- Erika Gray performs Paganini's "La Campanella" on Viola with the Highland Park Strings (hpstrings.org). The concert took place at Elm Place School in Highland Park, IL on December 16th, 2012. The concert also featured her brother, Johannes Gray, on cello. Conductor, Francesco Milioto, General Manager Lawrence Block. viola players are a special breed, that being said; a viola player transposing the great paganini to such a rich instrument, is somthing more than talent. thank you for posting this gem.

Nguyễn Thanh Hà The viola has a C, G, D and A string, instead of the G,D,A,E on a violin and the viola also has a deeper, mellower sound. I play viola and the difference is pretty obvious when played side by side with a violin

I play viola and believe me to get a viola to "cooperate" to even do this piece is pretty remarkable. Second observation, that's a really great sounding viola. I would be interested to know who the maker was.

Amazing performance! The bow gesture at the end is what I look like when I complete a fundraising proposal. I am fabulous with a keyboard, but I couldn't keep up with wonderful musicians back in my music school days. Congratulations and I wish you all the best in your career.
This is easily my favorite performance of this piece, lyrical and playful. As a musician I am not prone to say a lot but thought it was worth commenting on.

Yes, it's a bit too sharp (the pitch is a bit too high)
I'm not a musician but have come to love classical in the past few months. La Campanella is one of my favourites whether played on violin, viola, piano, etc. (although I think it does suit the violin a bit more because of the higher register and ability to sustain notes on the instrument).
At the risk of sounding snobby, here are some things that I noticed. I'm not sure if they are mistakes or variations that would constitute phrasing (I'm still not sure what phrasing is exactly), but these parts I noticed definitely did not detract from my enjoyment of this performance!

5:04 Sounds slightly rushed

Thanks for this piece. Impressive performance on the viola!!! However I didn't hear the typical double stop harmonics nor left hand pizzicatos associated with this piece when played on the violin.
I think that’s more the latter part of the concerto movement. This is the first part and by far much much easier than the full real concerto movement. I haven’t seen or at least looked for the whole movement transposed for viola, it’s certainly the monumental challenge!!!
