Foveaux Strait, New Zealand is prone to vicious storms, big swells and ever changing weather conditions and on top of that, the divers have to overcome freezing temperatures and the inherent threat of shark attacks.
Spiky Gold Hunters follows six courageous, rough, tough, and charismatic characters as they battle the tempestuous elements of Southern New Zealand to deliver the gastronomic equivalent of diamonds to fine diners around the globe - sea urchin! This series is not for the faint-hearted - and nor is the environment these divers work in.

Hardest job. I did this when I was in my one digits with only a mask no snorkel. We were always diving every summer. 38 years old now and a qualified master diver. Born for the ocean.

As I watched 'Spiky Gold Hunters,' I found myself oscillating between awe and trepidation, mesmerized by the daredevil antics of these sea urchin divers and yet, simultaneously disquieted by the perils they court with each plunge into the unforgiving depths of Foveaux Strait. On one hand, I applaud the filmmakers for capturing the unbridled camaraderie and esprit de corps that animates this band of brothers, their banter and bravado a testament to the bonds forged in the crucible of shared adversity. And yet, on the other hand, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of concern at the risks they take, the sheer audacity of their endeavors, and the potentially catastrophic consequences of their actions. Ultimately, I suppose that's the paradox at the heart of this documentary - a thrilling, if occasionally uncomfortable, exploration of the human spirit's capacity for both cooperation and recklessness.

Suicide rates in NZ did anyone really care?
The rate for self inflicted harm in NZ sits in at around 617 deaths for 2023. NZ has a capacity to not care as much as people think they do.
Everything these days has taken a turn for the worst.
Per 100,000.00 people in the NZ population the rate sits at 11.2% in 2023.
    Suicide rates for
    2022 538 people
    2021 607 people
    2020 628 people
Total suicides for the 3 years:1773
Over the three years from 2020 - 2022
The hallmarks that create such an event are Selfishness, Greed, Self Centered in other words the perfect breeding ground that allows people to think they are better then others and then create an environment that looks to install fear into people.
One day a young fine looking maori school student realising he was in a bother looked down, staring back at him where his old worn out school shoes,
with the soles coming away from the shoes, his school taunted him saying "Looks like your shoes do all the talking for you" the previous day.
With courage the Pupil then asked his mum "Mum can you look into buying me a new pair of shoes". She snapped back "Look Hemi I just dont have enough money for these things, besides I have all the other kids to care for as well as you, maybe another day though" just like she had promised him the other times.
Undeterred the school student grabbed a roll of black duct tape and wound around the shoes and around to refix the soles back to the shoes.
Then he grabbed some black paint to paint his repair job.
Next day he presented himself proudly to his mum "Look Mum good as new" then chuffed move off to go to school. On Arriving there at school this young man was berated, belittled and teased for the entire day today even more so then other days.
Not long after school finished he went missing and they found him hanging by the neck in his mums shed.
