  • In this short LearnElectrics video we will take a look at how kinetic switches work. Many people have asked how kinetic switches can function when there are no wires between two-way switches. Why do we not need a neutral, how can I extend a lighting circuit with kinetic switches and a myriad of other questions.
This video will take a general look at how they work, a look at how they do what they do, and a follow-on video will look at the specifics of various types of switch and modifying different types of circuit.
We will look at the scientific term -kinetic energy - a explain this with simple comparisons and drawings so that it is easily understood.
Physics tells us that energy cannot be destroyed. It must go some-where, it must be passed on or converted into something else, and without getting too complicated we look at what this means for us.
And what happens in the switch? What happens when a switch with no wires is pressed? Why does the light come on?

Great video, this is amazing, I wonder if there is a reg regarding a transmitter switch

Its not connected to the installation and it does not generate enough voltage/current to be a hazard to you and me,

    Hi dave it amazing.
Is any magic number cable per metre without book. Like voltage drop and zs . Is any number for cable per In ohm easy number. Request do some video for easy cable magic number. Thank you

How do we test a Quinetic light system

Replace the receiver switch with a standard switch for the duration of the test. Hope this helps. Dave.

Sorry for being thick but......I get the kinetic movement converting to a signal because of the physical gearing in the transmitter switch (ie initial press/movement produces the energy) but what powers the receiver circuitry? The transmitted signal surely hasn't enough energy to induce any reaction.

I think the receiver is on the mains. The kinetic switch is wireless, the receiver switch is not.

@@nigelpalmer1172that's the confusing bit though....at 10:10 the diagram shows line (live) in and SWITCHED live out, ie no neutral at that switch....which you would expect on a traditional switch 🤔

You will have a live and neutral supply in and a live and neutral load out@@stuffoflardohfortheloveof

@@stuffoflardohfortheloveof you dont get a neutral on a standard switch configuration. Live in, live out.

@@merlin5476 that's what I said.... So if there's no neutral where does the receiving electronics get it's power from?

I’m quite sure that Drax produces a whole lot more than 2.5MW as you said at 5.07. Possibly 2.5GW ? One small wind turbine can produce 2.5MW. The largest offshore wind turbines can produce 9-10MW so I bet Drax produces exponentially more than that.
