That's one hell of a collection there and a massive building.
It's one of the bighgest war museums in "The Netherlands" in the town of "Overloon".
Fantastic museum indeed.

A friend of mine drove 251s during the war. Our reenactment group obtained and reconfigured 3 OT-810's and before he passed, he helped train the drivers. One tip he gave them right away was, NEVER wrap your thumbs around the steering wheel to grasp it. If you strike something or drive into a rut, the wheels can jerk violently. If your thumbs are on the inside of the steering wheel the cross bars can break them if the wheel jerks. Use only your fingers to grasp the wheel and steer from the bottom.
Nice to hear the story. What you mention is indeed correct, so when driving off road need to take the steering wheel only at the outside of the steering wheel

It is amazing that any of these vehicles survived the scrapheap. I cringe to think of how many of these useful and historic vehicles were simply destroyed after the war or after having been surrendered.
Same goes with WW2 warplanes. Most were scrapped after the war. Saving a few for historical purposes wasn’t on everybody’s mind at the time.
@@irvan36mm Quite a number were flown straight from the factory to the storage areas and scrapped soon after. When the Dambusters film was made in the 1950's the three Lancaster's used for filming were flown straight to a British Aluminium site and scrapped😢

Did Sdkfz 250s have a spare tire? If they did where was it mounted? I know the Sdkfz 251 usually had one in the front ... I am asking because I model it at 1/56 scale. Thanks :)
Normally not, would need to check but the 251 for example has bulletproof tires, so no need for extra tires. An extra rim might handy when that might get a hit

Whats that small sub with the torpedo on its side with the German cross?
I was wondering too
At what moment in the video?
Vehicles need to be run and operated on a somewhat regular basis. otherwise the seals and belts dry up and have to be replaced. Not to mention the fuel pump, fuel filter and fluids can go bad from just sitting.

I was wondering why it looked so weird. Because of the 250s i saw from reference material. they all had angled side panels. But this is the ausf B. never knew they made a very different one.

What is the point with the 'upside-down' steering wheel?
Good machine
another example of the needlessly specific equipment manufactured by Germany during the war... but a valid concept regardless.... on one hand they had equipment like the 251, and on the other they still needed horses...
3:25 that was bloody close ... :o

I see the front wheels are doing the steering. Does the rear also assist by skid steering? Are the tracks connected via differential? 🤔😎
@Down Under Dan According to Interwebz, steering brakes are connected to the steering wheel. So when turning harder, the inner track will brake. It's like driving a tractor, but with less pedalling. It really should have had front wheel drive for terrain, since those wheels bump into, and don't climb over.
It would be my favourite winter car, tho. If only there was a heater.
Correctly explained how it turns 😉
Surprised how nice and smooth it drives, even without power steering. One thing I noticed is the steering wheel is in such a weird angle, like towards your legs. Great video
It should theoretically drive even more smoothly, has been checked over the past year, so should run perfect now. And you are correct, the steering wheel is indeed in an angle, just as with the Sd.kfz 251

Esse é bom para quem mora no Rio de Janeiro.
Only now i've realized how small this is. Holly crap.
Looking at the specs, this is smaller than a present day mini class car, like the VW Polo
Joli !
Is the steering wheel really that close to the instrument panel? You can't even use half the wheel the way its mounted. Knuckle buster.

It’s like everyone is running all in the way of an armored vehicle in a tight and dangerous environment. I’m surprised the museums insurance allows it.
It’s actually the owner (who lend the vehicule to the museum) of the vehicle and friends looking to see he doesn’t hit anything 😉 they all drive similar kind of vehicules so are aware it’s them to need to look out he doesn’t hit them, since his view is limited
@@WJHJ thanks for the info!
What's advantage of putting track at back and big wheels on front
It’s easier to steer, similar to driving a car. Also the first turning is done by the wheels, but when turning heavily it uses the tracks. The tracks also makes shure you are able to get through mud and up steap places. Why did they painted in sandcastle color?
Painting was done by previous owner. But at the end of the war they painted all vehicules in a beige/sand colour. Here not shure if that the reason or wanted it like for Afrika look
All German vehicles came from the factory painted that tan/mustard color from 1943 on. Vehicle was issued with tins of green and brown paste which could be thinned down with gasoline, paint thinner, etc, and applied to camouflage the vehicle to best suite the terrain it would be operating in.
I believe the color is called Overall German Sand. When I used to build models that is what the directions called for.
Nice. Though the position of the steering wheel would take some getting used to.
Indeed although still faster to “learn” than sticks in a tank

"läuft& läuft& läuft",sent to Ukraine👍
I'm surprised at how 'small' and minimal it is - fine for mass wartime production...the Achilles heel of course Germany not having much petroleum.
Wait, you have a DAK themed halftrack parked on sand with...A HETZER? Those weren't developed and issued until long after the DAK surrendered.
The version of Sd.Kfz 250 present in this video was also not developed or issued until after the DAK surrendered. It's the second, simplified version, also known as "Neu". It's painted in the "Dunkelgelb" base coat which was standard for almost all German AFV's starting in late spring of '43 through the end of the war. The sand is an odd choice though.
Very nice to see it in action! Do you ever use radio headset when you move the vehicles? There were a couple of "that was close!" moments😮😃
There where indeed but here we used people insight and around the vehicule to have a look. For other vehicles it’s indeed more necessary. Especially when they are very loud inside as you can see in some the other videos like “driving the Köningstiger” - “driving the Panther” …

Seems more like the clutch needs som service, than the gear box. Typically behaviour when non-smooth flywheel and steel disk surfaces. Need grinding.
Probably better to have it in low range

In my other videos you have a video of the sd.kfz 10 which is a similar vehicle, difference is that it’s not armoured 😉
It's not the gearbox, it's the driver, he needs to keep the RPMs higher and give it some clutch before he wants to slow down, while still being on the gas, then start braking.

I have some questions:
1, how is the Ride quality is it good? Is it like a car?
2, how easy is it to drive it? Can you drive this half-track like a car?
3, how much mileage does this vehicle do?
Easy to drive sort of. ride quality? I mean as good as it was back then, no power steering and loud and cramped. Not like a modern car.
Mileage is awful.
Ride , gas mileage is lousy and is more difficult to drive than a truck, visibility is limited , like most armored vehicles. But all that are brushed aside if you have to visit places where you are less than welcome.
Nobody gives a damm what mpg it does... It's not a daily driver... It probably goes out for about 50 km maximum per year.. As for comfort it wasn't built for that purpose..
It's not a car test drive, it's an old military vehicle...
@@newbeginnings8566 for milage per gallons, yes i do give a damn, it's just to compare with today's modern technologies that's all.
Ride quality is pretty good because it uses torsion bars for the tracks. So drives pretty smooth off road
Driving it is ok, you just need to get used to and learn how to drive the gearbox, that’s a difficult one, with preselector
For millage, I would need to see. We usually just fill up the vehicles and check from time to time how fuel is still in it
