Arko Shaving Stick and a 1928 Gillette Safety Razor

  • I've been hearing good things about the Arko shaving stick for years and I finally got my hands on one. Let's see how this old school shaving stick works and how well it lathers. I also give some fairly unambiguous opinions about the scent of these shave sticks!
The razor I'm using is the little brother to the 1921 Gillette New Improved, and this one is the same model, but made in 1928. I start off with a vintage Gillette Blue Blade razor blade but quickly realize that it hasn't aged well...

I just ordered some more Arko tonight! I actually love the smell, it reminds me of those little motel soaps from family road trips when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's. It's too strong for my wife though, so I have to keep it sealed in a Ziploc bag. Sometimes I'll open the bag for a couple seconds just to smell it.

Yay you finally got Arko! Welcome to the club! Sorry that you dont like the scent, its one of those scents you either love or you hate, but you few people disagree that its one of the best performing soaps for the price out there! The smell disapates after 3-4 weeks, just give it time. Mines aired out for a month or so and now it just smells like ivory soap. One stick will last you a long time! Arko is an extremely fool proof soap to use especially for new wet shavers, possibly even easier than creams, at least for me.

    Arko is the soap ever.
The smell fades away in about two weeks if you just leave it outside.
I use it as my preshave by rubbing it on my face and then leave it until I make my leather from another Arko stick that I pressed in an old shaving soap bowl.
I use a well used Omega professional brush.
The lather is much superior to all the dozens of soaps that I have in my closet.
The only downside is it’s price.
Yes. Because it’s cheap people think that is not good.
Actually I have a lot of expensive soaps and none is better than Arko.

Hello from Antalya Turkey. Great Arko shave. I use Arko quite a lot. What I do is grate the sticks up with a cheese grater and push the mix down in a plastic bowl to make a puk. I load my brush up on the puk and bowl lather. To change the scent I add a few drops of essential oils and a few drops of pure glycerine and it make a great voluminous lather. By the way I like the original scent.

I’m weird. (Shocker 🤪) I like the smell of citronella. It reminds me of camping when I was a small boy.
The “Mad scientist of shaving” did a video using an antique Gillette blue blade (I think older than yours but the theory still applies) that those blades were made before the special coatings they put on the blades was created to make them smoother and sharper and todays blades are also made on computer assisted machinery which also gets the blades sharper. That might be it.

Great video as always, brother ! I've never had great luck with Blue Blades, even NOS ones, still wrapped. I think we are spoiled by the great selection of modern double edge blades that are out there now. Just a suggestion, whenever I buy a vintage razor, after cleaning it thoroughly with a soft toothbrush and antibacterial Dawn dish liquid, I soak it in Barbicide (properly diluted as per their directions) for at least half an hour. I do the same with vintage injector blades (after I remove them from the case, of course), as vintage Schick blades are almost always, still very sharp, and perform well ! Take care,,,,

Been looking for an Improved, but haven't found anything nice looking cheap enough. I did just finish a handle on a really nice Old Type with a handle crack that wouldn't repair, so I fit a piece of brass tubing that I nickled myself. It's a great shaving old razor - rivals my best Techs and '48 Super Speed - guaranteed 12 hour smooth shave!
Despite hearing the Arko Bashing throughout the internet, I decided to try some anyway. It does lather like crazy & gives a great shave. While you're too polite to describe the actual 'scent', I'm not: ... it smells like Urinal Cake ...
It was just a little too intense, even though it does smell much more citrus-y when wet. My solution was to grate equal parts of Arko and Williams puck soap. I also added just a pinch of Yardley charcoal soap with bentonite. Mixed together it looks like granite. It also smells much better, yet still lathers & cushions like crazy. Worth keeping, and much improved when mixed with Williams & used like a puck.

Good day, sir. Love the video; it's nice to see someone having fun and trying new things. That razor you used is a beauty. I have yet to try a 20s razor. Very brave of you to use the Feather blade. I just had a shave with a new acquisition of mine, a 1950s Rocket. It's the second time I have used it and boy, is it a beautiful shave? You bet it is!. I used Palmolive shaving cream which comes in a tube over here in the UK. It's really creamy - one small dollop in my lathering bowl and I had enough lather for 6 passes! I will have to go easier next time. Finished off with Paco Rabanne pour homme, so now my front room is smelling very nice indeed as I sit and type. We can't buy Arko in the shops over here so I think I will order some from Amazon and try it out. Keep making the videos please!

Thanks for the great comment! I’ve never heard of a Rocket razor before. Now I’m intrigued. I might need to check out the Palmolive. People in the UK also talk of Nivea being common over there. It seems that Arko can only be obtained online unless you live in Turkey. Anyway, cheers!

Please look up the rocket. They came in flare tip and parat. The parats were made in England and Germany. The parats' knob is flush with the handle when opened and closed. The rocket flare tip does exactly what it says on the tin; it flares out from the handle. Their proper name is Super Speed but everyone calls them rockets. They were the Gillette razors buy before the Fatboy and Slim were manufactured. Here, have a look at this link and it should explain what I am rambling on about. www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/the-difference-between-a-flare-tip-superspeed-and-a-rocket.145466/ Yes, I always buy Nivea; it is very easy to get over here and I use it almost every day, especially the balm. You might also like to try Ingram's shaving cream - it is very menthol and is great for a morning shave and also easily available in the UK. Here is a link for the parat. Enjoy :) cavemangym.wordpress.com/2016/10/29/vintage-gear-exploration-british-gillette-rocket-parat/ Cheers, mate!

Tetanus shots are in the arm the stomach shots were the OLD rabies shots. Don’t worry about the rust because it’s only iron oxide but tetanus germs can live where rust happens.

@SinatraLennon the blades tugging are equal to what the van der hagen blades do. they both tug. the feather blades seem like they would slice right through coarse rough facial hair

Mr. Sinatralennon, thank you for posting this review on ARKO. I was recently thinking about trying it, but I can't go with a bad smelling soap. Lol I still might try it cause it's cheap. I would like you to know that I'll be trying a Feather blade for the first time very soon. In my years of wet shaving I have yet to try one. So I'll like to give you my thoughts on Feather blades, just as soon as I shave with one. Great vid man💈

Those old blade cases are really cool. I have a similar one from Schick from about the same era that I got with a Schick Krona I bought off of eBay. These ones were actually still very sharp however, probably due to still being sealed in the original packaging. The Krona is a great razor as well, check one out sometime. They're plentiful and cheap on eBay.

arko stick is mostly used by pressing the shaving cup. Use it with derby premium razor(krom-seramic-platinum-tungsten and polimer).. it is the best combination. why any baby face youtuber didn't mentioned it?

Great Video My Brother!!! I am glad you switched out that old Blue Blade... It was making me nervous just watching you...
Stomach shots for tetanus??? I don't know about that... BUT I grew up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, so we were told that it was stomach shots and lots of them if you got bit by a rabid animal. So, If a wild animal was acting odd and getting to close or foaming at the mouth. it was shoot 1st asked questions later. Better to be safe than sorry when hunting in these mountains.
    Shave On My Brother!!!
