Kerala's name derives from the Malayalam words Kera (coconut tree) and Alam (land)... The land of coconut trees..... Every part of a coconut tree is used in daily life. Nothing goes waste

Actually, it is just one of the theories for the word's etymology. From Wiki - "The word Kerala is first recorded as Keralaputo ('son of Chera [s]') in a 3rd-century-BCE rock inscription left by the Maurya emperor Ashoka (274-237 BCE), one of his edicts pertaining to welfare.[28] At that time, one of three states in the region was called Cheralam in Classical Tamil: Chera and Kera are variants of the same word.[29] The word Cheral refers to the oldest known dynasty of Kerala kings and is derived from the Old Tamil word for 'lake'.[30] Keralam may stem from the Classical Tamil cherive-alam 'declivity of a hill or a mountain slope'[31] or chera alam 'land of the Cheras'.

This Restaurant is in the Fort area of Mumbai. It is in the centre of the Business district of Mumbai.
This kind of restaurant is very crowded in the afternoon during weekdays. They have the same customers coming back mostly every day for lunch. So the menu of vegetables is changed every day.

Iman is highly observant. 😊 Yes, coconut is a predominant theme in all Kerala cuisines. Also, the banana in different forms is another hero that often has a cameo in most meals.
The food of any region is dominated by what is available in abundance in that region. Coconut is ubiquitous in Kerala and that's why the oil used to cook is coconut oil and even the ingredients and masalas often include coconut in some or the other form. Same with bananas. Fish is also a very standard thing in kerala, again due to the abundance of water bodies everywhere.
Otherwise rice grows in abundance everywhere in south as well as in the eastern parts of India. That's why across the south (any state) you find people to be not only rice eaters but also consume food that use rice and daal in abundance. So dosa, idly, idiyappam, uthappam... You name it and they all have these ingredients.

While much of the dishes are vegetarian, Kerala is one of the few places that one can find pork and beef dishes which are uncommon in most of India. There is also plenty of seafood, lamb, and chicken available as well. Something to accommodate everyone's palate.

I'm from Kerala and what you just saw is our traditional festival spread for our major festival Onam ( Harvest Festival ) minus the fried fish . Every dish is vegetarian and I can promise no two tastes alike . Every one of them has their own taste and ingredients many unique to Kerala . And yes the only common thread running through most of the dishes is the use of either coconut or coconut oil to cook them in. This spread also has a name and its traditionally called a ' Sadya ' .

In Sadhya you will find food of all flavors like sweet, sour, bitter, savory and hot. There is a way to eat each item, the banana chips and banana jaggery chunks are served first so that they can start eating while the other items are been served. You can try different combinations which can be among the gravy and sabji or with different types of chutney, sauce or pickle with small bits of papad. After the first serving of rice they take second serving to end with rasam and buttermilk. You end the meal with payasam and papad. In authentic Kerala cuisine the sweet dishes are different types of payasams some of them having sugar and some with jaggery. In North of India too we have complete meal with all flavors like gravy which some people call salan, different types of sabji's, rotis, parathas and sweet dishes. You can say that traditionally Indian food from any part of India have always been following a very balanced diet even when the concept of balanced diet was not introduced to the world. 😊❤😍

Puli inji is a chutney of tamarind jaggery and ginger and the name literally translates as tamarind ginger . Thoran Olan , Avial , Ezhicherry ,Kalan ,are all vegetable curries with a cocoanut gravy as base with different spices . Rice used in Kerala is boiled unpolished rice which is very healthy . Adapradman is rice kheer with sugar and brown kheer is made of cocoanut milk and jaggery .and this is known as payasam . Mango ginger chutney is made ofa special varietyof ginger known as manga inji and with this the chutney is made along with cocoanut and probably raw mango .A wonderful sadhya spread . land of cocoanut is Kerala .No cocoanut does not help in hair growth on it's own and curry lealf does encourage it .Groun water is hard and it contains iron and hence eateries serve warm jeera pani. The local rice is difficult to eat unless the accompaniments are mixed .Dessert you have the sweet banana chips ,and kheer and payasam .Raw banana is used as a vegetable so as raw jackfruit ie katal . Banana stem is used as a vegetable and so also banana flowerlet .Neem flowers are used to make rasam so also the bark . Each region of South cuisine is distinct and separate . In Kerala you have distinct Malabari Muslim ,Christian, and Hindu cuisine each having distinct flavour .Fish is a staple nonveg fare and beside mutton chicken duck beef and pork are also widely consumed

8 Benefits of eating on a banana leaf:
    1. Natural disinfectant
Banana leaves have natural antimicrobial properties that help to kill harmful bacteria present in food. Eating on a banana leaf can therefore reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.
    2. Nutritional value
Banana leaves contain various essential nutrients like polyphenols, vitamin A, and vitamin C. When food is placed on a banana leaf, some of these nutrients are transferred to the food, enhancing its nutritional value.
    3. Enhances flavor
Eating on a banana leaf can enhance the flavor of food. The leaves impart a subtle, earthy taste that adds to the overall enjoyment of the meal.
    4. Environmentally friendly
Using banana leaves as a natural alternative to disposable plates is an eco-friendly choice. It reduces the need for plastic or foam plates, which contribute to pollution.
    5. Biodegradable
Banana leaves are biodegradable, meaning they break down easily without causing harm to the environment. This makes them a sustainable choice for serving food.
    6. Aesthetically pleasing
Eating on a banana leaf adds a touch of traditional charm to a meal. It can create a visually pleasing experience, making the dining process more enjoyable.
    7. Non-toxic
Unlike some synthetic plates or banana leaf substitutes, banana leaves are non-toxic. They do not release harmful chemicals or toxins into the food, ensuring a safer dining experience.
    8. Boosts digestion
Consuming food on a banana leaf can positively impact digestion. The polyphenols found in banana leaves stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, aiding in better digestion and nutrient absorption.

Dont worry - India is so very large & diverse in language, culture, cuisine, dress, living, climate etc that one has never heard or familiar with names from one end to another esp North East. Myself being in India, I too am absolutely ignorant. So r sailing in d same boat. At least this guy is able to speak in Hindi & explain even if not understandable, but in Kerala & Tamil Nadu (Madras) they speak only Malayalam & Tamil and English, and their alphabets all look like jalebis to a stranger, but differ from each. The food is served on a Banana Leaf & mostly cooked in coconut oil & coconut incl d coconut tree stem as it is abundantly available there. There is a vast difference between d veg & non veg cuisine. Imagine d insides of d poor stomach. Mochibhai on his exit was not walking but rolling out.

Kerala Paratha doesn't go with sadya. It will taste bland.
Paratha can only go with veg curry or non veg curry.
That Paratha is not authentic Kerala Paratha though. Kerala Paratha is very stringly, soft, fluffy. It shud never be brown or crispy flat
