Actually the falling slash finisher is the weakest for raw motion value, but unlike the other 2 it only hits once and therefore consumes one less point of sharpness. Both the rising and vortex finish hit higher total raw between their 2-hits each in addition to their other qualities.
A quick combo I use for getting to a tackle quickly is ZR+X to do the kick and then you can combo that into a shoulder charge and then a charge attack. At that point you might as well block if it's an emergency but I can see some big brain counter setups with it.
This is my absolute go-to when I just want to get some fast damage in and just maneuver and reposition quickly. Really useful during those times when the target monster just jitters and moves all over the place refusing to take the big hit from the normal GS style.
Something to note about rising slash 3 is that the second hit always hits where the tip of the greatsword ends at, which seems odd, but it can be useful for hitting hard to reach weakpoints or breakable parts like the back of monsters, or if you are out of reach of the head of a toppled monster. I reccomend some way to reduce the need to sharpen if youre using surge slash because it eats up sharpness
Pairing Surge Slash with Adamant Charged Slash/Backslide/Rage Slash, plus the super armor from the last hit of Vortex Slash makes me feel like an untouchable tank. I've never had so much fun with Greatsword than I did now, I hope this combo makes its way into future titles.
Stuff like this is why I adore the combat of monster hunter and near no one talks about. It's not just that it has a lot of mechanical depth to the combos and combat as a whole, it's also about the animation of them; There is proper animation transitions for every attack that they thoughtfully had their mocap guys do in a way that seamlessly flow into any of the possible branching attacks (the same thing applies to the character returning to their idle stance from any of these animations as well). This way you don't get that visual where your character's pose just snaps to the startup frame of whatever attack you inputted, making it look jank. Even Darksouls/eldenring doesn't have this for a lot of it's animations and there is way less going on depth wise for the combat there. And the Great sword is still one of the simpler weapons even with this new combo moveset.
I've found that this works pretty well with part breaker for whatever reason. I can't describe how satisfying it is to uppercut combo (Y/B in vid) to snip tail. The 45deg angle of the last poke is just perfect for those high up tails
Yes, each move has a hidden modifier when used as the 3rd and final move. Y+B gets bonus part breaker on its own, B gets bonus element/status, and Y gets bonus Raw.
This is single-handedly responsible for me finally putting real time into the greatsword. The extra mobility and aggression is a fantastic gateway to let me use the weapon without feeling like I’m wasting 70-80% of my attacks until I get used to it, which was how I felt when I tried to learn it in World.
I love the surge slash. I’ve been a switchaxe main since the weapon came out, but I picked up GS in monster Hunter world and I played through most of the game with different Greatswords, now it’s my secondary when I feel like switch axe ain’t cutting it or simply when I get bored of it. I feel like it’s very insteresting adding combos to a weapon that originally was meant to forgo combos for one giant destructive hit.
I was always fairly uninterested in greatsword due to how its playstyle generally involved either waiting for the monster to stop moving, or otherwise throw out guesses as to where it'll be for your swings, making it a somewhat too...passive to be fun, inbetween those TCS setups. Between surge slash, block tackle, and strongarm stance, 'defensive' playstyle gets plenty of tools to mix it up with aggressive monsters and be rewarded for it, and the new 'aggressive' playstyle lets you take an active part in fighting the monster even as its running around, with backslide even letting you continue your combo at a different angle. Since Sunbreak dropped, playing GS with a mix of malzeno and kushala armor to become a nigh unkillable brawler has been some of the most fun I've had with the series in a long time.
mind dropping your build? I've also never been a fan of GS from any MH game, but this surge combo stuff has got me rethinking that stance. And the aesthetic is bad ass too, Full Gore Magala set + weapon for the dark, edgy fantasy swordsmen vibe is kinda doing it for me.
@@aheahe7943 Malzeno chest/belt and Kushala gloves/greaves are the two important parts, you can shuffle around on helmet and trinket as you see fit, but those four pieces give you 3 points of Blood Rite and 3 points of Kushala Blessing for the broken part lifesteal and hyper-regeneration respectively. Even without the most optimum meta damage skills, most decent greatswords will hit hard enough to refill your health to full in just a few surge slash swings, and the boosted red gauge length with recovery up 3 will let you shrug off big hits in moments even without the lifesteal, and makes blocking attacks feel much less punishing as a result. Toss on Defense up 7 for extra immortality, as well as weakness exploit/partbreaker to go all in on the blood rite synergy, and you'll go entire hunts without hitting the sippy at all.
Even Blood Rite 3 alone is honestly enough to carry Great Sword once you understand your opportunities, the health on hit is absolutely bonkers with those motion values. If you pair it with Stun Resist 3, tanking and punishing with Adamant and Rage Slash just pays for itself most of the time
On top of all the good things that come with Surge Slash combo, I also find that it makes backslide actually useful unlike with the charged slash combo. It even says in the description that it synergizes really well with Surge Slash combo, allowing for a quick evade AND an attack.
The back step is incredibly useful with the charge playstyle. It allows you to dodge/reposition with invunframes, and skip a charge level. When you master strongarm stance, tackle and basktep, you can pull off many, many TCS with style
I need to practice this shit. I've got so bad at GS since GU really. I was OK in World but Rise I'm terrible again. I love how we are forced to learn our favourite weapons again.
Holy shit, those comos and animations look amazing! I actually left the GS and switched to charge blade BECAUSE I wanted a weapon with many different combos and much to learn about. Seems like GS is catching up tho. Great video!
I absolutely love surge slash combo, it's so much fun to play. I combined it with the new counter and it works so well together. At first I also thought shoulder tackle isn't possible with it, that's why I build in the adamant slash for a faster true charge but the counter is so much better and you can shoulder tackle with surge slash, when you block you do a kick and then the tackle. Greatsword has never felt better.
Need to compare the damage from a Lv3 Charge Attack (not Strong Charge or TCS/RS) versus the optimal SSC of overhead 1, overhead 2, and rising 3. As well as the total time to complete each of the SSC and Lv3 Charge Attack w/Focus Lv3. Then do some math to get the DPS of each to properly compare. I'll leave that to actual GS mains though.
When I run surge slash I think it synergizes well with slugger and critical draw. This KINDA turns your GS into a less effective hammer, and given you're going to be constantly be using the first attack in surge slash, it helps your team to keep the monster under control
Seeing how these new skills affect the game makes me wonder if Switch Skills will stick around in some form in the next games. If only for the variety of play styles.
I got a little bored after 100 hrs of CB in World and began to use the GS, I loved it. Now in Rise after use CB for a while (I love CB and Duals in Rise) I tried the GS with the Sunbreak new styles, Oh boy, I'm destroying monsters with that thing, normally I use the new Style and once I stun them rapidly switch to the old one to old bunga bunga massive damage. By the way I also love Duals in Rise, there so much better in Rise than in World. The CB I think I like it more in Iceborne. I've been trying to use other weapons but I cannot find other weapons that can make massive damage like GS's True Charge Slash and CB's SAED, I think GS is great for raw damage, CB for elemental damage and Duals for status damage. With all those Sunbreak styles feels like what MH Generations did, maybe World was a step back compared with Generations in that regard.
I loved the combo GS style in the ICE mod and I was super hyped when I was this style of GS coming for Sunbreak. I'm having a ton of fun with GL atm but this is definitely next.
I generally don't really play GS, but I wanted to try the surge slash combo and thus did my first couple MR hunts with GS. And it's good I did. I was originally unsure how to best get used to switch skill swapping as all of my usual weapons don't really need it on surface level. With GS however, it was easy to figure out a use case and thus use it often and get used to it - surge combo when the monster is very active, switch to charge combo when it's tired, staused or down. In a way, GS was a great teacher for the new feature. Outside of that, I really like it as well. Swinging a big sword quite fast just feels great (it's why I use SA a lot) and the weapon even lets you block and charge. It's a swiss army knife. I really like running status with it (so far, sleep)
i play surge combo, its way more fun IMO. you can easily get into true charged slash too by guard->kick->tackle->strong charged slash->tackle->true charged slash. that... kinda seems like a lot, but i mean, if the monster is down, it doesn't actually take so long lol. plus gives you more chances to use strongarm stance. i typically just rely on the surge combos when they are up or enraged, and aim for true charged slash when they are tired or downed.
I really hope they keep this going forward. I've always wanted to use GS but it's slow, charging play style was never for me so a movement that just removes the charging and let's you do some what slow but quicker non charged attack is just *chefs kiss* definitely gonna play gs in sunbreak on a new character
I personally like B>YB>Y as a bread and butter to lead into charge and rage slash. B is a nice probing attack to confirm the rest will hit thanks to its range, YB sets up the last hit, and I could *swear* this specific combo beefs up the final Y significantly. It seems to be slower in animation by a smidgeon, but heaps more impactful. Excellent for staggering the monster for the charged attacks, or shoulder bash to rage slash!
Watching the combos and wirebug skills for this style of GS. I literally thought out loud, "So you literally become Zack Fair with the breaker mode from Crisis Core Reunion"
I love the new Surge Slash Combo since thats the playstyle i had when i started Monster Hunter back in MH Tri for the Wii (back then i rarely used the charged attacks) I still love this weapon like c'mon its a big heavy sword that can block and deals tons of damage while being satisfying to hit with. Really hope they keep this playstyle in the next titels as well
I like greatsword but managing charges and timing and tackling is a lot. These combos are dope af and I'm definitely using greatsword more now. Game changing
Barely used surge slash throughout Sunbreak, though it does intrigue me a bit. I’ve noticed specific matchups in the game are trickier for GS to maneuver around. Most notable one that comes to mind is Seregios, though personally monsters like Barioth, Blood Orange, Auroracanth and some cases Magmadron and Master Goss have given me personally some issues. Surge slash could be a way for GS to keep up with the faster paced fights in Sunbreak, where committing to Strongarm and positioning might be harder to do so, alongside making element and status GS builds viable choices now. Another noteworthy attribute is with Anomaly quests, Qurio spots generate on limbs that traditional GS gameplay struggles to hit(mainly rear legs on leviathan class and smaller fanged beasts), so surge slash could be good at targeting those spots
Surge shlash is amazing for farming Baggi for Aflicted Pelts. You just sit in him and spam your spin attack and just heal everything he does back to you. Slap a lvl 3 Sleep resistance on and he has not much to interrupt you.
My favorite way of playing with this is full evade window and a bit of evade extender. If you know the monsters attacks well you can dodge through every attack as if you had shoulder tackle and keep aggression up. Add in bladescale for more fun.
What Surge Slash did was finally open the doors for me to play GS. I'm not really good at the game, let alone positioning,Surge Slash changed that. Now i can just simply fulfill my UNGA fantasy of going around with a giant chunk of metal slapping monsters to death with it,also don't have to worry about missing every charged attack and making my hunts take 30 minutes.
I prefer the combo of spamming Hunting Edge literally nonstop because of the reduced cost. Fast charge, hyper mobile, racks up mounting status with aerial attacks, can combo into a TCS if need be.
I first time tried Greatsword because of Surge Slash style, it's really fun. I feel like Capcom is trying to present a more beginner friendly Greatsword playstyle, and yet we can still get the most satisfying moment when we land big charges hit.
I’m trying to learn the gunlance after maining GS and swaxe in base rise but they add stuff like this that’s gonna pull me right back to the GS again ☠️
It synergizes really well with rage slash and not so much true charge slash. The super armor from wide sweep let's you tank hits same as rage slash would, minus the attack buff. Very high risk high reward. Don't be afraid to take those hits! But for God sake get those spiribirds first. You'll need a health bar. Garangolm's set is perfect for this
I play aggressively with the greatsword means I usually eat the monster attacks thru shoulder bash so I confidently jump in front of the monster and fearlessly attack it regardless if it's raged or continuously attacking because the more it attacks the better for my play style. It's like when everyone is running away from the monster when it's attacking but my play style allows me to be right in there confronting the monster while every body is keeping their distance. Feels badass. So Surge style doesn't really fit my play style because I need to find specific scenarios to make a full combo or to avoid being stopped at - if it can only do shoulder bash in the middle of the combo damn that will be so good.
Surge Slash Combo is definitely a lot of fun playing around with and using in situational moments, but it's damage potential vs the traditional charge combo is slightly weaker and not as satisfying using as much as flinching and knocking downs mons with charged slashes imo. I still prefer the old school style for better tanking and dealing stronger hits more consistently but the new gs style is a very welcome addition all the same. Gives it even more variety now and makes it even more of an all round wep than it originally was.
I'm loving Surge Slash. It's been my main hunting style in Sunbreak so far and have the charging on the other scroll if needed. And i'm a Charge Blade Sword and Shield main 😂
man all this stuff feels so great, GenU with Valor and now this is so great, I hate how slow World was in comparion and I can already feel that next Mh gonna be also clunky and slow, not like GenU and Rise

I really like the faster option for greatsword it's very good fun to play around with!
I found that the fastest way to tackle with this build is to Block > Kick > Tackle
It's not as fast, but satisfying as hell when pulled off right 👌🏻
I was always fairly uninterested in greatsword due to how its playstyle generally involved either waiting for the monster to stop moving, or otherwise throw out guesses as to where it'll be for your swings, making it a somewhat too...passive to be fun, inbetween those TCS setups.
@@Morveyn legend, gonna have to try this out when i get home. cheers
The third vortex slash also DRASTICALLY lowers the charge of the charged slash followup. It's pretty great.
all 3 thrid its do this. Its even faster than max focus.
That poor Goss Harag wasn't even the quest target
I need to practice this shit. I've got so bad at GS since GU really. I was OK in World but Rise I'm terrible again. I love how we are forced to learn our favourite weapons again.
Yeah adept greatsword made greatsword god tier levels of invincible 🤣🤣 i wish the adept dodge came back, but people would complain about it being OP
@@RON_FBG so true dude, so true
I wonder how much DPS could be kept while adopting a no charge GS build basically making it fat long sword.
I had no idea great sword got this! Always loved great sword since Freedom 2, definitely gonna try this out soon! Thanks for sharing!
Been using great sword since the first monster hunter seeing this new GS skill feels like a whole new weapon and I’m truly grateful
When I run surge slash I think it synergizes well with slugger and critical draw. This KINDA turns your GS into a less effective hammer, and given you're going to be constantly be using the first attack in surge slash, it helps your team to keep the monster under control
"A less effective hammer" or a hammer that can cut tails, which you should be doing
@@lethargicwizard 😂 true. Though I'm like 75% solo play
Woah! This looks like such a fun greatsword style! As someone who primarily plays DBs im liking this fluid combo attacks.
it reminds me a lot of gen 1 greatsword where you couldn't charge, it's incredibly fun!
Ah... Good ol' times. When the right analog stick is the big deal.
i play surge combo, its way more fun IMO. you can easily get into true charged slash too by guard->kick->tackle->strong charged slash->tackle->true charged slash. that... kinda seems like a lot, but i mean, if the monster is down, it doesn't actually take so long lol. plus gives you more chances to use strongarm stance. i typically just rely on the surge combos when they are up or enraged, and aim for true charged slash when they are tired or downed.
I really hope they keep this going forward. I've always wanted to use GS but it's slow, charging play style was never for me so a movement that just removes the charging and let's you do some what slow but quicker non charged attack is just *chefs kiss* definitely gonna play gs in sunbreak on a new character
It doesn't even really get rid of the charge mechanic, just makes them not the focus of play.
@@jasonkeith2832 yeah I know you get a fast charge at the end of the combo and it's perfect by my standards
I'm loving the heck out if this style. Fast swings for 200~1k dmg is just silly
Omgosh I immediately replaced Charged Slashes with Surge Slash right when I started Sunbreak. Freakin love it!
Had no idea what surge slash did I have to try this now. thanks!
Watching the combos and wirebug skills for this style of GS. I literally thought out loud, "So you literally become Zack Fair with the breaker mode from Crisis Core Reunion"
As a GreatSword main, Rise is the most fun i had with this weapon, hope they keep it that way for the next games.
Nice choice of music, DnB is a big vibe.
I love the new Surge Slash Combo since thats the playstyle i had when i started Monster Hunter back in MH Tri for the Wii (back then i rarely used the charged attacks)
I still love this weapon like c'mon its a big heavy sword that can block and deals tons of damage while being satisfying to hit with.
Really hope they keep this playstyle in the next titels as well
Being faster and a little more mobile has been so refreshing. I absolutely love the combo and dont think I can go back tbh.
all of those combo looks so cool!
I was having Rajang troubles yesterday so I tried surge slash. My God. Should’ve messed with it sooner. Very happy with the move set.
Really enjoying the surge slash combo. Takes me back to when you couldn't even charge with the greatsword in 1 lol
BTW, the third Wide Slash apply double the element/status per hit, so it's pretty much 4x in a single input.
My favorite way of playing with this is full evade window and a bit of evade extender. If you know the monsters attacks well you can dodge through every attack as if you had shoulder tackle and keep aggression up. Add in bladescale for more fun.
Even Bladescale Hone Lv1 is enough to not require much sharpening when paired with evade window, additional points just remove the need entirely.
If you wanna loop the surge slash combo you can combo after a strong charge slash with a level 2 surge Y+B.
I first time tried Greatsword because of Surge Slash style, it's really fun.
I feel like Capcom is trying to present a more beginner friendly Greatsword playstyle,
and yet we can still get the most satisfying moment when we land big charges hit.
its a shame you cant use it till mr, cause I'd love to start off a new character dedicated solely to gs with this!
Kamura hunters are wild, swinging a greatsword like this.
I’m trying to learn the gunlance after maining GS and swaxe in base rise but they add stuff like this that’s gonna pull me right back to the GS again ☠️
Would be really cool to see a build and Switch Skill Set dedicated to this kinda playstyle
I am actually thinking about making a GS main because of this buff. I didn't get into it in world but this seems real nice.
Wow gs seems like a whole new wpn. Thats nuts. Iceborn health augment days are over but gs is still well...great.
I went through the story with Surge for the most part it was a lot of fun for sure!
Garangolm's set is perfect for this
The Y->B->-YB combo kind of reminds me of the dark knight combo from FFXIV. Neat.
Punishing Draw and Slugger are your best friend with the surge slash combo. K.O.s come so fast
finally a video about the SSC!
I'm loving Surge Slash. It's been my main hunting style in Sunbreak so far and have the charging on the other scroll if needed. And i'm a Charge Blade Sword and Shield main 😂
I wish you can transition into a charge slash from any of those combos it would be even sicker
Surge slash gs imo is basically the 15th weapon choice now bc of how fundamentally different it is from charge combo
Made a stun setup using punishing draw and slugger, combined with the second hit of vortex, makes it not half bad at KO
I am still sold. I feel like Guts from Berserk. I wear the Gore Magala layered armor. It is so cool.
hope this trend continues to other weapons like charge blade and dual blades, would like different movesets for all weapons eventually
I run an elemental surge gs build. Using a shagaru weapon against the final boss shreds it.
Surge Slash turns Greatsword into Hurk from Vindictus and I love it.
Surge slash made greatsword my main and I honestly wish they'd make it the new combo for greatsword in all the other games
Funnily enough having never touched GS before I actually found surge slash to be more to my taste and easy to pick up compared to normal GS
What is the music in the video background though, love it!
Surge slash actually makes greatsword look fun! I’ve always hated the slow stand still and charge playstyle
man all this stuff feels so great, GenU with Valor and now this is so great, I hate how slow World was in comparion and I can already feel that next Mh gonna be also clunky and slow, not like GenU and Rise
does GS benefit most from switch skill swap? It seems to unlock radically different playstyles that are very useful to switch around mid fight
Yea I personally use surge slash/rage slash for mobile phases and traditional charge/tcs for downed/sleep
awe positive vibe to the video!
the surge slash combo made me learn and play the greatsword to begin with
I swear the YB end attack has extra part break power
What layered armor is being used in your build? I really like the look of it
I didn't like the changes world did to GS playstyle so I was forced to stop playing one of my favorite weapons , now I'm back to using a giant slap of bone/metal with this new way using the GS , I use a elemental build with dereliction and it feels awesome
1:16 new thing i learned YOU CAN CUT THE WEB?!?
Might actually pick up GS once I get Sunbreak.
