    Let's talk about it.

    Great review Gus, I purchased a Classic 1 week before the swift was announced, a bit of a bummer as I would have liked a battery indicator LED. However I just got back from Tobermory having done 10 deep wreck dives with other AI divers around me and the unit worked flawlessly. I agree with your recommendations, if you are a Rec diver and have a Classic there is no need to upgrade.

    I've been running Suunto D5 and transmitter for 200 dives now and no problems. I recently bought a shearwater transmitter and an Oceanic computer and I've found that it loses comms quite often. I swim with my arms crossed around my waist, so I'm thinking the signal strength isn't that great with the shearwater. I got the shearwater transmitter as I wanted to opt for a Teric in the future and that would be the same brand. But now I might just get an Oceanic transmitter and see if it fares better.

  • @timgosling6189
    @timgosling6189 2 года назад +1

    I really like the Shearwater display of all the transmitters on one page. My Suuntos, use a different method to pair the RF signals so you can pair up to 20 transmitters, should you feel the need, but you have to select each one independently on the Gasses page to see its output. I personally just pair the left hand cylinder with the computer on my left wrist and the right with the right, so it's still easy. I haven't used the Garmin with its acoustic link which apparently has a much longer range for its up to 5 transmitters but I'd be interested to know if anyone finds that range useful.

My scenario is this, I have a Perdix AI on the way, and since earlier an AquaLung i770r that I will keep as backup on the other arm. Only one tank involved. Would both computers be able to listen to the one single transmitter? Or would you need/want to have two anyway? Thx!

  • @straight-hooked

    I use 2 swift with the nerd2 on my rEvo. But I have also 2 uwatec/scubapro transmitters from my open circuit stuff (double 12 and 80 cuft). Do you have experience with these transmitters on shearwater computers? If so, which part of serial number (13 digits) do you use for pairing? Not sure about the serial numer of your aqualung transmitter.

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  2 года назад

      The Aqualung transmitter comes with the same amount of numbers on the serial as the Shearwater ones...I don't have any experience with Scubapro transmitters, but as long as they are on the same "frequency" the Shearwater should be able to read it. I would try the last digits and see if that works.

    • @octon76
      @octon76 2 года назад +1

      Thx for your answer. First or last 6 digits do not work. I did some research. Uwatec/scubapro can by connected only in there own family. Pairing can only initialized by pressure up the transmitter.
      So I will order aqualung transmitter for my bailout tank. Thx for testing this combinations. Greetings from Germany

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 2 года назад +1

      That's a common point of discussion in tech diving groups. In recent years I've seen the average opinion shift to transmitters being just fine. I did my full cave course with transmitters and my (very experienced) cave instructor was fine with that. The type that Shearwater uses have proven to be very reliable. Just replace batteries every year or so. If a transmitter fails you should should call the dive and should still have an idea what your remaining gas supply is (or your computer will show the last value) so you should be able to surface safely, just like when an SPG fails. I've had an SPG o-ring leak and cause gas loss. Same thing can happen with a transmitter.

  • @daASSasin901

    Do you have backup analog SPGs for all AI-monitored tanks or no? What're your thoughts on the necessity of redundancy in this regard? Thanks

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  2 года назад +3

      This is a very controversial topic. I’ve had SPGs fail on me but never a transmitter, so I personally don’t have backup SPGs on all my first stages. I have button SPGs because they are really useful to quickly check if the tank is full without having to turn on the computer, but once I’m diving I rely 100% on Air Integration.
      I will say that I don’t preach this as “the best way” or “the only way” to do it, there are some people that don’t trust air integration and only carry SPGs, some people carry both, I don’t tell anyone what to do I just like talking about what I do personally and why I do it that way, I also understand that a lot of people will disagree on the way I do it but they don’t have to dive with my gear.

      From a pure reliability standpoint a transmitter without an analog gauge "should" be more reliable because you likely eliminate one of the more common points of failure which is the hose. (Transmitters *can* be mounted on an hp hose rather than directly to the first stage to give them better line of sight to your receiver.)
      e.g. So even if the transmitter stops working, it's not going to be blowing hp gas out. Probably.
      Not a fan of button gauges, but a qd tank checker is a lot handier than wrestling a reg from tank to tank.
      An exception might be stages or safety bottles that are going to spend a lot of time in the water unattended. It probably makes more sense to have a normal analog gauge on these.
