I have a similarponcho that I got from Eddie Bauer probably 25 years ago for $10 (when they used to have an annual big blow out sale). I've never done pants because I am typically in shorts. I also have an LL Bean 'traveler shirt which is fairly adjustable and probably just as old. Neither are light. I do have a 6 moons design umbrella which is newer.
PT, tried something like the snugpack but the sleeves and lack of side slits make it a lot hotter than a Sea to Summit poncho tarp because it cuts off a lot of the spots where the sauna vapour can escape. Better than a jacket, but it's still a sauna to me. But I run hot so the S2S is perfect and half the weight. I just deal with the light weight, and can get it on in strong wind with some practice. The snugpack would be better if you run cool. Horses for courses.
Agreed. Nothing bad to say about the S2S. I used it for a long time. All rain gear can be hot, but heavier material like the Snug more so, AND IT'S BLACK! Often when I deploy it I'm looking for another layer of warmth. When it's a warm rain it's a problem. Thanks. Keep Smilin'
Thanks for this. I note that when you wear the poncho over your pack then tie it round your waist to stop it flapping, it barely covers your butt. And your chaps don't cover your butt at all. So does this arrangement not lead to a wet butt? In previous videos, you have said you sometimes wear the poncho below your pack as a better way of weighing down the poncho...and it would cover your butt. But your pack is still exposed so back to pack liners / waterproof bags and /or pack covers???? Darned rain 😂 Keep tryn' 👍
Ya nothing is perfect, but I don't find my hindend getting wet even in a driving rain. I will often wear the poncho under my pack if it is super windy and raining. I do have a compactor bag in the bottom of my pack for those occasions. I do not use it much. I find a bag liner a real pain in the butt, but, better than a wet butt. Options are everything. The Snugpak Patrol Poncho has a zippered front down to the kangaroo pocket. Umbrella slips right in and attached to the hydration clips on my pack shoulder strap. I have a video somewhere. I think the original video on the Snugpak. Keep Smilin'
Right now I'm a little over 16 lbs. But I am changing food weight a bit. Propable not carrying a package of tortillas anymore (that's a pound). Just did a few days on the NCT and my total weight fora 3 day trip was 22 lbs. If I were going for a week it would be around 24 or 25. Keep Smilin'
I guess I should clarify my load out weight. That would be food, fuel (approx. 5 oz. Butane canister), 1 liter of water. Water weight changes depending on where you are hiking. Usually I am carrying a liter or less, but have carried up to 3. Keep Smilin'
Yes, the difference between total protection and half ass raingear is so slight weight-wise, I wouldn't even consider going lighter. Lots of option for good protection. You don't really need it, until you do! Thanks for commenting. Keep Smilin'
@@packtoter so what are your thought on The Packa by Cedar Tree? You wear it as a pack cover and quickly turn it into rain poncho without taking off the pack. Available in 15D, 30D, and a 40D that is breathable. Plus it has pit zips. I'm not sure if there is anything more perfect?
Just watched a video by badbathikes doing a gear review on it. I like it. Covers all the bases. I really like two things, the full front zipper, the dedicated pack cover, make that three, I also like the pit zips. Might have to sell my Snugpak. Weight would be about the same. I would want the 30d in a medium which looks like it's about the weight of my patrol poncho. Thanks for the introduction, I think. This might cost me some money. Keep Smilin'

I have gear almost as ld as me. I should open a backpacking museum. Keep Smilin'
I am only 1.88 m but it's small. Put my pack under it and im complete wet. So i use it with raintrousers and pack over it.

does this have any tie down loops? hard to tell from their website.
I was looking at the Bach Poncho which looks pretty similar minus the sleeves.
If you mean belt loops, no. I use a shock cord that I tied snaps too as my waist belt. Hope this answers your question. Keep Smilin'
Have you heard of or tried the Altus Poncho (ATMOSPHERIC H30) from Spain.?? I understand it is a poncho used on the Camino in Europe quite a bit
I'll check it out. Never heard of it. Thanks. Keep Smilin'
@@packtoter I have purchased one but I have NOT "field tested" it yet......not sure if it is as "heavy duty" as the one you use. Cheers

Brilliant. Great job.😊
How do you attach your umbrella to the pack strap when wearing a poncho?

What is your total pack weight nowadays excluding consumables?
