First off my wife is venezuelan. I hear her families struggles everday. Many have been kidnapped on multiple occasions, they can't find a decent job, and ironically enough they have to drive around to 5 different gas stations before they are able to find petrol(in Venezuela!!!). Is he directly affecting me? NO. But as a compassionate human I feel for the people of his country and other countries who don't know what it is like to live with real freedoms and without fear.

Socialist dominate systems don't work. You need a mixed economy that combines capitalism and socialism to some degree. That's what you'll find in Norway which has oil like Venezuela. Their oil is run by the state but most other industries are run by the private sector.

"Their oil is run by the state but most other industries are run by the private sector." yeah, just like in Venezuela that has a smaller public sector than norway and one of the most privatized healthcare systems in the americas. That said, real socialism does work, Yugoslavia ftw.

As much as I would like to see that happen, unfortunately it won't. Venezuela has the third largest oil and gas reserves in the world. Maybe you've noticed that despite the economic crisis, people are still driving, America is still buying, and after a short hiatius, gas prices are still climbing.
Like it or not, with billions of dollars flowing in everyday, Chavez is here to stay. In Venezuela, a country where half the population lived in poverty only 10 years ago, he has become a hero.

His country is no more on the verge of collapse than the entire world is because of the financial crisis, the one that the US brought about.

You said it: Statist. In real practice, merit gets relegated down, while personal connections and toadyism wins. He who kisses the leader's behind gets promoted, while those who work hard, and point out mistakes are punished. Show an example of a socialist state, there the state is considered to be what the people serve, and not what serves the people, that hasn't ended up as a cruel dictatorship or an economic ruin.

The problem is that Chavez is an elected President who has displayed no criminal tendencies (in reality, as opposed to the myth and fantasy which constitute much of the opposition's argument) & compared to the opposition themselves, who have murdered quite a few people.
Perhaps if the US didn't have such an extreme economic system and pose such a violent existential threat to Venezuela then perhaps Chavez would not be seen as a threat or feel the need to fight so hard to survive.
    I'm with him.

It just so happens that Americans are very inventive and generally smart and know how to produce goods. And the world is a better place because of it. I think the world seems to lose site on what the world be without the U.S. Theres not a person in the world that hasn't used a product from the U. S.

Refining petrol was at an all-time high in the 1970s, but HALF of the countries children DID NOT go to school. On May 20 1993 the then president of Venezuela, Carlos Andres Perez, was indicted for the theft of more than $7 million and he got 2 years, yet another president involved in extramarital liasons, Perez subsequently left his wife to take up his mistress... New charges were later pressed against Perez, who was over the age of 70, and his mistress Cecila Matos for having secret accounts

In a free market system, there are no recessions or depressions. If you read history you will discover that all depressions and recessions were caused by gov intervention. In the US, industry is highly regulated. In the banking sector, there are laws that say that a percentage of loans must be to low income individuals. This isn't the banks choice. If they dont comply, they will be fined or worse. A bank should make loans to individuals who they feel are a good investment.

It's very interesting to note that Chavez is a socialist but he has not nationalized the entire nation as of yet and he more than likely won't because he actually listens to his constituents. I'm not a socialist but I do admire his opposition to U.S. fascism and his boldness on calling out the U.S. on its hypocrisy and obscene corruption. Here they villify him constantly, but that just goes to show how our media in the States is controlled by the govt.

@IntractableJ I said per capita GDP in my comment. The reason for unaffordable healthcare has at least 3 main causes. One, illegal immigrants receive free medical care (no country has as many as the US). Two, the tax code billing health insurance to employers, encouraging the use of health insurance for procedures. Three, regulations making doctors liable for honest mistakes. The fact that the US retains the most advanced medical technology is a testament to the resilience of capitalism.

I would be the first to admit that the US overtaxes its citizens. The US gov regulates interest rates. They regulate big business and pass legislation to make it difficult to run good business. This only proves my point that it is gov involvement not business that has created these problems. There wasn't a free market, it wasn't given a chance. So you cant blame capitalism for this, blame the gov that thinks it knows better. Under socialism there is even more gov intervention.Open your eyes.

Socialized systems bring with them a whole new set of problems like ageism, waiting lists, technological stagnation and are being voluntarily abandoned in western democracies. All Chavez has been accused of officially is that he has a strong following in the Police force and that his relatives have been aspiring to relativly high positions in Venezuela.

" People still don't get it. No you don't mix the two. The two do not mix, they absolutely detract one another."
Well it can depend on the mixed economy. The U.S has alwaysed been a mixed economy that leans towards capitalism. The U.S gov't covers things like public schools, police and fire departments, the military, electricity and road/highway construction which aids capitalism as far as transporting goods.

Of course it was never implemented in the world 100%, but I would have to say neither was capitalism. 100% capitalism would mean no free health care AT ALL, even in emergency cases, no unemployment fee and even no retirement pays if we exagerate a little bit, and 100% communism would mean absolute equality and it can`t be implemented because of the human nature in my opinion, since corruption is an important issue in this case...

As we speak Chavez is being asked to resign by some former supporters. The over regulations that come with socialism aren't good for an economy.

If you didn't understand, the people CAN'T get rid of him in 2013 anymore.
Oh, things won't end well there. And, unfortunately, we'll have to witness this.
The loss of 40% of the seats in the National Assembly means that Chavez has lost much of
    his acclaimed unanimity.
And this change simply reflects what people think NOW.
I want to read what you'll write when the Venezuelan soil be drenched in blood.

@Someideasandstuff I'm looking over some stats and I really fail to see what's so great about Chavez's Venezuela. They have close to 30% inflation. This means that Chavez has instituted a defacto 30% regressive (affecting poor more than rich) consumption tax. Their economy is completely dependent on oil and, due to his "economic war on the burgeoisie owners", people are having trouble getting food. None of this is surprising; food shortages are part and parcel of socialist dictatorships.

Yes, you are right when you say that the Stalinist Warsaw pact countries were not communist, since they hadn't anything communist excepting the economy, but I refered to them this way since the Marxist idea of communism is pretty philosophic, and can`t be really applied. By the way, I red the communist manifesto if that's the text you are referring to.

Yo soy Comunista bolivariano.

40% of Cubans were worse off before the revolution. Most or maybe all economic problems they had was the result of pressure from America
