Big Boy 4014 Steam Train: Return To Steam!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 сен 2024
- Union Pacific steam locomotive number 4014 is considered to be one of the largest locomotives ever built. It was one of 25 “Big Boy” locomotives but for the Union Pacific Railroad between 1941 and 1944 by the American Locomotive Company. In 2013, the Union Pacific made a deal with the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona, California to reacquire locomotive 4014 and restore it to operation as part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 2019. Come along as wee see the first test run of locomotive 4014 as well as its first excursion to Ogden, Utah and return. All aboard!

Imagine being the guy to tug on that whistle for the first time since it's restoration, couldn't imagine how much of a rush that would give you.
I know right!!
Must've felt exhilarating.
You'd never forget the feel or sound!! 😎
Well from times when big boys on display I’m pretty sure people will get to go into the cab to blow that whistle just like it was for 3985

a little love for the 844 too. she is gorgeous and fast.
While the 4014 Big Boy is the star here for now, UP has not forgotten the 844 by calling it the "Living Legend". I am awestruck that a transportation company would put so much effort into showcasing America's greatness!
I don’t call trains “she” it sounds weird
Big Boy 4014 3:SP 4449 Daylight!
true dat
czwij I’m like big boy 844 was built for speed
In 1959, on a trip out west, I convinced my family (12 yr old sister) and my cousin’s family (10 and 12 yr old sisters) to stop at the UP Cheyenne yard to see the majority of the Big Boys and Challengers gathered prior to scraping. My dad, who had worked for Southern Coal Co., and I were big RR nuts. The girls complained all the way from Tennessee that it would be “boring”, but… to this day they still talk about the experience. The yard manager allowed us to wander among the giants for hours, climbing in the cabs, advancing the throttle, puling the brakes and horns. I don’t recall the count but believe there were 10 or so Big Boys and a few Challengers. At the time I could have bought a bell from one of them for $75. I had the money from cutting yards but couldn’t part with it. Biggest mistake of my life! Now I’ve got to see one running.
$75 in 1959 is a good chunk of money!
790$ in today money I cannot blame you for not spending what seemed like a waste of a very decent chunk of change in a time where such things were more commonplace. (Steam locos) hard to guess what things are like 1 year let alone dozens.
Just gotta love the sound of a true steam whistle.
Way better than the diesel engine
Angry as hell. Definitely intimidating.
I remember that sound as a child in the mid fifties.........it still gives me goose bumps.....!!!
I’m so proud of this community
I also appreciate how hard Union Pacific is working to preserve its heritage by bringing this giant iron horse back into service.
Not me. They furloughed many good diesel techs that actually fixed useful machines.
They also abandoned their only 4-6-6-4 Challenger. It's not much of a "Heritage Fleet".
@@krakenwoodfloorservicemcma5975 I'm glad the Class 1's can't find any employees. Call some of their furloughed ones.
Imagine driving down the highway the morning big boy was out and seeing that massive thing by accident. I love how powerful the steam plumes are.
Indeed. It'd be even cooler for someone who didn't know they were restoring it.
Oh my heart , the tears are flowing. What a joy to see this magnificent engine working.
All of us who regret not being able to travel to see Big Boy's rebirth thank you for sharing this top-notch video -- bravo!

This is truly amazing that UP “Big Boy” is in operation again after over 60 years. When I first learned about the locomotive, I was amazed. Great video btw.
So it was out of service for 60 years and now its being in action after 60 years
If my dad were still alive today, he'd absolutely adore this video. He loved steam locomotives, giving a bit of that love to me.
This was one of the best days of my life; the Big Boy, the engine I had loved my entire life, began its first excursion on the day of my birth. I wasnt able to see it, but I was so overjoyed, that I couldnt sit still the entire day.
Thank goodness people out there had the foresight to preserve these pieces of not only railroad history, but American history. Generations will now be able to enjoy this sight.
I got to see this monster in Ogden, first when it was celebrating on the day before it left then the next morning I went to Riverdale where I watched it leave. It was going about 30-40 mph and was the coolest thing I've gotten to see in a while. Both engines 4014 and 844 both shook the ground as they passed, then whistled after they passed us. Wish to see it again if it comes during it's summer trip
Your right this thing is a giant monster on the rails imagine if every country has a big engine like this
It may not interest anyone, but the Diesel that accompanies all current excursions run by the Union Pacific is mandated by company policy. Union Pacific utilizes PTC (Positive Train Control) which is also required by the government on all 1st Class Railroads (at a minimum) on their rail lines and due to the different era the 4014, 844, and 3985 were built in, they will likely never be permitted to lead a train solely by themselves (as they lack PTC). The modern infrastructure of most railroads also prohibits the successful return because of the lack of necessary items such as water and oil along the lines. It would be extremely costly to bring these locomotives back into freight service which is extremely unfortunate. It would be amazing to see these magnificent locomotives return but it is extremely unlikely that this will be seen anytime in the near future.
Back on the 70's we had a great uncle who lived with us until his passing..He was born in 1901, he had this HUGE dip in the top of his head, said he got it when he was 4 because he fell asleep along the tracks and the caboose step clipped him..His family was surprised he survived..BUT he would put his hands to his mouth and blow in such a way saying that's what a steam train sounded like..We thought it was cool back then. YEARS later one rolled through the town I lived in..When that whistle went all it did was bring back memories..He had hit it PERFECTLY..
Today Nov 16 2019 my dad and I witnessed this magnificent steam engine in Nowata Oklahoma. And it was an absolute joy of a time. Getting to spend the 30 minutes of my life with this thing in near arms reach (but did not touch because it was HOT!) was amazing, gratifying, and just all around worth the time to stand around and wait for it to stop in and show off it's majestic self. I loved it.
I was in Nowata when he arrived (I waited 3 hours). Worth every minute!
Idk why I watched a 40 min video about an American train, yet im not disappointed. Greetings from Norway

You're a railfan?
@@erical6338 I guess lol
Hopfully when 3985 restoration is done 844 3985 and 4014 to run a triple header
Now that would be something to see!
Another Steamer is being rebuilt?? That is great information. Up here in the thumb I believe we only have one and it is on a small excursion track. Those big puffers really put on a show!!
Oh baby, a triple 🤦♂️
Garrett Henderson sadly I talked to Ed Dickens and he told me that there is no hope to restore 3985 :(
WestCoastTrainAction your lies are not convincing I talked to Ed on the day when 4014 backed out of the shops under its own power for the first time Ed said 3985 will operate again by 2020-2021
I get chills hearing and seeing that train. That’s American power right there a true work horse.
One of my teachers has a relative who works for the Union Pacific railroad. His brother gave me a Union Pacific 2020 calendar for Christmas. It was the best gift a railfan could ever have. The calendar even has 4014 and 844 during the excursion.
i would love a calendar with the big boy in it
I think it's fantastic that Union Pacific has restored some of these amazing machines. I just got to see Big Boy go through my town today. It was a major event, hundreds and hundreds of people came out to see it and I got to spend a really nice day with my dad doing some train watching.
A HUGE thanks to UP, who made considerable resources available for this project. As a shareholder, I'm thrilled to see some money going into history, rather than already-rich people's pockets!
You cannot fault how gorgeous they are.... Thankyou for the hard work on the video mate. Cheers from Australia.
We are great for making big things, big steam locomotives, and big people here, nothing to be proud of, but
@@LDaniel_BDuce lots to be proud of what u on ab
@@LDaniel_BDuce My father is a very well travelled man, he said America has the best and worst to offer.... This is definitely Americas best.... The Mechanical Rythym, the sounds, the smells the sights... It stimulates all senses to blokes who enjoy heavy machinary and mans ability to engineer the heavy movers that keep our economies afloat and built them (and continue to build them) I drive trucks and still smile seeing an old choofer rolling down a line.
Magnificent! Hat's off to every single person at UPRC responsible for bringing 4014 back into service. Steam locomotives....people love them. Why did they ever take them away? Beautiful steam engineering in motion. Cannot be matched. I know....my grandfathers and uncles almost all steam locomotive engine men.

ALFA X is the fastest bullet train to come out of Japan
I remember when they announced that the UP Steam Shop was going to restore 4014, I was shocked that such a massive restoration of a 4-8-8-4 would be attempted. It's great that people, and Union Pacific, are willing to invest in historical preservation of these extraordinary machines. Things, like 4014, provide tangible links in the historical record of mechanical engineering and material sciences, that are important to maintain because they're part of a broader continuum. 4014 isn't just some obsolete relic, it's now a living and working example of applied science that illustrates the progression of technologies that succeeded the steam locomotive.
But beyond all that, it's beautiful machine that wears its intricate mechanicals for all to see; it's representative of the pinnacle of pure mechanical engineering. Romanticism about steam locomotives didn't start with their passing, people were awed by these beasts almost from the moment they appeared. The raw physics of how the steam locomotives work, the danger and adventure that they represent, those things are real; and the bigger they are, the more they are operating at the very limits of the possible.
When fired and operating, these machines are living, breathing beasts; they heave, hiss, sweat and shudder, and if toyed with, they can kill. These machines are more than just the sum of their parts, the function of their design, or the history they represent; they're worth preserving because they are absolutely magnificent.
All hail the legend of the rails! If the rumors are true, 3985 is next in line for restoration.
They are! UP announced in 2015 that once 4014 is restored, 3985 will finally be rebuilt.
The "rumours" are actually credible facts uttered by the Union Pacific
i dont think it will be restored, as 2 steamers is enough for the heritage fleet
@@union_4014 restore them all! Steam Engines are an experience in of themselves!
@@railfanjackson4531 Well that was a complete lie, they are retiring it from service (Source: a UP Steam Club article), and putting it on static display somewhere. It is because 1, it would require a 4014 style frame rebuild, 2, Financial cutbacks on each department, and 3, UP believes that 2 are sufficient for now.
I liked the narrative, specially in the minute 7:13 when he says" thousands of people by the tracks to witness this historic occasion" and there were three guys and a pick-up truck watching it pass by
willy - I saw that. I'm sure most spectators were in towns. But that is some seriously open country.
Pretty sure he meant throughout the whole excursion. Lol
Incredible video Mike!! Its absolutely beautiful that #4014 gets to see her home road, and fight the grades of Sherman Hill after nearly 60 years!! The 4000s were indeed a marvel of their time, and powerful enought to pull a 5 1/2 mile long freight on level rails at 10mph!!
Mike is my friend name too lol
2:35 - Diesel Engine 4014 pulling the 4014 Big Boy... Great choice there, UP! - I love the sound of this masterpiece. Thank you to all of the UP steam team for the save of this historical beast.
Its just a work of art , as a child in Australia I loved to watch the steam trains run past my school at Wallerawang NSW , regards and respect to all from Australia.
I am happy to say I was part of the crowd. Scoped out various sites in Echo and Weber Canyon before the event. Weather turned blah so I walked from my home in Midvale and took Trax to Frontrunner. End of the line was Ogden Station with 844 & 4014 parked nose to nose. What a beautiful sight to see these trains together. Got to say 844 is my favorite.
Union Pacific: one of the few great companies in the world.
Oh yeah, they are the best. Very stable job.
This is totally awesome. I was 13 days old when she worked her last day. Yes, our Southern California climate takes very little toll on vehicles, as we have limited rain. And no snow. Except for our mountain community's. My 68 mustang and 58 cadillac, are rust free. I would love to get up close to this monster machine someday. Thanks for the great video!!
that's amazing, my dad has/had a model of a big boy which I loved as a kid since it was the biggest locomotive we had - crazy to see that it's running again!
I saw the last steam train when i was 5 yrs old. it was the Providence, RI & New Haven, CT. While visiting my Aunt Gerrie in Madison, Ct. Her back yard extended to the tracks. When it got closer i felt the ground shake ,It was roaring and belching steam. I ran like hell to the back door. I turned and looked and saw Auntie waving to the engineer and he waving back. The next day i stood my ground and he waved at both of us with a big smile.
hey mike when i heard this and saw it for the first time in a video i cried on the inside of my body.
i never thought i'd see a big boy in service 60 years after retirement.
now they need to restore a cab forward.
Those were Southern Pacific Baldwin oil burners which might not be prime candidates for restoration.
i dont think 4294 will be restored, if up wants to then yes
My goodness! That was the fastest 40 minutes I’ve ever experienced! My Grandson and I have enjoyed watching The Big Boy roll along! He said one day he wants to drive the trains he’s amazing and I hope one day his dream comes true! His Grammy/Nonna Robyn

I grew up about fifty miles from Cheyenne and every summer I’d catch one of the UPs black steam engines flying down the tracks towards Cheyenne. I always loved seeing that locomotive. This was long before the internet so I never knew when or what or why.
glad to see that old timer back on the tracks wish they would bring them all back
Yes, I'd like them to do 4004 next, as it's the oldest surviving big boys preserved.
Double header big boys, would be a magnificent sight.

So wonderful to see an important piece of history alive and strong again. Welcome 4014! She has a lot of new fame and success to look forward to : )
Think about it... in the 1940's... seeing one of these in person was only way to experience trains in "4K HD"
I know, right? I mean, look at how far we have come with tech
Facts.
35mm and 70mm films have better quality than 4K UHD. Look at "The General" from 1927 scanned from film to 4K UHD. Filming with today 4K UHD cameras is cheaper.
Eyes have vision of about 8 million K if you was to compare to a camera
Even today, I doubt the video does it justice.

As a young child born in the 50s i used to live not far from train tracks and would year that haunting distant sound of the trains blowing the whistle as it passed our town. It sure sounded a lot like this one. There is just something so hart warming to me about that sound and i cant even define it but hearing it again in this video brings back that feeling and lots of memories.
Absolutely superb quality video documenting this spectacular event. Well done. Having binge watched everything concerning the Big Boy 4014 since 2014 and over the past few days your video ranks among the very best. The UP Big Boy was and still to this day is the one handsome locomotive. He definitely gathers a crowd when he makes an appearance and I, as well as all these fine folks watching this, thank you for the extensive information and these beautiful videos you compiled together for the rebirth of this magnificent steam locomotive. ❤
Thanks you for this video. I'm an Italian railfan and I was there in May 2019. It was an amazing week for me (from 7 to 12) but surelly I cannot forgive 6 days with the Big Boy and american trains. Ciao.
In the summer of 2019, Big Boy came to my town in Iowa and stopped for a bit. I was super excited to see it since I had never really seen a steam locomotive in action before. It was probably the best thing I had seen all summer and I'm really glad my dad brought me to see it. I can't wait to see Big Boy again :)

Thanks for letting me take a journey along with the Big Boy! As a kid my dad told me about the locomotives that would run along the tracks near his home.
Welcome back Big ol' Boy!!!
Just saw “Big Boy” today in Argyle, Tx. What a beast!!!
Love this video! What an amazing engine, nice to see it running again. I love the old style consists with Vista Dome cars, observation cars, etc. I grew up riding trains like this, that had slumber coaches, room ettes, bedrooms and double bedrooms, etc and real dining cars. Nice to see one again!
It’s just so cool to think that this HUGE machine is ran on steam!! Yeah, like the stuff that evaporates from boiling water when making pasta, or the stuff that whistles from a tea pot. It that, but to EXTREME!! So cool!
I'm waiting to see 4014 take on an intermodal train by herself.
Now that would be cool!
In frieght service the engine still does not meet t4 emissions standards and the operating cost mean a diesel will still be the better candidate.
@@GamingLegend-ie4nl4014 would only pull an intermodal train in an emergency to clear the tracks.
@@Chuck59ish probably if they didn't have anyone else to do it.
@@GamingLegend-ie4nlYou should pull up UP Challenger # 3985 + 143 freight cars, it's 3985 coming up Archer's Hill in Wyoming pulled 143 intermodal cars by itself after the diesels broken down, it was published on Oct 13,2008. And because internodal is a time sensitive commodity they'll use the closed running engine.
When I was a child around 2000, I remember watching the vids about Challenger 3985 and the 844. The guys at Union Pacific were dreaming of restoring a "Big Boy" and I always hoped they would come through. I'm so happy that they made it happen.

Could the bridge talk in a very bridgy voice?

When I read on the internet Union Pacific got the ability to restore the beast and beauty. . . I was shocked. Me and my dad looked it up with daily reports. We were both anticipated to see it run together. Sadly he passed away but I know he was looking down in heaven in the Cajon Pass where we respectfully spread his ashes in honor of him loving trains as much as he did exactly where this engine came down 5 years later. I hope one day I'll experience this beautiful engine run by in California again knowing I missed it this year.

Thanks for putting this up. I've been keeping track of the #4014 since it left Pomona, Ca. 5 years ago. I'loved steam engines from the first time I saw one up close when I was three years old in New York City in 1957. I was born in Manhattan in May 1954. My parents left NYC by train when we moved to Cleveland. I've always have been amazed by the complexity and what it took to build a steam engine. I've also been a model railroader since I got my first train set when I was 8 years old. Right now, I have a UP Shay locomotive, an unmarked 4-6-4 steam loco, and an HO scale Rivarossi Big Boy marked UP #4001. If I can find the proper decals I will renumber it as #4014.
Thanks Mike for sharing your video with all of us. Very nicely done and somehow in most cases you avoided the throngs of people! Wish I'd have been there with you.
