  • BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A SUZUKI VITARA FROM OSV: bit.ly/2HCPlYn
Suzuki's improved Vitara continues to offer a strong option in the small SUV segment and is now based around Boosterjet turbo petrol power.
The Vitara, Suzuki's compact crossover, looks to build a lot of talent into four metres. This model line's now thirty years old and these days is built around 1.0 and 1.4-litre petrol power, with the usual option of ALLGRIP 4WD. This revised model gets sharper styling, extra safety kit and remains competitive proposition in the small SUV segment.
    Background
Small SUV-style 'Juke-genre' SUV models are all the rage just at present. Every mainstream brand, it seems, must have one. Here's Suzuki's offering for customers in this sector, the surprisingly light, lithe and fashionable Vitara.
The Vitara is the kind of youthful, dynamic-looking product that buyers of compact Crossover models seem to want. On paper, it certainly seems to tick all the 'Juke-genre' boxes, with lifestyle looks, trendy cabin technology and supermini-standards of efficiency. It even claims to be a rewarding steer on twisty tarmac, especially with the 1.0 and 1.4-litre BOOSTERJET 1.4-litre petrol turbo engines that the Japanese brand has added since this car was originally launched. That really would make it different from small Suzuki SUVs of the past. There are familiar touches though: value pricing, high specifications and a 4WD option - something actually relatively unusual in this segment. It all sounds quite promising.
    Driving Experience
The range is now based around 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre versions of Suzuki's well-proven Boosterjet petrol engine. There's now no diesel option.
We'd try and stretch to the 1.4, which puts out 140PS and 220Nm of torque is available from just 1,500rpm through to 4,000rpm. This is one of Suzuki's newest units and gives this car a reasonable turn of speed, enabling it to make 62mph in 10.2s en route to 124mph. The short overhangs will help with off-roading but the 185mm ground clearance isn't that generous. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine puts out 111PS and offers 160Nm of torque.
The ALLGRIP four-wheel-drive system is available with both units. The set-up features an electronically controlled clutch pack, controlled by a four-position switch on the centre console. Choose 'Auto' and it'll stick to driving the front wheels unless slip is detected, whereupon the rear wheels are pressed into action. 'Sport' diverts up to 20 per cent of torque to the rear wheels to give livelier handling. 'Snow' offers permanent four-wheel drive with the system choosing how much torque to split front and rear, while 'Lock' splits the torque equally between front and rear.
    Design and Build
With tight proportions and a front end that has more than a hint of current Land Rover design about it, the Vitara is quite an assured piece of design work. This improved version gets a sleeker front grille and lower bumper, plus the rear of the car features revised design and distinctive LED combination lamps. There are smarter alloy wheel designs too. As before, there's also a blacked-out floating glasshouse and heavily sculpted flanks. Buyers can also specify a rugged package which adds front and rear skidplates as well as additional body side mouldings.
Suzuki cabins used to be the marque's weak link but this Vitara shows the company pulling its socks up a bit. Okay, so the idea of body-coloured metal across the dash isn't a new one (a few of you will recall the Fiat Coupe mining that trend way back in '93) but Suzuki also offers chrome around the gearlever and door trims, plus an analogue clock. This revised model gets a smarter upper instrument panel incorporating soft touch material, while the instrument cluster has a fresh design and features a colour central information display. As ever, this is by no means a large vehicle, breaking the tape at just over four metres long, but it still features a features a 375-litre boot. That's competitive with the rival Renault Captur, although the Suzuki lacks the Renault's sliding

I loved the CX3 2l engine but hated the suspension. Sometimes too stiff, sometimes too soft, never really appropriate for the road surface (they seem to have fixed that in the new models however). You could tell it was a scaled up Mazda 2, interior space was terrible and outside dimensions too large compared to the Vitara. The Vitara is awesome in terms of space and functionality, it improves tremendously in terms of perceived quality once you add some soundproofing on the doors and especially the C pillars.

I’ve just picked up my new SZ5 allgrip this weekend and this review helped my decision. I still don’t get why it’s called a “budget car”. The constant complaint of hard plastics always seems to come up and yet my Seat Leon has the same ratio of hard and soft plastics but it doesn’t seem to attract the same attention. This isn’t a good budget car, it’s a good car full stop. Why someone would pay £3-5k more for a similar car from another maker (with arguably a questionable pedigree) is beyond me and if you’re going to buy a compact SUV, and especially one with AWD, doesn’t it make sense to buy from a company who’s expertise is in lightweight compact engineering (think motorcycles) and off-road 4WD vehicles? Didn’t Suzuki practically invent the SUV crossover car decades ago before it was even called this? At a time when Nissan’s Juke (that “genre-setting car” that resembles a four year old’s first attempt at origami) was just a glint in the CEO’s eye. The likes of Renault, Citroen, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Ford etc may have their virtues but surely these other companies know about as much about AWD/4WD as Land Rover know about making a formula 1 car. Anyway, rant over, this Vitara truly is the most versatile car I will ever own. It cruises comfortably on the motorway, it’ll bumble round town happily as a shopping car, it has a lot of grip and is good fun on the twisties, especially in sports mode, and it can get you out of a muddy field and keep you mobile in slippery/snowy conditions, it will return 50mpg if you take it easy and looks great. As some reviewers have mentioned, it’s a very likeable car. Oh and one last thing, road/tyre noise? I haven’t found that to be the case at all and would say it’s quieter than my Seat Leon Estate 2.0 diesel.

I’ve got the 2016 Vitara S automatic. What the reviewer failed to mention is the huge fun to be had in Sport. You can really feel it tighten in response as the power is sent to the rear wheels, and it becomes really quite quick. Acceleration is practically instant when just kissing the throttle and it is brilliant. Note to buyers, remember to only change the mode when the wheels are pointing straight ahead, you don’t want the transmission to get stuck in a knot. The handbook mentions this of course. Oh, and the annual servicing on mine is just what I want, a direct injection turbo must have it’s oil changed regularly. All cars should have annual oil changes anyway. Another thing, three years and nothing has gone wrong, nothing. I forgot, we had to drive a new Mokka for week at work, they are horrible; terrible unsettled ride, poor visibility, cramped and zero fun. Just saying...

    • @RoadRunnerLaser
      @RoadRunnerLaser 5 лет назад +1

Unless I am very much mistaken you cannot "change modes" in this. It is an AWD, not a 4x4. It has a centre diff (which cannot be locked) and no low-range transfer case. This is not a proper off-roader. It's a snow-capable shopping-trolley. It's an insult to the name, "Vitara".
The Vitara and Grand Vitara used to be very capable yet inexpensive off-roaders. This is nothing of the sort.
Guess what happens when you lose traction on just ONE wheel in this - It spins and nothing goes to the other three until the electronic traction control kicks in and brakes that wheel and if you try taking it over challenging terrain, it's quite likely to lift a wheel because the articulation is rubbish.
We have a 2004 Grand Vitara. It was the last model they made before they went down the AWD route. At least the 2016 still has a lockable centre-diff and a low-range transfer-case making it at least capable of true 4WD (if I recall). I wouldn't touch this pavement princess with a barge-pole.

    • @TC-V8
      @TC-V8 Год назад

@RoadRunnerLaser no, you can lock the centre diff on the (AWD) allgrip version and it has a good traction control to brake a spinning wheel. Check the videos of the vitara vs All road Quattro on the metal roller traction tests.

Very fast, quiet, comfortable, very good road behaviour and spacious. A very good all-roander for me and my wife. Yes there are bigger cars but why moving lots of space all year around? @@OsvUkVehicleSupply you are most welcome! I wonder if it's possible but something I'd like to see (but I'm perhaps totally biased) is some kind of reliability review of this generation of the Vitara... ie. an analysis that displays its level of reliability since it has been out for a number of years (including the 2019 face-lift). We're getting close to 2 years with our S-Turbo 1.4 Auto and not a hiccup in sight (touchwood). A delight to drive tbh and, again I'm trying to be as clinical as I can despite being a fan, I can see myself driving this for another 5 years at a minimum. I'd be excited if they went electric by that time. Keep up the great work OSV!

Also have a 13 year old Ignis 4grip. Not an ounce of rust. A bit more 'agriculture, to drive but I love it as well, it feels like it will go on and on and on and it probably will until I decide to retire it. It's Suzuki all the way from now on.

Superb review! Thank you very much for a very in-depth analysis. We have a 2017 Sport S 1.4 Turbo delivered in early 2018 and after a year with it we are very satisfied. We had a much older previous generation with a 2.7 liter V6 engine (that we loved but it was getting very tired). Our new updated Escudo (as the Vitara is called here in Japan) is a car I simply love driving. If you are a person who really enjoys driving then you will most likely be pleasantly surprised by the peppy (although small) 1.4 boosterjet. Agreed, on rough highways, the road noise could be a little less but as you stated in your excellent review this is a small SUV that tries, with general success, to cover a lot of bases. For me, it covered enough and we love it. Cheers

On highway it practically runs alone, follows the front car if the case or accelerates alone if you change lanes and also has all kinds of sensors and warnings to keep you out of troubles. On Sport mode it accelerates like hell if you push it:). The wide sunroof is a blessing, my kids are delighted with it because of the light and the view. The Vitara line was off-road oriented before, this new model keeps a bit that heritage if you order it with AllGrip (4WD) system. It has now become more for urban environments and probably most users will never go out from asphalt roads. However, it's still reassuring and useful to know that it's still quite capable off-road (even more if you put according tyres). Actually in its category of compact urban SUV, it might not have the most premium interior but it's probably the one with the best off road capabilities. Good job Suzuki.

Hello. Good review. This generation of Vitara is very different from the previous . The old generations of Vitara and Grand Vitara were built especially for offroad - due to the separate scale-type chassis and the central differential.
The new generation is more focused on comfort and driving on the road. Yet it is a very important competitor in the segment due to the good price-quality ratio. You get enough for the money you pay. Thanks for the video. All the best!

sandoterm srl I just bought a 2014 previous model Grand Vitara 2.4, 170bhp petrol in metallic Black...its so quiet on the road, have to look at the rev counter to check it's still running lol, they really went to town refining that engine and adding extra sound proofing and apparently thicker glass...drives really well to,better than my previous Rav4...pretty good mpg as well 32 around the town,40+ on a longer run..
very happy with it...if I had known they were so good I'd have bought a new one before they stopped selling them in the UK...I believe they still sell the previous Grand Vitara in Australia,South Africa and Indonesia

In-depth fact-filled review. What I really like after 18 months' ( top of the range) ownership:-
Feels fun and light. Turns easily into corners. You can drive without using pedals, it's easy! Cruise control enables you to set 25 m/50m/75m with the car braking if necessary to maintain that distance from the preceding car. Car will beep a warning, then brake if you quickly approach a stopped/slow car. Instantly heatable seats, great for aching backs. Suede and leather{?} seats.
Everything works efficiently, with a functional, discrete design. Mine is one of the last diesels and it's quiet, except on bad surfaces, and frugal. No spare wheel, my only gripe.

Decent review overall, however, the ALLGRIP 4WD system is WAY more capable than you’ve made out. You only have to search RUclips for videos of Vitaras off-roading or in deep snow, and you’ll see just how good a system it is. Far, far more capable than something that feature straightforward AWD, and will leave systems like Audi’s Quattro looking like they’re 2WD, such is its capability.

What a fantastic car review, Bravo! Here's some reasons why:
    - it doesn't feel like a marketing campaign for competitor models (the bias on Whatcar and Carwow for example seem repetitive and swap and change 'good car preferences' making it hard to compare popular Western brands with S. Korean or Japanese makes).
    - It was informative with fantastic delivery from the presenter and a well structured video as a whole.
    - Realistic evaluation e.g. the presenter didn't put the car down because of "scratchy plastics" or "average infontainment system" as if these are what passionate motorists believe a car should have over a decent, long lasting engine etc.
    - Before these car review videos came to be on RUclips, did motorists really worry about the plastic on the dashboard and doors... Who drives day to day and checks or worries about how non-interactive surfaces feel.. I'm just pleased this video doesn't match such poor, biased reviews.
In conclusion, this has restored my faith in considering the 1.4T Vitara SZ5 (auto in particular) which I'll be thinking about in the coming couple of weeks - here's why :
    - Power when required on fast roads, safety features matching that of popular, overpriced German makes
    - only 10cm longer than my mk7 Fiesta; lets face it parking isn't going to improve in the UK if you tour or park on public roads regularly, and I'm from N.Wales and its getting worse year by year.
    - Space is very practical compared to others in it's class thanks to its boxxy shape and spacey cabin
    - Cheap to insure, who'd have thought a mini-SUV would share the same insurance band as my super-mini fiesta?! I just ran a quote through to compare my 1.0 ecoboost 125 against the 1.4T 120 Auto All grip Vitara (auto) and they were very close (around £400, 7 year license, no claims etc)
    - Japanese engineering - western car manufacturers watch the stock market, thus cars are made with less care and break sooner - it helps the car industry really if cars break regularly meaning regular repairs and shorter ownerships before getting another car.. But why? Such a waste of money and steel.
According to my market research, Japanese manufacturing and just the Japs as culture don't focus on short term profit but long term usage, satisfaction and genuine aim to improve - you only need go look at reliability charts to see who come up top i.e. Honda, Toyota and Suzuki.
The thinking man wants security, with cars that means reliability, long life and less expensive repairs - what's not smart about that?
Thanks again for a fantastic review, I liked and subscribed 👌

@@swanthequeen2144 I bought the 1.4 lt 140hp ALL GRIP GL+ version on Jan 2019. First of all, after about 12000km covered as of today, I have not faced any mechanical or other reliability issue. The scheduled service cost on Jan 2020 was €115 . The average fuel consumption with normal driving is between 6.2 - 6.3 lt/100km. The car feels very fast on the motorway and the equipment is very rich (for details please check the webpage). The breaks are very strong, but the suspension can be considered a little bit soft when driving dynamically. The infotainment system is good and responsive. May be it is worse than modern competition systems in terms of resolution and graphics. But the standard rear view camera is extremely helpful and I have noticed that some much more expensive SUVs lack (eg Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line 1.5 TSI Evo). The interior is clearly not premium but I think it shouldn't be so underrated by some reviewers. Perhaps again the competition offers better interiors but I'm satisfied overall with the general quality (for example the much more expensive Volvo XC40 T3 lacks insulation under the hood which protects the paint from the high turbo temperatures reached). The rear passengers knee space is not great for tall people.
When decided to buy this car I wanted it to be equipped with 4 wheel drive so I went for the ALL GRIP system for soft off roading. I have tested it some times on snow and mud and it did very well despite the road tires. I think that every SUV should be combined 4 wheel drive system. Today suzuki offers an upgraded hybrid engine version with less horsepower but higher torque which is better than my engine version. Well, if you don't care about all wheel drive (which I consider a must for such vehicles) you can also check the VAG SUV models (vw, skoda, seat) which are at about the same price, have better quality interiors and can be equipped with the great 1.0 tsi engine. I would also suggest checking the Nissan Qashkai which comes with a high tech Mercedes 1.3 engine. As of today, personally if I were to go for a cheap high value for money SUV I would again choose the suzuki.

Great review, detailed and informative. The only thing left out was its very high reliability record. Suzuki are always at the top of customer and reliability ratings.
I bought a new SZ5 Diesel AllGrip back in late 2015 that I intend to run into the ground. It’s now covered 65K miles, the only failure was the intercooler radiator that split and was replaced under warranty.
Averaging 55mpg and totally reliable and dependent. The AWD system has been great in the rural area where I live, never an issue in the snow we’ve had over the last few years.
Diesel torque and low emissions give an annual road tax of £30.

Vitara handled it wonderfully. Very comfortable, very stable. The only thing I didn't like was steering wheel - it felt too plastic. @@OsvUkVehicleSupply Haven't decided yet. I've been deciding on new vehicle for over a year now while my 13 years old Zafira B is very slowly dying. So far Vitara is my first choice. Your videos were very helpful!

Can anyone tell me where can I get a towing hitch bar/ receiver?

The ride quality was always rather rough in previous Vitaras, pebbles on the road felt like rocks. Is this improved or is it still a bit jarring compared to things like the T-Cross?
