Thank you so much for this video! You've saved me a lot of money. I ordered the replacement brush kit from you last weekend, they arrived today. 5 days shipping to USA. All in all, it took about 30 minutes from removing the regulator to re-installing and we didn't even have to take the alternator off to do it (Pontiac Aztek). The only hitch we had was threading the new brush wires through the holes. So my father soldered a wire to the end and it went right through. Thanks again, you rock!

Hi, I have a 1999 C230 Mercedes with a Valeo alternator but I haven't been able to find the brushes. Just was wondering if where you found the brushes for yours if they would have mine. Would greatly appreciate any info. Thank you.
My alternator died and I took it totally apart this evening for a nosey inside. Brushes are fine, so are the windings, and everything seems to have continuity in the right places, as far as I can tell. The cables going to the car/battery are also good. It might be the regulator itself, or a diode or something. Or it just might have wanted to be taken apart and put back together again. Maybe one of the brushes was sticking or something. I'll throw it back on the car tomorrow and see if it works. Great video..
Thanks Mark, I've just followed your video and changed the brushes on the alternator in my Renault scenic. the alternator is working fine now and the battery warning light has gone out.
If the top slip ring is shot on these alternators you can slide a piece of 15mm copper plumbing tube over it and solder it on.youl need to file it slightly inside for it to slide over, did mine 4 years ago and its still fine. Saved a lot of agro and money
Extremely helpful, well-explained video - I haven't yet removed my alternator, which I was planning on replacing. But now I will instead check the brushes first, which I hope are the problem, especially as my car has done 220,000 miles and the brushes are hopefully worn out and the cause of my battery not charging! Thanks
Thank goodness I found your vid as i have been trying to desolder the whole top to get the brushes out, now i know I just cut them off smooth,,,,cheers.,,,,oh & to hold the brushes in place when soldering it is easier to put the brushes in place & then replace the plastic cap & then jam the brushes up against it with a bit of card, I also marked the old brushes before taking them out so I knew how much of the brush had to go in its holder in its relaxed position, I hope that makes sense !.
I can attest that following the steps in this video resolved MY problem. I bought replacement brushes and replaced them myself as seen in this video. The solder in the alternator requires 450*C to melt and not 400*C as I had thought. It requires quite a bit of heat to get it dome.
Thank you! I just replaced my wife's alternator and saved about $600 v.s. the dealer quote, she needed a no-nonsense quick repair so diagnosis was out of the question beyond replace it. But I kept the old one, took the brushes off and it looks exactly like how you have in your video, one brush not contacting the exciter coil. So I'm off to buy replacement brushes! My 1997 taco is only charging to about 12v, perhaps the diodes are bad on that one? I have a little more leeway with my truck though, I can wrench on it all I want. =)

This saved me a lot of money and I am also a big DIY'er. Thank you for posting this fix!

Advice on top of this: For the soldering of the brushes, use a quality leaded solder from a good brand such as Kester or MG Chemicals (the latter is generally a bit more affordable in the US in my experience - not sure about what's available in other countries). Low quality solder, and also lead-free solder, tends to be brittle and will be more likely to develop a connection issue. Not all solder is the same. Low-quality lead-free solder is the worst. Lead is malleable and helps keep solder joints in good condition when there is some vibration. Don't eat it and don't breathe too much of the fumes from the soldering in and it won't be an issue.
Hallo, haben sie den regler auch erneuert? Oder nur die kohlebürsten erneuert? Habe auch eine delphi die wassergekühlt ist. Bei mir kann man seperat die bürsten vom regler wechseln. Sind getrennt von einander. Danke
Did this today on my damm vanne , but without taking the alternator off , it would be much easier on the bench , this guy,s right , high tin solder used in manufacture , so a good hot soldering iron is essential , but used with quick dabs it can be done , avoid bare flamed devices , dead right to cut out the section at the top of the slip ring cap , as it,s a complete bloody nuisance at reassembly , ( the bit inside the cap with the 2 square brush holes in it) . The leads off the brushes can be LIGHTLY clamped against the outside of the brush box with a small set of mole grips , while you solder the leads to contacts , get the longest lead - ed brushes you can , as poking the leads out through the top of the brush box is a fiddle , with the springs on the leads above the brushes , twisting the leads gently up together like a miniature bit of rope helps stiffen them to get them through the hole . Excellent advice from an obviously professional guy . Respect , & Thanks .
Hello mate, Regulators dont really give any trouble in these types. If you are certain that the alternator is the problem i would sugest checking the continuity of the rotor, just between the sliprings. If rotor is ok it becomes complicated then, but i would give another go to the positive wire that goes from the battery to the alternator. Just double check it. Hope this helps :D.
Thanks for the post, I needed an alternator so I just bought a new one but after seeing this I might inspect the old one, order brushes and return the new one!
@@ken355555 Did you buy that. I know it's been 2 years but you can find them on e-bay for half that price, at least here in the U.S. and they are original Valeo not Chinese junk.
@@wernerdanler2742 I have a 1999 C230 Mercedes with a Valeo alternator but I havent been able to find the brushes anywhere. Would you happen to be able to let me know where I could find them? Ive looked everywhere and have been told you can't buy the brushes. Thank you in advanced.
@@kimsikorski5691 Hi Kim. I did not see the brushes separate from the voltage regulator. They are soldered in. I thought about going to a alternator/starter rebuilder to see about getting brushes that were the same size but went ahead and got the voltage regulator. That cost me $129 + shipping. Ended up not fixing the alternator so it was a waste of money. If you replace the regulator or even just the brushes and find it still does not work you will kick yourself for wasting the time and money on it. These things are non-returnable. I went through 2 rebuilt alternators before finding a good one. This has happened to me before when buying rebuilt ones. I spent a total of $330 on this. I could have gotten a new Valeo alternator for $235. I'll never go for the "simple" solution of volt regulator or brushes again. I ended up taking the alternator off and on 5 times and my car was down over a month. One thing I do not know is if the Valeo can be replaced with a Bosch. My original Valeo had two tags on it that said Bosch. You can get a new Bosch a lot cheaper. I guess you can contact Mercedes-Benz and see if they can tell you. Hope this helps at least a little. Addendum: I just re-watched this video and in the description he gives a link to get the brushes. See if you can still get them there.
I recommend to use cylindrical grinder to modify new brushes to follow the shape of a rotor. Otherwise, plastic holder tend to snap due to leverage force (excessive resistance/tripping) passed from rotor's side. Btw, great video. I respect repairs of things that can be repaired. With a little effort - from 50$ for the cost of whole regulator to 0.5$. Nice, right?
Very helpful video. I was able to replace the from bearing with ease. The bearing actually was stuck to the alternator case not the shaft. A little heat and the bearing pushed right out.
Great video, thanks. Think my brushes are worn as my battery light has come on, initially only at low revs, but now at all revs below 5000rpm. They've only got a few about 5mm of meat on them. BMW E46 Valeo 90A alternator, regulator looks very similar to the one you had.
Nice video , 02 bmw 325ci alternator not charging I ordered the brushes from your link .is there any other part that I need that would cause alternator not to charge?

Great video. Really clear. Going to try this on my Freelander now. Many thanks for saving me the cost of a new alternator.
Dude saved me $1000 on a new alternator for my Audi S5 this guys beast
Great detailed video. I will be replacing my alternator regulator in few days. Same Valeo model. Thanks!
Thank you now i have more confidence in replacing my alternator brushes
God bless🙏🙏
Hello mate,
Regulators dont really give any trouble in these types.
If you are certain that the alternator is the problem i would sugest checking the continuity of the rotor, just between the sliprings.
If rotor is ok it becomes complicated then, but i would give another
go to the positive wire that goes from the battery to the alternator.
Just double check it.
Hope this helps :D.
Well done sir, excellent instructions. I just wasted €134 on o recon alternator for my Peugeot 1.4hdi. I should have watched your video first.
Very helpful video 👍👍
Thanks for the post, I needed an alternator so I just bought a new one but after seeing this I might inspect the old one, order brushes and return the new one!
That is exactly what i did!!
atvkid0805 thanks for that video....you made it look easy...I just got a quote... €495 for a new alternator.
That's a good point you make there with the grinder! 👍
Thanks, this saved me a lot of money.
Great video, excellent explanation and camera work, thank you! Lovin' the accent too to be sure! 😎👍
Thanks a million dude! You just saved me $200 worth!
Very helpful video. I was able to replace the from bearing with ease. The bearing actually was stuck to the alternator case not the shaft. A little heat and the bearing pushed right out.
Thank god I saw your video before to buy a new alternator!! And thank you for share your knowledge 👍🏻
Nice and good bro
Great video. Bought a Valeo alternator rebuilt kit which has new brushes, Slip ring and bearings. You're video helped a lot, many thanks :)
Awesome video man, love your work!
Dude i ve told you again, you are amazing, everything needed is covered thanks
Good video ...Thanks from Chili, South America
you are the best. From now on, I'll buy from your shop!!
Great video, thanks. Think my brushes are worn as my battery light has come on, initially only at low revs, but now at all revs below 5000rpm. They've only got a few about 5mm of meat on them. BMW E46 Valeo 90A alternator, regulator looks very similar to the one you had.
excellent tuto the most sympatic and clear video to repair alternator regulator and brushes with second part video
