- This side-by-side comparison explores further differences between The Exorcist III Theatrical Version and the newly produced director's cut, "Legion." While this is not a paid advertisement for Shout Factory, I feel very enthusiastic about their work on this new version and hope this video isn't taken down, as it falls under the criteria for Fair Use in criticism and education. That said, pick up the Blu-ray, it's fantastic.
The Director's cut would have been too confusing with Dourif filling both roles of Father Karras and the Gemini killer. The theatrical cut with Jason Miller returning as Karras definitely makes it quite clear the Gemini killer had possessed his body.
its not just that its more fun in the theatrical cut an cooler to see it switch from one actor to the other
Especially since Kinderman is also played by a different actor than in the original one.
But the director's cut has the question: "Is Karras crazy or really he is the gemini killer?", more misterious. Anyway, i prefer the theatrical version, a best Brad Dourif acting.
Once again, it's an engrossing exercise in comparison. All in all, I think Brad Dourif's mesmerizing and measured performance in the theatrical cut is the superior one, and not just because the sound department modulated his voice to sound lower-pitched; he really comes across as older, stronger, madder and more depraved in the second version. The visual framing is more striking too, with Kinderman and the Gemini killer at times seemingly facing each other across an abyss.
I prefer the Exorcist 3 version of his performance also, but I think that they're both very legitimate looks at the character. In the Legion version, he's a more "realistic" sociopath, who you could see blending well into society. My uncle was the one who got me into The Exorcist films, so we watched the Director's Cut together and I think I mentioned to him that in Legion, Brad Dourif seemed almost childlike in a way.
the entire theatrical cut is better i have been wanting to see the original cut for a long time if this is close to it then i can see why the studio changed it an they did it for the better
the performances are better in the theatrical version
No. You're referring to the closeups that make it seem like a better performance.
They’re two very different beasts in regards to Patient X.
One commenter likened it to Brian Cox VS Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecktor/Lecter, (which is quite fitting given that character is also locked up in a mental hospital) because on the one hand you have the original “Legion” performance (the equivalent to Cox) which is subdued, and closer to what the Gemini killer might behave like were he real, and on the other you have Dourif’s more dramatic performance in the Theatrical cut (equivalent to Hopkins) which is done to provide an immediate contrast (compare his line “No I am not, I am alive!” from both versions as an example) to Jason Miller and establish a more credible threat of maniacal danger.
Both performances have their strengths, although I personally prefer the Theatrical, I think regardless of Dourif’s own opinions on the matter, his delivery just clicks in the Theatrical Cut.
So it's Karras speaking the whole time from the Lieutenent's perspective, right?
Skar800 yes
perhaps
i love the constant tears on his face
Dourif does that in many movies, I think he can do it on demand, without actually "crying"
Gotta say, I think Brad's acting in the theatrical version is much better. Much more dramatic and the performance is downright hypnotic!
I knew that was Colleen Dewhurst's voice used in the movie.
This movie is so underground! It's my favourite movie of ALL time! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Doesnt even include the alternate ending like wtf
I didn't see the director's cut of Exorcist 3. I've seen director's cuts of The Exorcist, Superman I and II, and Lethal Weapon 2.
original is always better
False...
I would argue not really in this case. The “Directors Cut” isn’t really that, it’s a cobbled together workprint of a film that attempts to recreate Blatty’s original vision, which was purely to make an adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s Legion, not the third Exorcist film.
This of course explains many things, such as why originally in Legion Brad Dourif was always playing Damien Karras and not just the physical embodiment of the Gemini Killer trapped in the body of Karras (as played by his original actor Jason Miller in the theatrical cut) because it wasn’t really meant to be a sequel to the Exorcist film, just an adaptation of the sequel to the Exorcist novel.
The theatrical cut despite studio interference (that actually created some really great things such as the Miller/Dourif combination for Patient X’s performance, the cell redesign, and many other subtle additions) is really the superior film in my eyes.
This entire scene is annoying!!!! Sooo fuckinnggg lonnnngggg monologueeeeee
Mist have been uncomfortable filming with wet hair in sweat pants and sweater.
All the people saying the theatrical is better FYI... The photography shots make his performance look better because of the closeups used. Get a brain people.
No not really the first time was kinda like a practice and plus if they finished the affects for the first one the theatrical version would have probably still been better also because the second time they brought in Jason Miller there’s no comparison it was a great idea to do it again with Jason Miller as Karris and his performance just seems better the second time he acts more crazy
