- How to build a DIY Bookshelf / Bookcase
In this video HiKOKI challenged me to build a limited tools project. I made this bookshelf using a circular saw, drill, and random orbit sander (plus clamps and measuring tools, etc...)

Adding a lip to the bottom will prevent bending along the bottom board, I made something similar to this with dowels and adding a slim piece of wood to the front really tied things up nicely
Just made a smaller version of this out of a single sheet of plywood, and it was my first completed woodworking project! Thanks for the inspiration Chris!
The insulation on the floor is genius. Brings up the piece off the ground to a soft work area, provides padding for the kneeling work and tools. SMORT. Probably even could stick your fasteners in some holes so they don't roll around, and a few other benefits.
There is a 2" pocket hole bit... comes in really handy. The bookshelf looks great!
I've got one in the mail :)
What size screws are you using?
Also, no need to pause the video for butterfly.
I wish you would have written or typed out the dimensions on the cut sheet...
Thank you for this build idea.
Great video! As someone who is appalling at DIY this video has really helped.
The dedication to the cubs cap is very much appreciated
From a stability stand point, do you think you could do this same thing but upright? Or would it wobble too much and not be supported enough?
So more height and less width.
Im sure you know this, but DeWalt and Milwaukee (and I'm sure others) have long square drive bits that work great on pocket holes but are shorter than the super long kreg one. They have them at home Depot and help with tight corners, at least to get the screw started. Great video thanks :)
I actually didn't know that. I'll try to remember to look for one next time I'm there. Which I'm sure won't be too long from now
All the Home Depot’s and Lowe’s that sell Kreg bits only sell them in a 2 pack with a 3” and a 6”bit. At least where I’m at in the south
Chris Salomone, The DEWALT DWARA100 Right Angle Attachment www.amazon.com/dp/B00C0VSNKQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_lQLWCb4J9KE4S comes in in handy in this situation along with a shorter bit.
Love how you actually wear your Js. Awesome work as well love your content. Keep it up
Heck yeah man. Made to be worn for sure :)
Nice one Chris, good you are collaborating with Keith as i have watched you both since your beginnings...
Very cool...appreciate it Dave!
I don't have money to support you on patreon but I always watch your videos, I hope for you the best. Please keep doing awesome videos, it's great content.
Regards from Peru :)
thanks for adding an Etch A Sketch to the bookshelf
What type stock are you using for this and would you recommend getting a Kreg jig for pocket hole drilling?
Thanks HiKOKI for supporting the maker community, your tools look great. Great video Chris. Someone needs to invent a way to drive pocket hole screws when there's limited space. Izzy? Aloha! : )
Kreg sell a 76mm square driver if that helps
Awesome work as always, Chris. Question on finishing plywood. Do you put a sanding sealer or anything on the plywood before you simple finish or stain? How do you prevent blotching?
Thank you. I don’t, and I’ve never had any issues. I think it varies species to species.
This is great! I have a wall partition at the top of my stairs and looking into putting some kind of shelving and this video gave me some good ideas. Thanks!
Awesome. Glad it was helpful :)
Next bucket list sponsor... Nike. Gotta get me them Jordan’s. This is an awesome diy weekend project.
Dude...if Nike ever sponsored me...that would be crazy. Me and Mike working together like that...gonna be another threepeat
I am loving the india ink thing. Do you put finish on over it or just the ink? I want woodpeckers to do a giveaway. You've got some really cool red tools. This is a nice "limited tools" build video... I am not usually a fan because they seem forced by the comment section but you did a really good job of making it seem like this is a proper and legit way to build it and not some hack it together to stop the complaints thing. That's supposed to be a compliment but I have no idea if it came across that way. Love you, man.
Taken as a compliment :)
For the india ink, it depends, but I think some sort of top coat would be ideal for a finish. Not a penetrating oil like i use more frequently
Damn you Salamone! That's the second week in a row you convinced me to change the design of my build. I am loving the India ink. Thanks for building something us commoners can make.
Thanks man. Glad you liked it :)
Sure, I could build this if I had a garage full of tools - oh wait, maybe I missed the point? I really liked the message/concept of taking the little extra time to set things up right for exponentially better results when you were talking about it on the podcast and it was cool to see it come to life in the video. Great build and video as always, Chris! (still haven't stopped my sign off comment ;) )
haha...thanks Ethan. You joke, but I'm sure some of those comments will be coming soon. Also, glad to see the streak still intact :)
I like how you are back in the garage for this
Another cool one in da books for Chris!!! Wouldn't expect anything less homie!!! Hope all is well, and Dirty Jersey out!!!
Thanks man :)
That is a nice and simple build! This must inspire a lot of people. I know i did now! thaks for the idea
That offcut that bounced up when you snapped it in two? It was a total missed opportunity to catch it and go straight to ninja swords.
haha...slow motion makes that look much more possible. Especially not knowing it was coming :)
Will this shelving unit be sturdy enough to be filled with books?
Thanks for doing this with basic tools! Been looking for something right alone these lines for a bookcase and a shoe rack.
Also, -8< -------> Butterfly
Awesome...hope it is helpful. We've had a butterfly infestation lately :)
I'm fully here for things I'm promised I can make
haha...and you can make it! Even out of Potatoes!!!! :)
Idaho would be proud
Chris: I promise you can build this simple DIY bookshelf
Me: i don't read books....
I don't either....it should be called a shoe shelf
@@Foureyes.Furniture -- yeah, not a single one of those "book" things in sight! ha ha. nice work tho
It can hold so many Kindles.....
Woodworker’s hypebeast
haha have you seen the new "Off White" Hikoki line.....i'm getting in line now!
So, Indian Ink is the new Epoxy River table?
How do you keep this thing from racking? Wouldn't a backer board be in order here?
No...there were so many connection points on this one it was very stable. I would recommend anchoring it to a wall if you have kids or live where there are earthquakes though.
@@Foureyes.Furniture Awesome, sounds good man. I figured it is one of those things that feels more stable than it might seem. Thanks for following up!
Hey Chris, this is the second time I've seen you use the ink as a stain. Any reason for using it over some black stain from the big box store? Would love to hear your thoughts on it. Maybe a quick video. I liked the way it came out in the credenza video.
I've honestly never tried black stain. I should try some to compare...but this stuff works so well...
You didn’t have to drip that hard on us with all those J’s
All videos going forward must contain at least two pairs. It's the new dress code policy...and even I am not above it :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture flexin real hard on us 😂
Exactly what I was thinking lol. Hey Chris what are the Jordans from your last video, I've been trying to find them but not having any luck.
@@Foureyes.Furniture Well, it seems to be the right time to ask you about appropriate sneaker storage the Foureyes way! Love your work. Greetings from Germany.
@jimmy z...I'm not sure which pair they were. Usually the only pair that I wear that people dont' recognize are the 33s
Best DIY youtuber...
Another great video. I love that you are doing something with minimalist tools or at least showing a minimalist option. Kudos. Maybe you covered it in an earlier video, but what is that blue base attached to the "MFT-type" table against the wall at the back? It's behind the butterfly at 2:05. It sort of looks like something by Kreg, but I don't recognize it. Keep up the great work. #GoCubsGo
That's the Kreg ACS. If you go back about 5 videos or so, I have a whole project built using it. Really cool tool.
here is a link to that video - ruclips.net/video/4C1Namjo0dM/видео.html
Is this a imperial ton or a metric ton you're talking about? 2:36
What do you suggest for the best matching dowel wood type for filling in the pocket screw holes in Baltic Birch?
William Su um...birch?
I've never tried it...but I was going to say, there is a "birch" wood that would probably work decently.
Maybe I missed it, but did you hide the pocket screws on the vertical partitions some how?
I didn't, but you could. They make a plug cutter, or you can buy the plugs that they sell...especially if you're going to paint or stain and you don't need to match the species.
I won't build it, but i will like the video because it's another great one. keep it simple, man
Nice simple design, will have to try this at some point, onr thing really caught my eye though, the jordan 3s in black cement on the finished project a shoe I have wanted for a while now haha
they are eye catching :)
Chris! Loved the video! Really simple yet elegant build. I was wondering if you use the ANC on your Sony headphones whilst you work? And how do they cope with the noises from your power tools?
I do...I can still hear them, but they work pretty dang well. Best thing I've found so far.
@@Foureyes.Furniture what happened with your beige XM2??
Amazing! Your videos always make me want to make furniture, so i love that you gave us a good place to start!!
This American Life meets woodworking
I absolutely love the bookcase amazing work👍 and btw the Jordan’s are 🔥
Could you get the black dividers in there without pocket holes?
Hey Chris.... who makes that red tipped tiny square you were using.....nice!
Sweet build Chris. And sweet sneaker shots!👟👟👟
Make an Ironing Board cabinet thing. That would be cool and I need some ideas to start.
Nice work!!
Here is a TIP for you!
If you take one of the pocket hole driver bits, cut off a little less than half of it, they will fit into much tighter spaces with a drill driver! Be mindful that if you cut it too short, they will cause your drill driver to rub against the upright piece of your work!
Love your videos!
Nice. maybe I'll get a second one to cut short.
Dewalt has a 90-degree adapter that I've used for tight pocket screws with my impact driver without issues.
He might not be allowed to use one in a video sponsored by HiKOKI ;)
I have one of those 90's...it's come in handy more than once.
Or Chris can just buy a shorter bit.
Flix113 - He can always paint it black to cover up the brand?
After using the Kreg guide, what’s your opinion?
The rip guide? I love it...it's so useful for breaking down plywood.
Can you do another limited tools build
Would using a dado on the upright partitions work just as well?
Four eyes.... jordan fours.....i see you Chris!
haha...you're on to me
Love the project. I didnt know they sold Hikoki in the states. I love Hitachi and their new Metabo HTP branded stuff.
They don't sell it here. It's all Metabo HPT here, but it's exactly the same.
What are those tables you have back there (with the blue metal legs)??
Underrated shoe game
I like the design but I would of stayed with the different colors. I can see many uses for this bookcase.
3:05, the board falling in the background 😂😆
yeah, it was windy. If I remember the scene I think it was an insulation panel.
Hi there, your video helped s lot in diy, can you pls tell the name of the tool used in 7:35th minute to 7:40.
this is great. i'm also gonna use it in an unfinished storage room in my basement. 4:16
Love you channel and videos !! Anything home improvement and home makeover is my favourite and I love seeing you transform your home into a place that represents you so well! Keep up the great work I look forward to your videos !! 1:19
I see you flexing on us with the Jordans.
I need to feel inspired when I look at my feet in the workshop :)
How is no one commenting on the "lost" glasses? SO relatable!
Lol, yeah
She was actually talking about her sunglasses...I just like to make her look foolish in the video :)
a very nice shelf.
You got me out here wanting to build all this amazing furniture and I don't even own the tools to do it
Not sure if you remember me from last time, but once again... good job, Chris
I'll be honest...I don't. But I still appreciate it :)
What’s it like to wear Jordan 1’s and 5’s as your shop shoes? Haha. Keep up the good content
Couldn't tell you...but the 1s and 4s are pretty nice :P
JK man. Actually, in all seriousness, the bulk of the time I wear Jordan 33s. And it's funny the difference between those and the 1s in terms of the amount of support they offer. They feel like a tool...where as the 1's feel like you just strapped something to your foot. Lots of progress has been made. d
@@Foureyes.FurnitureI'm pretty sure I just had to forfeit my sneakerhead card. Yes, Jordan 4s. I keep seeing the 33's but haven't found a colorway that does it for me. I think I'm too much of a classic Jordan fan to be receptive to the newer designs.
That opening shot, using the slider was so nice. Did you do it more than once or just do computer wizardry to make that happen? Also the shoe game is 🔥 how many pair are in the collection?
Thanks man. For that shot I take the same shot X number of times, then overlay them all and cut or fade between them so it looks like things are appearing. As for the shoes, probably 7 or so now :)
That’s what I three shots then layer them. It’s those little details that I love about your work.
are the vertical patricians required for support or just for appearance?
A little of both. You put some partitions on the underside to the ground too and it prevents the shelves from sagging.
@@Foureyes.Furniture okay cuz it looks like my wife wants a shelof like that but like 60 in ches wide so im trying to figure out how many supports i need
Did you remove the support below? Cant see it on the end. Great video, thanks 👍
Photoshop :) - I actually gave it away, but what I would do if I were keeping it would be cut a long strip and recess it back from the front about 3/4 of an inch.
LOVIN the cement 3s
Thanks man :)
Really nice :D 1:43
Are the plans on your patreon?
Hi Chris, where are these pocket drills? I need details on that part
The directions on assembling where the pieces go and which plank/wood needs a pocket drill are not clear. Please advise! Newbie to woodshop lol
Chris, love your videos, but struggle with the Cubs hat!
haha...it might comfort you to know that i'm actually not even a fan of baseball. I like basketball. I just needed a hat and I choose the C for "Chris' and thought they had a really nice classic looking hat.
Love it!! Seems quite easy.
Stepping your J’s game up!
working on it :)
Another great video Chris
Great video. An avid follower of your work
Nice looking bookshelf Chris! Thanks for sharing the video.👌👍😎JP
Finna build this right now
This is fantastic, thanks so much!
creases df outa those shoes damnn
Yeah...for the most part, my philosophy is use and enjoy them. A few pairs I keep nice though :)
Nice, simple build.
I feel special being this early
Congrats man...you earned it ;)
Duuuude, I know it wasn't that slow when it happened, but if you had caught that snapped board at 2:40 in slow motion that would have been so badass!
I thought the same thing when I watched it back! but yes, obviously much different in real time :)
Dude thats a so simple Design but uniqe because of the black Panels. Great job👍👌💪
Thanks man :)
Nice work Chris! 👍🏻👊🏻
Don't the neighbours complain about the noise!? Love the channel by the way!
Go Cubs!!
Как всегда качество на высоте!
Okee I see you with the J's! I am a baller for 14 years now on a high level and I also have my own shop :P
Cut from the same cloth :)
Chris, you make stuff that demonstrates Art not furniture making. Awesome Cinematography & Editing. May you post videos more frequent?
Thanks! I wish I could, but they take a long time to produce. So I'm going as fast as I can
Nice build!
Shoe game is 🔥 🔥🔥
I love it!
Go Cubs!
I would watch your videos for the sketchup animations alone.
Thanks man
