@@janepianotutorials Haha, I'd love to claim I was being that careful. But in reality, I was actually looking for videos of this song to see what fingering people used precisely to reach that note, since I struggle with it, and I noticed you were doing it an octave higher than in the score haha. But yeah, I notice different editions of the Anna Magdalena notebook differ significantly! Usually just in where the repetitions are placed, and the style annotations though. Thanks for sharing though, these videos are very useful to students like me :)
Re-learning at 59 after having lessons for years as a child. Amazed by the variation between different editions of the same piece of music. I Have the Schirmers edition Of First Lessons in Bach, and it's marked up quite differently from the one your playing. I also learned a new word - Urtext!
Nice to hear from you. I learned about the existence of various editions and “urtext” after I began this project. An expert friend told me Chopin editions differ the most. I assume Chopin manuscripts were difficult to decipher.
Been exercising on it for just over a month, now I'm finally getting some speed in it, but still not as fast as you were playing it. I do find the piece quite challenging.
0:19 -- fast 2:02 -- slow the hardest part of the first half is this: 2:15 to 2:50 - for me though... I always get stuck on that part. for the second part, it is VERY confusing sometimes (for me, too!), except for the last three bars.
Logical approach: Practice just the sections that give you trouble. Force yourself to obey a metronome. Set it to your competent speed. Upon each repeat, tick it up 1 bpm. With patience you will reach tempo and play evenly.
Am guessing we are using different editions. I do make lots of mistakes, so trust your score more than you trust my tutorials. Oct 16, a new comment brought me back here. I checked measure 18, it looks as if I played the same as what was printed here. Did you figure it out?
Jane, I watched this video ten times before learning the piece on my piano. Thank you for your demonstration. Do you have any tip on practicing trill? Xiao
Happy New Year, Kristin. How about a New Year Resolution? learn to read music. I made EASY sight reading lessons for you, link is in every End Screen. Soon you will be independent of tutorials ☺️
I am still confused about the triplet in the 3rd measure at approx 2:45 - it seems like you play it twice? Is that what the small note indicates? The music I have with my lesson shows the triplet with 3 1/8ths connected by a single bar. Sounds nice the way you play it though!
that symbol is called a "trill", some editions have a "mordant" instead of a trill. both are ornaments. we can play what sounds better, but make sure we keep the tempo and count.
Jane ah, okay that is very helpful. Apparently that has not been discussed in my lessons to this point. Thank you for the information and terminology, I will look it up and read more about it. I was really struggling with this song and your video has helped me so much. I'm excited to polish it up this weekend and move on to the next lesson unit. Thanks again!
Thanks for posting this! I'm teaching myself to play and can play it slowly, but not at normal pace. Do you suggest learning 1 hand then the other or practicing learning both hands together?
I think the sooner we play the piece with both hands, the better. Do use separate hands to figure out difficult parts 😊. Start slowly and gradually increase the speed. Best is to practice one short section at a time before putting all of it together near the end.
Excellent question. It is common practice to alternate fingers on repeated single notes. why? try this experiment: play one note repeatedly as fast as possible with one finger, such as 333333, then try it alternating fingers, such as 3131313 and 321321321... await your feedback :)
How long did you practice that I mean like that was like no pauses no stumbles no notes wrong actually I have that song and I have lots of trouble with it I actually just got it along time ago but that was very good job.
Thanks for your kind words. I didn’t practice it. But I do make mistakes, when that happens I back up and re-record, then use a video editing program. The best way to practice is to concentrate on the parts that give you trouble. Set a metronome to your comfortable speed, then upon each repeat, tick it up 1 or 2 bpm until you reach the desired tempo. Have fun!
Hello, could i suggest the song "Starry Night" by Catherine Rollin? I have the sheet music, but i dont know how to or where to request it and how to get you the sheet music. Could you please tell me? Please and thank you. BTW, this video really helped me while i was learning this song!
My many piano books are so old they are falling apart and disintegrating just like me ;) Fortunately, we can download classical scores for free on IMSLP.
Identifying composers of various Bach works can be tricky. I probably used info from a book or IMSLP. It takes hours to cross-reference with reliable sources like scholarly texts or authoritative editions for accurate information. Have you researched into it? If yes, please let us know your findings.
@@janepianotutorials Wow, quick response, thank you! No, I haven't researched. But I asked the question on the ground that the most of the sources that I have seen indicate that it is J S Bach who composed the piece as well as the music sheet you used said it was from Anna Magdalena's notebook. It was J S's gift to his beloved second wife and I didn't think the book included CPE's work although not 100% sure (He was a little boy at the time and not likely add his work in Dad's love gift to Stepmom). Thanks for your wonderful work regardless! I really enjoyed it, especially slow tempo.
@@sungcho5165 Thanks for your quick response also. It is an interesting mystery waiting to be solved. Ah, perhaps my husband can find time to research this? Will ask and see whether I get a frown :)
Just to be sure, it looks like you have played some notes staccato but on the sheet, they aren't flagged like that. In my copy, there are indeed notes staccato and accented. :)
Good job paying attention, David. Indeed, editions differ. Please read the video description for more info. IMSLP lacked this edition when I made the tutorial.
i play this piece to 80% Jane, ty for tutorial. what piece can u recommend after this one?.... what you think about this piece for my level? Chopin, Waltz in A minor, B 150, Op.. greetings, i hope ur ok.
Yes, that waltz would be fun for you to play. Can start with a short section that looks most difficult and practice just that for a week. If you succeed, you know you can learn the rest.
Hi Jane, thanks for posting this. I am a beginner who has been taking lessons since last October and this is the song assignment I am currently working on. (have quite a bit work to go before I smooth it out though!) But I have a question for you; at roughly the 2':45", in the 3rd measure of line 5 of the treble clef (per the sheet music display) it sounds like you play the C#/B/C# triplet an extra time? Is that what the smaller note below the "tr" means? My music looks a bit different from yours, it shows it with a d 1/8th, then the c/b/c single bar triplet, and then b/a as barred 1/8th's (apologies if that is the wrong terminology) . I only play that triplet once per my music and playing example from my instructor. Is that just a different version you have or something extra you add in? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for your help!
Why do you say that? A beginner is neither good nor bad, we'll find out later when he/she is no longer a beginner. For example, I am a bad non-beginner :/
that is me playing. if you learn one measure at a time, it will not be too hard. remember, use a metronome, start slow and gradually increase the tempo.

Is the left hand non legato?
Back in Bach’s time, keyboards can’t play legato, Notes sound detached. It is an option to play legato on today’s instruments.
Oh, thanks a lot!!🙏🏻😊
What does that weird C at the beginning stand for?
It is a time signature notation. C stands for 4/4 time. This cut-C stands for 2/2 time. See Wikipedia: "Time Signature"
