Hey all! I KNOW the video is long, but also that's kinda the point. I go into ALL the detail in this tutorial. This is my answer to over four years of modelmaking questions. This video doesn't just explain how to make a TUGS model; the methods within it can be used to make ANYTHING! Engines, rolling stock, stations, barges, Gordon's dome... They are UNIVERSAL! The reason it's 7 hours is because I'm essentially teaching you everything I know. The fundamentals, from the ground up. It's a long watch. But if you're willing to stick it out, I GUARANTEE it'll help a lot! And please, remember that I am not an "expert" of any sort. There are a MILLION ways to do this, and they are all correct! You can follow my directions to the letter, or, you can try TOTALLY new and experimental ideas! Up to you! Modify and experiment to your heart's content! My only request is that you be creative and HAVE FUN! Enjoy!!

Your amazing 🤩 David met me I swear would love it all he would be so proud of your model crafting had’ve if he was still here today he would love it he would be thrilled to see your creation
I started building models a while ago and found that gluing paper to the sides is a nice way to cover up the tape. I used that to make a large scale Thomas that runs on LEGO tracks. Although with them being smaller models, it might be easier to use the tape to cover them up.
Very clever idea, that could definitely smooth the thing out well! I do indeed find that tape is easier with the smallest bits, but for the bigger ones, paper or thin cardboard is the way to go imo!
As a artist I've always wanted to make tugs models and this is just the perfect tutorial! This is great for pretty much anything. Thanks for the help lemmy!

Awesome to hear! I totally get what you mean, the taper at the back is hands down one of the trickiest parts. Took me a long time to wrap my head around it! You should use hulls, plastic, fiberglass, brass, eye mechanisms, servos, clay & silicone molds to make gauge one versions of the screen accurate replicas of the radio controlled model boats.
I've already made quite a few replicas, actually! I haven't the patience or budget for fiberglass and brass though; cardboard accomplishes more or less a comparable look if you use it right. Eyes and heads work and everything! I've showed Bluenose off on a couple of occasions, and particularly at The Great British Train Show in Canada in 2022.
Oh my gosh thank you!!!!!!! Only you would go to the lengths to make a 7 hour long tutorial video and I've got to admire your passion for the craft and all the stuff you do to encourage others to make their own models!

Just finished the video, that was super entertaining! Makes me want to try my hand at cardboard modelling, but I think I'd better try and finish the million projects I've got started instead! Can't wait to see more from you, and those big tugs models at the end look really exciting!
im only at the hull chapter atm but holy hell the very fact that you told us what the general show measurements of the tugs hulls are, you opened up basically the ENTIRE tug cast being a sorta rular, aka opening up a way to fine scale measurements of basically everything in the show
I'm so glad you're finding it insightful! I put a lot of time into editing the graphics for the measurements section, glad to see it was well worth it! Lots of people ask about measurements, so I figured they'd be a welcome inclusion!
Damm I saw it was 7 hours and was like, WAIT LEMMY BEAT HIS STREAM TIMES??? But amazing work, once my model making station is complete I must do one of these
If anyone wants these I have extra model measurements for TWR scale tugs. 1.5 inches wide, 3.5 inches long: Davy Jones, coast guard, customs boat, port authority, shrimpers. Harbor tug extras: Deisel tug, possibly the yacht. 13 inches long, 3 inches wide: Hercules Liners: anywhere from 20 inches to 5 feet long, 6-8 inches wide
Perhaps another way you could remedy the head pin sticking up is to maybe pierce it through the bottom of the supper structure so that just the stick and not the structure of the paper clip is on the top, superb model either way!
This was really detailed, and had a lot of work put into the model, I don’t plan to make a tug boat, but I definitely plan to use some of your techniques for other projects I’m working on! Thank you for this video Lemmy!
Thank you! And that's excellent to hear! I was really hoping that people would apply these techniques far beyond just TUGS: glad to hear that you're considering that! Best of luck with your models, and you're very welcome for the vid!
This is INCREDIBLE! I’ve learned so much and I’ve already started applying that knowledge to Big Mickey and S.S. Roxstar models. This tutorial is so thorough and detailed it’s amazing. I bet it was a pain to edit though.
Thanks so much, I'm over the moon that you're already finding use in some of these techniques! I wish you best of luck with Big Mickey and Roxstar! I tried to make this tutorial as detailed as possible, glad you appreciate it! And yeah, it was a HUGE pain to edit, took FOREVER. Very worth it though to hear that it's helping!
Just finally finished watching the whole thing and W O W . You have no idea how much I like this, you've inspired me to take a spin on this. Well done, and thank you for all the effort you put in to show us this!
I'm soooo glad you enjoyed it, and that I could inspire you! Best of luck with all your future modelling endeavors, and you're so welcome, so glad I could help!
Would it be stupid to apply mod podge after 1 coat of paint? because I’m making an ERTL scale Johnny Cuba & I’ve so far only taped & painted the hull but I can still see tape marks through the paint
Lemmy your work is amazing both show scale and wooden railway scale. I always see custom tugs models but always assume I'm not skilled enough to make them but this looks like something I could throw my hand at. Just out of curiosity, do you think it would be possible to make the hull out of wood so it's water safe and then make the rest out of cardboard?? Either way I'm thoroughly impressed and I hope my attempt goes just as well.
Thanks so much, nice to hear you think so highly of my work! So glad that this video feels more accessible to you, I made it specifically with the intention of making it easier to follow and more manageable! You'll be surprised what you can really do once you start making these things! And yeah, you could totally make the hull out of wood, or any material for that matter. But personally, I'd just make the WHOLE thing in cardboard, and then spray the hull with flex seal or some other sealant to waterproof the outside. That's what I did on my show scale Bluenose, and it worked quite well! I find the model is more buoyant if, rather than being a solid block of wood, it's an empty cardboard shell with air inside. Best of luck, whatever method you choose!
One of the best tutorials I have seen for a long time! I'll be using this to help me build my TOMY Scale Ten Cents. Here's the real question though: how does one build Grampus in the TWR style? Would he be built like a figure or a tree, all blocky and stuff?
Hey lemmy i want to thank you for making this tutorial! It has been so helpful for me I've now made a take along scale zug and ten cents and thinking of making a harbour tug next!
Make Zebedee puffer and Lord stinker and may be a barge with The ability to put something tall and red on it and maybe make a set *casually describing how to make high tide*
Haha admittedly I am a little screwloose. And the way I see it, the whole point of my medium (cardboard) is that it's cheap, so the video that teaches it should be free! Plus it's not the 90s so I can't distribute these on grainy rental videotapes
Thank you! And for the TUGS series, I want everything to be consistent, so I will have those involved built in this TWR style. But I'd hold off on building anything for it until we do the official announcement. We'll explain it all there.
Watching through this once again, and I think that painters tape should be used for the masking processes during painting, generally it is less sticky so it would be ideal
Question how do the boats faces work because in the intro it shows briefly a warships insides and I was wondering if you are gonna show a full chart of that .
Only just found this, I'm looking forward to see how this goes and giving it a try myself. I was thinking about trying something like this so this is good inspiration.
On Big Mac, Zorran, Warrior, Zebedee, and Fire Tug, I'd make the hull shape identical to Top Hat and Zak. However the superstructures differ greatly between those seven, but the hulls are identical.
Welp, eventually I’m gonna *need* to make one of these, I also saw a few tricks that I might be able to use in the future. Excellent video! And keep up the great work!👍
OMG HOW DID I NOT RELISE THIS IS 7 HOURS I'VE BEEN SITTING HERE THINKING IT 15 MINUTES I'M ALMOST FINISHED WITH THE VIDEO XD but i come back with EXPIRENCE
I sincerely want to, but people have been asking me to do that for well over four years, and I've only just now released my first modelling tutorial. This thing took me three weeks straight to make, and required editing 21 hours of footage. So while I'd love to snap my fingers and have an engines tutorial, understandably I'm dragging my feet because I know it's going to use up 21 days of my life, and I reeeeeally don't like editing. I really hope I find the energy one day though. In the mean time, 90% of this video applies to engines, and I do try to explain some parts of the engine process in this, so you can watch this if you care enough haha
@@MasterOfTheLemons I understand what you mean lemmy but hopefully one day you can make it I’m not going to rush you take your time and have a good day.
@@MasterOfTheLemons and one more thing I love the work you do and it expires me to make my own like just today I just made a wooden railway scail zorran and it came out pretty good and I just want to thank you for explaining me to make and do my own work.
This is a great tutorial, I've been trying to build a Ten Cents model in a similar style but I'm making fit with Bachmann models, instead of wooden railway. I've been following your steps with the hull, but I was wondering with the stern for Ten Cents. Does his model have a slant at the stern as well?
Measurement suggestions if they can help Barges - 11 inches in length and 4 to 5 inches width Tramper (izzy gomez, old rusty, jhonny cuba) - 32 inches in length and 9.5 inches in width Hopefully these can help if anyone wants to try them out and see if they are the correct sizes/measurements
Im currently making one man! I just wanna give a huge thanks to you! I've been making scratch built models for awhile and I haven't found any in twr scale! So this definitely helped me out! BTW I watched your hole livestream about your twr series I'd really love to make some models for you! I've been getting quite the passion for customs during quarantine. And I hope you like my test model. If its alright with you I'll send you it to you through Gmail Thanks again for this great video! -Luke
I appreciate the huge thanks, and you're so welcome! I'm so glad this video is helpful! And I'm very much looking forward to seeing your test model! Gmail is perfect, I'll be checking it frequently for people's requests, yours included! I wish you the best of luck with your test model if you see it through!
Cool, good luck! But the scale in this video IS in scale with TWR models; Thomas's TVS model is ten inches and Ten Cents's model is 20 inches, so these boats really are just WAY bigger than trains. It's already in scale with Wooden Railway. Though I get the desire to shrink them; these might be in scale but no manufacturer would greenlight them being that big haha. Take Theodore for example; those guys should be twice the size to scale with the wooden trains, but that'd be way more expensive, especially when they barely interact with the trains anyway. Whatever scale you choose, I hope this video helps and wish you luck! Just had to put my 2 cents in about the scale lol
Hi, this comment is a comment I will eventually come back to. Thanks to this tutorial, I have the motivation to try this out and make some tugs! If i succeed, Ill definitely come back. If i don't, I still will and I'll eventually try again. Wish me luck. Edit 1: Gave up but as of now, september 30th 2024, ive been motivated again
Maybe they're technically harbor tugs in name, but when I said they were river tugs, I mean the shape of the models used on the show. Boomer, Bluenose, Old Man, and Sea Rogue all have the same hull, and it is WAY smaller than the harbor tugs. All four are 23.5 inches long. Also, Top Hat is a railway tug, and the Fire Tug is... Well, a fire tug. But they still have identical hulls to Big Mac, Warrior, Zorran, Zebedee, and Zak, who are all harbor tugs with 28 inch long hulls. That's what I mean when I say Old man and Boomer have river tug hulls.
Hey all! I KNOW the video is long, but also that's kinda the point. I go into ALL the detail in this tutorial. This is my answer to over four years of modelmaking questions. @@MasterOfTheLemons if only we had orthos for the tugs. Hint fucking hint, Sean O’Connor
NOW TAKE A NAP AND REST EASY
We will build great fleets
(Deep and relieved sigh) Thank you, Solmon.
For the mast, I’d say maybe try to make it more narrow as it goes up?
Welp, eventually I’m gonna *need* to make one of these, I also saw a few tricks that I might be able to use in the future. Excellent video! And keep up the great work!👍
The next three models you should make is Warrior Lord stinker and Billy Shupack
Sorry, master of the lemons do you have a cut on your hand
OMG HOW DID I NOT RELISE THIS IS 7 HOURS I'VE BEEN SITTING HERE THINKING IT 15 MINUTES I'M ALMOST FINISHED WITH THE VIDEO XD but i come back with
EXPIRENCE
Jesus this is long, worth it though
Haha my thinking exactly
Will you ever make a video on how you make your wooden custom build engins?
Best models EVER
Watched this while working on my ##justlikeawdry diorama. It was like we were working at the same time.
This is a great tutorial, I've been trying to build a Ten Cents model in a similar style but I'm making fit with Bachmann models, instead of wooden railway. I've been following your steps with the hull, but I was wondering with the stern for Ten Cents. Does his model have a slant at the stern as well?
Measurement suggestions if they can help
Barges - 11 inches in length and 4 to 5 inches width
Tramper (izzy gomez, old rusty, jhonny cuba) - 32 inches in length and 9.5 inches in width
Hopefully these can help if anyone wants to try them out and see if they are the correct sizes/measurements
This is nice
lemmy why must you release this before I have to record a podcast XD
Hahaha

What size do you think Coast Guard's hull is?
Wait how did you get top hats head to go up
I can imagine someone making the olympic class in TWR style using this as a guide
When i saw the video was 7 hours long I was like 🤯x10000
Im currently making one man!
I just wanna give a huge thanks to you!
I've been making scratch built models for awhile and I haven't found any in twr scale! So this definitely helped me out!
BTW I watched your hole livestream about your twr series I'd really love to make some models for you! I've been getting quite the passion for customs during quarantine. And I hope you like my test model.
If its alright with you I'll send you it to you through Gmail
Thanks again for this great video!
Can u make the duchess and princess alice and vienna but the supersturcture will be diffrent and the hull always same
Any printable tugs templates?
You know you should’ve premiered this video, would’ve been a better experience.
Thought about it, but I've never done a premiere before and my first time probably shouldn't be with something THIS huge hahaha
@@MasterOfTheLemons nah mate thats where you are wrong.
Personally I want to make all the Tugs in the show but at a smaller scale to fit more with the official TWR trains
1:05:09 isnt tighter the better?
If you're interested in hiring voices for your tugs series count me in since I'm pretty good at doing tugs impressions
Thanks Lemmy.
Now if only it’s waterproof so it can be placed on a trolley, and travel on the water.
❤❤❤❤❤
Why do some tugs have 1 bowrope and others have 2

Hi, this comment is a comment I will eventually come back to. Thanks to this tutorial, I have the motivation to try this out and make some tugs! If i succeed, Ill definitely come back. If i don't, I still will and I'll eventually try again. Wish me luck.

O.J CAMEO
Haha yes indeed
I just made mine out of Lego :/
So, has anyone watched this in one sitting? lol
twr zak
Old man and Boomer are harbour tugs.
