i just don't risk fishing the rocks out west. far too risky especially with massive swells like that despite good fishing. just not worth it because one mistake is all it takes
Awesome vid im not a fan of west coast fishing ive fished whangarei east coast and north a bit almost every eeekend for 16 years had one particularly close call the day a guy drowned a few kms away from us we shouldnt have gone but my mate was leaving to go back to Switzerland to live when we got to the fishing spot at dawn mid winter climed down the cliff the swell wasnt the 2m we had thought woulda been 6- 8ft or so we were fishing a good 15 or 20 ft above the water tide was 2hours or so down when we got there could see where it had been and like txt book right on low tide we had some waves come in higher than where the water had been at high tide lost all our kahawai a centimental gaff and a knief and hooks we had our bags up way higher luckily and to add to that to get away from a huge wave like that was a hardcore quick scramble up a face with bugger all to grab onto was one of the scariest days we coulda been gone wave came up right over me anda mate was like being hit hard with solid few buckets of water id clung to the rock thinking im gone few 2nds felt like for ever after that i pretty much stoped fishing my other mate kept going and hooked a fish that woulda gone 20 pound just to rough line hit the rocks🙄 that was 10 years ago done heaps of winter storm fishing and what not since then just find calmer areas with mean current and bit of surge plenty of burley👍 a fish aint worth ya life👍

In the past i always wanted to experience what its like to fight big snapper and I had researched on forums people said a spot up the west coast so I decided to give it a go. Believing the daylight changes more productive i left at 11pm and went off the rocks down the cliff with no experience at all, as I approached near the spot i could hear the echos across the cliff bashing up against the spot all along. I went down and one came through and wiped all my fishing gear, tackle box, bucket and bag. All was left was my berley in a onion sack ready to be thrown out. My hand torch was also lost, i had to creep around behind the rocks to sleep while getting sprayed with ocean back lashing after it smashes against the rocks. Never again not worth it
Excellent excellent video! Having a fair bit of experience on some ledges my self I have been hit out of the blue twice now, once back into the water. The fact is that you must remain constantly vigilant because the moment you relax is when they come for you :)
Have been fishing the rocks in NSW for a bit, and the swells here are very predictable and I've only encountered probably 1 freak wave over the course of 3 years. I recently did some landbased fishing in NZ, and I found the weather and swell to be unpredictable and fast changing. It is a dangerous sport regardless, the ocean is to be respected.
Interesting comparison. NSW is well known to have its dangerous spots, but yeah NZ is well known to have all four seasons in one day. Makes it hard to predict conditions even for locals.
Yeah mate its not for everyone out there, Im getting too old for it myself, but the scenery is next level spectacular. Nothing bad about the harbour though,... although this summer has been hard work for a feed the times I've been out.. .

Sonny Fai is one of the fatalities you talk about where family members dive in to save a loved one then drown, while their family member survives.
I usually fish from a boat, but if you're in a situation like that where you might get hit and need a lifejacket, should you wear a helmet instead? Getting tossed into the water and drowning seems just as likely as getting your brains bashed by the rocks on the next big set if you can swim or float.
When the children of God does these things, we are putting a lot of pressure on the Angels who are looking after us, unseen of course. Sometimes they have to leave, and that's when you know what happens. For if God willing, one wouldn't even stub one's toes. And the Golden Age we were promised in Isaiah 11:6-9 will never come about if we keep hunting the creatures of God mercilessly. Think I am delusional. Well, think about power and influence today. I think we as a nation are quite updated in knowledge on how power and influence generally works. Can anyone today or in the future get everyone to mark the Year after themselves? Not really, quite impossible. But the Son of God did. Now, Who really is sitting there in silence and out of sight, watching us to see if we will keep the Law, is it the devil?

Yeah they do that in Aussie in a lot of the spots. Permanent anchor points you can easily rope up to.
