  • s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) sailed from Martha's Vineyard to Newport Rhode Island, with an overnight stop in Cuttyhunk Harbor in the Elizabeth Islands.
    In Cuttyhunk we had our first boat collision incident since we have Cloudy Bay - a yacht dragged its anchor and collided with us in the middle of the night. And we sustained some damage to the gunwale and gel coat.
    Once anchored in Newport Harbor, we spent 4 days in the beautiful town, with a balance of both exploring the town and boat maintenance.
    First, we received several packages of parts and did some maintenance (installed replacement wifi antenna, service bilge pump and generator exhaust).
    In Newport itself we wandered this historical yachting center of the USA, the quays, wharfs and old town. After the Cliff Walk, we visited some of the Newport Mansions which were built in the late 1800's, most of them overlooking the Atlantic coastline.

    After years of watching your videos, I have this fabulous surprise from you. I recently found out I’m descended of the founders of Rhode Island, and I wanted to know what it’s like to sail there. After wasting time on videos by my doorknob-compatriots, I found absolutely beautiful coverage by my favourite RUclips couple: one of them rose-clad, no less. Miss you both.

    One of the Cutty Hunk traditions I would have liked to have seen is all the people on the little ferry dock who jump off the pier after the ferry departs. Quite precious.

    Never going to look at your videos again when having breakfast, I nearly died. When you were fixing the generator you dropped a piece of tool or so, I had to laugh. Things like that happen to me too and I go crazy. Lol
    You mad my day 😉

      Roland, we had a feeling a few people would enjoy seeing both the frustrations and satisfaction of doing your own maintenance. We too died laughing when we first saw that clip! In the heat of the moment when doing those things, the last thing I want is a camera in my space, but so glad Oana persists because it makes very good footage.
      Thanks for the comment.

      Silvio. Thanks and glad you enjoyed. Lots more to come. This one had a little delay because we drowned our PC keyboard with a cup of tea! But now fixed with new keyboard. Gotta love eBay and the speed of delivery in USA. :)

    We had thought about trailering to and setting off from the west coast after the refit... but thanks to your videos, now the crew is reconsidering the eastward option. Decisions, decisions...

    I love your style, editing, sense of humor and restraint. So sorry about the damage to Cloudy Bay. I hope the person responsible will pay for the repair.💲 It's so refreshing to see a man wear a pair of proper length shorts. The new fashion of to the knees and longer just doesn't fit the bill. To each his own personal preference I suppose. I loved the Newport Mansions and Cliff Walk and proud to observe Old Glory at half-staff to honor Senator McCain. Thank you for taking us along.👍

      @SailCloudyBay  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the lovely comment. The person responsible was OK on the day, but since then not so receptive. Yes those shorts are very comfy. I probably get a lot of “gay” type comments but comfort is everything and we are certainly not the type to get our fashion clothing on whenever the camera is out .... not that we have much fashion clothing on board!

      Thanks for the nice comment. Yes, when we repair the various impact points it will certainly be filmed. Will be done next time we are out the water, likely Antigua.

    Sorry about the boat guys.......I would have filmed the boat that hit you and put on video....lol...I’m sure your pissed....what is your solar set up...Watts, panels, rail mount set up etc......please let us know the details of how the insurance claim process went....

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  6 лет назад +2

      Each 24v panel is 125 watt rated. So with full sun we get up to 250watts or 9+amps @24v (27v for charging). They are wired into the Mastervolt Combi solar regulator in parallel and each has a diode to stop back leakage should one panel be charging and the other in shade. We had the pushpit extended so that we had a hard rail to mount them on. The extension and mountings were custom made by a very good SS guy in Almerimar, Spain, called Arcglow. We specifically wanted 2 x 24v panels in parallel rather than 2 x 12V panels in series, so that one in shadow did not dilute the other. Realistically, with 2 fridges and a freezer going we only just about manage keep the batteries neutral (no % charge drop) during sunshine hours. So they are only a top up really. We cannot rely on them to actually charge the batteries. We need the engine alternator or generator to do that. That said, if we leave the boat for a trip and only leave one fridge and the auto bilge pump on, then the batteries are kept topped up over a 2-3 week period.

  • @hd_thumper

    Can someone please answer, if oil and water don't mix. Then why don't sailors use wood oil on there teak wood to protect it from the elements, plus it would give the wood a nice look?

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  5 лет назад

      Applying teak oil is an option, same as people do with garden furniture. But over time, in the sun, the teak goes all black and sticky when applied in a marine environment. It really doesn’t look good. There are other products but all the experts on this say to just leave it bare, don’t scrub it and only wash gently with seawater. Then you get that lovely bleached white look.

    • @hd_thumper
      @hd_thumper 5 лет назад

      Thank you for answering, I always wondered why every boat, yacht had that bleached look.

  • @youngypaul
    @youngypaul 6 лет назад +1

    Did you find the boat that dragged? Getting their insurance to pay for that?

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, the yacht that dragged ended up a few meters astern of us. All polite and OK at the time. But sadly not so polite since, trying to put the blame on us, and still waiting for his insurance details.

      You might need to return for some gunboat diplomacy, we wouldn't blame you. Americans like John Kerry park their boats in Rhode Island? We refer to guys like him as scumbags. The Battle of Rhode Island revisited...
