brilliant for such a short lesson, I've been meaning to learn this for years. I noticed on the original with Bowie playing the 12 string that there is a big cigarette burn near the hole of the guitar, so the guitar had seen some life.
Hi, from another left-handed guitarist. Not sure about the theory, but I find it more intuitive to think of the F#dim as a D7 over F#. Great tutorial. Thanks!
Как я рад что нашёл тебя, ведь я тоже левша! Сначала я подумал: -хмм, это так мило что он пишет аккорды и для левшей тоже, а то меня так достало переворачивать их у себя в голове, но потом увидел твою руку и обрадовался
Aha, someone else is finally hearing the high E to high F toggle in the intro. It's amazing that so many popular youtube videos completely ignore it. I'm not 100% sold on your theory as to how he plays it on record - musicians often change the way they play a song for live purposes (cf Keith Richards). Personally, I use my thumb on the low E-string, for the main chords and let the top E string ring out when playing the first two beats of the Bb chord (in VI position), then mute the E string with my index finger for the last two beats so that the F on the B string is the high note. And the same with the F chord (in I position)- leave the E-string open, then lower your index finger onto the high F. It seems truer to the album version than your approach, at least to my ears. But it's all subjective, and admittedly I haven't tested this with a 12-string guitar.
Yeah, I think the definitive way to play it is a mystery that may never be solved. Maybe if the studio multitracks ever get released into the wild. There are certainly multiple ways to approach this which all sound good.
And as I said, we need 12-string guitars to test. I prefer my approach because on a 6-string guitar more notes are being played for the Bb chord, which leads to a lusher sound. But your approach on a 12-string guitar would already have that "lushness". Also, do you really hear that maj7 in the Bb chord (i.e. the A) that your chord shape has? I would have thought the initial F would have provided enough dissonance for the Bb chord, but I could very well be wrong. An other alternative would be just to play the Bb partial standard chord in I position with the middle, ring and little fingers on the D, G and B strings, with the open top E, then bring the index finger down on the F. Yeah, ideally Rick Beato gets the multitracks and does this song for one of his videos.
The thing which really makes me believe that it's all played down at fret 1 (on the studio recording, at least) is that there is no "string sliding" sound that would occur from moving down/up the fretboard between the Bb's and the F's. But yes, the use of a 12-string changes everything.
LeftHandedGuitarist its def played at first as i watched other fay on bbc4 bowies music documentry where they were coving his 2 albums from ziggy album and that song a prouducer said its starts of with a B Flat inversion with some open notes and goes to a F maj

I make the backing tracks with Guitar Pro. Making one of these videos takes quite a while - I'd say an average of 10-15 hours from start to finish. Sometimes I've made one in an afternoon if the song is simple.
Hi! Your vids help me very much, and I appreciate your way of playing Bowie's songs greatly. I don't know if you read the comments after two years of publishing this video, but there's a question. I wonder how you mute open strings of the chord at 2:24. Thanks in advance :)
Happy to help. String muting (or string damping) in general is done by using the fingers of your hand at certain angles to stop unwanted noise. It can take a while to figure it out but it eventually happens naturally. Often it's very subtle, and in this case it's a mixture of releasing pressure and angling the fingers down just enough to dampen the sound by only lightly touching the strings.
About the intro, in the Top Of The Pops performance of Starman, David Bowie is playing the first chord (Bbmaj7) the first way you showed it. I don’t know what videos or photographs you found of him doing it differently.
You can't see Bowie's hands at all during the intro of the TOTP video. This is the video I found which shows him playing both intro chords down in the fret 1 area: ruclips.net/video/bJO97AKDgH0/видео.html
@@LeftHandedGuitarist In those Dunstable and Aylesbury clips, he is clearly playing it in first position - If I remember rightly, in the 1970s the BBC required musicians to mime to a backing track that they recorded for the show - so Bowie's hand position may not represent what he actually played on the track.
LeftHandedGuitarist Ahh thank you for the reply. I thought it was a Washburn from the headstock shape. If you could tell me what year roughly and where it was made I would really appreciate that. And I promise no more questions lol. Thank you 🌠🌌🙋♂️👍
