Look I get it that as an old skool Birk she's feeling a sense of abandonment that perhaps Birkenstock the company who created the shoe that alas, addressed the need for people who suffered from a somewhat platypus -like foot syndrome that rendered them almost paraplegic might not have also as a result of their unique design & research developments expanded technologies to address those of its potential market base who do not suffer this malady. But in fact have normal feet and would appreciate shoes that didn't require an orthopedic affect to become comfortable to wear, You know, like "Damn, I think I'd like to wear some thing a little bit more comfortable today".
I agree however with all those who posted here that perhaps she would indeed be a great spokesperson for Birkenstock. But frankly she begin to 'rake on my nerves" after a few minutes.

Thanks for this. I recently bought my first pair (Arizona) and was going to exchange them for soft footbed because I thought the regular was too hard but after watching your video I changed my mind. I THEN realized I got the narrow fit so I exchanged them for regular. I love how my foot feels like it has all the space it needs. They do look pretty wide but I don’t care. I’m excited to see what they’ll do for my feet 🦶

Thank you for your concise and articulate review, I am a former ballet dancer(professional) so you can imagine the myriad foot issues that I have, that and four surgeries. This has been so helpful as I could not figure out what was going on with the sizing as the salesman at Nordstrom lacked the knowledge and training, which is not his fault as it is the vendor's fault. So now I am equipped with new knowledge and I can sally forth into the Bikenstock complaint department and give the 'what for'. Many many thanks, Ann

Thank you for the information regarding soft vs. regular footbeds. I've been seeing a lot more styles in only soft, and could not find a good explanation of the difference. I'm a long time Birks wearer with a host of "fun" foot ailments, and I'm pretty confident, from your review, that the soft beds would not be a good fit. So, I guess that's a long-winded thank you!!!

I have pretty high arches, and this year started having pain in my left arch…and now have 3 pairs of soft bed Birks. Being so impressed with the comfort, I finally got a pair with the original footbed, because like you, so many people say the original footbed is superior to the soft. I had a break in period with the soft bed, about a week or so, and I was expecting a lot more pain/discomfort with the original, but it’s not that bad, I don’t even feel like I have to take them off after a few hours, like they recommend while breaking in. The insole definitely feels much harder, but not in a bad way. I work in the medical field, and am seriously considering the professional Boston, or maybe the Birki “rubber” clogs.

Thank you for this video. Specifically the information on the soft footbed. I have always bought the original hard footbed. I wanted the taupe suede Boston, but it was only available in the soft footbed. I have never had such a problem with a pair of birks before. The issues you described with the soft footbed is exactly what I have been experiencing. I thought I was loosing it, until this video. I will be sticking with the original footbed from now on. Thank you.

Just experienced my first pair of the Soft footbed. This video is very accurate when it comes to explaining the soft footbed. For me, it was exactly as described. It didn't provide the same level of foot molding, didn't provide the same level of arch support and felt generally more snug than the regular footbed. When I tried to go up a size that didn't work. I exchanged them for a normal pair. While they aren't the same color, I'd prefer a shoe that fits well to one with a nice color. Just sad I can't have both!

This is a great review, so informative. I grew up in Germany and have always worn Birkenstocks and my parents swear by them. But, we bought them in Germany and of course they are all worn down and old now. I recently bought a couple and the Gizeh style was one of them. I really like them, didn't have a problem and I have a high arch but no issues with my arches though. I didn't realize they had the soft footbed but I am used to the regular footbed anyway. We plan on visiting Germany within the next year. I think I better stock up while I'm there. Thank you for all your knowledge.

Thank you for your video. I have worn Birkenstock for over 50 years and since I can no longer find a place to have the soles replaced (the leather uppers still look like new) I am in the market for a new pair. I have a high arch and need the narrow size but couldn't decide between the two footbeds. After watching your video I will stay with the regular footbed and select an "other than the style I want" to stay with that footbed.

Amen!! I know why Birkenstock offers the soft footbed but they need to advertise the advantages of the original sole. They also need to train sales associates of the "real" advantage of the original sole. I have had surgery on my 50 year old feet and the broke in Birkenstock is a "God Send". By the way, this was a very truthful, very beneficial review for people who don't know about the hard footbed vs soft. Why did I watch this video? Because the sandals I want are only offered with he soft sole. I'm going to have to order the special shoe. This is a very good example of how people will buy something because they don't take the time to understand the product they are purchasing. Shoes are the most important thing a person can purchase for long term foot health.

Thank you for helping me understand these shoes. I started using their insoles after spending about $1k on other foot stuff. And the burkenstock saved my life (feet) They hurt for about the first week pushing everything back in place, but now I can't live without them. I just got my first pair oxford burkenstock shoes, and only worn them for a day, the feel good, but I'm was getting the feeling like I want to put the insoles in to get more support. We will see...only time will tell.
The one thing that would save my feet and allow me to buy crapy shoes again? drop about 50 lbs I don't need. if only.
Thanks again for your nice video,

very informative video dealing with Birkenstocks. I have been a very long time advocate of Birkenstock and believe the only good footbed is the Original( classic). I currently have 9 pair. My grip with them is that I must wear ESD shoes to work and they must have a closed toe and heel and a strap on the heel. I had a classic footbed clog with strap on the back that worked for a long time, but the metal studs inserted into the heel and forefoot began to cause severe bruising and pain, not to mention , you can not get them resoled with an ESD sole at any repair place I have found. I recently bought 2 new pair of ESD tokyo birkenstocks ( as they claimed online to be the original ( classic ) footbed. Well, when they finally arrived, they were not the classic footbed, they have a grey colored suede type footbedliner and the arch is not as high and the heel is not as deep. I have been wearing them to work out of necessity, but by the end of the day my feet have been killing me. I can literally stand in them and feel the difference in lack of support, which I find very disheartening. I suffer from severe plantar fasciitis and have come to rely on the Birkenstocks as my only workable foot wear option. But everyone needs to be very well read and informed when purchasing Birkenstocks as they are not always very forthcoming with their shoe descriptions which can result in mountains of frustration, especially from long time customers. The current Birkenstock ESD tokyo shoes I have ,wear much like some I had gotten from ALLPro, which is or was an offshoot from Birkenstock some years ago and their footbed did not match the footbeds of the original line of Birkenstock. Anything that has the Classic Arizona sandal footbed in it, is all I want. I have sent them numerous emails and all you get is" thanks for being a loyal customer" then nothing but crickets. If I could just get them to sell me a sheet of the ESD shoe sole material..I would be set.

Hi from Portugal. I'm a chef and my wife too. Can you provide their email?
'm ordering my first pair ever, I'm 45 and I'm a chef and I tried dozens of different shoes.. What is important is the anti slip sole and the comfort. My wife suffers from severe elbow spur pain and she wants to try birkenstock too.... She is a chef too. Which model should we order? On professional line anti slip we liked:
      Kay sl for her
      and I'm deciding between:
Kay sl, Tokyo grip and qs400 for me as I never used open back clogs on work and I just saw qs400 are closed shoes. However I'm afraid of the steel toe cap which I don't use for the last 7 years as it broke my toe nails on other shoes... We liked Kay sl because they are not red nor blue like the Kay soft footbed but we confess we were excited about the "soft footbed"... Now that we heard so many complaints about the soft footbed we are even more confused. I'm 45 she is 40 and we never tried any birkenstock. Can you please help us choosing? Thank you very much!

I love the original hard footbed. I sent a letter to Birkenstock USA and Germany asking them to keep making the original footbed. I just purchased a pair 2 weeks ago. Thanks for making this video. It is accurate. But the sales people will say there is no difference between soft and hard. I for one know that the hard is better for people like me who have high arches. My local Birkenstock retailer said they discontinued making the high arch Birkenstock! Eeerrg! I can't wear the SOFT footbed because there is not enough arch support a few milimeters makes a difference for high arches.

***** My question is---I am a very long time birkenstock wearer and I just got a new pair of Florida Birkenstocks in a 37 "Regular" and they are NOT like the fit I have with other 37R's---these are marked as "R" but the straps, especially over the arch area are not even long enough to adjust in case your feet swell during the day---I put them in the very last hole and if you made another hole in the strap you would not be able to completely buckle the strap----also the footbed was cutting into the underside of my arch where the shoe arch is at the highest. I have also noted that in the past few years and original footbeds are not conforming to my foot as good as the pairs I have that are older. I am very disappointed that birkenstock seems to be changing their quality control with the skimping on length of straps and I really believe they are using cheaper materials on their footbeds.
I noted that you said we could contact birkenstock in Germany? Do you have an e-mail or something for that contact? I would like to contact them with my complaints and see if I can purchase some birki's from them, as the birkis are truly sized and cut for a wider foot, the birkenstocks are much narrower, even in the "regular" width.
      Thanks for any info!

Wow, you are so knowledgable and I learned a lot from this video. I was frustrated last week after buying a pair of Birkenstocks for the first time. My left foot was in pain, had a cramp and my nerve caused pain up my left leg. All I could think was, "I just wasted $100!!" I went back to flip flops for a few days and just wore the Birks again today ( for the second time) and everything was fine. I was interested in knowing why they hurt so much. Your description of having to break down the cork to match my foot explained things. BTW, I bought the Mayari in Mocha. I think it probably has the regular footbed and not soft but I'm not certain.

From today's perspective I totally agree with you. But back in the days when the soft footbed was released things looked a bit different. The soft footbed was invented in 1999 as in german called “Weichbettung” and no marking or label on the footbed has indicated it so that usually a small white round sticker was attached at the heel of the footbed to distinguish it from the hard ones. But it was a huge difference to today´s version. The latex cushion underneath the suede liner was at least twice as thick, much much softer and almost reached the edges of the footbed, so the heel was completely padded all around. When I first stepped in it , it was a awesome feeling, no comparison to this crap today where is only this well known small thin stripe at the bottom of the footbed which isn´t really soft at all. When I went to the Birkenstock store in 2004 as every year to buy me a new model I realized that Birkenstock had drastically changed the soft bedding. I asked what this change was about, but none of the salesladies could give me a real answer. Fortunately, in this transitional period, there were still some models with the old soft version in stock. Knowing that the old soft version would soon be unavailable, I decided impulsively to make me a own stock and bought about 5 pairs with the old version. After that I called the Birkenstock headquarters to ask why the soft bed was changed so badly. At first, they denied the change, but on further inquiries they admitted they had changed the footbed. The reasons were as follows: In extreme daily use, the suede liner loses his elasticity over time. Due to the very thick latex padding underneath, the suede liner can not stretch enough anymore when stepping on and then tears. Because there were a lot of complaints, the padding now was made much thinner and firmer to prevent tearing the suede liner. They know that this was at the expense of the comfortable feeling. But Birkenstock is, of course, a company that has to work for profit so that I can understand the change in some way. Therefore, if I buy a new pair today, then I also prefer the normal hard version instead of the soft one. At the time of the old soft footbed, however, that would never have been an option for me.

I've worn Birks for almost 30 years now and I much prefer the soft footbed to the regular style. I do have a low arched foot, but my toes and heels appreciate the softness as much as my arches, and they don't take any longer for me to break in. They seem to wear out at the same rate as well, eventually cracking in the same spot on the suede insole where they flex.

Thank you very much for this video. You should definitely do more videos on the Birkenstock brand. I too am frustrated with the fact that there are more and more soft foot beds when the original foot bed ,once worn in ‘are so much more comfortable. Your explanations are very good and helpful to anyone new to Birkenstock.

I have the plastic birkenstock gizeh and I have a couple things to say.
    1. Yes they are unisex
    2. They are comfortable
    3. They have such a nice fit.

30 year loyal Birkenstock wearer/ plantar fasciatis sufferer. your comments are spot on. no arch support in the soft foot bed. can't grip/feel the toe grip. no room for toes/socks with the enclosed shoes. soft foot bed s*cks. no way to reach birkenstock USA and they don't listen anyway. i plan to take my business to the german sites.

You are very knowledgeable. I own several pairs of Birks. Unfortunately, Birkenstock was recently acquired by another company. I hope their quality and variety does not suffer. The Birks also tone your legs, but most don't realize this benefits. When the foot is properly aligned it helps the legs and the spine, and your muscles will be properly activated.

I got a pair of regular arizonas for christmas right. Late march my dog chewed up the whole toe part. I got a pair of soft footbed flordias and i love them so much more than the regular since i am 1) new to birks and 2) have a low arch. I love soft ones so much more than regular

This was extremely helpful. I bought my first birks 10 years ago in Germany on sale in a department store. They were pink Gizeh. I tried them on and immediately bought them. I think my next pair will be Arizona. I have a high (falling due to age) arch, so I will go with the original footbed.

About the regular and narrow size: Here in Germany, when I first began to wear Birkenstock, like 35 years ago as a teenager, you didn´t get a wide range in respect of colours or styles. BUT: The ones they offered were all available in both withs, regular and wide. As far as I remember anyway :) Like the Arizona you could get in black, white, blue and brown leather, and at some point they started with the Birkoflor (non-leather-material, which is good too). So make your choice in colour and then regular or narrow, that was all, and everyone happy

I have CRPS in both feet and legs, all of a sudden I couldn’t wear normal closed in shoes and flip flops... someone told me of birks. I have the normal footbed original Birkenstock, and it was the most comfortable. I wear them everyday. I recently tried the soft footbed, I simply can’t wear them due to the daily chronic pain.
Original footbed is best by far. Thank you for clarifying why I can’t wear the soft footbed.

I agree these shoes, all of them, have to be offered in both, soft footbed and regular footbed. Also I miss the Pisa style of Birkenstock, hope they bring them back as well. I am german and have been wearing Birkenstock a lot, since I was a teenager. And that was 35 years ago... :) Always have a pair of classic Arizona style, plus a Pisa (if I get them again!), a Rio or a Boston (Clog-like). Wear them for years and years until the cork begins to fall apart, then get two new pairs and wear them again for years andsoon.... Love Birkenstock :)

***** I think the pain of breaking them in would be worth the realignment of my feet to stop the pain in the long run. This really will help out so much at work. Again, thank you so much.

I am pushing 62, flat feet, and a torn planter plate. Was not going to buy those cloddy looking, over priced sandals that was on the podiatrist list of recommended shoes. Well, I am so glad I walked in a store and tried them on! Had them 2 weeks, and am ready to get another pair and googled what the difference in regular foot bed vs. soft bed. So glad I viewed your video, great job, I will try to only buy the regular. Question, I did get the oiled leather, but wonder if the synthetic is an ok option?

    • @saint_snow
      @saint_snow 6 лет назад +7

stick with the leather. the synthetic is just the upper part of the sandal (straps). Leather not only looks and feels better after breaking in but just generally better quality. Synthetic is just a cheaper alternative.

Hey. I really liked your video. I actually ordered a pair of Birkenstock Kairo and when I got them I immediately noticed that they we're a size too big even though I ordered them in my actual size. So I sent them back and reordered a pair smaller. I'm still waiting on my new pair but what I noticed was the extremely hard footbed. It really concerned me for a while. Then I researched why the footbed is so hard and I found your RUclips video which was tremendously helpful in understanding why. So thanks!!!

I totally agree. I am NOT a fan of the soft footbed. All shoes should be available in both regular and soft footbed. I am definitely a fan of the regular footbed. And they are more comfortable to my foot. I thought it was just me. THANK YOU!!!
