The power of like-minded association works, everybody wins- including clients. Combining resources and experience continues to push the future of advertising forward- masterminds concentrate that power. Designers tend to under-rate marketing and focus on aesthetics rather than bang-for-the-buck, which is what most advertisers are paying for. Marketers tend to butcher the message if left to their own vices, so I guess this is where we come in? I agree, one mastermind group is not enough for a complete picture of anything. Obviously RUclips helps us stay up to date. Thanks for the video, Philip.
David, Thanks so much I realllllly appreciate your sharing my work with your network - Still trying to grow my audience and your help is super appreciated!
I was looking to join a masterminds group in Bern/Switzerland but can't seem to find any after checking Google/LinkedIn. Does anyone know where to find a more or less comprehensive list of masterminds groups? Or: Do you have any recommendations for guides on how to start ones own group?
Roman, That is a great idea for a video. But just start by doing a weekly Zoom with 3 or 4 other designers you know. I don't know of any comprehensive list of masterminds - as they are usually fairly private affairs - unless they are part of a paid community, like Chris Ducker's Youpreneur.
Bruno, That is a very big question for a very small comments section. The short answer is: it depends. Are you talking about selling through your work to clients - ie. getting them to accept your designs? Or are you talking about getting more clients ie. business development? Or are you taking about your skills just not being in demand ie. no one contacting you?
Philip VanDusen im talking about people contact me. Some times i post my jobs on linkedin, i made some Promo, i contact some personals from companys... In the end of the day very few people buy. Everbody says "u do a beautiful job" but dont buy.
Bruno, It sounds like you are doing a lot the right way. It takes time to build trust and credibility. Have you tried creating content? Are you developing a mailing list? Do you do any direct email promotion or in-bound marketing? You have to focus on GIVING something valuable away that people want - promoting your self isn't enough - people get tired of sales pitches - but they never tire of getting things for free. (content)
I see. It makes perfect sense, I am currently preparing some material to post on linkedin, 1 article per week. I'll see if I explore the emails more, in this area I'm very weak. Thank you for your time and your questions that make me think. Thank you Philip.
I wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge/experience here on your channel. I’ve been a designer for a few years now, and I find myself with an almost incessant compulsion to learn as much as I can, trying to improve. I want to be a successful freelancer some day. (Don’t we all? haha). Currently I’m working in ad production and it isn’t necessarily creatively rewarding, but it has given me a great opportunity to develop my technical skills, learn to balance my workflow, and things like that. Your channel is a nice way to unwind at home, and to continue learning. Thanks!
Generally - my masterminds are done on Zoom.us video conferencing. One I'm in meets in person in NYC - but because of the usual scheduling logistics it happens less frequently which I find less beneficial and kind of a bummer. Video conferencing works great though. One of my masterminds is international with a couple folks from the UK and one from Belgium.
Such terrific info as always, Philip. In the past, two of my mastermind partners hired my agency to do their logos, so it worked out nicely in those instances. So appreciate your videos. Makes Mondays extra special. Best, Bobby
I was thinking about this the other day, and don't know much about mastermind groups; didn't even know they had a name beyond 'agency'. Thank you for sharing, and adding fuel to my long-term goals.
Great! Ask them of they have a friend who could benefit from a mastermind. Then think of one more person you know - then just start! Start with 4 - do a weekly Skype, Zoom or Google Hangout and shoot the sh*t! Share ideas, struggles, best practices. It's totally - and I mean totally addicting. Oh! Also, try not to be the smartest person in the room - try to get people involved who will make you 'up your game'.
Being a designer myself, joining a mastermind community is the best decision I have ever made. So totally agree with all the valid points & benefits you shared! thank you

Jen, Start one of your own! They are the best thing that I've ever done for my career and to jumpstart my learning curve!
I already have a web designer friend lined up whenever I'm ready :D

What I'd love even more than that, is a video of all three...four...of my mentors together 🤓🧠💥
