It's said that he'll appear as a man of peace, and will seemingly preach good, but he'll use a fake gospel, a brilliantly fake gospel, to do so, thus ultimately damning all of his followers to hell. In many interpretations, he would not even be aware that's what he is doing, and will continue to believe he is doing good until the last. Of course, there's also the real-world history of this passage. If you are not a believer, you can easily assume it was written to combat the greatest threat to Christianity - any other charismatic faith leader whose teachings would pull people away. These passages were once quoted against Gandhi, and some ultra-conservative Catholics now use them about Pope Francis' doctrinal deviations. In all, food for thought.

@StormRevolutionGaming The brilliance of this whole thing, is that you can't actually say any of them have done anything unreasonable from their perspective. The Depraved Ones had someone arrive to alleviate their suffering for the first time in forever, and then stay there, and devote herself to them. Why wouldn't they worship her? Why wouldn't they kill the knights who would take her away from them? Why wouldn't they take the souls of these jerks, none of whom cared about them being condemned to a swamp while they wore their shiny armour, and give these souls to their goddess so that she can get stronger and heal them further, and possibly transform the valley as she grows in power? Likewise, Astraea knew that there were other Archdemons, and that they would feed The Old One with souls regardless of what she did. Even if she could have stopped them from killing the outsiders, it would have made no difference if the Demon Slayer wasn't around. The minions of some other Archdemon would have eventually reached them, killed them, and taken their souls, all so that their master could get larger and more destructive. If you don't believe the world can be saved, is it wrong to make its last days remotely bearable for the most screwed-over people in the entire world? If the Demon Slayer wasn't around, or if they died somewhere along the way, and the player dropped the game, all of that makes perfect sense. However, you are there, you CAN save the world, and now you have to kill her to do it. From this moment on is where your resolve became absolute. No longer is this a mission of salvation or condemnation, but only a mission that must be completed. Not only would you go to crush all those that stood in your path - be it good or evil or simply in the way - you would become the most powerful being to ever wield the power of a Demon's Soul. Yes, indeed. This is where the true Demon's Souls begins.
Still gossbumps back in my gold days of 2011. Still waiting for the f*cking ps5 only for the remake. Deepest bossfight and story of a boss in from software games.
It sure is an ungrateful task to accomplish, but it needs to be done, and no one else than the demon slayer can do it. Maiden Astraea’s song is the perfect embodiment of “the path to hell is paved with good intention”.
This is basically any Western developer trying "rebrand" a franchise from a developer of another country. They do this for movies, anime, games, shows everything. Stick to the OG, you don't need shiny graphics to make a masterpiece.
I really wish FromSoft would at least try to recapture moments like this. The fact they can just flip the formula of "finish level > beat epic boss" on its head for the emotional response it gives the player is so good and, honestly, more compelling to me than their current thing of multiphase boss fights designed to make the player feel epic
@@shinyhydreigon7257 No, because Elden Beast is boring and the "Wow effect" only lasts something like 10 seconds before it gets annoying, especially since you have to fight Radagon all over again each time. If both were sepearate bosses I would have said that's a valid comparison, but with how the game is made, it's far from having the same effect as Saint Astrea or Old King Allant
Why serve the story with creative gameplay when you can slap on another 2 health bars and give them a 36-hit combo that takes hours to learn the dodge timing?
One of, if not my favourite boss fight of all time. This track conveys the emotions of the scene perfectly; a sense of dark foreboding clashing with a serene and pure beauty, with a strong dash of peril for the player, Garl, Astraea and the people of swamp as it hammers home that sense of absolute desperation. I think it also invokes how the player feels about themselves, knowing that defeating Astraea is probably the only thing you can do to save the world but everything about it feels terribly wrong, as if you're the villain in their story, which you are. Absolutely wonderful, depressing, bleak and it is the soul of Demon's Souls to me.
Anyone who still feels sorry for her has missed the point of her character, or perhaps fallen under her spell. She IS a demon now, one of the most impure, if not the most impure, for a reason. As if her quest wasn't reckless enough, she has damned those who dared follow her. The "people" for whom her heart bled never really needed her help - she only prolonged their suffering, not alleviated it, even if it seemed otherwise. Her misguided sense of compassion doomed all involved - her followers, her companion, her subjects, and herself. Ask her about the blood babies in the swamp - and her reaction will tell you all you need to know. No mercy.
I'm sure you gamers will understand... my tears from this music and from this feels would be enough to flood New Londo... Am I the monster? Greatings from Moldova - B'leckn Norroy!
@Dantarn The saddest part really was when he was a black phantom... he doesn't chase you like the others, he stays at the spot he defended. He remains at his post even in death.
I remember long before Demon's Souls got a western release seeing a lot of internet chatter stirring about this game. The first clip I saw was the Tower Knight fight, the second was this. While they were major spoilers, they sold me on the game.
You... you killed him, didn't you? Very well. I can no longer resist you. Do as you like. Take your precious demon souls. i love that boss so much and Demon's Souls will forever have a special place in my heart
That's what I love about the Souls games. A lot of times you find yourself in a morally ambiguous situation, or something that seems blatantly obvious but if you look hard enough you see the true meaning. But no matter the cost or the meaning, you know what has to be done.
Astraea and Garl Vinland, truly a great boss fight. Up to that point all of the demons you fought were these monsters and when you finally make it to the end all you see are two humans. At that moment you realize it's not the physical appearance, no it is the actions one takes with that power that truly makes one a demon. This fight also shows how good intentions can ultimately do great evil. Still doesn't make the fight easier though, morally speaking.
Well, the thing with Sif is that with the DLC, the game pretty much presents you the chance to save the doggo, and yoinks it away right in front of you. Astraea makes you think you are cruel. Sif shows that it's the game.
Sif fights you because you're his friend. He recognizes you after you saved him and he confronted his masters killer with you. He fights you because he doesn't want you to be corrupted by the Abyss like Artorias. We know that this doesn't happen because you walk out the abyss unharmed after the 4 kings are slain. Sif however couldn't take that chance.
Best song from Demons souls, it just fits the battle and the characters so well, its the tragic moment were you realise that your character has truly became a demon himself...
The whole reason you’re slaying demons is to become one yourself to entice the old one into taking you as it’s new demon (over allant). You can either lull the old one back to its slumber or you can become the demon
As a souls veteran that started with this game as a mere child, I can appreciate anyone who wishes to understand the meaning behind this game, how great it is, and how beautiful it is. Who would of knew that games could be so thought provoking such as this...
As someone who's never had access to the game, can you explain the background of this character to me? The Sif comparison seems to be eclipsed by this boss
Dylan S So within the story Lady Astraea and Garl Vinland venture into the fog to ease the pain that the wretched/unfortunate have faced within the Valley of Defilment. When they arrived they realized that the valley was even worse then they had anticipated. Babies being sacrificed and others killed off by their own or even worse-the plague that infests the valley. No matter how hard the fair Maiden tried her miracles were not enough to ease the pain and reserve the damage that had been done. In amidst all of that somewhere within the lore she comes to the realization that “God” is actually the “Old One” (Which is true) not only being the source of soul arts but also the catalyst to miracles themselves. She then would sacrifice her humanity and soul to “gain the power beyond human imagination” in order to make her miracles beyond what her mortal abilities could ever achieve. Around this time is when we enter as the Demon Hunter. We kill her bodyguard (Garl) which also happens to be her lover and ultimately acquire her “Pure” Demon soul at the end of the boss fight. No demon can be “pure” yet she remains as such. Despite her actions she always stayed true to helping those of the Valley of Defilment and her dedication towards her faith and her morality is what continued to prove her purity. Which leads us to reflect upon ourselves at the end of the fight if we the Demon Hunter even have any humanity at all or have we possibly already have become so monstrous and lustful for souls that we have become a product just as vile as the demons themselves. Thank you for reading... There’s more but this is what I know and basically all you need to know. You can always look up anything else or the rest of her lore to be safe. 👌🏼
I ask you, who is the real demon, a woman who protects those left to rot in the bowls of the earth, showing them naught but kindness. Or perhaps is it you, the player, you could have left her alone, but all demons must be slain? When you kill all the demons, there will always be the demon inside you.
This thought is what made me get the bad ending. I was convinced that something was going on behind the scenes. That, combined with how I felt about the final boss, led me astray during my last encounter with the MiB. I'll give Demon's Souls credit for screwing with my head, but at the time I was so annoyed at my worthless good guy playthrough.
Barkley Like three seconds ago my brother told me "too much Dark Souls" cause I was spamming him with the soundtrack, and then this notification shows it's head!
Well, if Astraea would be let alive, the Old One couldn't be stopped and the world would get shrouded by the Fog and overtaken by demons. Astraea can be a good hearted person, but she stills a servant of the Old One, she knows what would happen to the world. Maybe, she didn't care about it, cause she was delusioned. You're in a quest to save a world that is in the brink of extinction, surely you are not the worst demon. Besides, I think Astraea could have learned the soul arts, she surely could help by using it, instead of becoming an archdemon. It seems to me that, delusioned because she thinks that god abandoned them or doesn't exist, she just don't care to what will happen in some time.
@@lordsakai3450 This is the painful irony here. If the Slayer of Demons never existed, if they died somewhere along the way, or even if they succeeded, but chose the evil ending, then everything Astraea did was totally right. She looked at a war against the demons that was effectively lost, and decided to spend the world's last days on helping the most unfortunate people of even the old world. It is only in the timelines where the Slayer of Demons succeeds and reaches the good ending that she's wrong, and would have been better off making it to the Nexus or the like. This is not that different in any real war where you have to choose sides before you know how it ends up. You can end up helping quite a lot people, especially if you are a medic like her, but you risk getting ground underfoot if you choose wrong and end up as an obstacle to one of the victorious side's heroes.
This sounds like something out of an old Ace Attorney game somehow. Maybe it's the soundfont or the way it was arranged. Nevertheless, whenever I listen to Maiden Astraea's theme I always end up imagining Wright cross-examining a witness or facing a counter-productive plot twist. I guess that's part of something only the Demon's Souls OST seems to archieve: each song is amazing, yet so different from the rest.
It's not a huge ringing choir like the other boss fights. It's long, high, weeping strings and a constant harpsichord that runs in circles, and then a couple of higher sharp strings like gasping for air. JESUS this is so pretty oh my god. that's heartbreaking. I think the remake failed to capture the tragedy of the original.
It wasn't about thinking it was the fact sony gave bluepoint a orchestra and money to create a soundtrack it's kind of impossible to preserve the original track without some changes on that level, but yes they should have an option for original OST hell even original graphics
my first experience playing this game... I just fell in love with the atmosphere. I loved how it changed with every area, and the gravity changed as you advanced in each respective area... but this area specifically. To find the maiden here, and Garl Vinland defending her to the death. You truly do feel like a Demon when you come here for your precious Demon's Soul.
Nah, there is no way to remake these two games "right". Both games are flawed masterpieces with something missing due to schedule. If you don't make any change, you are lazy and cash lust, if you add too much, you destoryed the original feelings of these games. A HD legendary collection of all souls games would be more reasonable.
@@alexandreleguen8952 and who say it was changed ? , they just added some dark epic note in the melody, and I'm not okay with that .. the fight was pure tragedy and the theme also
@@alexandreleguen8952 I will explain to you. The enemies redesign, instead of something of From Software, looks like come out of Warcraft, Final Fantasy or Balder's Gate. The music of the original is special and unique is very ways, the rescore in the remake is almost unrecognizable, and is too epic for the tone of the original, who the ost is almost for a horror game (check the Flamelurker's theme of the original and the remake and compare them). And of course, when Bluepoint recreat the areas they are thinking more on "tessellation is missing, polygons are missing, more more motion blur, this need more global illumination, more particles and flassy effects, god rays are missing" etc.. instead of really compromise to care the atmosphere of the original.
@@joshuawiener5003 it was hardly a remake. All they did was add 5-ish armor sets and redo the music and voice lines. They got rid of the ability to delete saves and they still haven’t fixed the lingering hitboxes from the exploding barrels in boletaria. They didn’t even patch the talisman of beasts + curse weapon glitch. The only thing they did fix was the stockpile Thomas dupe.
After playing this game, i got so many references in dark souls and dark souls 3. I noticed today that Vinhelm is a huge reference to Vinland. Freide is somewhat Astrea, she is also "helping" a bunch of diseased bird people in a swamp. her swamp is just mostly snowy
You know...this isn't really Astrea's theme, nor even Garl's theme. This is your theme. It represents you in your cold-hearted pursuit of power. Because whatever you're striving for in the end, anything before that is just another obstacle.
@Balyr Yes, this was also the first fight where what you were fighting wasn't something "evil". Astraea wanted the power to help the wicked inhabitants of the valley, and thus accepted her demon's soul. She also figured out that god and the old one were pretty much the same thing, so weather it be miracles or magic, it was all the same. She tried to use the power of demon souls for good, like yourself, but in order to stop the old one, all demon souls had to be gathered, including hers.
I love this theme more than any other. it just fits the boss so perfectly, better than any other boss in any other game. and the boss itself.... its really hard not to feel bad about yourself. god I love this game.
Demon's souls isn't my fav of the series, but this boss is my favorite by far. It's such a beautiful and tragic end to the valley, and the music and dialogue really sell that.
Astraea was my final boss before the ending, simply because I went through the archstones in order. Her fight was the culmination of the "corruption" of my character, their becoming a real Demon after all the killing. Needless to say, it was a perfect setting for a certain ending...

I really wish FromSoft would at least try to recapture moments like this. The fact they can just flip the formula of "finish level > beat epic boss" on its head for the emotional response it gives the player is so good and, honestly, more compelling to me than their current thing of multiphase boss fights designed to make the player feel epic
They absolutely still do that. Elden Beast is a prime example.
@@shinyhydreigon7257 No, because Elden Beast is boring and the "Wow effect" only lasts something like 10 seconds before it gets annoying, especially since you have to fight Radagon all over again each time. "DEMON VANQUISHED" but I still see the demon standing
Pure genius. Best game ever.

Bad news
No mercy.
the sheer spite in her voice when she says"take your precious demon's soul"
I'm sure you gamers will understand... my tears from this music and from this feels would be enough to flood New Londo... Am I the monster? Greatings from Moldova - B'leckn Norroy!
@Dantarn The saddest part really was when he was a black phantom... he doesn't chase you like the others, he stays at the spot he defended. He remains at his post even in death.
To me, this perfectly captures the tragedy and misery of the world of Demon’s Souls. It’s sad, hopeless, but beautiful in a way, I love it.
I remember long before Demon's Souls got a western release seeing a lot of internet chatter stirring about this game. The first clip I saw was the Tower Knight fight, the second was this. While they were major spoilers, they sold me on the game.
"May you rot in the deepest depths of this swamp."
After everything I've done, that's not even unfair.
That harpsichord though.
You... you killed him, didn't you?
Very well. I can no longer resist you.
Do as you like. Take your precious demon souls.
i love that boss so much and Demon's Souls will forever have a special place in my heart
The saddest boss fight and OST for a boss fight.
That's what I love about the Souls games. A lot of times you find yourself in a morally ambiguous situation, or something that seems blatantly obvious but if you look hard enough you see the true meaning. But no matter the cost or the meaning, you know what has to be done.
no.. please... i can't do it... not again
This music is the reason I am playing Demon Souls on PS3 blind right now. And once this music hit on my tv my heart was broken.

Boys: Wahhh, poor Sif, he's so innocent...
Men:
Well, the thing with Sif is that with the DLC, the game pretty much presents you the chance to save the doggo, and yoinks it away right in front of you.
Astraea makes you think you are cruel. Sif shows that it's the game.
Sif fights you because you're his friend. He recognizes you after you saved him and he confronted his masters killer with you. He fights you because he doesn't want you to be corrupted by the Abyss like Artorias. We know that this doesn't happen because you walk out the abyss unharmed after the 4 kings are slain. Sif however couldn't take that chance.
yeah but at least i dont have to buy a console just to fight sif
Sif is sadder
Best song from Demons souls, it just fits the battle and the characters so well, its the tragic moment were you realise that your character has truly became a demon himself...
This theme feels like the last beats of a heart dying heart
Imagine this theme plays after Patches kicked you off the ledge in DS1 and then you have to fight Nico, Vince, Petrus, and Reah
Here to this day listening to this beautiful theme
This is simply perfect.
C.S. Repraved Led you.... Astraea. Maybe that's why they named her that.
I almost cry
The remake sound: How sad that we have to fight.
The original sound: Have you ever thought what the fuck are you doing?
It's not a huge ringing choir like the other boss fights. It's long, high, weeping strings and a constant harpsichord that runs in circles, and then a couple of higher sharp strings like gasping for air.
JESUS this is so pretty oh my god. that's heartbreaking. I think the remake failed to capture the tragedy of the original.
Dude I don't know why but it feels like I'm gonna cry listening to this OST yet the tears never fall wtf 😭
The first time i heard this while playing my reaction was, oh hell no and i turned back. Dem chills.
What were Bluepoint thinking in remaking the soundtrack? Why can't we enable the original soundtrack?
It wasn't about thinking it was the fact sony gave bluepoint a orchestra and money to create a soundtrack it's kind of impossible to preserve the original track without some changes on that level, but yes they should have an option for original OST hell even original graphics

Nah, there is no way to remake these two games "right". Both games are flawed masterpieces with something missing due to schedule.

"take your precious Demons soul"
"What are you doing in my swamp?!" -Garl Vinland
I feel that this song and boss is so memorable because it's so different from what we have seen and heard up until this point.
Power or saving the world, it depends on the ending you choose
the road to damnation is paved in gold
@Balyr Yes, this was also the first fight where what you were fighting wasn't something "evil". Astraea wanted the power to help the wicked inhabitants of the valley, and thus accepted her demon's soul. She also figured out that god and the old one were pretty much the same thing, so weather it be miracles or magic, it was all the same. She tried to use the power of demon souls for good, like yourself, but in order to stop the old one, all demon souls had to be gathered, including hers.
The one true Maiden Astraea theme, fuck the remake's version.
