This Chevy big block has been on Nick's dyno once before.. but that was before it was involved in a wreck that totalled the car it was powering. Now it is back for a once-over ... and while it is in the shop, Nick wants to show everyone what is entailed in strapping one of these beasts to the dyno for testing.

Good morning Nick, I always look forward to Monday morning, a cup of hot coffee, and Nick's garage.
Morning sir! Hopefully there will be lots of yellow in the upcoming instalments.
Nice to see you onboard Eugene, as usual! As Nick says...SOON things will be yellow!
@@deucerider430 Hey Deuce, I'm just as excited as everyone else is to see some yellow in Nick's shop very soon.
I thought this Big Block Chev RO let was going to be part 2 of the "600 HP" one that only made 300 HP...

Dr. Nick, I often wondered how a engine was put on your dyno stand, now I know, thanks, cheers.
You bet!
@@NicksGarage so I imagine my 1966 tall deck 366 would be comparable. Fr a 66 C80 fire truck. 11,000 miles. Gear driven cam. Not sure if I should change cam. Looking for huge torque. Hoping for 450lb plus. What ya think Nick? Thank you brother. God Bless ya
I like that spay bottle trick , my Pops showed me that trick when I was younger he was a WWII P51 pilot and that was one way the checked the cylinder temp . Very cool trick !!!
You know, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a step by step on setting up an
engine on a dyno - like, ever (and I'm old, like almost Nick-old :-) ).
Now that I've seen it, there's nothing in it that is unexpected - it was just VERY cool
of George and Nick to think of presenting the whole thing!
Thanks much guys, I enjoyed this one very much!

All credit to Nick for this idea. 👍
Good morning Nick thank you very much for the video on what it takes to set up an engine on dyno .
I love watching Nick's garage!!! It feels like a family affair, with Nick teaching his employees the right way to do things. Thanks Nick for a great channel!
I never really understood these until I drove a peanut port 496. That was a hard working motor.
Sweet 50min of Nicks garage to kick off my week!
Love how y'all have all the best sort of TV show feel, with none of the usual cheesy stuff YT is better about.
Wow, thanks. Glad you enjoy it!
Well, I don't know, but at 417 horses he's already totalled out one car, with a supercharger and more power he may not survive the next crash.
To be fair, we don't know the circumstances around the guys' car accident. Most cars, trucks, suv's etc, have more than 417 hp nowadays.
Looked like almost 500 FT Lbs Tq.
Fast cars will get away from ya and they can kill ya. Thier fun tho

dont be scared
Just recently found your channel and it is great. I am an Chevy truck guy and was glad to see a 427 truck motor on the Dyno. Friend put on in his 86 3/4ton 4x4 on 40 inch tires and what a beast it was. He bought it brand new and blew the 350 in a year. I always wondered what the power out put was. You make great videos of old school power in detail, not into all the flashy shows out today.
Welcome aboard!
Nick, love watching your videos and in your shop keeping the Ol Muscle Cars alive !!!!! Great job Nick !!!
this was great, always wanted to see the whole enchilada ,start to finish!!
Hi Nick l like the passion your have, showing us all the great amount of work involved putting an engine on the dyno. All of us viewers luv your channel. Keep up the good work from John in Melbourne Australia 😃👍
Thanks 👍
Nick uses two words I taught my kids and grandkids to always use..please and thank you ..👍
I really love that old school intake manifold. Been many a year since I saw one of those.
Morning Nick. No wonder your hair is turning grey...lol. What a way to start the week. Great video to watch with the Monday morning Coffee.. Have a great week.
This was excellent Nick, showing the process of installing an engine on the dyno to make it work.
Also working with Leo a young man wanting to learn the trade awesome!
Im a mechanic from Philippines... i hope i can work an engine like that someday. :D
Nice! Keep the engines going. Thanks for watching in the Philippines.
Awesome editorial work George! Between the camera work, editing and music score, you should be nominated for an award! Thanks again Nick and crew! Incredible as always guys! Let me guess, I bet the dips tick tube is missing too, lol!
I've lived all over the US ( thank you momma) and a man like this was in every neiborhood I lived in..one that made the most difference in my life was Larry Singleton ..from Durant oklahoma..he died several years ago now from a rare form of cancer. I believe he was exposed to asbestos particles while removing the asbestos from a hospital in our town, renovating it into a middle school..ive got an old modle boat he made by hand..im sure Nick is just like all the men I have been blessed to know..thank u Nick.
Nick working on Chevys was fun when I was younger. Watching your videos sure brings back memories. I think back at my dads gas station and realized I did him no favors working on my 55 Chevy, so many motors and transmissions. Thank you for this video.
My ex brother in law purchased a 1990 Chevy 454SS pickup in 1995 for a song. It had been in a wreck and we tore it apart, right down to the frame. Rebuilding a 5 year old truck was pretty simple. Parts were readily available and Edelbrock had come out with some great parts for the 454. He replaced the 3 speed TH400 with a Rock crusher 4 speed. The 3.73 rear gears still worked great, but he put in an air locker anyway. He never got a chance to put it on a Dino, but everyone guessed at Rear wheel hp around 400 (and that was without the 150hp nitrous shot).
Great, fun and addictive truck for smoking up the rear tires.
Thanks for another great video post. Keep up the great work and best of luck 🍀
Yesterday I attended some drag races at Miramichi Park here in New Brunswick and I had to put my fingers in my ears a few times because some of the cars were very loud. I can`t imagine how loud it gets in the small confined space!!
No plugs, no dizzy, no hold down, wires, no parts, no joke. I'd be charging extra for the hastle. That's rediculous what the Gary's did to that motor. They think 427's grow on trees? I'd be mortally ashamed to have taken that motor to someone other than for a full teardown and build right, which is what they should have done the first time. Surprised the valves survived with those pistons out 180°. Kudos to Nick for not saying all the negative comments that you gotta know were on his mind.
That water test to find the misfiring cylinder(s) is GENIUS. I thought I knew everything
As I am sure Nick would tell you ... it's Old Skool at its best! I was doing that myself over 50 years ago! Looooong before you could even buy a "push and point" thermometer!
Crayons work good I was taught to use crayons when I was in diapers ,😂😂
In my neighborhood was a backyard shop two doors up from my house. As a little boy I used to lie under cars watching my friend work on cars and hot rods. At age 16, I built my first engine. A 221 Ford V-8 for a Fairlane I owned. Learned from watching.
As always, thanks Nick for your time and years of experience! Another fine video that displays true professionalism👍👍👍👍👍🌟
Probably the most knowledgeable mopar mechanic on the planet
Thanks for that! Very kind.
Nick and rick ehrenberg of Mopar action magazine .
Good morning Nick and crew. Really interesting demonstrating the time involved in the task. One week closer to vacation Nick!
Right on!
Love the music George great work as always Nick is a poetry in motion as he proves putting a motor on the dyno is not easy especially without all the parts.
Unfortunately motors don't come with zippers.. or elastic bands like your drawers.. you can't just slip them on and off. Gary should have hosed it off before he ever brought it to you. IT'S a good Monday when Nick has been hard at it. and i can sit and drink my coffee with the roar of somebody's big block burning some hydro carbons. ahh life is good.
Damage in muddy bed of pick-up
Awesome....love chevy big blocks! 417hp thats great for low compression.
Mines made 561 on low compression
It's like watching a surgeon with his patient paging Dr. Nick you're need in E.R

Thank you for your time Nick and the video ! 😎
Antique heads. One of Nick’s all-time best lines. Ha ha
good morning! Nick and team grandson and i enjoying your show again this week great show thanks keep safe
Good morning! Great to hear you are watching with the family. ❤️
For points type distributor, line #1 on TDC (compression), drop the distributor in then:
Rotate distributor (in the direction of rotation) until you pass over the lobe FOR #1, then go against rotation, until the points barely open. You’ll be within 3 or 4 degrees of correct timing
Good morning from Texas. I enjoy my morning coffee and see what Nick has on the dyno. Thumbs up.
Excellent video Nick. A lot of steps. Made me stop and think how much time goes into setting up any engine to test.
Hi Nick Thanks for the video.Good HP for a low compression motor. I just bought my 1st 454 after watching some of your BBC dynos. Rode in some BBC chevys back in the days that would pull the front wheels. Have a good week!
Nick im 71 years old my dad had his own auto marine repair shop i started working summers and weekends at 11 years old at 17 summer of 1968 I built a 57 chevy 301 from a 283 4 speed 4:10 rear it made a lot of noise and was the first of many I built under my dad's supervision the last one built in his shop was a 1965 chevell 4 speed lT1 350 you remind me of him 👍 your patience and the way you treat people anyway I look forward to your podcasts I grew up in ocean county NJ best wishes 😀
Big blocks never disappoint, even low performance builds make more power than they have any right to.
yeah, bbc's
Especially great for the street. Gotta love that torque they produce! Sometimes I wished I'd went big block back in the day.
Great way to start the week ! Watching the master at work
Thanks Squirrel!
It's just a nother part of motor building It's takes time to do it thank you for showing us!
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to help us out
Good morning to all at Nick's Garage! Have a great week! Bill from Linglestown Pennsylvania
Thanks, you too!
Great videos keep em coming. I bought a 69 gto in 1989 paid 1600 u.s. dollars still own her. She got a 428 1050 3barrel.
I seem to be addicted to your channel Nick
I watched the episode where you're testing the Yenko Camaro and now I'm watching this one
And I can't tell you how much I have learned even though I'm a 73-year-old gearhead
Did not know there was such a thing as a holley 3 barrel and I read up on it and read it they existed but they're very rare
And here I learn a common sense and simple way of testing whether a cylinder is dead or not.
You should call yourself the professor of motors!
Monday mornings are the best with nicks garage!
The young man really appreciates the opportunity he has been afforded
What a privilege to learn from the master! Love your channel Nick!
I enjoyed every minute of the installation . Learn not to complain about the price of having one done, lot of work. Haha
Right on!
@@NicksGarage And how many times have you heard " just throw it on the Dyno" over the years? Ot another phase "toss in this other cam"? lol

Great, informative episode. I was waiting for you to check the oil and you did!
Always check the oil level. In many cases you do not see it on video.
Superb demonstration of how the pros do it, thanks for sharing!
Good video Nick. It was interesting to se the process for this.
Mr Nick, I love the diamond plate steel you have on the wall to protect the drywall, I j Just gotta say "What a great idea !
Nick is on the clock he's working on the Chevy big block Owned by Gary Jr and Gary senior Nick is installing it on the dynamometer The bell housing must be correct Nick has it checked in a dyno room like this it's easy to inspect If your engine is suffering from low compression taking it to Nick's Garage would be my suggestion they'll fix your V8 woes without question No matter what the date Nick and the boys will work on your V8 Shout out from London Big ups Nick and the team!
Big up, Roberto!
Very nice process .. I also have a abundance of odd and end parts for that type of job. I have a simple run in stand not a dyno but takes a little while to set up. Good job my friend!!! Thank you and youtube for the opportunity to watch you do your magic !!! Kelly from Memphis..
When it comes to chevys, headers are not a problem.
For Mopar K-frame subframe deals I can understand his disdain, but on my buddies 80s K25 they basically fell in
It's quite the feat to get all the procedures to put an engine on a Dyno. Great video thank you for your time and understanding.✌️🆒☝️💪💪😆🎯😊
Decent power all things considered
The owner doesn't realize the time money meter is running as you have to work on his engine. Lol.
you would think that he will have to pay for it!
That's why you charge him labor rates
@@robertkohen3994 You miss the cost of the machine. Sitting there doing nothing, it still costs money (fixed costs). Running, it costs money (variable costs). And that's before human labor.
Bon Matin/ Good Morning. Coffee and a Chev big block, great way to start my day.
Enjoy!
If you don't love Nick well go somewhere else. I rarely post but I just have to. He doesn't love what he does, it's a passion! We are a dying breed Mr. Nick and I. Just love watching his enthusiastic workmanship!
The screen splitting Really thru me back in my seat,Kool,Well Done
You know Nick, I'd always put the timing Mark up to TDC and check the exaust valve is closed on number 1 before I put the header'/manifolds installed 🤞
Time is money... 3 hours with added help from an experienced tech. 👍
Drop Dizzy in regardless of where it engages oil pump drive, turn Dizzy until desired plug terminal is pointing where you want it remove cap, turn engine to line up rotor, then mark and remove dizzy. Rotate engine to #1 TDC, reinstall Dizzy to mark and lock down.
Good video again! Wish I had someone like you local to learn this. I don’t think there’s anyone here with an engine dyno. Just at the wheel dyno. I’m building a 454 now very similar to the brothers 454
Love watching you work Nick! You're still crisp as a brand-new dollar bill. More power to ya - pedal down brother!
I have only watched a bunch of mopar shows you nick loved all of them 62 year mopar guy 72 d200 has a 400 small and.i am lacombe alta and i love your show keep up the good work NIck.
Nick, your videos, content, production team, shop is ALWAYS top notch! Thanks
Glad you think so!
Diagnosed the bad wires on my truck that way, set spray bottle to misting, sprayed my wires, they were old, dried out and arcing everywhere once i misted
Nick, mount a screen facing the Engine room, in top left corner of window(from inside control room perspective), IN the control room, you don't want too far from glass, glare could be a factor, I know you stated once you tried to mount a monitor in the engine room and the vibration killed it.
1-8-4-34-6-5-7-2 I have that one memorized from years ago.
Yes the wiring is wrong
To clarify, cranking pressure means little in relation to compression ratio. It has much more to do with cam timing and overlap. For example a 14 to 1 compression ratio engine can be mechanically perfect and still have 120 PSI cranking pressure if it has a very aggressive camshaft.
To be nick’s apprentice is an honor
Great for all the old school motor guys.
Great episode. I give gm credit for starter mounting bolts vs mopar or ford. Them headers are a lot easier on the Dyno 😂
Chevy starter mounting isn’t something to admire. You never have to shim Ford or Mopar starters to keep from tearing up the ring gear, they just work. Nothing sounds worse than an imcorrectly shimmed Chevrolet starter.
@@stevelacker358 at least the bolts are easy to get to ..
nice work nice ...lots of time to install on the dyno.....
Just put up a mirror. It might be a lot less expensive to see the dyno monitor. Thanks again Nick!
Good idea!
@@NicksGarage What happened to the readout screen you used to have IN the Dyno Room on the wall?
This is a good reminder, you forget how much work goes into prepping for a test. We "armchair warriors" always get to simply ENJOY the gravy part the actual test. LOL Thanks Nick. So sorry to here of the cars demise, especially a muscle car - Bummer.
I love watching this show,I wish I could do all the things you do .
You could put a mirror on the wall where you mentioned putting another screen. Reflect the screen on the desk. Reflection will be backward but I’m guessing you’d deal with that just fine. Save a few $$$.
Very interesting. I’d want you as my boss. Positive attitude goes a long way with employees. 🤙
Great idea
Even my wife learns from Nick: today she asked if the cylinder was not hot because the piston is not firing. Let's open up a few Chevy big blocks. Let the special features begin!
Love that you’re watching together! Thanks.
impressive for low cylinder pressure...Those old GM BIG BLOCKS ARE NO JOKE
As always another beautiful Monday morning! Hello everyone!
Hello there!
Good work Nick 5:06 would like to see you rebuild 427
Truck motor. The Spacer needed to use Intake designed for the Car block is clearly visible. Edelbrock Torker, cool looking intake
Awesome! I think I like step 11 best, been there done that many times! Cheers
Awesome show those headlights are cool keep them coming and see you Monday
Hey Nick love your you tube, I was looking at the tear down on the 67 440 that was nice, had a 440 TNT in a 1969 new yorker, the car had about 1000 miles in 2014 when I sold it, great engine
A tall deck 427 at 5100 rpm is kinda scary they had heavy 3 ring pistons in them and a 8:1 compression ratio stock rated at 230 horsepower stock. It's neat to see one doing those numbers I just want to build mine to get maximum fuel economy 🤣
I love the old Edelbrock Tarantula intake manifold. that is old school cool. the modern black valve cover and trick carb look out of place next to it. It needs an pair or Micky Thompson M/T finned covers with some old school Offenhauser breathers and an old 3310 Holley to look 60-mid 70s period correct. i would be interested in the air/fuel ratio on this thing, its missing some bolts that hold the intake to the block and it has those space plates to mount a regular intake on a Tall deck BBC truck block. that twice the possible air leaks with missing bolts on the intake. awesome video. I remember the this thing for the original video... i think i said put a turbo or super charger on it and make some real power. i love the power and efficiency that LS and LT motors have, but they ugly engines and the only way to make the look nice it to put a cover over them. a big block is a thing of beauty under the hood. the only thing that looks cooler is a old flat head ford or Chevy Mark I big block W head 409 motor or a first or second gen Hemi.
I would have cleaned up that block even if it meant a trip to the car wash BEFORE even starting any disassemble anything to avoid getting dirt into the engine. Then asking to dyno an engine missing so many parts? I knew an old boy who could probably build a BB Chevy blind folded. He usually ran his car at 3400ft and raced on a strip at 2400ft. His biggest problem was breaking out of his bracket.
It almost looks like George just stuck the go pro in front of Nick's face while he's wrenching on the 454😂..... That'd be kinda funny if Nick was like - "Yo George, Bro what are do u think you're doing"? 🤣 👍...
No but honestly good action shots George 😎....
