Thanks a lot and it's been so long since I made that video I'm embarassed to admit I had to go back and watch it to remind me what she did. I'm glad I did.
I'm truly full of joy to have found this series! I teach illustration and I'm currently sitting at my desk, illustrating a picture book with lots of animals, these videos and all the gems hidden in them, are just an absolut delight to discover and also a really inspiring work companion. Thank you so so much for such an incredibly valuable work! :D
Hello and many thanks for your appreciative comments about the channel. It's a real pleasure to know that viewers such as yourself value what I'm trying to achieve.
Many thanks for your comment. She's on my list of illustrators to attempt to make a solo video about - I just hope I can track down enough information and good quality pictures. Fingers crossed.
I'm really glad I found your channel. I've randomly watched a few of your uploads, and have decided to start from the beginning and watch them all. I hope I live long enough to enjoy them all, and you to produce many more. Cheers.
@@petebeard You said at end of this episode about wanting to finish the series, which made me smile, and is why I mentioned it. I recently took up painting, quite late in life. I used to draw as a kid, and loved comic characters and old illustrative art, such as used to be on Airfix and Meccano boxes. I really like your videos. They are educational, nostalgic and inspiring. Thank you.
Really enjoy this series!! I stumbled onto your videos while exploring examples of illustrators of the Golden Age as i am hoping to emulate their illustrations for my own children's book. And yet...Although your compilations are visually inspiring, thoughtful, and important, I cannot help but feel a bit defeated before I even start...the world has not kind to some extremely talented people. The take-away for me is: artists must do their craft for themselves alone. The world is taciturn and will probably not embrace your legacy.
Hello and many thanks for your positive comment about the channe, and I hope it does provide inspiration. A couple of thoughts which of course you are free to ignore... You're right that the world can be unkind to those with great talent, but there are also many who have achieved great success who in technical terms couldn't hold a candle to the golden age illustrators. And even back then a 'proper' artist such as Edward Lear enjoyed far greater success with his scratchy doodles for children. And you are absolutely right that you do it for yourself in the hope that others will enjoy it. In the end it's dumb luck I think.
@@petebeard Thanks for your response! I agree "success" seems it is a matter of dumb luck and maybe who you know, in certain cases. As a friend and fellow artist once told me, "That's why Real artist have day jobs." Anyway, I will continue to enjoy and absorb the content you are creating!!! It has helped me identify and marinate a few ideas I want to use for my second children's book. Hope that fills your bucket, just a little. Many Thanks, Sparky
This is already the most inspirational art related series I’ve ever seen and it’s only part 5. I’ve been drawing along with each video and taking elements from whoever you’re talking about at the time.

I’m so glad your channel keeps popping up! I really enjoy it. I use words, and have always been somewhat jealous of the magic of art and in particular, illustrations.
Thanks again for your continued support. I've always felt the old 'a picture is worth a thousand words' adage held a lot of water, but as a lifelong illustrator and illustration enthusiast I'd be bound to say that.
@@petebeard In the pre-literacy times of the old masters, their paintings were indeed communicating a thousand words. And when I listen to your commentary and consider my reaction to the illustrations, their meanings are not lost through time or blunted through language.

Fantastic. Please Mr. Beard (I have my fingers crossed) continue with your great work. (p.s Would dearly love to see you produce a video of your personal observations/favourites of the illustrators. Hohenstein & Bull I had not heard of. They each were very impressive to me as I watched. I especially enjoy the Art Nouveau period as it made even advertising look pleasing. Leslie Thrasher I heard very little of. His talent & style is on par with Norman Rockwell. If only he didn't pass early.
Hello, and thanks for the comment again. In the unsung series there are dozens of these 'lesser' Rockwells, and more in the pipeline. I think there must have been a factory somewhere in the states churning them out. It's an almost exclusively American phenomenon.
Pete Beard-Illustrations Hello, Pete… In the first place, English is not my native language so I’ll do my best trying to express my ideas. I am from Argentina (altough my name may suggest otherwise). I am 72 years old (born in 1949), and I have worked all my “working years” as an illustrator (of some kind or other). I am retired now, and very active in working for myself (illustrating my own things, so to speak). (Those of my every day life, of my feelings, of my mind…) When I started, in my early 20’s (in the early 1970’s) there were no schools for this kind of stuff (if you wanted to draw Comic Strips or Cartoons you had to go to an Art School -not many, though; and if you wanted to learn Graphic Design you had to study Architecture). So I learned by working, looking, and exchanging with my friends of this trade the “discoveries” we had made. And, of course, there was no Internet! The things that you are sharing in this “Unsung Heroes” series (so thoroughly and so lovingly presented) would, at that time, have blown our heads!!! They still do today! Thank you! Douglas Wright
Hello Douglas and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I did assume you were British or American because of your name and your English is so good. It seems we have quite a lot in common despite our nationalities. I was born in 1950 so we are about the same age and generation. I did study graphic design (cartoons were not encouraged) but worked as an illustrator for 42 years and retired in 2016. I also taught the subject at university for 15 years. I took a look at some of the videos on your channel and I see that you are producing music videos with your artwork, and I did a few cover versions of favourite songs when I first set up my channel but didn't get many views. That was when I had the idea to make videos about illustration. I'm very glad you found the channel and that you enjoy the content, and I hope you will continue to find it of interest. And good luck to you too from cold wet England.
Hello, Pete… Quite a lot in common, yes! I started free-lancing in 1973, aproximately. And retired in 2015. I came accross your videos in RUclips, and started watching them as they appeared. Then I noticed that one was Nº 55 (or something like that) so I started from the beginning. It’s quite impressive the amount and quality of the material you are presenting! I noticed that in one of them (those that came at random) your name appeared in the credits of the music too. (But then I looked again in others and didn’t find it.) Those “of your favourite songs”, are they still available? In my case, I started the RUclips channel in 2019. Most of my work was published, until then, in my two blogs (started in 2009 -so there’s a lot of stuff there). One has to do with children: El Jardín de Douglas. The other, with adults: Otros Douglas. (Both in Spanish.) Good luck to you too! Douglas Wright
Hello again and many thanks for the links to your blogs. I can see how your style is perfect for children, and like many of the best cartoons it gets right to the point. Sadly my poor Spanish means I generally don't understand it but it still makes for nice viewing. And yes the music tracks are still up there with pitiful viewing figures. If you search for pete beard 2000 light years from home or pete beard first we take manhattan that will take you to that obscure part of the channel with luck.
Brunelleschi is particularly interesting. This is 3 years old and it seems you are now going even stronger! But, finishing the list ...? I doubt you even wish to do so.
I'm sorry to say it's not an area I know anything about. There must be some information out there somewhere, but I'm guessing that these kind of illustrators are even less well known.
