That's a bargan thuja Tony, you find some great trees in your neck of the woods. Looking forward to the slip pot video so it can stretch those roots a little. 👍
Yeah there seem to be loads of bargains about at the moment. I just filmed a video of a much larger Thuja which I couldn't resist picking up after working on this one.
Hi Tony. Excellent starting material. Thick trunk, healthy and affordable. Thuja is great for bonsai. It can regrow after complete removal of the foliage. There in no problem of die beck after cutting of a part of the branch. It grows very fast for a conifer. Branches are elastic and easy to bend. Tree does not have any serious fungal diseases. In my opinion almost impossible to kill. Species that is perfect for those who would like to join the hobby. Another great video. Peter/Piotr
This is really great news! I've just filmed another video on a much larger Thuja and I really chopped it back on the hope that it would be ok. I'm now much more confident that it will be.
It’s really great what you are doing on your RUclips channel. All these new ideas, experiments, DIY tutorials, non-usual, non-traditionally Japanese or Chines plant species . Watching your is both, entertainment and learning. Peter
You snapped up a great bargain Tony and have made some good early decisions on the future development of this. I enjoyed watching this, whilst sipping my coffee and looking out to sea from my Stronsay retreat. Wildlife and nature walk next for me as I hunt for seals, birds and bonsai rocks :)
That's a nice little tree, specially for the price! You've got some nice curves in the trunk and branches; it will be nice to see how it grows in the coming spring. Best of luck with it! 🙂
Another great video Tony. The problem with waching your videos is that it makes me want to experiment. I've now filled up my little Bonsai bench and need another!
Yes, that was definitely a good option. I think I'm sometimes just a bit too scared of inverse taper. Perhaps I could have gone for the option in the middle by removing two lower branches and leaving the other two lower ones.
Nice start for your little Thuja and when you do come round to the pruning they look really good by shortening branches with scissors and then shaping the foliage by pinching. They are also, as a bonus, inexpensive plants to buy. 👍👍
Hi David. I visit quite a few. I got this one from Dobbies which is normally quite expensive. If you are ever near South Preston, I would highly recommend a visit to Bannister hall farm nursery. I picked up a fantastic mature Thuja for £15 yesterday and they had quite a few.

For that price you can’t go wrong Tony! Yes, get a few more and make a nice forest! Cheers!
Hi Jay. That would have been a great idea, unfortunately, this was a one-off on the discount table.

That's kind of you to say Peter. I think I just enjoy experimenting, and I'm not averse to taking the odd risk either. Especially if I learn from it.
Bonsai phill very good quality tree nice looking trunk love the video thanks Tony
Thanks Phillip. I was surprised how well this one tuned out and I think it could go on to be a cracking tree in the future.

A bit concerned about you hunting seals… 😮😊😊😊
I'm with Jason on the seal hunting mate. You do know that it's frowned upon? ha ha
@@TonysBonsai Just seen this comment. i'm a matural with seals - they mistake me for one of the big ones all the time :)

Love it! You definitely need to get that second bench mate! Think of all the trees you're still missing.
Great taper. The smartest thing you could have done. Keep the lower branches and fatten up that trunck more 👍

Hi Guy. I can't believe I've only just found thuja's. They seem excellent for bonsai for all the reasons you just mentioned.
Nice video Tony, reminds me I need to do something with my Thuja. Tie me kangaroo down, sport. Take care. Love your videos
🤣Cheers mate. I'm new to these thujas, but I really enjoyed working on it. So much so that I went out and bought a big one after shooting this!
@@TonysBonsai You have 2 now. Two little Thuja's 😳

I love thuja
Me too Anders. I've been slow to the party with them but they seem great for bonsai.
👍👌🙂
Thanks Bruce
I haven't tried making a thuja bonsai. I have considered it but the foliage always looked a bit difficult to work with.
Better looking than Nigel one.. Haha
Tony, I have to ask, where us this world's cheapest nursery you pick up bargains from? I'm near Burnley so it's not that far to Preston.
