The song for when you first realize that you've been killed but aren't allowed to die. For this reason, way back then when I first played it, I came to the conclusion that Demon's Souls was one of the most horrifying predicaments for any video game protagonist to find themselves in. I'm hard pressed to think of actual horror games that bad.
drewskyGALE Majula feels empty as fuck. The music is awesome, though. But the place in itself feels like it lacks substance ( much like the rest of Dark Souls II )
PyramiDie I'd have to agree with you. The gameplay mechanics and graphics are the best that the Souls game have had to offer but the story was really lacking.
drewskyGALE To me, the backstep is way better. The dodge could benefit from some more clearly displayed s and most mechanics ( level up, upgrading, repairing ) were watered down. I respect you opinion, but to me, DkSII was truly disappointing. Still fun to play, though. It's tough love, I guess xD
PyramiDie Well to be completely honest if I'm going to compare all 3 games to each other then clearly Dark Souls II is the worst of the 3. What I miss the most from Demon's Souls were bosses like Flamelurker, False King and the Maneaters were brutal. Dark Souls II just took the approach of more is better. The bosses lacked substance. They thought "how could we make it harder" rather than how they could make the bosses more memorable. Flamelurker was a bitch without the flame shield and it was an epic fight.
My friend was playing this game when I stayed overnight and already fell asleep but through the sleep I could hear this song I got real mysterious feeling. It is so aesthetic, pure magic.
Played DS1, DS2 and Bloodborne and just started Demon's Souls. All games have fantastic "hub" music (considering firelink shrine the hub of DS1), but this one is definitely the most calming one for me, such a nice song.
I've played ds1, 3 and BB and just started demons souls, not too far in but I just love this song, this and the hunters dream music are my favourites. Also is ds2 worth buying cause I've heard so many mixed reviews, I know this comment was a year ago but just wondering
DS2 is my least favorite one, but i think if you don't mind spending the money or can find it on sale, i still recommend playing it. It has it's good moments as well, and it's always nice to see how things can be done "wrong" in this series, makes you appreciate the other titles more. But that's just my opinion! You might end up loving it :D
MrToastedCrumpet dark souls 2 is worth a play through it has done thing better then the other parts of the series and other stuff is just a step in a different direction not bad a good game but just held down by the fact dark is in the title
@@jdrok5026 Dark Souls 2 is worth a go if only for how good the crown DLCs can be. It's definitely the one I'd recommend going for last if you have the urge to play Souls but you already played the others.
This is still one of the most special pieces of video game music, to me. It's so relaxing and unsettling at the same time, and it evokes this equally mixed nostalgia for me. Over two years ago, I beat Bloodborne, my first From Software game. That very same month, I got into my car wreck and moved into my own apartment, closer to work so I wouldn't lose my job. I was alone and scared and had no money or transport, and Demon's Souls was the first game I played there. It was the only comfort I had. Sometimes even if I didn't feel like playing, I would leave the game running in the Nexus with this music on, just to keep me from feeling completely alone.
What easily describes this for me is, being outside when it is raining crazy and thundering (almost being struck) but finally making it inside a home with towels and coffee/tea. Warm after a dreadful experience.
This piece is so nostalgic and calming man. It made you feel so safe from the dreary world of DS and a moment of peace in the hard times of my life at the time
At 3:22 you can hear someone knocking/ brushing up against either their instrument or turning the page of sheet music in the background It's subtle but definitely noticeable especially with earbuds
you have no idea how hard I laughed when I listened to the new dirty colossus theme and heard ANOTHER choir. the new music's fine, on its own there's nothing wrong with it but DAMN does it miss the point.
I can see what they were trying to do, but it comes off as though the composer's philosophy was: "If there's a second of silence, put some AHHHHHH-ing there and it'll be epic."
@@suedonnym It seems like the composer did not care or understand what made the old tracks so fitting, good and memorable. He probably wanted to put his own spin on them but got so carried away in the process of trying to make them sound different, that now most of his tracks sound almost nothing like the original and convey a completely different picture (Grand and epic instead of atmospheric, melancholic, simple etc). The new tracks are by no means bad, but they just don't feel or sound like demon's souls to me.
@@reaver5247 My thoughts exactly! I like a lot of the new tracks but they don't convey what they used to. The Tower Knight theme used to sound mocking and haughty with its laughter, then it crept into a slow, almost melancholic section, the laughter juxtaposed by the wailing chorus. The new one is just bloated and bombastic.
@@alessandroparducci4952 your opinion, I just state mine. The OG songs felt way too cartoonish, even for OG Demon's Souls. And no, they would NOT fit for Remake, as well as Remake OST wouldn't fit for OG DeS.
This could have been the only track they didn't need to touch for the remake and that would have been dandy. But in their attempt to make a better version for the remake, they made it so fucking busy...
Unquestionably better than the remaster, I'm not going to be one of those guys who says everything in terms of music is worse in the remaster but this track in particular highlights what's missing in the remaster's soundtrack which is the principal of restraint.
Why are you afraid to bash on the remake's OST by adding that disclaimer in your sentence? Just be honest. The entirety of the remake's OST is hot fucking garbage compared to the perfection of OG's. Look at how badly they fucked up the Adjudictator's theme.
@@breathofthewild1749 I am being honest I like some of the new material but just not most of it. Which is why the new soundtrack is so disappointing imo they had the tools to make something great but squandered it by not reading the room. It gets so bad in some spots though that I don't understand how blue point could have been anymore tone deaf like with dragon god, I laughed out loud when I first heard the remake of dragon God's song.
What I find beautiful about the soulsborne game’s themes are their duality. Especially when it comes to the hub world. It’s calm restfulness mixed with the need to move forward. It’s the peace of a dream with the feeling of something sinister. It’s the feeling of having support but being utterly hopeless at the same time. It’s genuinely amazing how much power music has and how much it can change a passable hub location to what feels like an actual second home of yours.
At the end in the remake this track lost its calm and resting feeling for a melodical tone, which is more for show. Don't get me wrong, is good; but it lacks of the intention of this piece (Which is a theme meant to rest and breath, just as the arragement is with its long silences: like a litteral deep breathing).
+Malcefium Mike Demon's Souls still might be the best in the series overall. If not for gameplay, then for the gigantic emotional cavern it leaves during its entirety. fell in love with the Maiden in Black haha
+raas96 Its by far the most atmospheric souls game, I shed a tear by the time I finished Demon's Souls, knowing I'd never quite have an experience with a game quite the same as this one.
+Richter Well Demon's Souls feels like a game that replicated a book about knights and demons in a war. Dark Souls is moreso about fantasy and medieval concepts coming to life into a video game. Totally different realms. Dark Souls has a hotter and hopeless atmosphere to it, and Demon's Souls has a more melancholic and dream-like fable atmosphere to it.
Demon's souls is one of the best video games I have played. look at this ost, this ost is so beautiful , calm with a touch of sorrow strange but you feel safe, the nexus is a masterpiece itself. a true fucking unique experience.
Entirely agree. It serves so well to put a great deal of contrast between the sense of safety in the Nexus and then immediately warping to, say, The Tower of Latria aswell. Its truly excellent.
Every track is better in the original, for my taste anyways. The soundtrack is by far my biggest issue with the remake, it's a downgrade in every way. All the unique and interesting choices made for the original soundtrack have been discarded in favor of the most generic orchestra and choir combination you've ever heard. The instrumentation and melodies of the original soundtrack gave it an incredible atmosphere that is nowhere to be found in the remake.
@@MarkHogan994 As a first time listener to both, I can't really say that I prefer one over the other. I mean I get why everyone likes the old tracks, but I like the new ones too. And maybe it does ruin the original intent, but perhaps the new intent is just as valid? Like with maiden Astrea, in the original it was meant to show you your betrayal of a genuinely nice person who used their demon powers for good, but in the remake, it feels like it's meant to be a theme for Garl, her knight, who is her last line of defense. All in all, I won't judge your opinion, because it's as valid as my own, but for petes' sake people, just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad. Worse maybe, but not bad.
@@MarkHogan994 the silent gaps in this track are cool but having a gradual fade would make it sound better, whereas it just kinda sounds like the audio was chopped up in Audacity. Nostalgia has driven people to thinking this is perfect
It's different for no reason, and it's worse overall, even if the new devs intended another aproach or a new interpretation of the scene, it was not their right to do so, and that's the problem with the whole remake, they really really missed the point of the original game, all the points in fact, they wanted to do their own thing it seems and sell it as what people loved.
For anyone that’s wondering this is the original Nexus theme that plays until halfway through the game. The track titled “The Nexus” actually plays during the 2nd half of the game.
I still had my ps3 since a month ago, never bought ps4 or ps5. Had major emotional and academic problems in my first two years of university, decided to shut-in whole summer of 2019 and play ps3 games. I got my hands on a copy of demon's souls after completing some generic ps3 games, curious about how this kinda game even managed to gain this much popularity. A month later I was 300hrs in loving every second of it. I usually had my ps3 on my desk near to my laptop so i could look up things on wiki or just to spend time on net and i would never turn the console off. Couple of days later I realized I was turning the volume up whenever i was in nexus being afk, just to listen the ambience. Nexus felt like home to me. It was safe, some people in it were lessons to learn some of them were desperate, some obscure. I related to a lot of it. This game is a surreal puzzle with a lot of psychological themes in it. Whenever i come here to empty my mind sometimes i think about the unusual things, bold decisions Demon's Souls contains. Maybe everyone has a nexus inside them.
Yeah, this tracks remake in particular is just noise. I'll say that most of the Remake tracks are fine on their own but in comparison with the OG OST they aren't as good i feel
Here's how I feel. Demon's Souls has better, more intriguing stories. But Dark Souls has vastly better gameplay and the main story is more coherent. If Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were books, I'd enjoy Demon's Souls more. But since they are games, I prefer Dark Souls. It works better as a game. But really, all in all, I love them quite equally.
For me personally Demon's Souls gets by on the sheer strength of it's art direction and the atmosphere of each of its areas, also I find the minute to minute level design to be better than Dark Souls, and some of what it does like you said is infinitely more intriguing. But yeah, Dark souls has better gameplay and the interconnected world gives it a wholly different feeling to Demon's, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's plot is more coherent. I think Dark souls spells out a lot more of its plot for the player oddly enough, whereas Demon's leaves much more up to interpretation. But yeah, I love them both XP
Dr Famine Strange because I feel the opposite. I think Demon's Souls has a way more coherent story that has some great stuff in it, but ultimately at the end of the day, I felt like there was more that could have been done with the story. Stylistically, I like Demon's Souls and Bloodborne more, but Demon's doesn't ever feel like it has a climax, probably due to how rushed and broken the game was. They didn't even have enough time to finish the last quarter of the game. Dark souls is extremely convoluted, but I feel it's story is stronger, mainly because I'm a sucker for how nihilistic it is.
The best hub world/safe haven track of any Soulsborne game so far. Hunters Dream comes a close second though. I just don't get why this had to be changed so radically in the remake. As an aside, I do love how two of the places you can find the Maiden when you return to the Nexus is over by Stockpile Thomas, (as if she's comforting/spending time with him) & waiting by whichever Archstone you've used, waiting for you to return. She might not have much dialogue but FromSoftware did a great job of endearing her to the player.
Lunk firelink shrine which dark souls 1 was useless as a hub unless your talking firelink altar which is better but still nowhere near the levels of the nexus
Calling it now, with the release of the DS Remake, Silvagunner is going to upload just the first 7 seconds of this song and the rest is utter silence. And then we'll tear him limb from limb.
I like to listen this with dark souls ambient bonfire in the background for maximum comfort, despite them not being the same game that fire crackling noise fills the silence perfectly
This music gives me shivers, it just screams emptiness and loss. The way the tonic descends further and further down, from C to Cb, then the step all the way to A and Ab (perhaps symbolising the massive fall down to the Nexus), then G and Gb, F, E and Eb, D and Db, before finally arriving back at C, at which point the melody begins on top. And all so mournful. I adore Dark Souls too, and its soundtrack. Though nothing has hit me more emotionally than this piece.
Love the remake but god damn talk about missing the entire point with the ost. I hope they add an option to switch to the old music tracks in a later update like resident evil did.
Let these souls withdrawn from their vessel manifestation of disparity elucidated by fire, burrow deep within me retreating beyond the reach of flames let them assume a new master, inhabiting ash casting themselves upon new forms . . . . . . . . May the flames guide thee
Even 9 years of since playing the game for the first time - and as I currently play Bloodborne, I can still remember this peaceful melody in my head. It's beyond beautiful.

drewskyGALE To me, the backstep is way better.
Hmmm I may give it ago after demons souls, may as well play all of them, plus it's been re-released on ps4 so why not
MrToastedCrumpet dark souls 2 is worth a play through it has done thing better then the other parts of the series and other stuff is just a step in a different direction not bad a good game but just held down by the fact dark is in the title
This is like 1000x better than the remake version. That is a bummer.
In my heart, She will always be my maiden.
What easily describes this for me is, being outside when it is raining crazy and thundering (almost being struck) but finally making it inside a home with towels and coffee/tea. Warm after a dreadful experience.
sounds like a delightful experience to me!
This piece is so nostalgic and calming man. It made you feel so safe from the dreary world of DS and a moment of peace in the hard times of my life at the time
If you sync this with the sound of a clock's ticking, it's in perfect rhythm. Between each bar, there are a total of 7 seconds of silence.
At 3:22 you can hear someone knocking/ brushing up against either their instrument or turning the page of sheet music in the background
It's subtle but definitely noticeable especially with earbuds
"I am in trouble--Please recommend this message!"
Get it right.
Yeah this sounds really nice, how about we ignore what makes it good and add some choirs in the empty space.
People like choirs.
you have no idea how hard I laughed when I listened to the new dirty colossus theme and heard ANOTHER choir. the new music's fine, on its own there's nothing wrong with it but DAMN does it miss the point.
@@suedonnym I had to laugh as well when i found out there were only like three tracks or so that don't use choir. What a goddamn shame.

Every track is better than the remake ones imo

The OG songs felt way too cartoonish, even for OG Demon's Souls. And no, they would NOT fit for Remake, as well as Remake OST wouldn't fit for OG DeS.

This could have been the only track they didn't need to touch for the remake and that would have been dandy. But in their attempt to make a better version for the remake, they made it so fucking busy...
twitter.com/manfightdragon/status/1320362247684714499
Unquestionably better than the remaster, I'm not going to be one of those guys who says everything in terms of music is worse in the remaster but this track in particular highlights what's missing in the remaster's soundtrack which is the principal of restraint.
Why are you afraid to bash on the remake's OST by adding that disclaimer in your sentence? Just be honest.
The entirety of the remake's OST is hot fucking garbage compared to the perfection of OG's. Look at how badly they fucked up the Adjudictator's theme.
Bluepoint dun fucked up
@@breathofthewild1749
I am being honest I like some of the new material but just not most of it.
The only good remade tracks in the remake has to be the main theme and Adjudicator (which is the ONLY boss they followed the original melody for)
@@ImGonnaFudgeThatFish You must be crazy. The Adjudictator remake theme is garbage.
Jeez dude.. Demon's Souls feels so old now, I can't believe the final Souls game is out on the 12th. What a ride and end to a crazy series.
KAZ Jeez.
Yes! The most atmospheric. That's what I always say. Something about Demon's Souls' atmosphere that the other games in the series didn't replicate.
+stef360xs So calm to hear, so...peaceful...i love that sort of OST.
Entirely agree. It serves so well to put a great deal of contrast between the sense of safety in the Nexus and then immediately warping to, say, The Tower of Latria aswell. Its truly excellent.
Last year through the winter I listened to this everyday, on the way to work.
So much better than the remake's version
same with return to slumber
@@sleepyhead644 I didn’t say the new soundtrack is better, I just said the unnatural gaps and this song isn’t as good as people let on
It's different for no reason, and it's worse overall, even if the new devs intended another aproach or a new interpretation of the scene, it was not their right to do so, and that's the problem with the whole remake, they really really missed the point of the original game, all the points in fact, they wanted to do their own thing it seems and sell it as what people loved.
For anyone that’s wondering this is the original Nexus theme that plays until halfway through the game. The track titled “The Nexus” actually plays during the 2nd half of the game.
"Life is hardly as precious as one might think."
ahhh this is still such a banger in 2024. The first break in the tune is so impactful. Genius
I can relate this with the character creation menu from DS1... What an amazing game.
Damn did the remake drop the ball with some of the soundtracks, especially this one.
Yeah, this tracks remake in particular is just noise. I'll say that most of the Remake tracks are fine on their own but in comparison with the OG OST they aren't as good i feel
"Gender Type A and B" the game has nothing on the original.
Damn did your father drop the ball with you
Here's how I feel.
+Dr Famine Is it weird how Demon's Souls art style reminds me of covers to books, idk why lol.
Dr Famine
Strange because I feel the opposite.
Dark souls is extremely convoluted, but I feel it's story is stronger, mainly because I'm a sucker for how nihilistic it is.
that is exactly how i feel, demon's souls for pve, dark souls for pvp
I had a huge head ach and somehow this is soothing my mind and releasing the headache, Miyazaki thanks for this amazing series.
I find myself coming back to listen to this often. Some of my best memories with my brother is directly connected with this song.
I miss this game so much, the last time i play was around 2010
The Nexus was so much better than Firelink Shrine, not only as a hub but also in terms of the atmosphere it generated.
Lunk firelink shrine which dark souls 1 was useless as a hub unless your talking firelink altar which is better but still nowhere near the levels of the nexus
it was so good, they copied the idea of the nexus for dark souls 3. Though the Nexus is in more of a Zenith than ds3's firelink shrine is
I feel like Majula nailed what firelink was going for and made it almost as good as the nexus
@@rustingflamberge Majula is great, nails the ultra comfy feeling of the nexus. The music isnt quite as good but the scenery is lovely

This game has the most atmospheric soundtrack and visuals. One of the reasons I love it so much.
My most favorite soundtrack in any game probably. Sad that many players will never experience it. Because they will only know the remake.

I like to listen this with dark souls ambient bonfire in the background for maximum comfort, despite them not being the same game that fire crackling noise fills the silence perfectly
"Touch the Demon inside me!"
Thus thou want my Sticky White Stuff?

favorite part about this is that you can listen to the whole thing then when it ends, you barely realize that it actually ended.
Love the remake but god damn talk about missing the entire point with the ost. I hope they add an option to switch to the old music tracks in a later update like resident evil did.
Wish remake had the option to toggle between OG versions of the OST and the new one
