Can’t nobody out squall those Golden Age gospel singers from the 50’s and early 60’s! Archie Brownlee, Rev CL Franklin, Ruth Davis, Mavis Staples, Wilson Pickett, Aretha, and on and on!!! Those early ones were gut wrenching and in regards to Archie Brownlee damn near scary!! Albertina Walker, Bessie Griffin, Robert Blair, Inez Andrews, Joe Ligon, Ira Tucker, Mattie Harper, etc lord have mercy!
When Aretha and Joe Ligon sung I've Been In the Storm. Talk about squalls! A supercell thunderstorm had nothing on them with the effect of their voices.
Ladies and Gentleman, The Mother of Contemporary Gospel Music and The Queen of The Hammond B3, Dr. Twinkie Clark!! She may not have been the originator of the squall but she definitely revolutionized it for popular music. (Gospel and secular) along with The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.
Thanks for making this video....I had no idea that singer use growling & squalling as a tectic in the singing filed. I thought they did that because its apart of being a soul singer when i was younger. Your channel is defintely a head of its time. Thank you for sharing your channel with us Milik. I hope you can do a video essay on the late gospel legend Lashun Pace.
Great video and lesson as usual! For me Aretha's squalls and growling are my favorite. She had a knack for using them when it was called for. Like at the end of Never Grow Old when she sing the so glad part while facing the choir. Other singer over do it to me which is why I can't stand to listen to some gospel singers and some secular singers.
I dont really understand the growl anatomically but I feel like Kearen's or Beyonce's growl is really healthy, and they can growl for hours.... instead of Mariah's or Whitney's which sound kind of painful. I want to discover the difference because my goal in life as a singer is to growl as free as Beyonce does
I learned how to growl from Etta James and use it with ease but squalling is different. Anybody can explain the difference in tongue placement and or technique? I'd be very grateful
Thank you Milik for yet another interesting and informative video. As always, I learned a lot. Working on an essay about an R&B singer who judiciously employs the growling technique you describe here. Looking forward to your next video. Best wishes for continued success.
That has been my question for years. I would think yes if you are singing properly because Aretha, Karen, Twinkie etc all did it for years and the latter two are still doing it and have their voice.
I would like to know, is this technique harmful for the voice? I am learning by myself and since I always hear about how you must sing clean with an open throath otherwise you'll damage your voice, I'm curious about that. I am amazed with gospel singers, they have such beautiful and powerful voices ❤
Interesting lesson. But it’s the annointing. Karen telling Mattie Moss Clark “I gotta practice my growling and squalling today mama.’ 🤣 It’s the anointing.
Whew that Jennifer Holiday know how to put a chill down ya spine with hers! Frfr! She was going crazy with it when she sang the last song at Aretha Franklin’s funeral 🔥🔥🔥

YES it does. Growling not so much because you can (and should) use your diaphragm to support it. But the placement for squalling is in throat so no matter how much support you have it’s going to cause some ware and tear if you do it regularly. However, the “damage” it does varies from person to person, Fantasia been squalling whole life - hence her raspy singing voice - which some people would consider a sign of damage in itself, but she’s a very gifted singer.
@@midnitehour1 Oh That makes sense. Question: Can some people not growl? Cause I can't seem to growl at all lol. I can only squall in my mixed voice. But I can't figure out how to do the normal growl in my middle voice to at some grit and emphasis on some notes here and there.
Im not a huge fan of excessive growling. I feel like Whitney had a perfect balance. All the others on here sounds kinda monstrous. It also sounds damaging
I'm not a huge fan of growling either. Even when Aretha used it (especially in the later years) I didn't care for it. Squalling is fine. Melisma too. I absolutely love Patti but she overdoes almost everything she sings, sometimes completely ruining the melody of the song.
I was thinking the same thing. Whitney and Mariah weren't big growlers so the really should not have been mentioned, but Jennifer holliday made growling mainstream.

Just cause she’s a white girl that can do some runs, and growls doesn’t make her this vocal genius because if she was black she’d be just another forgotten vocalist.
I would say a number of things. For one working in the fields required for them to project their voice across a distance. Secondly, it’s no secret that black folks went through a lot toils, heartaches, and strife particularly in recent past time. Out of this pain emanated a holler and moan and groan eventually leading to a growl and squall! Thirdly, many blacks originating out of the southeastern parts of the US have native ancestry. Among the natives this squall/hollering originated 100’s of years I would say! Used in rituals, hunting, etc. That is a reason why the trait of squalling in singing and preaching is only distinct to Blacks in America with southern roots. If you notice some of the best hollerers and squallers experienced these contributing factors. If you look at the ancestry, features, and early life experiences of some like Inez Andrews, Tina Turner, Rev CL Franklin, etc you’ll better understand.
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 I did not say that many originate from. My words were many have native ancestry just like many have European ancestry! Well, if you watch Miss Knowles-Carter doing the growling/horn imitation during "baby boy" during the B-Day Experience, you will see the tongue is curved and neck is thick, similar to when growls in "I'm Going Down" on the current Renaissance tour. No matter how technically proficient an artist is (such as Beyonce and others in the video) this sound in particular is produced by tension period.

Whitney Houston too
I think Vanessa Bell Armstrong can sit with them.
