- "Fireside Chat" (Ep1) - Introducing a new series where we'll be covering a variety of different topics, as well as answering some of your questions in a "Q&A" style format. Simply leave a comment below regarding either a topic that you'd like to see or a question that you have, and I will do my best to cover the subject, or answer a few viewer questions in upcoming episodes. We'll do this fireside in a casual manner with some additional related footage included to help keep it informative and entertaining. Looking forward to hearing from you my friends!

John, I look forward to whatever you want to do. Your videos are like a clean mountain breeze blowing through the pines alongside a laughing stream. And you make it look easy.
Honestly, I'm just glad you're back and posting again. Your videos are always great. I like the chats. Would you consider doing a Vine session? We could post live questions.
Anyways, I think topics that may work may be:
Synthetic versus natural fibers for all clothing.
Benefits of durable gear versus light weight gear.
Pros and cons of group versus solo backpacking. You could invite some backpacking buddies for this campfire chat.
Sharing photos and stories of your favorite places.
Sharing photos and stories of your craziest experiences.
Invite a family member or long time friend.
Demonstrate or discuss some of your favorite meals or cooking methods. This can be broken up into two sections 1) backpacking, 2) camping at a regular campsite.
Tips and tricks that you have shared in the past, and have either improved upon or are using another method now.
Something like the video you did a couple years ago when instructing the group of kids on wilderness basics. I showed that to our younger scouts.
I can go on, but hopefully that is a start. Keep up the great work.

Hi John, like the idea about fireside chats. How about some things to help a person when their body just isn't working as well as it used to. Ways to keep a person on the trail! Thanks for all your videos ...very much appreciated!
Hi John, as a new hiker, and someone who hopes to start backpacking next year, I personally loved the tip of the week. Getting advice and ideas from people who have already learned a lot from years of experience means I can listen, learn and try to avoid a lot of new hiker/backpacker pitfalls. I appreciate all you (and many others in the community) take the time to do, record and post. I learn a lot from them! Cheers!
John I love fireside chats. I have many photos and a few videos of doing just that. Unfortunately for me fires have been basically illegal in our forests for the last year. Almost makes it not worth going camping if you can't have a nice fire at night. My question to you though is whether or not you are employed in the outdoor gear industry in any way? You seem like you would be great at the retail level. I can see you working in a gear store of some sort. Helping customers choose a back pack or other items related to camping and hiking. Also wondering how often you get to go out hiking and camping where you DON'T take video of your adventures... You know. Just on your own just for you and Kato. As always I love your vids and I for one am not surprised at all by the numbers. You and your videos are so helpful to the YT outdoors community. Thanks for all you do.

I like it! This concept is how I came to name my channel CampfireTalk. It's always been a high point on every trip sitting around the fire with friends and talking into the night.
Maybe in an upcoming Q&A you could discuss when your love for the outdoors began. Also, was there a time when you didn't go hiking, camping and fishing then returned back with a greater appreciation?
Maybe roll in an old photo or two. Thanks brother!

Great to see you posting more vids John, and I think the Q&A around the fire is a great production idea, for you especially.
My question is: do you ever experience Preparation Hesitation? And how do you combat it? I'll explain.
I have a 8-5 day job and reasonably busy life outside of work. Finding time to pull away for some backpacking or even a day hike can be challenging. Especially the monkey-on-my-back mindset of being prepared in the outdoors. I'd love to be the kind of free-wheeling spirit who leaves his pack loaded in his car and drives to the TH after work on Friday, but I'm just not that sort. I have total confidence in my outdoor skills but I simply can't shake the notion that any backpacking is somehow a "big trip" and I need to prepare "for reals". Also, living and backpacking in CO means I keep 2 eyes on the weather, which can shut down a trip before it even starts.
I never regret my time spent on trail even in bad weather, but thoroughly setting myself (or my group) up for success on a backpacking trip can sometimes squash my enthusiasm prior to getting on trail. It's an amorphous problem that's difficult to describe, similar to the vagueness of paranoia, but it does exist. I've even had people pull out of planned trips simply because they couldn't handle the prep/packing process.
It's easy to say, "Suck it up, wimpy. Just get on trail." I guess I'm just looking for some discussion on the topic, and any suggestions to let 'er rip and just get on trail.

WOW,you seem to have hit the jack pot here ! I've read most of the comments b4 mine. All great topics. When I'm out in the woods weather alone or with a group the first thing on my mind is safety. Especially open fire safety. I was with a group once that was a father & son outing. One of the dads offered to set a fire. He built a nice rock pit just like the one in your video. Problem was he dug the ground a bit & exposed dead roots from a tree. Those roots smoldered under ground, resurfaced just outside our site. A small fire broke out. TG we contained it & extinguished it rather quickly. Hope you have a Merry Christmas & look foward to all your videos.
Wow. Everyone has some good questions for you. I have already learned a lot from watching your vids; you know those smack yourself on the forehead & why didn't I think of that, kind of stuff. Looking forward to everyone's questions & learning even more stuff.

First John, it's great to see you back. When I first got back into the bushcraft/hiking/camping thing you were a great resource and inspiration. So many, many, thanks. I would love to see a discussion on how we take care of our dogs on the trail. I've seen a lot of videos of pups on the trail but none on emergency treatment. What if they tangle with a bear or coyote? What if they have a a fall and sprain/break a limb? How to carry a (big) dog out if that's necessary? My pooch is my best trail buddy and his safety is always on my mind.

Love your videos. I'd love to see some of your ideas for deep winter camping. I got into deep winter camping when teaching a Royal Rangers outpost at our church many years ago. By deep winter, I mean during the coldest months of they year! The boys and parents were astounded by how warm and toasty they were, despite sleeping in a natural materials shelter, using only a sleeping pad and wool blanket! One of our boy's father came along and brought his big RV camper "just in case the boys got too cold." LOL! He slept so toasty warm that he took his entire family out on a winter camp out AND LEFT HIS RV AT HOME!
PS: I am going to use your car window sun blocker idea to make an even more warm and comfy experience! We are thinking about experimenting with making shirts and trousers out them! We will let you know how it goes!

Nice video John, very relaxed. You might do a fireside chat video for topic x and topic y and cut the topic into the fireside chat video.
Really like to see you drive home the fact to viewers that they can lighten up, fairly cheap, and get out easier than they think. People complicate outdoor adventures way too much, and sadly never get out. Gas is cheap right now, day trips! :)
To sit by the bonfire and relax and talk is the best. Most importent to take time to do it in real, but nice if we can 'talk' about different topics on YT too. Think we have to go out today, and bring with our camera. Atb Tove and Kaja in Norway

I'm having trouble with speed;
Compared to my hiking buddies I'm a bit more careful and thus carry more food, water and items. When packing up our winter packs, I have a habit of doing it with precision. This leads to me being slower then my buddies, and needing too much time to get going. My question is:
- have you thought about making your backpack system fast?
- What things come to mind?

John .. do you mind me asking what general area you are from? Watch all of your videos and find them informative, especially the tip of the week. A lot of the other channels are location specific and don't really relate to my area (Eastern Ohio)as far as availability of certain trees and plants . I like how you keep your tips general in nature. Great job ! ~Chuck~
Hi John. Perhaps you could something this spring, on some backpacking with stream/creek fishing. I am looking to find/create a setup, where I have some type of compact and lightweight fishing gear (perhaps similar to a Tenkara style) but smaller, less expensive, or even DIY, where I could fish on some 1-3 day backpacking trips. My first attempt, might be this coming spring, in Michigan, while backpacking on the Manistee River Trail. I have no fishing experience in small rivers, streams or creeks. I don't know if this type of topic would appeal to many viewers or not.
One question I have always thought of is do the videos take away some of the joy of being in the woods alone? One of the reasons i go into the woods to walk or hunt or camp is to be alone and away from the busy world. Solitude is hard to find these days. I like people and enjoy their company, but sometimes it is nice to be alone. It is one of the reasons I have not started a channel.

I bought a Warbonnet Blackbird Hammock and the Dutch Ultralight Half-Wit Hammock. I still see a lot more backpackers are still using tents. I'm sure that cost is a factor. I would like to hear your thoughts on Hammocks vs. Tents. Bob

of the Survival experts here on RUclips have been less than eager to answer for me
is, how do you poop in the woods? Do you need to include toilet paper
or wet naps in your survival kit? Do you have to bury it? I heard that
if you urine in a perimeter around your campsite that animals, mostly
male animals, won't cross the perimeter. Is that true?

I've got a subject that might be interesting. These days, I live closer to the city and getting to a nice place to camp or hike is logistically complicated. Finding the time is hard too. I grew up in the American Southwest and am used to wide open spaces with easy access. Now I live in the Southeast, which is crowded, swampy, and hot. But that's no reason not to get out. You have any tips for getting out the door quickly for a night or two? I'm used to week long backpacking trips in the Rockies that require lots of planning and packing. I've brought what I know to the Southeast and it's just takes too long and I lose motivation to go out. I was willing to put in the work for high altitudes & sweeping landscapes, but thick swamps and mosquitoes just don't do it for me.
I have to change what my idea of camping is and how I get ready for it. Any ideas?
Thinking it over I think I have a Topic for the QnA , Favorite Family memory of a outdoor setting and or camping.

Hey, sounds like a great idea! I like the fireside chats, but I'd recommend one qualifier. Don't make the mistake that others have made by opening up to political or religious subjects. No matter which way you lean personally, you will piss off around half of your subscribers no matter what. As long as you avoid those two subjects, it should be a success. Thanks!

Another channel that I sub to does a similar fireside chat from time to time but announces it in Facebook and takes 'live' questions thru FB while at the campsite. (Depending on your coverage I guess) with the footage recorded and made into a video. Might cut down on sifting thru comments but you'll be answering on the fly as well :) just a thought my friend.
John First Merry Christmas to you and yours. Second. How about discussion on camper originated equipment they find most useful. An example is on 1Reallybigmonkey Dave Pearson and some of the things he has and does create. They make camping easietr and fun little projects in the off season.

I'd like to learn more about balanced backpacks where some is carried in front. Sounds more comfortable. I wonder if it's possible to carry more that way without feeling it as more. Also the best way of having part of the pack in front: should the front packs hang from the shoulder strap or rest on the belt? For a small female that can't carry too much weight and wants to go lightweight, how much weight in back, how much in front? Thanks for any tips.

Great idea.
I have been thinking of axes lately. Of course it depends on where you are and what you are doing but it seems to me that the average hiker/bushcrafter/camper is going to grab a saw over an axe 9 out of 10 times. I think this may be due to advancements in the saw market as well as other reasons i.e. safety, better clothing and shelter options etc.
What are your thoughts and feelings? Are saws here to stay as the go to processing tool?

Hi I live here on the West Coast around LA County area and it seems to me that the hikers and backpackers around here need to have the latest and greatest backpacking equipment and they frown on commonsense equipment like making your own equipment what do you think about that?

How about getting a guest speaker on certain subjects involved as well? Thing of a subject like no trace camping and have one of the local rangers there with you.... Have someone live in the background that gives you feedback as it happens that is related to the topic. Try to get sort of real time.
Sweet...you could do a whole series on alcohol stoves...like...what's the best stove you've ever seen...hint...intense angler stove maybe...
