Hi Margaret, thanks so much for sharing such great videos over the years! I’m sure someone has shared this with you since posting this video (or you’ve figured it out), but just in case, you don’t have to cut the waste yarn from the cast on edge. I like to pull the yarn tail that was initially cast on back through all the loops in reverse for one round. After that, they will unravel just like the waste yarn on the cast off edge. you are right. I tried your technique of using the crochet hook and I got the smooth edges. It took me three years to master the addi express. I have been knitting and crochet for 15 years now and I wanted to learn new things about the sewing world and was having some problem of getting straight edges without the circle. Thank you so much for this video. It worked beautifully!
I'm so glad! And I haven't mastered the Addi Express... as a matter of fact, most of those Addi videos are my attempts at learning and sharing what I figured out! There were hardly any circular knitting machine videos when I got mine. Maybe you should make some videos to help ME master it! I find flat panels so tedious...
Thank you so much for this video. I have found this method other places recently but you are the first to really tell me what is the 1st stitch and where to find it exactly.... or you're the first that I understand. I was guessing which to start with and this led to me missing a stitch here and there. In regards to the waste yarn removal, I have done the ripcord method and it works great. Even without it, I don't cut the waste yarn, I just pull the starting end, the one closest to the actual work and pull each stich out and it works perfect. Since this is 7 years ago, I am assuming you have tried other methods now. You're the best thank you so much for helping me understand the 1st stitch!!

I know this is a 5 year old video, but I have turned to it again & again over the past few years. I only use my Addi Express King around the Holidays to turn out scarves & hats, and I need a refresher on closing those ends. Thanks for leaving this on RUclips & providing such a clear and understandable directions! It works first time-every time.

Hi Margaret. I am doing a bunch of very narrow panel scarfs (5 sts) for some adorable small wood snowmen made by my Son In Law for a school fund raiser. I reviewed this vid of yours to refresh my memory on finishing the scarf end edges. Tip - I am now using the shoe string cast on (using waste yarn) on almost every thing I intend to finish by hand. I cast on as usual with the contrasting waste yarn, knit just 1 row, then immediately go to my main yarn, leaving longish tails on the waste yarn knowing it will not unravel. Once you have picked up end sts or done the 3 needle bind off, you can just pull the 2 rows of contrasting waste yarn out easily if you clip the waste yarn between the cast on row & 1st row (at the end). and not risk cutting the main yarn. I still do 5-6 rows of waste yarn to cast off. For these extremely narrow mini scarfs I just did the knit cast on just like you demo in the advanced finger less glove thumb hole part since I add a little fringe. Margaret Olander, Thank you for posting this video. I am in the very early stages of working with yarn and the Addi, have enjoyed all of your videos. Am now in the process of creating a afghan using the Addi king ( nothing like taking on a big challenge for beginner). Doing tubes of 50 rows each and wasn't sure how to end each one until seeing this video.

Great job showing this technique. I have been aware of it for a. couple of years but no other video that I have found showed the technique clearly enough that I could actually see what was happening. Its so simple and I am so glad to finally understand it.

The ends look great look great and so nice to have an alternate to the " gather all together" at each end of a scarf. I have never used scrap yarn on my Addi yet but I must as I want to add the nice crocheted edge to m hats. Thank you for another great and helpful video xx

The cast one side you do not need to cut it off. I have never cut it off. I just find my 2 ends and the end on the top (of the blue in this video) i just pull til its tight til it meets back to the end undo those 2 stitches and it will unravel the whole waste section for you.

To get the fringe to lay correctly you alternate the direction that you pull the loops through.

I really enjoy learning more about the addi express machine. It just now occur to me that I can make infinity Scarfs on the king size machine. Getting the edges to come out beautifully takes real patient and talent. I thought I share this silly thoughtwith you. Did you know you can make infinity scarfs on both machines? All you have to do is just sew the ends together!
Hahaha! Why, yes... I was aware of that! 😜 I don't bother with the "patience and talent" for infinity scarves, though. I bind off as usual, pull the yarn tails to gather each end and tie them together. Once you put it on, the tied end is behind your neck and when you loop the scarf over your head, the tie is covered.
Also Margaret, I love all your videos. I came across your infinity scarf video and loved it, but failed to save it. Could you please paste the site where it is. It's the one where you tie the ends together.

Hello there! I recently purchased a small knitting machine to make socks. I think I understand how to remove the waste yarn if the end is closed but I am stumped as to how to remove the waste yarn at the open end. Your channel is so extensive. ah what I meant by *master* was to figure out what projects works on the addi express. And to learn where to sew the ends of the projects together. You can make anything by using the addi express but only you would have to sew them correctly. Plus I heard you can make circles on the small size addi too. If you make a 100 small circles you can make a blanket. One video I found was from a young woman called Yay for Yarn. Is the nickname.
Yes, I've seen that circle blanket and it looks like pure TORTURE to me! Hahaha! I feel like I could hand knit a blanket faster than that thing!
Very nice finish end. Would you consider doing a video how to knit with the addi using stoppers?? Some people have not have any problems but I am lots of extra yarn hanging.
I haven't used stoppers yet and, at this point, haven't really cared to venture much into flat panels but Suzy Notting has recently done a wonderful video on flat panels which is the exact same technique used with stoppers. #1. Addi Express Flat Panel Tutorial, Suzy style
If you find the cast on stitches, you can release your waste yarn without cutting.

you have really great videos, keep up the good work. I've tried a few of your techniques. what I'm looking for is a way to do socks - heels - on the addi. I did come a cross one video but can't seem to find it now. I think it was somebody like laura risinger? but no luck googling that. any help would be much appreciated.

This is brilliant, I love it! Any advice for making better edges on tube scarves you want the ends open on? Mine always come out looking a little frumpy because the bind of and on edges are more loose than the rest of the scarf.
Thank you, Laura! I've never done this and left the tube open but now you've got me thinking... hmmm... I know that casting on and off with wast yarn is KEY to those tension issues so whatever I come up with with start and end with waste yarn on the machine!

Margaret, I cannot thank you enough for your videos! I now have both Addi’s and the Singer machine, so am busy making new things! ONE quick question: Using the above information, I want to make a Log Cabin Afghan. HOW best do I connect the tubes? Your finishing method above is wonderful (as I was stumbling around trying to make those ends smooth!) Now, I need to know how to connect each tube into the log cabin motif. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated! I’m just using scrap yarns right now, just to get this first effort done as to learn how to connect all the tubes. I am making the tubes with the Addi Pro. Again, thank you so much for your videos, as I am a visual learner and they are a God-send!
+Linda Smith Thanks for the kind words and now I feel guilty having no solution to offer you! I don't know exactly how I would connect the tubes which is one reason I haven't attempted this project! If you don't keep the tubes perfectly flat and connect the exact right stitches, the blanket won't lie completely flat. That would bother me. It would be warm and cozy but the waves and/or lumps would be all I could see! I wouldn't have the patience to mark a line of stitches in each one with scrap yarn before joining but that may work for you. Have you asked anyone on the Facebook group Addi King Loomers and Knits?

The waste yarn does not need to be cut because it is the cast-on toy simply need to be patient and pull the cast-on yarn through all the loops in the top tow and then you can pull it loose just like the cast-off end and save your waste yarn on both ends.
I never have to cut my cast on edge off. All you have to do is pull the first tight strand out, and then the second one and then it should pull off complete in one piece. I do this all the time and have never had to cut it off.

You don't have to cut waste yarn. Instead find the tail that weaves through the top of waste yarn and pull through each stitch around until it starts to unravel in its own. Watch Koala Knits and knacks for demonstration❤

Victoria Murphy Cowl = a scarf with joined ends, right? If so... then yes! They're all over my videos! Also, I've recently done a tube with a stretchy bind off on both ends. Somewhere between 25 and 50 rows is good.

You certainly could. This is another option... especially if the Kitchener stitch gets on your last nerve!

Victoria Murphy No, I got that for $7 at Target last year. Upon close inspection, it's woven not knit or crocheted.
"What would you do?? Would you buy an addi express to make mitts on and socks (socks would be like work socks)?? or just use a loom.??
If money is an issue, I definitely wouldn't buy an Addi. All this can be accomplished with an AIO loom or one of similar gauge. An Addi is fun and fast but it's definitely the "icing on the cake."
Hi, Margaret. I've just bought the large and small Addi machines. The stitches on the cast on edge come out loose and the edge rolls up. How do you get the stitches to match the knitted piece and have the edge be flat? I enjoy your videos. Thanks, Ellen
No matter what you do, stockinette will roll up. It's just the nature of the stitch. BUT, as you can see in this video, starting with waste yarn takes care of the looseness of the initial cast on tension. You'll just have to do some sort of bind off by hand before removing the waste yarn so you won't lose your stitches.

Maybe for a child but I know they'd be way too tight for me. However, you could do flat panels and seam them for a custom size.

aleryan (I had to watch the video to see what I was wearing!) Nope, that was a store-bought scarf that I got for a whopping $7! It is knitted horizontally so you can't replicate the color changes on the Addi which knits vertically. Single crochet would be a good option using gradient color changing yarn in a light weight with a small hook!

How would you get the thumb holes on some fingerless gloves made on the small addi? Any ideas?

Hi Margaret. How wide of a scarf can I expect from the King size machine? I am knitting for a charity project the has a specific window for the widths they accept.
It depends on the yarn you use but you can count on around 6 inches for something like Vanna's Choice. A thinner yarn will be a little less. Sorry I don't have exact measurements to offer!

No, that's a store-bought scarf and it's actually woven, not knit or crocheted! I'd love to learn to weave!
How long did you make your scarf?

How do you weave in your ends for this type of bind off?
BloodyButterfly My philosophy for weaving in ends in ANY project is just figure how how to do it so it's not seen! No particular method; the end. (Not much help, huh?) Remember that you still essentially have a tube (albeit flat now) so after securing, you can run your needle through the inside of the tube and out one side, cut your yarn and hide the tail inside the tube.

+Richard Donato Stockinette stitch curls. The end. Doesn't matter if you knit on an Addi, needles, loom or flatbed. The only thing you can do about it is by doing something different to the ends. This video is one example; putting brims on hats is another. Gather the end of scarves and add poms or tassels. Join the ends of scarves to make a continuous loop.

I haven't loomed in years. You can, however, adapt the Addi projects to the loom....
