The mechanical changes sound great but the actual removal of the lables (which correspond to the different body types because male and female have different physiologies) is ultimately done to appeal to gender ideology.
There are other games that list gender as "body type A or B" that did it way before gender identity became an extremely big thing. Stop complaining lol
@@Stargazing_night_sky It's bad when other games do it too. This 'Body Type A/B' switch is not more inclusive-it's confusing and actually more alienating. It feels like a change made to cater to a very small, very vocal group of activists, but at the cost of frustrating 99% of the fanbase. The truth is, people aren't asking for this. It's not making the game better, more inclusive, or more welcoming. If anything, it's a shallow attempt at progressiveness that ignores the real desires of both the core gaming community and the trans community. It doesn't respect the characters, the fans, or even the diversity they claim to represent.
@Katie-hb8iq listen, you can look into this way too much if you want to, but ultimately, it doesn't matter. This is such a small thing that it literally doesn't matter. Just pick the one you want when the game comes out and play the game. Edit: Also, like I said, companies have been doing "body type A/B" way before gender identity was a more talked about topic, so it's not a big deal.
Not likely that Personality is still likely to be B type/Female only its just that HOW would those actually unlock in most of the previous versions I needed a very Specific Wisdom and Intelligence stats to even use the Sexy Gal/Vamp Personality BUT in this remake the 2 stats for Magic Attack and Magic defense respectively don't even exist. As shown on the import videos other then max HP and MP PER lv up the only other stats that exist are are the Other 5 stats from the previous games that aren't your magic attack (Wisdom)/Defense INT stats so spells for the white/black mages may not only use FIXED lv but lower then normal since the Demo has the White mages at lv 10 WITH the Woosh spell that NORMALLY is only usable at lv 12 though most of the time I had that White Mage wind spell usable around lv 13 or 14 instead not lv 12.
Fire emblem has Female only classes too and they even give reason to it.... Pegasus rides are Female because the mounts bound better with females. There are Male only classes too...
I do not think that the problem comes only from here, square enix does censor almost all its games with ''sexy'' girls characters like Tifa in Ff7 or GIRLS characters in DQ and many others in other games, and also certain religious affiliation or something that could offend a community like the pink troll lips which were deleted too, And I think that the fans like me and probably you also guys, want to stop it, before it goes too far, WE have to save our favorite games stop asap this offense that square enix makes by censor them
To clarify the situation for some people they changed a menu, they aren’t removing gender or gendered language from the game. Over on gematsu there is a preview article titled “Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake details story, protagonist, world, spells, and abilities”. Among the screenshots on the article you can see an NPC referring to the male protagonist as “Ortega’s son”. Which means this whole thing is a complete non-issue that people have blown out of proportion in the name of the usual internet outrage. I have no clue why they changed the menu for selecting the sprite but given you still have the choice of both sprites and gendered language still exists in the game regarding the main character nothing was lowst. A menu is different and that is it. Just choose the sprite you want and the game still calls the player son/daughter etc regardless.
You can allow either gender to wear all armor and use any personality without renaming them Type A or B. Just allow a male access to sexy, boom done, easy.. no need to rename them. Gameplay perspective still improved without bowing to weird social agenda.
That's true, but quit looking so much into it. You're complaining about something that doesn't even matter. Just call the options male and female if you want. This isnt "bowing to a weird social agenda"
@zantharian57 no it isn't. Quit trying to cause problems Edit: there is a comment in this video made by a channel called celiriarose, it isn't hard to find. Go find that comment and read it. It explains what's actually happening and not your false info that you're adamant about sticking with lol
Restrictions are a good thing. Class based armor restrictions is one of the best aspects in the rpg genre. If they remake FF9 and lets Vivi wear all of Steiner's heavy armor, you would not say it's a good thing. Gender-locked equipment, although not as important, serves a similar role and have been a staple in RPG's for as long as female party members have existed. Removing restrictions actually removes diversity, as now you'll be encouraged to build male characters the same as female ones. Before, if you picked a male, you were forced to work with all the restrictions. I get your point about the genders being poorly balanced, but they should have rebalanced them instead and made the non-sexy personalities viable, the other female ones as well.
I've been a big fan of the Etrian Odyssey series, and played all of them and you could create your own characters with a female/male or even an animal appearance but it was never strictly defined as x gender or whatever. There were some class specific quests but nothing about gender. You can still canon them as whatever gender you'd like. People can care about this or not. I just don't personally. I don't care it doesn't impact my enjoyment of the game.
I don’t understand why they couldn’t just keep the labels at the start screen instead of this weird type A/ Type B nonsense? Literally they could’ve just had it so that male characters can get all the boons from female stats and armor or just make an equivalent version of those stats and armor for men to achieve the same result without all of this gender removal nonsense.
Very well said, David. This does sound like it was a gameplay adjustment decision, based on the sound reasoning you provided. I feel the choice between male and female should be just an aesthetic one and shouldn’t impact the game, especially if it can be taken advantage of so much as you mentioned.
The way you explained it makes a ton of tense, but I still don't see why they had to make that text change. I don't see what difference it makes if you still have Male and Female instead of Type A and Type B but with the gameplay changes still being there so either gender can use whatever.
Even after hearing your explanation, I guess I don't understand why they couldn't have just made it so the best personality types weren't locked behind a gender & that's it? Type A/B for appearance is fine, I don't actually care about this drama, but it seems like they went the 1 route that would ensure the internet would freak out 😅
unless they got rid of the locked gear to type 1 or 2 it makes no difference if they call it male or female or type 1 or type 2, doesn't change the meaning it just angers one group over another depending on what terminology you use
I’m fine with the changes but I’m still going to call the hero either a male or a female at the end of the day despite one person on twitter calling me a bigot for no reason. I’m still excited to play Dragon Quest III

People are so obsessed with labels . I definitely have no issue with this. I can’t trust this being done for anything other than ideological reasons. They removes the restrictions on gender specific features, removing gender was unnecessary. This is controversial and it is done to appeal to minority of your audience is not what I’d call making sense. Also I very much disagree with more options = better. A system like DQ11 where each character has their own unique skill tree is always better than a class system where everyone can have the same abilities. I highly value uniqueness and individuality. Everyone being the same bores me. Still going to get this however.
A welcome surprise, glad you talked about this. Elden Ring did the same thing and there was outrage, yet ER became GOTY for that year and FromSoft's fastest selling game.
Solid points! Yeah I played DQ3 since snes emulation and like you hit on on, female characters (due to equipment) where mechanically superior. That didn't personally affect my decisions in game so much, but I can see it affecting optimizers. These days there is such a divide on people's perception of DEI and LGBTQIA2S+ that anything that even mentions topics like gender get put in either 2 camps- conservative or liberal. I like your point of view and hope others can just, honest, enjoy DQ3 for the masterpiece it is without reading too much into it.
It's a trivial change, for sure and it's silly to let this rob you of a great game. I also want the industry to go back to more polished gorgeous 2D sprites, so I'm not going to cancel my preorder over this. Thanks for elaborating on this David! I hope 2DHD pleases shareholders.
So... There are usually a lot of *certain* channels that cover this sort of topic. And 9/10 they usually don't care about the game itself, they only really care because of the controversy. A similar thing happened to Pocky and Rocky Reshrined where it was going to be a little bit censored, these certain channels covered it and were disappointed. Not to be that guy but for pocky and rocky, that's a run and gun, A sub genre to the shmup/bullet hell. A genre that is very difficult which usually doesn't jive well with most audiences. So I have no doubt in my mind these people never cared in the first place and only needed something to upload that day, despite Pocky and rocky reshrined being a great game aside from that annoying thing. Now this, I feel very similar. If you are a dragon quest fan, this small change shouldn't deprive us from Such a long wait from a game we've been waiting for years for. I'll say these people complaining (for the most part) don't even care about dragon quest that much in the first place that this was such a deal breaker. I'm tired of hearing "Oh I was going to buy this game, it looked so good but now I'm not" Ok buddy, at the end of the day I want good games.
This is a great explanation of the version differences and gameplay reasons for why the equipment changes are made. The drama from certain sources made a lot more outrage than it deserved, and having someone who played the original explain it is great.
Really appreciate this type of coverage! People just want to read a headline, grab onto a buzzword and then use it to shout or virtue signal online without actually doing their homework to read the full story of what’s actually happening
Ok from a strict game play perspective, you still don't need to rename male and female to type a and type b. You can just have male and female strictly visual like how it is in a lot of other games, like Pokemon. With that said, if SE is doing this for inclusion purposes, they should say it if they didn't already. I personally just want companies not to be afraid of saying that they are being inclusive with choices like this. What I would have done is a kind of middle ground and put "choose your appearance" with no gender or types. Overall this is the best route, just let everyone choose what ever equipment and personality they want for their characters or better yet give more choice and have players decide what system they want, old school or modern.
You may be right, but it will be a VERY hard sell considering sweet baby Inc is involved. I also may be wrong here, but I believe DQ X only had a fan English translation and as far as I could find it uses "sex", and "male" and "female" terms. Whether you agree or disagree with the usage "type A" and "type B" are majorly seem as terms used by "woke" people.
I understand the explanation, but what they really could have done is just keep the Male and Female options, and then make all personality types and armor available to both. Which seems to be what's happening anyway, so why make this change? It seems poltiically charged even if there's a gameplay explanation.
So, why not just make it so that male/female have access to it but without changing the terminology? I'm fine with it, I'm just curious as to why the terminology itself changed rather than just balancing it so everything is unisex/unigender. Thank you for explaining though. I appreciate your videos, and your explanation on this.
I don't mind it but thinking about it now, the same effect can be done by changing type A and B to type M and F but no biggie. What's more offensive to me is the changing of the troll's lips red color to green. The message is that they equate the original to a black face. They allude to the troll as a black guy. No normal human being thinks like this. That's just racist.

When I first heard of this situation, I didn't have the full context so I thought people were upset because they were removing gender options and just doing a "they/them" thing. I even saw people say that they canceled their pre orders, and originally I thought "yeah, it sucks that they did that, though I'm still gonna buy it" But now that I know the full story I'm currently sitting Here like "...that's it? That was all they changed?"
So you can pick a male or female appearance, but equipment and personality are not gender-locked? That’s great! It’s worth noting that some personalities specialize more in a stat than vamp/sexy does, but it was so often the optimum that it makes me hope personalities are reworked somehow.
Why not just remove the locks on personalities and gear restrictions. Would've saved them the PR issues. Nobody would have noticed anything. It gives you the same benefits you described without the furor. Overall the whole issue to me is a nothing burger but anything that hurts sales when they were looking to rebound is probably not great overall.
I guess it isn’t too big of a deal. I just hope it isn’t a political statement. I hate it when games go that route. I just don’t want to be preached to. I’ll make up my own mind on how I feel about politics. Thanks for clearing that up, David. You’re the best. ❤❤❤
I hope you know/come to learn that people's genders existing are not political statements. Acknowledging gay, bi, trans and nonbinary people in a piece of media is not a political statement. We EXIST.
I've got good news, then: nothing allows you to make up your own mind more than Type A/B! Anyone is free to think whatever they want about their Type A or B characters. You are being "preached" to less than if the developers were telling you what to think with "Male" and "Female", so you should be happy! Maximum freedom of thought!

I get what you are saying and makes a lot of sense but i dont like it ,the fun of having genders is the unickness of such if everyone can equip whatever whats the point lets just removed class as well and have a party of all alike characters that can equip all items of the game. I get you but i assure you the least motive about why square is doing this is the reason that you mention. In case my point isnt clear restrictions make party biluilding more fun and interesting.
My current feelings on this aren't solid yet and I'm still working through it. Type A/B seems weird to me. It feels kind of more like erasure then anything that makes actual sense or atleast hiding behind neutral language. Just open up the Sexy personality to both Male and Female choices. Men can be/are sexy. I don't see an issue there. I know this isn't exactly new for RPG's and DQ series but it feels off to me. Not enough for me to forego playing just something that annoys me. Separately I don't know this for a fact yet and haven't looked into but I keep hearing that puff puff is removed from the game? That would turn me off from the game a lot more.
Mr. David, you say that by changing 'male' and 'female' to 'Type A' and 'Type B' removes the gender-lock on personality and gear, but do you have evidence to back up that claim? Not saying it isn't true, because it would be great if they do remove it the gender-lock on all the female-exclusive stuff, but I need to see proof from Yuji Horii himself first, is all.

Paper Mario Sticker Star & Color Splash does that as well on bosses. The fact you have to find this one particular sticker or card that will effect the bosses to make the battles more easier wasn't an smart move.
In the gbc version, I made all the teammates ladies because they could then use the best personality trait “sexy”. The guys would have to use “lewd” which had lower stats and is totally uncool as a descriptor so that was not going to happen for my hero.

Can I get proof that you just picked body type in Dragon Quest 10? I want to also show this point, I found an English Playthrough but it says "male and female"
All I care about is a great story line with plot twists, and that have strong characters with eccentric personalities regardless of gender or lack thereof.
I dont think the equipment by gender its the true reason for this change. Every dragon quest had this equipment differences (even Dragon Ques IX). I really dont mind the change in the gender screen. In the end its just an illution. The protagonist are voiced by a man and a woman so only the words are missing in the gender selection screen.
They didn't need to censor the words Male and Female to have made the gameplay changes you mentioned. This argument is ridiculous. Edit: And now that I know you're deleting comments I suspect it's actually disingenuous too.
You whining about it like a petulant child is the only ridiculous thing. Did you cry this much when they changed the Red Slime's name to She Slime? And he clearly didn't delete anything since I can still (unfortunately) read your comment.
That kind of makes the characters more generic to me. Part of the challenge is making the player figure out how to work within the limitations of their choices. Even in assigning gender in character creation.
Never played the original, but I'll definitely be checking this remake out! Thanks for doing a really thoughtful explanation here. And I laughed so hard when you had your game going in the background with it saying "David you have a dirty mind" "You just can't stop thinking about boys" 😂😂

Isn't Erdrick/Loto/Roto assumed to have been male, essentially.. his actual gender being lost to the annals of time, since female is also an option? The gender wasn't as important as the legend itself. I could be misremembering, as it's been so long. Anyways, this is a non-issue for me, because my original party was a 3 male/1 female split, because I didn't know about gender exclusive armor and such when I started; so like you said, this is going to benefit so many first timers or people who don't want to be locked into an all female party. This isn't the first time I've seen type A/B kind of stuff in games, anyways. I don't think it's that big a deal, but I know you won't want to visit the Dragon Quest III Steam forums once this game launches. I'm sure they will fan-patch gender back in just like they made that awful AI re-translated Eiyuden Chronicles patch. They'd rather broken English than a good script with emotion! Apparently if there are no gender specifiers, they wouldn't know what to pick!
@@MasterKnightDH True. I was basically saying that the heroes legacy was passed on but the male gender is assumed even though female was an option canonically, so in a way, gender is not important here. Reminded me of a Joan of Arc kind of situation except the people didn't carry over that she was possibly female for whatever reason. Just my thought process.
They didn’t eliminate it though. They changed a menu for one reason or another but gendered language is still in the game. Not really sone grand case of censorship if they didn’t even remove the thing from the game theyare supposedly censoribg. Over on gematsu there is a screenshot of the english version where you can see an NPC refer to the male player as Ortega’s son. They changed a menu and made character build options usable by anyone and that’s it.
Eh, this might make sense in *THIS* game, but... there are games that do not have gender-specific equipment and gender-specific game mechanics doing the whole "Body Type1" and "Body Type 2" thing.. such as World of Warcraft and some other games. So it isn't JUST about unlocking gender-locked equipment and mechanics, though in THIS game, yes it does make sense. Other games.... not so much.
But is there an conformation that Type A and Type B can pick from all the personality's that before where locked to male or female? Or would i have to pick type B if lets say i wanted the sexy personality?
I'm ok with them getting rid of "gender" selection as long as the character creator still allows you to make "sexy" looking women and "buff" looking men. So as long as the character models themselves don't change, I'm good. Allowing a buff dude in a bikini or dress is fine. Same goes for a woman in big bulky plate armor. What I'll be angry about is if they force all characters to essentially be Androgynous like they did in PoGo for example. No facial customization at all as all faces are the same is one such change. Sure every model can wear every clothing option, but players lost the option of having "women" look like sexy curvy women and men lost the ability to be muscular men. So I guess I'm just asking, even without a "gender" option, to still allow players to design the character how they want.
I really just don't understand why people would freak out about this. Call it whatever you want, and really it doesn't matter as long as the game itself is good. All this woke outcry is just nonsense and really dumb.
Yeeeeah, makes senses. Doesn't seem like a huge biggy. Just equalizing gameplay. Also...I honestly got really distracted from the Waterall just calling you out XD
It would be beneficial to include a question at the beginning of a new game to determine preferences regarding male or female characters and body type 1 or 2. This could help prevent later frustration or confusion.

Right so... As far as I can tell this will have no effect whatsoever in how I play... I *Always* go for an all-girl party in Every Game that allows me to do it, and I didn't even know the Sexy personality was even there, cuz I don't look anything up, and well, now that I know, I'm still not going for it lol What I'm not-so-lowkey hoping for is that they let me choose to play as the "Princess of Midenhall" in DQ2HD, because well, the gender of the DQ2 hero has absolutely no impact whatsoever in the story, so why not just let me choose in the remake? @Katie-hb8iq listen, you can look into this way too much if you want to, but ultimately, it doesn't matter. This is such a small thing that it literally doesn't matter. Just pick the one you want when the game comes out and play the game.

I loved seeing David's strategy guide page falling apart. Shows how much he's referenced it and played the game 😅 DQ3 truly is a special game.
The main thing that bothers me the most is CENSORING of Toriyama sensei's work. That's the real tragedy. Especially with the legends passing...
This seems to rhythm with the localization "issues" with Unicorn Overlord.
Correct, these are usually the biggest non issues lol.
Eh. This is already a thing in souls games and japanese titles that have a character creator. @@jonathancook1731

You can allow either gender to wear all armor and use any personality without renaming them Type A or B. Just allow a male access to sexy, boom done, easy.. no need to rename them. Gameplay perspective still improved without bowing to weird social agenda.

The real question is will I be able to finish Metaphor: ReFantazio before DQ3 remake comes out.

THANK YOU DAVID. Sensible perspective on what the discourse also goes weird and crazy over, and *actually* game focused 😂
Dude, I didn't like this name change. I prefer that male or female could use any equip.
I don't mind it but thinking about it now, the same effect can be done by changing type A and B to type M and F but no biggie. They changed a menu and made character build options usable by anyone and that’s it.
gendered laungaue is silly to start with, people will still call your character he or she so it really dosent matter
@@CeliriaRose now being labeled as type A and Type B does remove gender. It's a DEI trans change.
@@vanessabarnes2869 i want type B entities to have big Godzilla size jugs
"gendered language" it's a fantasy game where you fight slimes lmao
Eh, this might make sense in *THIS* game, but... there are games that do not have gender-specific equipment and gender-specific game mechanics doing the whole "Body Type1" and "Body Type 2" thing.. such as World of Warcraft and some other games. So it isn't JUST about unlocking gender-locked equipment and mechanics, though in THIS game, yes it does make sense. Other games.... not so much.
So with this remake you could say....... They're bringing sexy back!
Ill see myself out.
But is there an conformation that Type A and Type B can pick from all the personality's that before where locked to male or female? Or would i have to pick type B if lets say i wanted the sexy personality?
Now i get why its so controversy, i thought it was just about choice at start
There's a legit gameplay reason for the option A and option B so the conversation after that is just drama.
Just imagine back then proffesor oak ask you : so are you body type 1 or body type 2😅
Who cares? lol. really. you still see them as male and female, it's not hurting you
@JeanKP14 By this same logic, it shouldn't matter what they're called. People are allowed to not like the change, and people are allowed to not care.
male bikini CPR anyone? 😂😂😂
@JeanKP14 then why change it in the first place? If it's a non-issue, leave it as it was.
What would improve the choices is letting me choose between boy and girl and wear whatever you want now that's choices
I appreciate the clarification. The headlines were making me nervous of more censorship. Good luck on hitting 100k.
Your channel is great and it’s awesome to see someone else who loves RPGs like I do. Appreciate this video clearing things up, when I first saw the title I was scared lol
Right so... As far as I can tell this will have no effect whatsoever in how I play... I *Always* go for an all-girl party in Every Game that allows me to do it, and I didn't even know the Sexy personality was even there, cuz I don't look anything up, and well, now that I know, I'm still not going for it lol
What I'm not-so-lowkey hoping for is that they let me choose to play as the "Princess of Midenhall" in DQ2HD, because well, the gender of the DQ2 hero has absolutely no impact whatsoever in the story, so why not just let me choose in the remake? (Also, pls, let the rest of the towns in Alefgard be there in DQ2)
Honestly, i picked three males (hero included) and one female in both the nes and the mobile version on the switch, but the explanation was good all the same. Looking forward to playing the hd2d remake!
Thanks for the great video!
Dragon Quest 2, 3, 4 and 10 are the only mainline games in the franchise that I haven't played, so I had no idea about the personality system! 😆
Hopefully the system in the remake will have some UI to help players work towards the personalities we want without needing to wait for guides to go up 🙂
Dude i i know this is off topic but man you know how to choose the right soundtracks to play for your videos
Wouldn’t it have been more “RPG” to just balance out the equipment so there’s pros and cons to both sides?
