I love Splinter's robe. It's odd they didn't fix Shredder's paint on the face.
Especially when they fixed it for "toon" Shredder.
Yeah the Splinter and the Shredder are totally the stars of this set.
I’m really hoping this is the start of a retro line from Playmates. I would totally buy a single release version of that Shredder and Splinter.

I hope we get a reissue of 80's April in the Mirage style, maybe wearing the more comic accurate blue jumpsuit. I definitely want some kind of Reissue of Casey, or maybe entirely new molded figures of April and Casey like with the Turtles.

I agree, releasing the original 1988 molds in the comic colors would have been better than a straight reissue of the 2014 comic versions. I bought this set but it isn't terribly exciting to me, so I'll be keeping it boxed up.
This is a very easy pass.
Playmates has a very weird strategy with adult collectibles: "we'll do our own, but we'll do it extremely half assed and cheap. We'll also sublicense it to more niche companies who excel at it, but we'll make their distribution so limited that the collectors won't want our figures but also can't buy theirs."
I'm sure Playmates designed them to be like that because how weird the original ones were..
I can understand re-releasing older figures for those who missed out on previous chances.
But on the other hand, I wish some changes were made upon re-releases.
For these Turtle figures...
Add wrist articulation & actually have belt loops & sheaths for weapon storage on the figures.
Also, give Leonardo's swords thicker handles so he can actually hold his swords nice & comfy as opposed to the very loose fit my 2014 figure has + give Michelangelo's nunchucks flexible chains (if not real metal chains like what you can get in the arts & crafts section at Wal-Mart).
Maybe even slightly different sculpts or paint jobs or whatnot.

I almost wish instead of those mirage sculpts for the turtles, they had also just done the old turtles in the mirage colors. And thrown in April. The articulation is vastly different.

I think TMNT needs to do like MOTU Origins did, updated molds inspired by the old ones, but with more articulation and the ability to swap parts. Granted I know the part swapping only really works for MOTU cause they're basically the same mold with different heads.
That shredder is terrible
I recently came across the comic book Shredder figure by itself at San Diego Comic-Con Special Edition last month along with the Movie Stars Super Shredder reissue figure. Both are great!
I've never had any problems with my original shredder standing up. I'm actually surprised that it's so notorious apparently lol
I hope Playmates starts to put some Turtles back on the pegs at Walmart or even Target. Sucks not seeing any new TMNT figs when i go out hunting.
Set was ok, glad they at least bothered but would really appreciate a follow-up set with Casey, April, Be-bop, Rocksteady and whatever other two
-->> The 2014 teen reisssues here were originally designed to have the wrist swivel. A handful of customizers have restored this along with various, decent comic-like paint schemes. The repaint Shredder and Splinter clash badly with the Turtles, in this set.
LOL dude that damn 80's Shredder! The color scheme is nice, but in my opinion, you just can't polish a turd. Don't get me wrong, that original Mick Jagger Shredder is definitely iconic, but still. Just the most un-aesthetically pleasing figure ever. It's the most so-bad-it's-good figure I've ever seen LOL
That repainted 80's Splinter, though? I actually really dig that one, and I love how his paint scheme not only captures his comic book appearance, but looks very much like an old fashioned New York City rat would look. Very nice. The Turtles are nice as well, and I can see that a major difference between these and their original releases is that these are way more shaded. My only issue with them is the lack of weapon storage for those collectors who want to open and play with these.

This is just a reissue of the turtle figures we had during the 2012 show run + an awkward repaint of g1 Splinter and awkward squatting Shredder, very underwhelming and lazy.
The movie box set MIGHT be good, but Playmates has been doing such a terrible job with their own bread and butter license.

I love these turtles so much but posing is just a struggle ... if they had the 2013 turtles articulation they would be my all time favorite...I have all of them but I’m gonna get this set for the splinter and shredder cause I’ve never owned the original playmates version just the turtles
Hey Dan! I think the Shredder in this set is actually based off of the Shredder reissue that Playmates did back around 2012-2013 as a TRU exclusive. I bought that version of Shredder and it also has that changed leg stance like this one here. I fully agree tho, if they had repainted the vintage turtle figures in the Mirage colors that would have made this set so much better. Great vid man!

If I recall most of the vintage figures were based on the comic so the splinter and shredder make a bit of sense I guess
The "shading" sculpt would've worked if they actually put a little money on the figures and painted the lines black...

Shredder and Splinter are freaking awesome! The Turtles are kinda meh...The NECA versions are way better. Leonardo was my first NECA TMNT toy :)

do what i did: figure out how you want the hands positioned with the weapons, use an exacto knife at the wrist and reposition the hands with glue. makes display options a lot easier and, thanks to the wristbands, you can't even tell it's been done.
I was thinking about getting this, but I have those turtles already (both color and black/white). And was disappointed that we didn't get new molds for Shredder and Splinter. Shredder still has his "eyebrows"....
But if you don't already have them, I say get it.
I love the retro like figures. I saw a deal that was ralphiel and Mikey for like 17 dollars it was worth it

Lookin pretty rough. I own most of the turtles playmates, and I don’t expect much from them. But the price is more digestible, which I do appreciate.
Would've been cooler if it were an actual figure size VW van instead of repainted figures.
I hate how the hands are positioned on the turtles.
Great review as always! These are my least favorite TMNT figures bc of all those weird detail and slashes. Articulation isn't great either. The NECA figures that came out in early 2000's are still the best!

Yeah Playmates really screwed up this time on the turtles. Might as well sold the box with actual comics inside
A neat idea for a set and Splinter and Shredder are pretty neat repaints of the vintage molds. Although I feel like they were better off using the vintage Turtle molds and repainting them in comic colors. They did that with the Splinter and Shredder in this set, why not go all out with the vintage look. They still got the molds for the vintage Turtles, don’t they? Not to mention the Turtle molds used in this set aren’t exactly well liked by most collectors I’ve seen.
Also I think I saw that new stance for that old Shredder mold used on certain reissues a while back.
Nice video, I was not aware of these figures at all until I saw this.
Despite all these flaws, I’m still gonna try and buy it. Playmates hasn’t really been doing so well by the looks of things, and these are actually really cool looking. Plus, I don’t think we could live in a world where the company that made our TMNT childhoods would go out of business.
Buying crappy merch to keep a multinational afloat is not the way.

Its a decent set, not the best but its ok. I wish people would stop bad-mouthing Playmates talking about what a garbage company they are. That's a bit of a stretch. I think Playmates is doing a splendid job despite some set backs. People can't say its a bad company just because they produced a few bad toys. Like enough is enough they are not a bad company. That is my opinion though since a lot of people think otherwise
I agree, yes Playmates does cut corners and reissue a lot of their older toys in new colors to save money, but other companies have done far worse in my humble opinion.

That's because he didn't have one in their first appearance, which is what these are based on, same as the NECA ones.
Do the new figs have larger peg holes on the bottom?
It feels like Playmates is getting so rattled by NECA and Super7 killing it with their Turtles that they panic and try to make these bizarre sets...and don't think it through.
Even giving them wrist swivels it wouldn't fix the problem i cut my figures hands off and game them the swivel but the way it's molded makes it kinda suck
I did the same with mine I got years ago. I hated how Raph held his sai sideways.

wide stance shredder was already a thing when they were doing the re-releases oh where were we, 2000's? for the 25th anniversary edition classic re-release collection and again in 2013 they did it again, so that was part of their re-tool version of Shredder. even though on the back of both boxes then, they showed him with classic squat.
Why would I have to buy any of these they’re all just using Moulds from previous ninja turtle lines and then just re-painting them classic colour scheme

Great video Dan, these are not good figures , if you want good comic book turtle figures go find the necs ones, even the bootlegs are really good.

@@kingmarkseven17 their all over Ebay, i got a set and I'm 99% sure they are ko's but they are well made, do a search on Ebay they all come from China. There are reviews of the ko's on RUclips, surprised Pixel Dan doesn't have any, he usually likes the ko figures. The ko turtles come in these tube packages, but i think neca released them in those tubes as well at some point.
I bought a second vintage Shredder last year because I wanted to customise it to look like cartoon Shredder instead of paying for the toon Shredder figure and it had legs like the one in this set. I was very surprised. I think it must have been a reissue of the original Shredder and that's the mold they used for the comic Shredder in this set.

Not sure if its going to be the turtles but neca did mention doing mirage stuff after the Arcade stuff (one more wave) which will be available on web stores and mom and pop comic shops .

I enjoyed your review! The packaging is definitely the highlight for me! I think your ideas for improvements on this set are brilliant! As is, even though I am definitely the target audience, the quality isn’t good enough for me to want to spend money on this.
I don't often disagree with pixal but I do here. Not a particularly good toy. More of a cash grab than anything else.

Man I really wish they had done the comic style paint on the original sculpts with new belts, instead of reissuing these 2014 turtles.
I passed on them due to the “comic style” etching being carved right into the plastic rather than done in paint.
They just look like they have weird huge scars everywhere.
The only thing keeping me from buying this set.
Splinter and Shredder look awesome in the comic paint, also the box is cool.
