Because that's a Porsche model (or at least an "early" model with turrets produced by Krupp), I must put out there, only ~50 King Tigers were made with that specific turret, all other/later King Tigers were produced by Henschel (with turrets still produced by Krupp, but now as a "production" model) with more square-shaped turrets to reduce the risk of a shot-trap, which was found out early on, which is why there is a very low number of King Tigers with the rounded turret cheeks.
In short, the King Tiger in this video is quite rare.

And don't forget that they are using one of the old Centurion ARV Mark 2 (originally sold to the Swiss Army in the 1950's and rebadged as the Entpannungspanzer 56) recovery vehicles here to move the King Tiger because it is also a beast. Love the way these two leviathans lurch forward together. You have to use a tank to move a tank and well done the recovery vehicle crew, you did an excellent job guys! The ARV's 12 litre meteor engine (based on the RR merlin) has an incredible amount of torque, as proven here in moving a combined 120 tonnes!

Sounds like most tanks. I mean what tank considered "well armored" do not suck fuel like crazy and constantly broken? Multi fuel engines and turbine engines! Wonderful display of sucking hard and constantly something wrong with them. (after WW2 designs I'm talking about)
Tiger II and Tiger I engines/drive train where just to much for the manufacturing of the day. Not to mention war time production. Or fuel shortage. To even manage to have the Mause move around under own power is just insane for the time.
Most messed up tank I have seen is a Tiger I without the turret running on wood. Literately running on wood gas from burning wood. (training tanks for drivers) Yet still insisting on making Tiger II's and Panthers when your down to using wood to power a super heavy tank at wartime.

The early turret gets it's "porsche" nickname due to the turret being manufactured for the Porsche-designed prototype of the Kingtiger. Porsche ordered 50 turrets before it was decided which prototype (Porsche or Henschel) was going to be awarded the contract.
Porsche then lost to Henschel, but the turrets were already manufactured, so they put them on the Henschel-made Kingtigers. After complaints from the crews about the armour weakpoints, the improved turrets were issued.

The recovery vehicle is BIGGER than the KT, so the Centurion was at least as big as the KT? AND "Bytt är bytt kommer aldrig igen" losely translated to "Exchanged is exchanged, and will never be returned"!

Please tell me they weren't pulling the turret around with a machine at 1:20. Looks like a good way to bend/break something.

This is not the King Tiger from Henschel, it is the Tiger II with the Porsche turret.

Los comentarios están en inglés, pero tengo una pregunta, el tanque está sin camuflaje, ¿Es una réplica actual, o lo llevaron a mantenimiento y está sin pintura?

    • @memojackson1000
      @memojackson1000 2 года назад +1

Creo que no tenía camuflaje porque es el prototipo para el Tiger II y el museo de bovington lo pintó de ese color

If this is the Tiger I think it is, it belonged to Bovington previously. It’s a prototype made with soft steel found at the end of the war and brought to Dorset for evaluation. It never saw service and never had any side skirts or extra fittings to begin with

Can you imagine seeing that during the war? Sat in a Sherman against that beast? Thank God they came late to the war and had little impact. Once the Allies controlled the air it was only time

I don't know myself exactly what will happen to him, or only as an exhibit at the Swedish Tank Museum!. But I can tell you that the engine and gearbox are no longer there, I've seen some pictures that the entire interior is missing, and the engine was removed by him and installed in the Tiger 131 in Bovington

@@daviddruxius8496 The engine and transmission could, with a bit of work, be replaced with a modern diesel engine and transmission as has been done in other restorations.

@@terrysmith4831 The museum still has the engine and transmission! from the S2
1947 as a Sweden Tiger which was scrapped in the 90s! They want to build this into the Tiger 2, as he said at the end
