ROLAND JAZZ CHORUS JC120
First introduced way back in 1975, the JC-120 Jazz Chorus is one of the few guitar amps that can truly be called a legend. Roland’s long-standing flagship is universally recognized by pros as the benchmark in clean guitar sound, and its rich tone and famous built-in stereo chorus effect have been heard on countless popular songs over its long history. The JC-120 remains the undisputed “king of clean,” and the enduring choice of serious guitarists everywhere. Legendary flagship of the Roland Jazz Chorus series since 1975
Historic “JC clean” tone and signature Dimensional Space Chorus effect
Powerful 120-watt stereo amp with two 12-inch “silver cone” speakers
Two input channels (Normal and Effect), each with three-band EQ and bright on/off
Built-in vibrato, distortion, and authentic spring reverb
Footswitch jacks for turning onboard effects on/off while performing
Stereo effects loop for connecting external effects
From the beginning, the JC-120 was designed to be the best clean amp ever made. Forty years on, its pure, transparent tonal signature-supported by an integrated stereo amplification system and custom 12-inch speakers-still remains unsurpassed in the guitar world. While other amps have come and gone, the iconic JC clean sound has stood the test of time, relied on by creative players in all genres of music over four decades.
The Original Stereo Chorus Effect
Along with its unique clean tone, the JC-120 is equally revered for its impressive Dimensional Space Chorus effect. While commonplace today, the chorus effect was actually first introduced to the world as part of this very amplifier. Operating in true stereo, the JC-120’s chorus still provides a tonal experience like no other, filling the stage with amazingly lush, immersive sound.
Great with Pedals, Multi-Effects, and Amp Modelers
No matter what style you play, the JC-120 has the flexibility and power to deliver the tone you need. It’s an ideal platform for shaping sound with stompbox pedals, and it’s also great with multi-effects, amp modelers, and guitar synths.
2x12 120-watt stereo combo amp
El Jazz Chorus JC-120, único amplificador legendario en su tipo que, aún siendo de transistores, tiene el respeto de los oídos más exigentes.

Common forum wisdom, usually wrong, says the Jc120 doesn’t take dirt pedals well. These all sound great. Yet another reason people should ignore forums.
I’m currently running a Klon clone, Rat, and Russian Muff as my dirts into my JC. All three sound fantastic and every other pedal I’ve tried through it all sound great.
On the contrary what brought me here was forums saying this was the best platform when i went searching for tube answers. I like setting the amp super clean with an always on pedal for that edge of breakup and then a stack for the real drive sounds. I like how the modulation is included.
My Roland Jazz Chorus 40 takes all dirt pedals wonderfully! And I have a lot.
My jc 120 also takes Pedale very well
I find they’re not always reliable like people saying emg hz is terrible and chaos ridden years is a good example but some of alexi’s cheaper signatures don’t have the gain boost but still sound like his tone even when you don’t have his fingers
That clean chorus... Instant Purple rain. Awesome. ❤️
Metallica - one 👍
It's so refreshing when a demo involving a guitar, has a guitar that's actually in tune and the player has good intonation. Thank you.
Thank you!
I've got an older model from the '80s that's still my go-to amp for everything. I've owned it for 15+ years and never had a problem with it. Best solid state amp I've ever owned.
I picked up a 1978 jc120 for 300$ and I didn't think it was possible to be blown away by an amp I searched videos as I waited to go pick it up and to my absolute amazement I heard things in my guitar I've never heard before hands down one of the greatest amps ever made........
Played one a couple days ago and was blown away by the amps clean, reverb and chorus.
Probably one of my favorites cleans now . The slight gain on channel 2 is amazing.
once you hear Roland clean, no other amp really sounds clean after that. pillow soft headroom and chime and nothing harsh.
Love this amp..I actually recently found a JC-77 for free, and not working. Looks like when the fuse blew, someone replaced it with a new one. But twisting the back to take out the fuse…the wires inside snapped off going to the power switch. So I soldered it back on an Bam! It works great now!
Found it on birthday of all days! But I’ve been looking at one for years. I’ve had Marshall 800,900 and 2000 stacks, vox ect. But this amp fits best for me. Awesome for Cure,Smiths,Joy Division 80s type tones. As well as 90s grunge and such. On its own it’s a brilliant chorus if left moderate you could use the entire set. Makes it thick and lush! When clean I love running Tech 21 pedals throw it! I have a blonde tech 21 that emulates old fenders. It really pairs well as a DI amp, such a clean sound. Hell all of Use You Illusion and Appetite for Guns N’ Roses clean guitars…you guessed were this amp clean with the chorus…think Dont Cry and the rest. Has a very distinct tone, but also takes effects the best. Honestly one of the best versatile amps for studio and live imo. It all gets mic anyway, so a huge amp means not much.
I own one and a few tube amps. But if I want to stack a bunch of pedals?
This is the amp I use.
Very sensitive and effective eq.
Stereo FX loop.
Killer built in chorus and spring reverb.
No complaints.
Forgot built-in tremolo too❗🤘🤪
This is the perfect amp for pedals. Slaps some Boss/Roland pedals on there 🤘
Well, this video changed my mind on the next amp I am going to buy. I knew this amp was great but after hearing this, I see that it will far out perform the amp I was looking to buy.
So did you get it? If so, how is it?
It took a while to pull the trigger, but my JC 40 just showed up yesterday. It's a little bit smaller but believe me it's got plenty of power and does everything that the jc-120 does. And since I'm not really playing out in a band in big clubs it doesn't matter for me. I was in a band back in the late 80s, I played the bass, but our guitar player had a JC 120. And it was awesome so I knew that that was the type of amp, the sound that I wanted!
Try using overdrive pedal through the distortion channel slightly distorted, I think it will sound vastly fuller. At least that's how my pedals work best through a solid state amp
Sin exagerar, el mejor vídeo en RUclips de éste Amp... Suena brutal!
Proud owner of two JC-120's❗
Yes, old from 77 and new from today, both a dream
what determines using different mics in different positions is it to match something as there’s a significantly different sound coming out of each speaker obviously
Thanks for comment
The clean channel on the Boss Katana amps is based on the JC 120.
Great amp
I wish you turned the gain up on the klon
Had a JC 77 since mid 80's. Cleanest amp ever, it sparkles, absolutely the best amp for pedals platform. That's what it was made for- Boss pedals, if you have dirt in the preamp of the amp anything other than OD/Dist will sound horrible. Modulation, delay reverb must be in the fx loop. That's why the Jazz Chorus series are made to accept all pedals!!!!!
Yes Sir.
Men at work uses it as their main amp and they have great 80s guitar tone. They also use many pedals through it.
Thanks for comment!
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio no problem.
Great sounding amp
Great clean platform … not tube but super 80’s clean. That chorus? Awesome. The reverb on my amp … not great.
But the clean with the chorus. Heaven.
Dirt?
Nah. I wish. I love my JC 77 … so nice. Just wish I could find a good overdriven tone with this amp. Would to take it in a jam.
I just spotted one of these in a pawn shop in Atlacomulco, Mexico. I couldn't believe my eyes... LOL
Great playing man, I have the same amp except it’s late 80s, favorite amp
I like the JC's distortion. It's interesting that the clean boost sounds a lot like the distortion effect.
Really? It’s the first time i heard someone liked it. Everytime i turn it on i think it sound weird. I ve a 1982.
@@acecometThe modern JC's have an improved distortion circuit that sounds more like one of their Boss pedals.

Curious about how this beast is built. The edging and rivets look like metal but are they all plastic? Housing built from MDF instead of plywood? I see where comments were made that the 50th anniversary edition is just a cheap veneer. Not trying to bash the amp, just looking at ways to make it build it special. Thinking about buying new but another approach is to buy used and swap any mdf for plywood with a real veneer or even hardwood. Amp sounds great as is, maybe just use it and enjoy the thing. Torn between the 120 and a 40. The 40 is probably all I need but a good smooth bass push would be cool.
Thanks for comment
What songs were you playing in the vibrato and distortion sections of the video?
Also, i own a JC22. Little ass thing in comparison to the 120 but damn does it sound good. And it's so loud, it's a brilliant amp. I thought about replacing it for a valve amp to get better gain and distortion but i can't give this clean and chorus tone away, it's too good, just too good
Don't replace it or you'll regret it...
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio Actually i was thinking of replacing it, for a vintage JC-50. Cause the JC-50 has the vibrato and the distortion on top of the chorus and reverb and it has more power. Could you also tell me what song you where playing at 0:45?
Punky Brewster!
Great amp. I sold it because it was so heavy. I use quilter heads because I can get that loud clean that I fell in love with from the jazz chorus.
Instant Purple Rain
I have a 1982 version of jc120 and i ve notice the 1st channel (low) is way better for distortion/ overdrive pedals. Second channel suit better for clean and chorus.
Thank for the info!
Do you think this amp would be ok for metal? I mean, it sounds amazing clean but I like metal too so I want an amp that is versatile
Hola Manuel. No hay reglas escritas aunque comúnmente no es el amplificador más utilizado para esos estilos. Fíate de tu oído y pruébalo por ti mismo si es posible. Si te gusta, adelante!
All of your distortion would need to come from pedals, but in my experience, pedals sound great through this amp.
Metallica uses them
Indeed they are...🤘😁 🎼🎶🎸🎶🎼
I read they use them for their cleans.
I use a tube screamer with a tele gold foil and dial it in! Great amp!
Yeah!
Has anyone tried an MXR EVH 5150 Pedal with any of the Roland JC amps?
Hola Alberto, qué buen video...y qué tal suena este ampli si conectas varios pedales en cadena???
Gracias vicente. Suena estupendamente.
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio Muchas gracias!! Espero pronto tener mi JC. Ojalá continúes realizando estos videos
Hard too find .. Great for solid state 💫 OCD !
Thanks for comment!
Saludos
I heard the chorus on one of these is fixed is that true? Or can you adjust depth and speed
That's true.
You can adjust it.
The 'Speed' & 'Depth' controls are right on the front over by the Power switch.
@@wakjob961 not for the chorus
@@wakjob961 that only works on the vibrato
I've been playing guitar for over 35 years, worked in music retail from '97-'11. Never heard the term "takes pedals well"" regarding amps Until 2022. What the heck are you guys talking about???
Thanks so much for this
What Mic's are you using?
Beyerdynamic M88 and Shure SM7b
Is there a way of telling their manufacture date ?
Try with “serial number decoder”
Alberto Martinez Del Rio Thanks. Is that on the Roland webpage ?
I think this was in 2015 together with JC40,
NAMM 2015.
Hi. Whats the year of your amp? Thanks
Hi. 2007 aprox
What is the first song they are playing?
don't dream its over
This is how a amp test should bee no talking
Thank you
Plus he’s playing stuff that really lets you hear the tone, resonance of the chords, strike of the strings, etc, not just playing fast solos to try and impress.
What year is this amp?
Circa 2008 but i’m not sure. Made in Japan
how did you get the hiss out of the recording?
Thanks for comment. Nothing at all ... the famous "hiss" has never seemed a problem when recording or using it live ...I checked the recording project in case I had done anything special but nothing ... A little Hp filter and a touch of LA-2A ... Nothing more!
@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio ok gotcha, also I just figured out you can do a cable jumper between the channels idk if you’ve done that yet, but get a patch cable and input them between the channels and you can get a deeper detailed tone
I never tried that option, but it sounds interesting ... Thanks
This amp is *by far* the cleanest and clearest amp I've ever played, and I love it for that...but it *really* didn't like my dirt pedals...and unfortunately I'm a tone snob for distortion
Ever find a workaround? I can get ok tones but it really misses the punch when I turn up the volume
The amp totally favors certain dirt/overdrives over others. When you find the right one, you'll feel it immediately.
Your opinion is irrelevant
Well I made the switch, got a jvm205 and my god I finally understand why everyone is so one sided to tube amps. Holy fuck lol
@@illuin__ It's easy to get good tones on tube amps. It's hard to with solid state. But it's more worth it for me. Because of the cost haha
Love my jc120 of the 80s. Once you try one , you then know its the best amp ever
I habe habe an Olaf and a New one, both are great, but the New is awsome
Thanks for comment
Is the distortion channel basically a ds-1 circuit?
No... at least it does not sound like a ds-1 at all
The tubes screamer and OCD doesn’t sound half bad
👍🏻
0:46 sounds like uta wo utaeba from motfd lol
Thanks for comment.

Its not as good as the Carlsbro Stingray Super, but it is a classic for sure. Better than the Fender Frontman or even the Vermona Regent.
Thanks for the info
Not that the video is about you showing off your guitar playing skills. It's about the amplifier I understand that. But towards the end when you crank the amp all the way up, you never even really played anything just one chord. It wasn't even loud, so I don't think that that was fair to the amplifier!
Thank you. It was fair for my neighbours!
