up around 2:3am and 3:am. I would definitely take your recommendations.❤

Thank you so much. Vital information 🙏🏾❤️

Excellent
Priceless information, Dr Joe.
I've been taking magnesium powder before bedtime, for the reasons you describe.
But every morning I wake up tired, and yes with some brain fog.
I'll be taking it in the morning from now on.
Thank you
Has the quality of your sleep improved?
I take magnesium at night and sleep like a rock. I need more than magnesium, but taking it helps my sleep quality. Like you said, it's the results that matter.
Thank you
Taking at night I have bad dreams and feel horrible the next day. Groggy, brain fog and drag. It’s awful!
Thank you for sharing that
I will try this. I have been taking magnesium at bedtime. Thank you

My wife and are senior citizens and we take mag at night for leg cramps and it helps with that. What would you reccomend instead?
If it's working for you, then of course continue
Yes and yes for me it does. Since I stopped taking magnesium at night my sleep is much better, camomile tea for me personally is where it’s at.
Thank you for sharing that
What the best magnesium to take Doctor Joe l am usually awake all night thank you for sharing this information ❤
Thank you doctor Joe. Is it helpul to take melatonin supplement? Can Can it
I am not a fan of melatonin supplement for sleep for a variety of reasons
Even though you’re telling us to take it before midday, you’re not explaining why. Unless I missed it. I usually take it at around that time but I would be curious why it is better to take it before midday.
Essentially my observation is that taking it at night interferes with Deep Sleep as evidenced by Sleep monitor devices. That's as good as my observation gets. As to exactly why it does that isn't very clear but I suspect at the initial stage the mode is excitatory at first before becoming more relaxed later on
Thanks a lot, good info, will try it out❤❤❤
You're welcome
I'm 79 and I have found earlier in the day works better for me. Everyone is different.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing. I was taking magnesium glycinate before bed and i kept waking up with insane pounding headaches. I didn't make the connection at first. Then i switch to taking it with food during the day snd those headaches went away!
Awesome. Glad to hear that
I’ve always taken magnesium in the morning. I take the glycinate type. I do it in the morning to avoid it interfering with my statin and blood pressure medication at night. I have no problems sleeping at night.
Excellent
Ran the same experiment on myself. Magnesium glycinate was just better for me in the morning or midday. Apple Watch proved it conclusively. Feel better, too.
Awesome. Thank you for the feedback
That makes some sense, since minerals should usually be taken with food and taking it at lunch would be better than late at night on an empty stomach.
Thank you
Thanks for the advice!
You're welcome
I will take your advice and try this, thank you.
You're welcome
Thanks for the info joe on magnesium.I take glycinate night b4 bed and i can sleep forever trouble waking up.. I'll try daytime cheers.
Okay. Thank you
I can confirm that I don't sleep well with Mg intake at night. I think that was the issue, so I can try taking it earlier in the day to see if it makes a difference. However, I tend to sleep well at night, but I often wake up groggy even after 8 hours of sleep. So yeah, I'll try your suggestion.
Good idea
I will definitely start taking my Magnesium Glycinate before noon. I wonder if taking Melatonin works the same way. I’ve noticed that I become very sleepy 12 hours later after taking 1.5 mg of melatonin at bedtime. I don’t take both supplements, I alternate.
Thank you
Thank a lot for this information, from Mauritius
