    This collection of brief visual essays on illustrators and their art is one of the most wonderful presentations on RUclips - as said, a picture is worth a thousand words, and illustrators speak through the drawings they provide to illuminate the ideas and words of the authors - your bringing to light so many artists that have affected my own mental perceptions of written words and ideas is greatly appreciated

    What a monumental and wholly worthwhile undertaking! In the '90s, after finding 1938 FORTUNEs in a recycling dumpster, I began a nightly circuit of local recyc spots, climbing into dumpsters to dig for old pulp. In 10 years, I amassed volumes of advertising illustrations from the '20s to the '80s. Now I can find out who created these wonderful works! Thanks so much.

    Here we go again...
    another outstanding video introducing me to even more wonderful illustrators that I'd never heard of before, and often who's work I recognized seeing before this program.
    I just love Zim's work, with his whimsical illustrations and his fun caricatures. It's no wonder people sought out his talent to have their stories penned by him!
    His ability to tell a story with his drawings, and add a twisted element to add that extra flair is just incredible! It makes you closely study everything in the illustration, for fear of missing some minute hilarious detail!
    and Harry Roundtree's animals are outstanding! Your narration hits it right on the head in where he could draw an animal with seemingly human gestures, but still maintain the animal's natural body forms. That just blows me away!
    I'd bet that these were fun guys to have a conversation with. I'm sure they had crazy perspectives on just about any subject.
    OK Mr Beard, you've done it again. Great job with this video!

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  Год назад +2

      Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation and consideration of the work of these illustrators. Both Zim and Rountree are just my kind of humorous illustrators and I'm glad you also like their work. I'm now re-visiting some of these early unsung heroes at greater length, just like I have with Pogany, and if I can find enough additional material both of them would be ideal candidates.

    This is what RUclips does best! A marvellous clear "authored" piece. Any broadcast TV programme on the subject would be over-produced, limited by time, and suffer the interference of executives.
    I came here from your excellent Heath Robinson video, and was slightly awe-struck when I saw there were over 40 of these. It's disconcerting to realize that for every illustrator whose work you know, there are dozens of really good ones whose work you don't. It's much the same for actors.
    Thank you --- I have many hours of fascinating viewing ahead.

      @@petebeard One thing that would be much appreciated --- an index of which artists are featured in each of these videos. In fact, you are so prolific, I suspect we would all like to have a web site (needing frequent updating) that functions as a contents list and index for all your videos. Perhaps this already exists, and I have not found it.
      I still have a couple of books from childhood (and what a huge impact illustrations can have at that age): one is called "Humors of History" with gloriously funny illustrations by Arthur Moreland. The other is a book of Stanley Holloway monologues (The Lion & Albert etc) illustrated by John Hassall.
      I am also a big fan of humourous cartoons and I imagine that the line between them and illustrations must sometimes be hard to define, and be the cause of much discussion. Is Pont a great cartoonist but a poor illustrator? What about H.M. Bateman and Gerard Hoffnung?

    I embarked on your voyage through these unsung illustrators by chance and haphazardly followed on, wonderful idyls from the daily drudgery. It was many months later (also known as today) before I watched your first 'Unsung heroes'. Usually when I develop these kinds of interest I get obsessively academic and start at the beginning and move through to the end. I hope you won't be offended, but I think I will just continue to enjoy your reviews of these artists as a semi-random sampling. If you ever produce a magnum opus, then I will certainly subscribe, but the unpredictable nature of each of your parts have been very satisfying each and of themselves. Thank you very much.

Then,imagine my surprise and delight while listening to one of your illustration installments some tunes that I recognized a certain style of elec. guitar reminiscent of say Eric Clapton and Cream maybe,but I just couldnt pinpoint the artist,until I eagerly awaited the end credits,or maybe it wasnt listed,buf I discovered thst YOU are also a musician,as well as a great narrator...! So! There ya go,a mukti-talented gentleman putting your skills to good use! One of these days I will make a effort at figuring out how to add my own composition(s)? to videos,,,once I teach myself how to do THAT..for some far future ( retirement projects) when I think of how I want to create,and equipment that's affordable...

    Thanks for recommending Harry Rountree. I would agree that his work was superior to Beatrix Potter and although I dearly love her art and stories, I find it terribly sad that Potters contemporaries work is largely ignored and forgotten while hers continues to generate new fans with every passing generation. I think the National Trust has a good deal to do with that.

      Hello again, and it seems to me that there is a tendency to devolve illustration and its various styles into one representative figure for each. What you say about Beatrix Potter Inc. is absolutely true, and it's just as true of Mucha and Rockwell. It's actually one of the main motivations for the channel - to remind people that there were others who could be said to have just as much value. Thanks again for your interest and long may you enjoy deserved success.

    A most worthy project with which to occupy one's energy. I once owned a 2-volume set of the *1001 Nights,* and I presently possess my grandfather's copy of the *Rubaiyat,* both with Szyk's glorious illustrations therein. Also, I have the edition of *Gulliver's Travels* illustrated by Pogany. And, being interested in history, I have often run across topical cartoons from *Puck* and *Judge* that delighted me. Glad I am to see these talented men opened to the renown they deserve, and I eagerly anticipate the rest of the series (which by now, I see, is *quite* extensive). Well done, sir - and if you haven't already, examine the work of my grandfather's colleague Duane Bryers (1911-2012) and his plump, jolly pin-up girl Hilda! 😏 😍 😁

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  2 года назад

      Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of the channel, and what I'm trying to accomplish with it. Coincidentally another viewer recently mentioned Duane Byers and Hilda, neither of whom I had previously encountered. Unfortunately he was born in 1911, which puts him precisely one year too late to be eligible for this series. This may seem pedantic on my part but as it is with a window between 1850 and 1910 I still have more to do than I have already done. And I'm not getting any younger. However among many other projects on the go (I'm far from methodical) is a video devoted exclusively to the history of the illustrated pinup, and when/if i make it Hilda is sure to feature.

    I am married to an professional illustrator who, likes me, admires these wonderful artists from the golden age of book illustration. Ad we are both appalled at some of the current work that sees publication, especially in illustrated children books. Granted, there are a few gems, but there is so much garbage! Why it gets published is a testament to the ignorance and lack of artistic judgement of too many publishers. And why some of these awful books receive awards is a testament to the lack of artistic education of the peer committees that grant them.
    We live in Canada, near Montréal, and the sad state of illustration here is, well, staggeringly disconcerting.
