Glad I found your channel! As a bass player for about 13 years now I always love the approach of simplify a melody to add or modify a groove. 👍🏼 I think, if you add a simple drum track in the background this would be an awesome addition to "visualize" your ideas better, especially when leaving out notes to create a room for groove. Cheers from Germany and take care! 🙏🏼
I will say this vid openeded my eyes to a couple of things. Also if you don't mind answering. Have you ever experienced pain in your picking/plucking hand? Even after refining your technique and how is the best way to avoid it?
Hearing all this advices is truly great for myself I truly want to push learn hard on extra fret and notes and etc to be more of a Bass Player. At the same time want to take it slow and enjoy my bass and have fun.
just 4 notes and it's music, as almost beginner, i fully understood the idea, thank for that, it's very helpful to improve the groove with something technically easy allowing to feel something...
great vid as always Bully. got one question for you: do you like the Aguilar Tone Hammer amp series? I see you've got one in the background. I just bought the 350 and im waiting for it to show up. Thanks!
Yo Bully, not sure if you’ve done a vid on this before but what are some beginner technique mistakes many people don’t think about until it’s too late?
I hope you found some answers somewhere! My most important mistakes were: - Ingnoring the little finger while playing and just focusing on the first three - "flying fingers" or not using all fingers as a support for the middle, ring and the little finger while playing single notes (if you delete this mistake, your playing will be much smoother and the back of your hand will feel less sore) - not playing in a comfortable position (so practice while sitting and standing, take your time to adjust yourself, setting the height of your bass via strap it's not about style, it's about feeling good while playing) - not warming up before playing (just give yourself 5 minutes & play some scales, adjust your speed, slow -> fluid -> fast) These were my mistakes and some advices for you. Take care and have a wonderful time with the Bass. 🙏🏼
Great tips Bully! I think for myself I would hear basslines that had that “feel” I wanted to achieve and study what they are doing and Learn them either by ear which can take longer if your a newer bass player or even look up tabs just to help you understand what frets are responsible for that “feel” they are getting. This is more for beginners who are still learning the fretboard. Great video Bully!! When he says “feel” he’s probably really talking about “phrasing”
Bully sorry for the extra comment, just want to add that you are the reason I changed the name of my channel to “BASS IMPROV JAMS, on your giveaway I realized that most of the ones you had for top 10 had “bass” in the channel name if it’s just “my name” for my bass channel how is that’s going to catch peoples attention. So I thank you for that, I definitely took something away from that giveaway maybe next time 💪😊
This kind of practical advice is much appreciated. It's ready to go, easy to put into practice and endlessly explorable. Thanks, Bully.
1:10 That's a great tip. I used to incorporate staccato into my playing.
Abraham Loriel said even if you only play something on one string, "just feel something"
AL most definitely got into his bass playing.
Feel Something.

This actually made me legitimately feel better about my own playing 😂. That it’s ok to modify the written music to suit your own style.
