Thank you so much Jay for your book club, really makes a difference for the average car guy! We may not be able to afford the kind of cars you have in your garage but we can both read about the great stories from the books in your book club! Keep it going Jay
I really enjoy the access we have as viewers to outstanding programing. The cars, interesting people and top notch editing and camera work, there is no better channel.
Thanks Jay. Splendid memories there; I was a car crazy teen in the fifties who thought that Briggs was fantastic. May I suggest segments on other heroes of the '50s? I remember Carl Kieckhafer's (Mercury marine) ads in Hot Rod magazine for engineers to work on his Chrysler 300 stock car team...and how about Ak Miller and his "Caballo de Hiero" "T" body hot rod roadster entry in the panamerican road race. This is a super replacement for the Tonight show and I hope that it runs even longer.
I was lucky enough to twice meet Mr. Cunningham and even more so to have a ride in (one of) his personal E Type at Bridgehampton with Walt Hansgen driving. He was one of a kind, and he can be properly be called by a term very few other men (and almost none today) can be called: sportsman. How many other men helmed an America's Cup winning sloop, finished 4th at LeMans after driving 20 of the 24 hours solo AND were on the cover of Time Magazine?
i liked reading your comment. My grandfather George Huntoon raced with Briggs Cunningham as one of his co-drivers, he raced with Briggs in LeMans and Bridgehampton and several other tracks. I believe he won Bridgehampton as well. I wonder if you might have met my grandfather at the time you met Briggs?
Thank you Jay. This was delightful. I have just added this to my "non-parts" auto-purchase wish-list. Especially nice to know he was a genuinely good guy.
Jay, I learned in my research that B. Cunningham had a early '60's Valiant with a slant six that he had converted with the Hyper Pak kit consisting of a special intake/exhaust manifolds, 4 barrel carb, hi lift/duration cam and other supporting tidbits. The engine would have looked just like the engine in the '60 XNR that you made a video of. Just FYI....and thanks for these videos!
Comments and suggestions.... I'd like to see Jay do something with his garage, not just as a hobby but as a show of sorts. I like the videos, but I see a potential for something more... maybe do a live video stream, a web based show, interview folks in the car industry past and present. All about Cars with Jay Leno.... or something like that. I really miss the Tonight Show.... I like Jay's style and he's just a dude like the rest of us. I wish Jay would come on here and pick a few good questions and actually answer them himself. I think it would be awesome.
In the late sixties, I think 68 our scout troop from Santa Ana took a tour of his museum. I think that is where I caught the virus. The three cars I remember was an old Cadillac that Briggs raced looked like a beached whale, an open wheel white BMW and that Bugatti that the tour guide said was the first car to be worth over a million dollars.
Good episode Jay. Mr. Harman is a painter of pictures through words and his abilities to funnel history into a package for us is fantastic. I enjoy your WebCast and as a guy who loves cars, please keep this effort going. Since you have lost your day job I hope you are able to keep the cars and neat stuff. I'm working on a restore of an old VW Bug. Books by John Muir for us VW guys are neat and other stuff documenting the Porsche life is a neat show you could do. Thanks
We are fortunate to have Briggs Cunningham's 1911 American Underslung in the collection at the Seal Cove Auto Museum. The car is featured in Harman's book, but incorrectly identified as a 1910 American Underslung. The car was just shown, March 9, at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and won the F.I.A. Corporate Award. Underslungs were a featured class at the Concours.
I miss the Cunningham Museum. Housed in a bland concrete tilt-up building in an anonymous "industrial estate", inside was a wonderland. ALL the Cunningham racers, a Bugatti Royale, and on and on. It was not unusual for Briggs himself to be there, and once at lunchtime, mid-week, I happened to be eating my taco truck taquitos across the street when he took one of the C-4s out in the parking lot and gave it a good rogering, his white hair streaming, and a fat grin on his face.
I loved that museum. My dad and I were there one afternoon, browsing the gift shop after going through the museum for the umpteenth time. Mr. Cunningham walked in and just started talking to me like I was one of the important people rather than the 13 year old that I was. He even took both of us for a tour of the shops and some of the cars that weren't on display. An absolutely lovely man.
What color is on the car at the very end that Jay Leno is driving? (I know it's a blue but what is it called if I wanted to paint my car that same color?) Thank you for sharing and providing information on the history of the automotive industry and individuals associated with it. Much appreciated!
Really Jay Thanks for the chance to see & hear from people that have some of the most interesting stories and car's I will ever see in my life: I do have one question Jay; Have you got your Slot-Mods Track yet?: BFC-EEE-YA!:
Oddly, the ISBN for this book (978-1854432605) is associated with a title that misspells the subject's name as "Cummingham". That can't have helped sales! Anyhow, if you're searching for it, use the ISBN or misspelled name.
but it is super annoying that they let me see some of the videos but not others. i just cant see the reason for it. i cant see any negative effects from their point of view for letting me see these clips. i get that some tv-series are blocked, because they often sell the series to tv-stations here, and then it could potentially hurt their buissness. but why the heck would they not let me see jay leno ramble about some book if i wanted to? :/ i dont like how youtube is developing :/
Haha! "Or wherever you sit with your automobiles" - I had visions of myself sitting in the garage between my two cars on a plastic lawn chair reading it. Ah, to be Jay Leno the rich and famous comedian instead of Matthew Sharpe the lowly software engineer.
Thank you so much Jay for your book club, really makes a difference for the average car guy! We may not be able to afford the kind of cars you have in your garage but we can both read about the great stories from the books in your book club! Keep it going Jay
I took my wife to the Cunningham Museum quite a few times when we lived in SoCal. Beautiful Museum..... beautiful cars and motorcycles.

True dedication to another mans life story.
Jay Leno should be the host of USA Top Gear, he would be perfect for the role. Loving these book reviews.
I'd miss The Tonight Show but I wont miss Jay Lenos garage .

I rember seeing Briggs Cunningham at the Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin "Road America "
sports car track in 1955 and '56.
Sound level guys! We can all turn it down to where we want it but some of us can't get it turned up to where we like it.
A wonderful document. A comprehensive look at an extraordinary man & his extraordinary cars &...HOLY SHIT, HOW MUCH DID HE SAY IT COSTS???

I think that's a Duesenberg.
I also thought it was a Duesenberg but was not certain. It is a very beautiful car.

It is a real big pain in the ass that you dont make these clips available outside of the US.

jay leno garage is actually produced by NBC so it's up to them ;_;
but it is super annoying that they let me see some of the videos but not others.
