I grew up with a sauna my dad built in our house. I loved it. Any time one of 6 kids were showing signs of a cold, etc. we took a sauna. No colds. Love saunas, hot springs, tubs and I have always closed my daily shower off with cold water rinse. Love it.

Here in the NEK we get our thermal stress regularly. Cook in front of the wood stove -sweat, take the compost out to the compost pile - cold stress ( it snowed last week, the frost date is May 30 ). Go for a walk, snowshoe etc. it is only -20 F. Come in and thaw out by the wood stove….. in the shoulder seasons June and September freeze every morning because the house is cold and we have put the wood cook stove to bed.. just go outside and cook breakfast over a fire… and remember the fire wood heats you multiple times, cutting the trees down, bucking the wood, cutting the wood to 16” lengths, splitting the wood, stacking the wood ( no other heat source). Same goes for food, planting, weeding, harvesting, processing for ferments, canning, dehydrating…. Spreading mulch, cutting the mulch with our scythes. Yup and we are in our 60s, we are in excellent shape, no extra fat on us etc. eat organic because it comes straight from the garden…. I think you get the picture. This is not a snowflake life.

Is there a minimum temperature for the hot tub to gain maximum benefit? I usually set my tub at 101; I'll go to 102 if muscles are knotted up but at 103 I tend to expose my torso before the 20 minute timer shuts off the pumps so core can cool. I have come close to heat stroke twice while working outside in 105*F+ in AZ. Once was so bad I dumped my phone, wallet, and key fob and jumped in our pool to immerse my head.

I assume the science is correct given the research cited. The solution is imprudent. It would be smarter and less costly to cut off the house heat and air conditioning and do no sauna and ice baths rather than pay for heat, air conditioning, sauna, and ice baths since you waste a lot more money paying for all 4 vs paying no money if none are used. If you take cold showers you potentially can save more money and get the shock effect, especially in the winter. All the climate change gurus should love the idea, unless they are only virtue signaling and are not serious about the so called carbon problem. The only caveat is that temperature of the sauna and ice baths are significantly increased and decreased respectively compared to general ambient temperatures, however human body exposure to ambient air winter temps in US states above Florida should be sufficient to mimick the shock effect of ice baths, but I may be wrong. In Florida I use little a/c and physically feel better when I get to sweat a little.
