I don't understand one of your conclusions. In Colossians Paul still maintains the structural relationship between masters and slaves (he doesn't call for it to be abolished) but does command them to relate to one another differently as far as their disposition and attitudes. Why do you say his letter to Philemon is calling for the abolition of his status as a slave? Isn't the point in this letter and in Colossians that no matter your status in life we still have a responsibility to God? Is there any evidence that Philemon understood Pauls letter to be an appeal to free his slaves? If everyone acts like a Christian in whatever structure is in society doesn't that solve the problem anyway?
Isn't this just interpreting the Bible how you want to instead of what actually happened in the letter? With this same lens of viewing the Bible I could twist it to justify slavery as well like Americans in the Confederate south did. This letter wasn't about slavery but about the greater plot of being a missionary for Christ we just happen to have a slave as a character. Why rewrite the Bible with politics? This has nothing to do with slavery and definitely this letter isn't about race.
Jesus lead me here. I had never read Philemon before or even really heard it preached on. I am currently cultivating discipline through Christ Jesus to read my bible daily and wanted to start with chapters I hadn't read. Decided to watch a video to see what it was about before reading and now I am sitting here laughing at just how wonderful and glorious our Lord is in His gracious convictions. En route to forgiving someone now lol, will still read this book tonight. Thank you for the video!
I was awakened by a very bad dream this morning and found myself drowsily running my fingers in the pages of my Bible and then I saw this chapter. After reading the whole text, I knew that it meant something important more than what I just read. Now this video really helped me, and the message that it has is very relevant to my current situation. I feel blessed for I know that what just happened is the work God's Holy Spirit. May the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Thank your for reading my testimony, also sorry for my bad grammar.
Wow I never heard nor seen this letter broken down like this. Thank you for taking the time to study and present what God has given you. God bless you all!
My grandpa went to be with the Lord recently, it’s been a few weeks. Today the Lord lead me to this book. My grandpa’s name is Filemón (Philemon in Spanish). What a beautiful book. Holy Spirit gave me a revelation about the scripture that says “it seems you lost Onesimus for a little while so you have have him forever”. Gives me encouragement that I will see my grandpa again. 🤍 I love you Grandpa Filemón De La Torre 🤍 I will see you again.
No matter how young or old someone is and what kind of sin(s) they have committed, as long as they still draw, never too late to become a born again believer.
I’m making adjustments in life so that I can use an RV to travel the several thousand miles to park near each of my kids’ homes so I’m available to my grandkids and hopefully establish a loving relationship with each of them. I hope when I pass, they will have the same kind of love for me as you speak of for your Grandpa.
I love this, I read Philemon 3 times in the last week praying for revelation and understanding, and I did not pick up on ANY of this lol. I’m glad to have this RUclips channel as a resource
I love the practical application of this: if I have beef with another, look to Jesus's example, make the decision to place the other's wellbeing above my own. And in the process, "charge it to Jesus's account." When we feel slighted, taken advantage of, or wronged, we can choose to respond like Jesus, we can choose to love and forgive instead of demanding our pound of flesh.
Whenever he said that Koinonia meant sharing, it blew my mind. I was acting in a Christian musical called Camp Koinonia several years ago and I thought it was a made up word. It perfectly matches the theme of the story we acted out in the play. So cool!
Kpinonia is a very interesting word. It can imply a common effort. It can be translated as a union, and is even used in both pagan and Christian literature to describe the intimate union that is marriage. We share koinonia in the Church because we are intimately united as members of the Body of Christ whose head is Christ. And the Church, of which we are members, is the Bride of Christ.
I appreciate the Bible Project for creating such compelling videos with animation. A friend of mine who is an atheist finds these videos quite fascinating when I share them with him. We engage in quite a few conversations concerning Christian Theology and the biblical texts. ISAIAH 57 - PHILEMON “I have seen his ways, and will heal him; I will also lead him, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners.” (Isaiah 57:18) WORDS BY: JESUS "Philemon is a book about healing but healing of a different kind. It focuses on healing a soul rather than the physical. The heart of man is a lot harder to heal than the bondage on the body which is why it is important to understand the causes of spiritual sickness and the freedom found in true repentance. Bitterness, unforgiveness and hurts are spiritual cancers not only brining death to your body naturally, but cause major blockages in your spiritual growth, making you unable to progress. Such sicknesses pass from generations to generations and can last up to decades in a single person’s life. Many go to the grave like this without resolve. How do you heal from a lifetime of deep wounds? The cross. The cross was meant for such wounds as this, for every lash I received was a lash meant for your freedom. Freedom is found on your behalf, not the other person’s. You seek and you make the steps to do what it takes to make sure your heart is clean towards Onesimus. When you are faithful to this, you will be amazed at what your repentance can do in another’s life and the freedom it can bring them. Every time you hold grudges towards your brethren, you are enslaving them as Onesimus was a slave. But I want more for you. I want to restore comforts to you and your mourners. I no longer want to see brethren treating brethren as slaves to their sin. I am the God of healing and I want to heal broken relationships where you can receive even your enemies as beloved brethren. With a heart that is willing to let go and release, I can restore your body and soul from a lifetime of deep wounds; because when Isaiah prophesied by My stripes you are healed, you are healed indeed!"
We can't wait to study this in our small group later this week. Thank you for beautiful outline of what appears to be a simple letter but is truly the Gospel in action!
I just want to thank @The Bible Project - I'd been struggling to understand the relevance of Philemon for a long time. Your video explained the relevance and allegorical nature of the book and opened my eyes to why it was included. Thank you for the amazing work you guys do!

I totally enjoy these Bible Project videos. I teach a Bible study and have used these to help with understanding before diving into a survey study of a particular book.
Thanks a lot for this wonderfully scripted and animated video about the story of Paul, Philemon and Onesimus. May God bless and prosper you all. . .always.❤ Antipolo City, The Philippines
Thank you for the indepth illustrative presentation which has left an indelible mark about this small island of Crete and the lessons that emanate from this letter of Paul
I read this letter so many times yet I never saw it as more than "nice words" that Paul wrote to someone. Looking deeper into what is written can really shed more light on the biblical stories.
This is amazing. The artwork and drawings must've taken a long time. I really appreciate this because I am a visual learner and doesn't like to read. This is really intuitive and encourages me to dive into scriptures more deeply. Thank you!
What a special book... it's written for a very specific situation involving only 2 people, whereas Paul's other letters are addressed to whole churches but of course Paul still manages to pack in the gospel truth and lays out why reconciliation is needed even though the law and societal hierarchy at that time mandated something else. Onesimus must have been very special to Paul but also it's awesome to see God's love in and attention to the details of our lives.
You’re research, understanding and articulation of the books of the Bible is profound. Your artistic style makes it extremely easy for visual learners to retain the narrative. Excellent work!

So so so so thankful for these videos! I've started watching them before I read each book/chapter and it has deepened my Bible study more than anything else I've tried 😊
This is SO good. Many times we read (or half read) scripture and accept that it is intended to teach us something. So we pick out the parts we understand (perhaps!) and with which we are comfortable. Then we disregard the rest and the fact that it is intended for humans and describes human conditions which are familiar to us. In this case we have actual characters to consider so we are able to see the teaching in action and may be able to apply it to our own lives in 21st century. Thank you Blessings and peace to the videoe makers and to all who watch it
Thank you for this video! It helped me understand a lot! At first, I never even knew that Philemon was a book in the bible. I was going to read a new book today, but I didn't know what. Then I came across Philemon and I was initially unsure of reading that. It was only 1 chapter long and I was pinning more towards reading Galatians or 1 Peter. But the Holy Spirit led me to read it and later led me here. Now, watching animated videos isn't something I would initially do, but I was guided here. And because I read Philemon I was revealed a solution to my problems. The Holy Spirit doesn't always talk in a booming voice, but sometimes in small, subtle guidance. Philemon truly is a powerful book that holds a powerful message: Reflect Jesus in all that you do! Thank you and may God bless you! ❤
I really enjoyed this book. Very easy to pick up on the beauty unfolding-that is, human love from brother to the next through petition and camaraderie. ❤

A disciple passes from student to teacher. Go ye into all the world and teach the gospel. Making disciples not students. Excellent teaching brother.
Thank you guys so much for all you do!! I was struggling to understand why the letter to Philemon was included in scripture, now I know and it makes total sense.
I was struggling also. One of the shortest letters but difficult to follow at first. At least for me. I just finished reading it for the second time this week. Now i've watched the video to get some context. Now I will go back and read it again😊
Hahahaha, in the middle of the video I got the parallel of Jesus taking on our sins and Paul taking on Onesimus's debt. Indeed a beautiful picture that I never realized before. God bless you all for this amazing work! ❤❤🙏🏻
I think there is another embedded message in this letter. It’s a very loaded letter as you mentioned in the video. A revelation that was given to me while I was reading this one night in a Federal Prison in Safford AZ. It was one about freedom of choice. God is the original author of liberty after all. Paul says to Philemon, that he could be so bold as to command him to accept Onesemus back as a brother in Christ and as an equal, but it would be more “pleasing” to God if he were to just make the right “choice”. This brings me to the point of “choice”. I don’t put my faith in “man’s laws”. I really think abortion is a horrible thing, but as I stated before, I am not putting my faith in Man’s Laws. I think the choice should be there for the women to make the right choice. The right choice is obviously life but it is so much more pleasing to God when people make the right choice. We as a society need to do better. We spend so much money on wars and foreign policies, but we should be using that money to genuinely help mothers in need and we should be praising women for their sacrifice. It’s the most selfless thing a human can do aside from laying down their life for someone and it should be praised. If we focused on praising women for their selfless choice, I think we could save a lot more lives by encouraging women to make the right choice and not fearing the act of bringing new life into the world that’s directly tied to themselves.

I watched the illustration and just immediately read the book of Philemon. Let me start by saying that Paul is quite a character 😅. He was such a diplomat. At some point, I personally felt that Paul was guilt tripping Philemon into agreeing to forgive Onesimus. But, dang! I give it to Paul, he's so good with words. Because, whhhhaaaattttt??? 😅😂
I thought that too 😂, in verse 18-19 he says (paraphrasing), if Onesimus owes you anything, charge it to me and I'll repay and don't forget that YOU owe me your very self 😂
I had a friend asking about the Bible’s relationship to slavery just yesterday and this video autoplayed off of the Titus overview (which also talks about bondservants)! God always has timely answers for us.
this is now acc one of my favourite letters!!! . love it more now that I understand the meaning behind the letter. 😍❤️🙏🏾 This is the shortest book yet has one of the most deepest meaning.
Wonderful summary of the book of Philemon and the visual really makes it stick! All I can imagine is stilling my children Biblical bed time stories and listening to their questions and seeing their reaction.
I love this book because it shows us that none is better than the other you can be a house cleaner or the owner of a huge business in God's sight we are equal and it also shows us true forgiveness and brotherhood in Christ Jesus powerful text
This makes me think about the body and the mind. And how they are conflicted the body a slave for the mind. And through Christ our body can learn to forgive our minds for all the slavish sin we've done and the mind can look at the body not as a slave or tool or machine but as a brother. As a partner.
I think another important aspect of this letter is the obedience of Onesimus in going back to Philemon. Because he didn't have to, but it was the Christian thing to do. Acknowledge that by not subjecting yourself to the authority God has put you under, you are committing a sin.
thank you! I just read this and I felt that I didn't quite get it all, but I feel like you made this so clear without giving me hardy any opinion. great work, I appreciate all of you guys and your work.
Amen, thank you for that, putting a picture to it helps me so much. Very well done. I pray for this to be seen by many and also any and all of the work you do for the Lord. Peace to you.

If we focused on praising women for their selfless choice, I think we could save a lot more lives by encouraging women to make the right choice and not fearing the act of bringing new life into the world that’s directly tied to themselves.
Amen!
That Was Beautifully, Illustrated & Narrated!🙏

Superb. Thank you. Your resources, wisdom and insights have been a real blessing for me through my Ordination training. Thank you
Beautiful animations and explanations. It is a blessed message!
Thank you for being a salt and light in this world through your gifts! May God bless you more! ❤
😂😂
I thought that too 😂, in verse 18-19 he says (paraphrasing), if Onesimus owes you anything, charge it to me and I'll repay and don't forget that YOU owe me your very self 😂
I can see it too! Paul was comfortable giving directives like when he TELLS Philemon to prepare a room because he is coming. He doesn’t ask 😅
This is excellent! God bless this work. This makes things so clear, thank you for your videos. Best regards from Brazil
I had a friend asking about the Bible’s relationship to slavery just yesterday and this video autoplayed off of the Titus overview (which also talks about bondservants)! God always has timely answers for us.
Thank you so much for the passion, brilliance, hard work, and beauty you bring to this videos. xo
And somehow this very important message has been set aside in many churches today.
God bless you brothers, thank you for these wonderful videos.
Yall are incredible. Thank God for what He's doing through your gift. Thank you for showing up so powerfully 🙏
Wow! Thank you for using your, extraordinary, gift to share the Word!
this is what it means to be BROTHERS AND SISTERS💯
this is now acc one of my favourite letters!!! . love it more now that I understand the meaning behind the letter. 😍❤️🙏🏾
This is the shortest book yet has one of the most deepest meaning.
This was beautiful. I'm starting to dig this 'Paul' guy. He was a lot smarter than I remember. Thanks again.
I've been a Jonah for years without realizing it but I absolutely love this story about forgiveness. Thank you for doing it video!
Wonderful summary of the book of Philemon and the visual really makes it stick! All I can imagine is stilling my children Biblical bed time stories and listening to their questions and seeing their reaction.
God bless you and your ministry.
I love the details. These videos are so fun to watch. Like Epaphras saying "Yo!" 😂 Bible Project makes my nightly reading time so enjoyable
I love this book because it shows us that none is better than the other you can be a house cleaner or the owner of a huge business in God's sight we are equal and it also shows us true forgiveness and brotherhood in Christ Jesus powerful text
This was awesome, Thank You for sharing 🙌🏼
Amen!! ❣️ Thank you for these over views and May God Bless you Always ❣️😇❣️✝️🙏🏾🛐🙏🏻💖🤗
This is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for taking the time to do this work.
This was so awesome that I looked at it over and over. I got it! A very powerful message.🙏🏽
This makes me think about the body and the mind. And how they are conflicted the body a slave for the mind. And through Christ our body can learn to forgive our minds for all the slavish sin we've done and the mind can look at the body not as a slave or tool or machine but as a brother. As a partner.
BLESS. U. This is told very well. Thank you. Courage, integrity and endurance victory.
I'm in amazement, this is the very FIRST TIME, I'm seeing the book of Philemon in such an amazing way, WOW.
Such a beautiful breakdown of this book! WONDERFUL!!! GOD BE PRAISED! GOD BLESS YOU ABUNDANTLY!!!
I think another important aspect of this letter is the obedience of Onesimus in going back to Philemon. Because he didn't have to, but it was the Christian thing to do. Acknowledge that by not subjecting yourself to the authority God has put you under, you are committing a sin.
Your videos are very helpful. Thank you
thank you! I just read this and I felt that I didn't quite get it all, but I feel like you made this so clear without giving me hardy any opinion. great work, I appreciate all of you guys and your work.

Ya, that is a big one. It actually it is all the same for us. We have all sinned; yet Christ welcomes us back "home" when we're called.
