I've been looking into the hands as of late, while trying to decide what space marine chapter I want to chose as my favorite. The iron hands absolutely deserved better, I like the direction they were going with with the kardan stronos plot line and wish it was finished.
If Ferrus had survived the heresy, the Iron Hands would have been who they always should have been, and not the mechanical shadow they are now. One of the most tragic legions, both of the loyalists and traitors, they really didn't deserve this fate.
No I think they would have remained the Flesh is Weak, how ever, they have gotten better since the Heresy. In my opinion, I mean Kardan Stronos is better than Ferrus. He understands emotions aren’t weakness, and his quote is “though Iron makes us Strong, without Souls we are nothing.”
Will you be doing a deep dive on either the Dornian Heresy or Roboutian Heresy AUs? Also there's this more recent Horus Heresy AU called the Lionel Heresy (made by Paint_Newb) that had the Iron Hands fall to Slaanesh instead of the Emperor's Children

I always felt the Iron Hands got shoved under the bed, ive yet to find a great novel focused on them in the 41k timeline
