    Another difference I've been noticing is that on a lot of black metal there aren't really any guitar solos whereas on death metal there usually are more solos then there are not.

    Awesome video! The fascinating thing about these subgenres is that they both originated from pushing extremity, but just developed in different ways.
    A lot of the mid-80s early Extreme Metal is just bands trying to break boundaries and be more extreme, they didn't have a "style" in mind.
    Look at Vulcano's Bloody Vengeance from 1986 - people call it Black/Death/Thrash - seems confusing but it makes perfect sense because subgenres are only labels for things that have evolved to the point of distinct separation, and these styles hadn't fully evolved yet.
    Later on - Blackened Death Metal became a think in the 90s, and that felt like the evil twins who were separated at birth coming together again, except this time combining their more evolved, second generation forms together as opposed to their first generation beginnings.
    So an album in the mid-80s that gets labelled Black/Death is that way purely by accident due to their similar origins, but Black/Death in the 90s was a consequence of bands deliberately combining influences after each side became more distinct and separate.

      Interesting. I was always under the impression that black metal has a lot in common with harcore punk, especially first wave bands like Hellhammer, Bathory and Sodom and some very early Mayhem material. Hardcore punk, especially the underground European scene in the early 80s sounded surprisingly similar to some early black metal.
      In terms of attitude there's definitely some similarities there.
      I personally believe that hardcore punk is often downplayed when discussing the evolution of extreme metal genres. While there was very little if any influence of punk on NWOBHM and associated or parallel scenes, there was definitely a strong influence on thrash, death and black metal subgenres.

    • @paravan2000

      @@elimalinsky7069 There was A LOT of influence from punk in NWOBHM scene and vice versa. Venom, Tank, Warfare, Amebix, Iron Maiden, Demon, Satan, Discharge, Broken Bones, English Dogs...

    • @elimalinsky7069
      @elimalinsky7069 Год назад

      @@paravan2000 Well, at least in the case for Iron Maiden there are multiple interviews of Steve Harris claiming to despise punk music and denying that Maiden were influenced by punk. I think the original Eddie artwork on that first album got some people confused because that genuinly looked like flyer art for a punk gig. I agree about Tank though, that band had some strong punk vibes. Not sure about the other bands, but Venom was very much influenced by Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Motorhead, with the latter of the bunch being the most punkish of them all. Lemmy also used to claim he generally regarded Motorhead as more of a punk band than a metal band.

    • @paravan2000
      @paravan2000 Год назад

      @@elimalinsky7069 First two Maiden LPs had a strong street punk vibe. Although Steve Harris disliked punk, Paul Di Anno was a punk rocker. Such contradictions between members and opinions existed in many other bands on both sides at the time, because there were both the influences and rivalries between punk and heavy metal scenes. Motorhead was the first "crossover" band as both punks and metalheads attended their gigs and Lemmy was in touch with both scenes, he was teaching Sid Vicious to play bass etc. Venom were strongly influenced by Motorhead and Sex Pistols, lots of punks attended their shows too. Tank and Warfare were bands with ex The Damned members. Amebix were a squatter punks who were into heavy metal and played their own version of metal which would later influence so many bands on both sides. Demon was on punk label and shared the management with The Exploited and Discharge. Discharge basically invented hardcore but also thrash and were a key influence for most thrash metal bands (including Metallica, Kreator, Hellhammer, Sepultura etc), before regressing into a bad heavy metal band in late 80s. Broken Bones were a band with ex Discharge members who played it better than Discharge in their later distinctly metal phase. English Dogs started as punk rock band who soon evolved to speed/power metal. Diamond Head were also influenced by punk, Brian Tatler many times cited how his songwriting got important push when he attended first punk gigs, in a way - I was learning a classical guitar for years but had difficulties writing a song - seeing these guys blasting with so little skills inspired me to do it right etc. Judas Priest also took some influence from punk, their songwriting became more streamlined since British Steel... There were also lots of crossovers between both scenes outside of UK at the time - Mercyful Fate being one with punk ties - Denner and Shermann played in punk rock band Brats before joining Mercyful Fate... and so on.

    Black metal has a lot, a lot, a lot of blast beats, even more so than Death metal I think. So that's the only part I would disagree with. Death metal tends to have slower, heavier sections with more chugging that breaks up the monotony. Black metal tends to have a lot more blast beats with tremolo riffs to create a dark and bleak atmosphere.

      That wouldn’t be because black metal necessarily uses more blast beats, but rather in the fact that death metal has a lot more variation in the songs. It is a lot more common for a death metal song to go from tremolo picking to chuga chuga in the span of a minute as opposed to black metal

    • @RuthlessMetalYT

      @@RuthlessMetalYT Ah alright fair enough. Yeah I am a guitarist and I was just wondering what the difference was since you were talking about them separately. I guess palm muting doesn't necessarily mean that the riff is chugging. for example there's a lot of palm muting in thrash metal but it's not chuggy, whereas death metal usually has those riffs where it's just a bunch of powerchords played with palm muting. I would call those riffs chuggy. Kind of similar to how one of the riffs in Metallica's "for whom the bell tolls" is played now I think of it

    Most early black metal and even proto black metal bands transitioned in or out of death metal. Mayhem for example was a death metal band before their infamous first album. Venom and bathory were of course speed/thrash that transitioned. Selputura was sorta proto black on their first two albums but became a big death metal band. I think the main difference comes from origins of both. Black metal is older than death metal. Proto BM bands appeared BEFORE thrash, while proto DM bands came AFTER the thrash being established. So it pushed the evolution of both styles in different directions.
    In other words, first Angel Witch, Venom, Demon and Mercyful Fate releases were the prototypes where black metal started to evolve, and then applied to all kinds of theatrical metal bands with satanic/occult theme.
    Then you got debuts of Metallica, Voivod and Kreator as proto DM, as being more focused on violence, war, psychopathy and less about occult horror.
    There were proto black/death bands like early Possessed, Sepultura and Slayer - very extreme and aggressive thrash, but black metal lyrics. Deicide, Morbid Angel, Blasphemy, Beherit, Impaled Nazarene etc are 90s examples of that.

    A bit OT.. I have always had that one single-but-major problem with black metal bands, which was (most of the time) the production of their records. I can always recall the shock of first time hearing Immortal's 1999 record 'At the Heart of Winter' - what a blast and loads of auditory pleasures that one was - and it continued up until 'Northern Chaos Gods', which, IMHO, was a bit of a step back.. But my personal precedent and preference was already set, so though I'm fine with music of other BM giants like Emperor and Gorgoth, it's really that messy, crammed sound, that, most of the time, makes me prefer listening to death metal.

    The main difference between both genres is that Death Metal other than any other rock subgenre uses the chromatic scale for most of the time, whereas Black Metal riffs use the diatonic minor scale far more often. Of course something that was crucial for the second wave of Black Metal was the connection of minor chords which are not in the same diatonic scale e.g. c-minor and eb-minor and thus can only be explained by the chromatic scale. But still Black Metal riffs always find back to one diatonic scale. Still the chromatic scale is far more present in Death Metal. (the exeption is the so-called "melodic death metal", I personally wouldn't consider it death metal at all)

    Let’s not forget about band logos. In general bm logos are pretty illegible. Death metal logos usually are, and letters are made to look “brutal”.
    Rhythm wise, black metal often has kinda duggah-duggah-duggah polka rhythms. Old Darkthrone albums used those by default, and many bm bands followed Darkthrone in this style.
    Musically many bm bands have a very passive or barely audible bass. This is a big difference with death metal, where the bass is fairly important.

      Yeah this is actually a BIG diffrence sonically. Black metal is in the vast majority of cases built around melodic ideas, as opposed to death metal. It’s very common for songs to use not even a single sort of variation of rhythm in the same song, thing which is very uncommon in death metal. Both kind of started with just skank beats, d-beats, and blast beats, but while black metal kind of kept just using some variations of those, death metal went in much more interesting directions.

    And it is important to mention that you don't need to match all these points to be in one of the genres.
    Imagine:
    Growls, Downtuned guitarres, brutal riffs, some tremmelo, some shrieks, lether clothes, lyrics about satan darkness and anti christian themes.
    Still very Death Metal.
