    I've never understood the obsession with soft touch plastics. You don't touch the plastics on the dash and door tops, as long as they look nice and don't reflect in the windscreen, I couldn't care less if they're hard. It's a Suzuki, whilst the plastics are cheap they're still well built and nothing will fall off.

    • @banstaman
      @banstaman 8 лет назад +68

      Soft plastics do help with making the interior quieter as they absorb more sound. But in a cheap car such as the Vitara, I don't think that's important.

    • @infiltr80r
      @infiltr80r 8 лет назад +38

      Exactly. Hard plastics mean a noisy interior as all the sound is bouncing off them, not being absorbed. If it didn't matter, all makers would use cheap plastic.

    • @howarddavies3950
      @howarddavies3950 8 лет назад +11

      I agree. Plus, I've never seen a car journalist asking about the carcinogenic effects of the plasticizers used to make plastics nice and soft ..

    • @lakshmandalpadado9066
      @lakshmandalpadado9066 7 лет назад +32

      LOts of reasons for using soft plastics - 1. rattling/ creaking when the body flexes 2. Cracks/ splinters in an accident and may cause injuries 3. Sound absorbtion 4. Looks luxurious - like leather 5. more comfortable to feel and touch

      Matt and almost all the car reviewers seem to be obsessed with soft touch plastics. come on i dont wanna give a thai massage to my car's dashboard. It's a cheap car, a great value for money. what do u expect?

    I am getting tired of
    motoring correspondent who criticise certain models of cars (such as
    the Suzuki Vitara) for having “cheap plastic interiors”. Such
    criticisms might be valid for something in the Roll Royce or Bentley
    class. However, for everyday utilitarian cars, hard wearing plastics
    are practical feature. I have had up-market cars (BMW and Mercedes)
    with blinged up shiny and soft touch interior plastics. I have found
    that, whilst they might look nice in the showroom, they are dust
    magnets and show every mark. They are also hard to keep clean and
    scratch very easily. Once out of the showroom they soon look far more
    cheap and nasty than some of the more down market alternatives. I
    suspect that the correspondents' criticisms are based on trivial
    first impressions and that they have no meaningful experience of the
    long term practicalities of using and looking after these cars in
    real life situations.

    The best thing about this car is driving it. Great fun with a nippy motor. Driving position is great and so is the 4-Wheel drive. A priceworthy car indeed.

    Been driving the 1.4 Vitara for four months now, and I'm beyond happy. Got 6.5 liter consumption round town and around 5 on highway. The engine is awesome and in this price range I couldn't find anything similiar. Evoque also starts at about 140bhp, as well as other premium brands, whereas in this price range they wanna give you lawn motors in Seat Ateca, Opel Crossland, Captur, Kia Stonic etc, they offer engines with 80 or 100 bhp. And since Vitara is lighter than all of them, the math is clear. Plus its beautiful. :)

      ronch550 well my father was a forest ranger. He had very first vitara 1.6 petrol for about 20 years or so. The car hadn’t had an easy life. In the meantime he got himself another grand vitara 2.0 diesel as a family car. He still have it. I have vitara 1.6 petrol, 2016 and it’s a great car. Obviously is nothing to be excited about but mpg is very decent, it has all you need and costed much £££$$$ less than wannabes.

    I’ve the 2017 SZ-T 1.6 petrol. (Red, black roof). Only just clocked over 40,000 miles. It’s never skipped a beat. Sure it’s not the classiest car inside. But has all you need. Including Apple CarPlay. It’s comfy to drive. Reliable. And economical. With a very spacious boot. I’ve owned SUV type cars from more popular brands (QQ, Juke, P2008, Q2) and they all gave me electrical problems and bodywork issues. Not the Vitara. I’d definitely recommend, it won’t ‘blow your mind’ with driving dynamics - but it’s not meant to. And everything else it does very well.

    Good review. Am beginning to think Suzuki are actually pretty underrated as a car manufacturer.
    Your mentioning the fun to drive aspect reminded me of a Suzuki I drove last year and it was surprisingly enjoyable. Sadly in our hierarchical car culture, the badge means it's overlooked many times for far more inferior rivals.... But this has bullet proof reliability.

    I got the 2018 vitara with the 1.4l motor, automatic 6-speed and AWD. Had it for about a year now. I live in Finland so lots of snow driving, as I've taken the car up to Lapland for skiing trips and the AWD is just mind-blowing. I used to take my L200 4wd up to Lapland, but I'd say this AWD is even better than the L200, probably because the vitara is so light(also much more comfortable with radar-cruise control). I use Nokian Hakkapelitta 10 (215/65R16) studded winter tires, and it just plows through any snow or ice.
    The 1.4 engine is surprisingly fast, I manage about 8-ish sec to 100km/h. The average consumption is around 5-6l/100km during the summer and a bit higher at 6.5-7l/100km during winter. Full tank is about 42l I believe and it's 650-800km of range, depending on the driver.
    Road noise isn't bad, but not great either. It's better than my mothers 2016 Hybrid Corolla at least and about the same or slightly better than my GFs WW golf 2012.
    I've driven it about 35k km during this year, and I do all my mechanical work on it myself, but only needed to do oil changes, 3 motor oil changes, 1 differential oil change and transfer case oil change. I'm going to change the automatic gearbox oil upcoming summer. It's super easy to work on, as most Japanese cars are, and parts are cheap and easy to find, at least here in Finland.
    I bought it a year ago, for about 22k€ with 42k km on it from Sweden and couldn't be happier about it, I've driven a lot of SUVs and this one always put a smile on my face when driving.
    Ask any questions and I'll try and answer them.

      Hi! Looking for a new car and this vitara caught my eye. I have some questions if you have the time to answer. What is your experience with seats and comfort? Is the steering heavy? What about sound system, quality? I assume there is bluetooth connectivity, and can you play songs from your phone/spotify and change track using the steering wheel controls? Do you think there is room to sleep in the back of the car, of course with the rear seats folded (I'm 175cm)?

    • @Shikaz00
      @Shikaz00 Год назад +2

      @baclash Happy to answer! The seats are super comfortable, I got the leather/soft fabric seats and they hug you nicely. Used to drive a 2015 corolla before and Vitara has a lot more comfort in their seats.
      Steering is very light, I'm used to bit heavier steering, but I got used to it and I like it now, but I'd honestly prefer a bit more feedback, but it's not bad.
      It got wired android auto/apple carplay and the sound is o.k. it's not bad, I'd say it's about slightly above average or average. Easy to connect via Bluetooth, I use that most of the time and never had any issues so far.
      Yes, you can change music, change volume, mute etc via the steering wheel.
      You can sleep in the back, I've done so with my gf and I'm 181cm, it's not the most spacious, but for camping trip it's fine, but I'm planning on investing in a roof-top tent instead.

    • @Shikaz00
      @Shikaz00 Год назад +1

      @mick molloy i got the regular torque-converter autobox. The ags is probably fine for most people, but I tow a lot so the ags isn't the best for that in the long run. 2015-2018/19 vitara have the regular transmission. They're not hybrids, though. I'd recommend the older vitara, but that's mainly because i dislike manual-autos.

    The driving dynamics of the Vitara S is what sold me on purchasing this vehicle last year and I think Matt covers this in a seperate video. That sense of feeling and satisfaction you get after either a short or long drive is amazing. Everything works so well in terms of how the car responds is all sorts of different situations. Given that this vehicle has off road capabilities it is the on road abilties that impresses me the most. Note the auto version is actually faster than the manual and there are numerous reports and video that prove this.

    I rented this car this summer. It was 2wd with 1.6 petrol engine. I made some +1000 km (highway, country road and through city). Average consumption was 6,0l/100km which is impressive (i was doing +120km/h on highway). I never touch this plastic on which Mat is complaining. For me only thing which was akward was doors closing mechanism. You need to "close" them properly. Women and children had problem to close them.
    It is a good car. Now I wonder how it is td version to drive?

      I have tested both 1.6 and 1.4T versions. 1.4T (i.e. Vitara S) is so much better, not just the engine is amazing, but they have tuned up the suspension as well so it now handles the road very very nicely. 1.6 suspension is pretty much like any other UK market car, i.e. rough and bumpy on every crack of the road. The UK dealers call it 'sporty' or 'performance' suspension, lol.
      If you're interested, go for the S, it's an amazing car, not only for the price but just plain best SUV across the whole UK market. I know, I have tested all 40 of them..

    Here where I live (PH) the top spec Vitara gets a panoramic sunroof. It's pretty well specced: ABS+EBD+BA, tons of airbags, a big 10" screen, hill assist (or something like that), etc. although we only get the 1.6L motor. I think we get a nicer grill though. Price is about €17,550. The Hyundai Kona is sold by the same dealer in the same building for about €1K less. If I were buying in this class I'd have several sleepless nights deciding between the two. The Kona has a 2.0L petrol (that's either a plus or minus depending on what a buyer prioritizes) and looks more dynamic, almost sci-fi, but the Suzuki seems to have more toys. Tough choice.

    • @vorong2ru
      @vorong2ru 3 года назад

      kona is nowhere near as dynamic as vitara - it's a much heavier car so it struggles even with 2.0L engine. vitara 1.4 turbo is a much superior vehicle

      It's not that similar car! It has new engines, several new sensors and driving assistance systems, new interior and exterior design!
      Hybrid version is something completely else!
      It would be particularly useful that someone test and review new 1.0 petrol engine in comparison to the old 1.6 engine since so many buyers would naturally opt for cheaper Vitara versions.
      Also hybrid version is one huge unknown that deserves to be more thoroughly investigated.

    When you value more the looks then you have extra penny in your portfolio then buy a mini cooper instead. I'm sure you will not complain of hard plastic in the interior.
    But for practical people (like me) and don't have any plans buying a more expensive European/American car brand then buy Suzuki Grandi Vitara.

    Relatives have a 1.6 model and like it although they are swapping it for a brand new swift. I am looking at a 2016 model it's a 1.4 turbo allgrip with automatic. It doesn't say in the listing but according to parkers it's a mild hybrid model. I sometimes drive an automatic self charging kia sorrento which is really nice and quick for a big 7 seater. I don't think the vitara is self charging and will be alot slower than the kia, but looking at exchanging a 1.4 single turbo scirocco for one. Want something auto and possibly hybrid

      I don't know if you bought the car yet, but I believe only the newer 2019-> Vitaras are hybrid/mild hybrid. I got the 2018 AWD Vitara with the 1.4 engine and auto gearbox, and it's not a mild hybrid. Great fuel economy regardless, around 5.2-6l/ 100km during summer, and a bit more at 6.5-7l/100km during winter.
      The 1.4 litre engine is surprisingly fast, I got around 8,5 sec to 100km/h in sport mode. Faster than most car in the same prize range.

Its like a Tardis, spacious but only 6" longer than the 2013 Ford Fiesta so great for parking, interior room is perfect and I'm 6"1. Toured around Scotland in it and it's just a pleasure to drive, handled like my old Fiesta but with more practicality, cushions the awful British roads and fun on the corners too, it doesn't roll which shows how well engineered this car is - Japanese know what their doing.
