really great car. i own a 2010 g37 sedan and its been my favorite car. i got it at 49k miles and didn't have any major issues until 145k miles which in part is my fault. the car overheated and due to the aluminum block, got a crack in it and currently swapping out the engine for one with 58k miles on it. lesson learned, aluminum blocks cannot withhold a lot of pressure, my car slightly overheated and blew a gasket and got a hairline crack on the block other than that great engine!

They’re fun engines to mess around with definitely recommend to try either the vq35hr engine which came only on the 07-08 350z models and the vq37vhr that comes in the current Nissan 370z
The VQ37HR is not as efficient as the VR38, it is close. The VR Bore is 98 mm with the same 86mm stroke. VR38 also has, the same deck height and since the bore is slightly larger, so are the Valves and their arrangement within the larger Bore. The VVT and the Twins also are an improvement. As a matter of fact the VR38 VE table is 3-6% more [86%-83% at 7000RPM/ 96%-90% @55000RPM)) and thus, has a bit more flow.[ (Air Volume/Cycle)/(Displacement)]. I am making 925 Engine HP with Stock Internals [E85 using ECUTEK] and upgraded Turbos. Again, the VQ is nothing to "sneeze" at!!! NISSAN did a great job with the VQ37HR and thanks for your learned review of the VQ37HR, you are extremely knowledgeable: very refreshing with all the "crap" on the Internet!
My 08 G37 6 speed only has 64k on it. No mods except for Z1 motorsports cold intakes and rear differential bushings. Other than that it’s bone stock and I intend to keep it that way for the forceable future. Great engine!
Thanks for the nice overview. For the record my G37x did not come with variable exhaust timing. So, not all of these have this feature. Perhaps only G37 coupe does?
I have a VQ37 in an Infiniti Q60S and it does not have oil loss issues. I do change my oil every 3K miles so I am not sure if it would show oil loss if I were to let it go longer. Infiniti says the maximum mileage for oil changes is 5K miles.
I'd say the gains with a tune and cost effective bolt-ons goes a long way. My G37 stock put down 272 HP on a dynojet. After, I had 2.5" madrells installed, no cats, X-pipe and a Borla muffler. With this it went up to 290HP pre-tune and 307 post tune (Mustang Dyno). I'm still running the stock intakes with K&N filters. Mine is a 7 speed AT which I thought I'd regret because I couldn't find a good manual one to buy, but I don't. With the same tune I was able to get the TQ management tables raised which allows it to shift hard and chirp tires all the way to 3rd at WOT. If I wanted to boost it to 500 HP, I'd prefer to keep the same auto trans and reinforce it; there are a few companies that do it. With the current settings, the shifts feel like a DCT.
Well for the trans. There’s 2 weak points when boosting it. The flex plate and the torque converter. Because otherwise the trans in the vr q50/60’s are really similar mechanically. But because of the better flex plate and torque converter the vr trans hold 600-700 before needing a built trans. But honestly if you do transmission cooler and a aftermarket flex plate if you plan on doing about 500 your stock trans should be fine.
I have heard that originally the Nissan 370Z actually overheated stock due to poorairflow to the engine, but 332-350hp on this NA engine is truly impressive.
Anyone may correct me if I’m wrong but from the years of 09-11, the 370z didn’t come with an oil cooler. I assume that was a huge part of their overheating/engine blowing issue. Even though the OE oil cooler produced after 2012 isn’t that great either which is why I need to purchase the Z1 oil cooler.
I have a 2019 370z sport coupe 6M and the oil does run hot in stop and go city driving on warm days, about 220⁰F. Nissan did improve the oil to water intercooler, but the oil still tends to run hot. This is due to the VVEL mechanism that puts a lot of contact pressure on the oil that heats it up. The Nissan ester oil that I use in it tends to shear down from it's nominal 30 weight grade to a 20 grade after about 3k miles, which is when I change it. The good thing is that my engine uses virtually no oil, after the careful break in I gave it.
Truly a gem of an engine with none of the Direct Injection gimmicks, nor turbochargers/supercharger we have these days. It was all raw, uninhibited power!
The oem intake is designed so well the only intakes I believe that help are the stillen gen 3 style. People who put those “CAI” which in reality is a HAI don’t understand how intakes work. Only downside to the gen 3 style like it are almost always made of metal of course but no coating. Definitely need to wrap them up with heat resistant tape u.
@@sk8punk318 Allot of people don't understand that when you use 3inch intakes you gotta upgrade your throttle body to 70mm to take full advantage of the 3inch because keeping the stock TB is like trying to breath threw a small straw
@@AQCE245 TB isn't the only thing you need to upgrade if you get 3" intakes. These noobs don't realize you need to do ported lower manifold. If the space for air remains the same from the inside of the engine, stretching it out from the intakes makes negligible gains
My 370Z has a Stillen Hen 3 long tube intake, a Fast Intentions true dual x-pipe exhaust and a dyno tune on a Dynojet chassis dyno. Running 94 octa in e gas, We got about 390 peak crank horsepower at 7200 rpm and a nearly flat torque curve across the whole rev range.

So glad I got a ‘19 Z base sport model. That said it has bad snap oversteer and feels a bit numb. Appreciate any tips for corrections thereof. Not too interested in increasing engine output - can’t use it on the street really and am not going to track the car.
I have the exact same car with the 6M gearbox in Magnetic black. I haven't noticed any sort of handling anomalies such as you mention. I did a very fast drive down the California coast highway, US 1, from Oregon to San Francisco on very tight and twisty turns at more than double the posted speed limit. The car handled flawlessly and was completely stable. I did wear out the OEM Bridgestone Potenza tires in front though. Shortly after I got the car I had a set of stiffer Hotchkiss anti-roll bars put on the front and rear.
@@videomaniac108 Sounds great Jim. What tires did you replace the OEs with? Did you replace them with the exact same size? I did hear the Hotchkiss bars are great. I am looking at getting Eibach front and rear sway bars based on the recommendation of my dealer’s service reps who do some racing.
@@jacksparrow5281 I put the Michelin PS4S 245/40R19-F, 275/35R19 R(OEM sizes) on and noticed that the ride is quieter and less harsh. I had to go up on the inflation pressures from the stock 32 psi all around to 43 psi - front and 46 psi - rear to get equal tread wear across the tires. The Michelins have great grip in the wet and dry and I estimate that I will get 30K miles on them easily, without tire rotation - which we can't do on this car with directional rotation tires and the staggered tire sizes. My only complaint with this tire is that because of the more flexible sidewalls the handling is a little more vague and less precise. I plan to go with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s for the next tire. Around the end of the year I'm planning on putting a set of Litespeed forged magnesium wheels, maybe in 20", on the car in a +1 setup. One nice thing that I like with the Michelin tires as compared with the Bridgestone tires is the use of Aramid fiber instead of steel belts, which makes each tire a few pounds lighter. The stiffer bars will make the ride more harsh, but the handling improvements are well worth it in my opinion.
Since this engine platform has been round almost m30 years..........Have they kept the Sequential Multi Port Fuel Injection and resisted the move to Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI)? I have read conflicting stories one says SMPI and the other specifically says Nissan Direct Injection. What version is correct.?
I have a 2019 370Z and the engine still has the sequential MFI system. The VR30DDTT that's in the Q60 redsport and upcoming 2022 Z has GDI. I prefer the port injection to GDI because of the valve carbon problem wit GDI engines.

My 08 G37 6 speed only has 64k on it. No mods except for Z1 motorsports cold intakes and rear differential bushings. Other than that it’s bone stock and I intend to keep it that way for the forceable future. Great engine!
I love my Q50 2014 with this VQ engine!! Super reliable! But not so great on gas mileage
love my 2013 g37, i feel yea on the gas mileage. still better on gas then my v8 monte carlo
I'm averaging 12mpg at the moment... highway driving isn't much better either
Yea my 15 q50 is a guzzler but it's ok im also not so easy on the pedal
I have a FX37s and I average 20.2
I have a 2015 Q50 RWD. Average 21.4 MPG on 93 octane.
Thanks for the nice overview. For the record my G37x did not come with variable exhaust timing. So, not all of these have this feature. Perhaps only G37 coupe does?
What year you have?
SR20VE had similar heads to this engine, so it wasn't exactly the first for Nissan, as he mentioned
The SR20VE has 2 cam profiles for each cam with different lift and duration, but these profiles were rigid, not infinitely variable.
Amazing video comparing VQs to other v6 engines.
What about the VG30DETT
I own. 2006 Infiniti M35x with 203K still runs like a champ only issue was crank shaft position sensor
I have a VQ37 in an Infiniti Q60S and it does not have oil loss issues.
I do change my oil every 3K miles so I am not sure if it would show
oil loss if I were to let it go
longer. Infiniti says the maximum mileage for oil changes is
5K miles.
Same with my q50s. No burning issues and I've yet to change my oil lol.
Oil loss issue is only common on pre 2012 nissans/Infiniti with the vq37vhr engines
I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with over 206,000 miles and I drive it like a TrackHawk.
I change my oil every 30.000 km. No oil loss or anything.
@@rjvincent8682 how many kms do you have on your VQ?
good job keeping it technical but interesting, dude!
Got a 2012 sedan not couple unfortunate lol but I love it so much most fun thing I’ve ever drove such a clean side profile
I miss my 370z. Best daily drivable sports car I've ever driven!
What vehicles are they in?? I have a 2017 Q70s
With such an engine. All you need to do is port polishing the cylinder head and get individual throttle bodies.
To improve atmospheric power
.... no
@@Dudeman9339 ok what do you need to do?
Just picked up a 12 370z Touring today!
The 3.0 nissan put in the mid 90s maximas was one of their best 6 cylinders they made
I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with over 206,000 miles and I drive it like a TrackHawk.
I agree, and that was the stepping stone for all other VQ engines. I sold my 2000 Maxima with 240,000 hard miles and it still purred like a kitten
1:13. forgot to edit out a tiny bit of a repeat
Anything on the vq38dd in the Nissan Frontier. Information ideas modifications? Thanks
Sold my VR30 for the vq37hr!!! Wish they kept making it 😢
The oem intake is designed so well the only intakes I believe that help are the stillen gen 3 style. People who put those “CAI” which in reality is a HAI don’t understand how intakes work. Only downside to the gen 3 style like it are almost always made of metal of course but no coating. Definitely need to wrap them up with heat resistant tape u.
Uh AdminTuning 3 inch intakes is better then the stillen ones and with the admin you don’t gotta wrap them up.
@@AQCE245 yeah true especially with the optional filters
@@sk8punk318 Allot of people don't understand that when you use 3inch intakes you gotta upgrade your throttle body to 70mm to take full advantage of the 3inch because keeping the stock TB is like trying to breath threw a small straw
@@AQCE245 It's really not that big of a deal
@@AQCE245 TB isn't the only thing you need to upgrade if you get 3" intakes. These noobs don't realize you need to do ported lower manifold. If the space for air remains the same from the inside of the engine, stretching it out from the intakes makes negligible gains
3:32 where was this shot this is amazing
Can i wait till 100k miles to change spark plugs on my G?
My 370Z has a Stillen Hen 3 long tube intake, a Fast Intentions true dual x-pipe exhaust and a dyno tune on a Dynojet chassis dyno. Running 94 octa in e gas, We got about 390 peak crank horsepower at 7200 rpm and a nearly flat torque curve across the whole rev range.
Make a last n/a engine beside the 3.0t a vhr42 with agresive cams
VQ30DE is what I have on 2001 Maxima.. Great engine. it was paired with RE4F04B Jatco auto Transmission. ahh the weak part is the Transmission. Should of got the Manual transmission.
Great channel you're offering 👍.
I'm not sure if there is one on your channel topic discussing the vq37vhr vs Toyota 2gr-fse in terms of performance and reliability. Thanks!
Are the blocks the same between manual and automatic transmission applications?
the elephant in the room is the 4.0l in the xterra, frontier etc. what are its possibilities?
Hello , i would like to know, is the fuel injection gasket from the VQ 37 fits to my VQ 35 2010
Super smart presentation.
My trans on my 2014 370 z started to buzz or hum slightly when I put it into drive or reverse until cars starts go move,I wanted to know what would cause this, after this started I changed the oil, there was a little gunk on the magnets, the screen was very clean ,car has 36000 on it
You can swap to the redsport 7AT - it has a much larger tq converter…. Otherwise - baby the 7AT
I’m sticking one of these in my 350z here soon
Does a 3.7 liter take a crazy amount of gas? In about to buy one but I’m so scared that I made a wrong decision bc of how big the engine is . A 3.7 liter shit how many times do you refill it in a week living in the city 😢😢😢
@Matt Bowen so how much gas usage are you expecting on the g37
John Medina I own a 2010 g37x and it’s a solid 18.5 mpg in 25-35 mph roads with stop signs and lights and on highway trips it can get up to 28-30 mpg
My 370z does around 21mpg
19-20 just like every v6 sedan I’ve owned
I average about 24 mpg in my 15 q50!
Is the Vr38 not the best v6 nissans ever made?
It’s in one vehicle.
I’m having a vvel issue with this motor… unable to get any throttle response… any idea on how to fix
I was thinking of putting a supercharger on my nissan 370z -at 7, up to how many hp can it hold without breaking the engine?
Z1 motorsports makes the best supercharger for the 370z, they have a few pullies for different boost. They will know exactly how much the auto can take and give you the experienced advice VS what this guy can offer. I would contact them if your serious.
my vq35 burns oil worse than my 2stroke quad it makes power like a 2 stoke though so a quart of oil a month may b worth it?
Oil catch can should help with the oil burning problem
@@samuelalpire7726 that would only change it from oil burning to oil consumption.
That's not a solution.
I must’ve got blessed with a good de. Virtually no oil consumption between changes and catch can doesn’t really have anything in it. Boosted too
When it comes down to choosing a type of turbo, what are the major differences?
I personaly woud’t turbocharged an open deck block. Bot it’s just me.
Can you tell us what year Models these different engines came out? So those of us who are thinking of purchasing one can know, what year to look for.
08-12 g37/370gt and 370z and probably others

@@videomaniac108 This is great information. Enjoy the car. thx
Get yourself a front swaybar. Best $150 you’ll ever spend
You’re too underrated
I gotta 07 m35 and I one day I wanna swap a vq37vhr in it and hopefully make it fast 🙏🏽
the exhaust cam does NOT have CVTC. it is a dumb cam. no adjustment whatsoever
do 2 UR GSE of lexus and VR38 next please
Is putting a g37 engine in a s14 a good idea?
Nah, I'd just LS swap it. You'd get more power for your money
Freshkiicks is putting one in his S15, full send it. don’t listen to the V8 lover do what you want to do bro 🙏🏾
I am putting the VQ37 in my S13. Cheap reliable power and more than doubles the power of the stock KA.
Very informative, thank you!
What’s the reason it doesn’t make 100hp per litre from factory then despite all the tech it has?
It’s Kind Of Rare To See A N/A Engine To Produce 100hp Per Liter.
Is that angine vq37hr direct injeacshen or inline?

What engine is in a g37 2009?
I like cars
Is this in m37 and q70?
Since this engine platform has been round almost m30 years..........Have they kept the Sequential Multi Port Fuel Injection and resisted the move to Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI)?
I have read conflicting stories one says SMPI and the other specifically says Nissan Direct Injection. What version is correct.?
sonis the car direct injection? i google it and it says no
I have a 2019 370Z and the engine still has the sequential MFI system. The VR30DDTT that's in the Q60 redsport and upcoming 2022 Z has GDI. I prefer the port injection to GDI because of the valve carbon problem wit GDI engines.
How much whp can the stock block hold without changing the internals with FI?
600 to 650whp is stock limits of reliability untouched
With a good tuner of course.
Ok would the transmission hold up with that power? Or Eventually upgrade internals would have come to play with this much power it wont last for long time With level 10 transmission?
How can you tell someone is a good tuner?
@@mr1989junior research, ask around on the 370z Facebook pages and the forums. Look for tuners with a good reputation

Yep my 02 altima made it to 180k miles before I had to write her off from an accident, ended up selling her and I think she's still on the road.
Great motors even if the early models burned some oil.
Can you also turbo str8 In???
