I so appreciate your approach to creating minis, Ara... you emphasize creating the impression of the thing, rather than a slavish replication, and that gives each piece a sense of soul. Plus, your aging and weathering is second to none, girl. Bravo! xoxo
Thank you Heather! I like how you said that. Can I be the first miniature impressionist? I am gearing up to make leaves following your tutorial!... they are going to cover the shop and take forever lol! Thank goodness for my cameo!
I used registers just like this one for many years and I can say you nailed it. Took me back to my years as a check-out chick lol Great video as always, thank you
So I’m here from Jazzas video, and I’ve now watched this entire coffee house series. Let me just say, you’re a delight to watch. You’re humble and you like every comment on your videos. It’s amazing. You’re amazing.
Wow thank you so much for taking the time to watch the creating of my Coffee shop! It means a lot to me that you are enjoying the videos💖 And thank you for your kind words about my channel... its words like those that keep me creating!
Beautiful, I recognised it immediately as one I used in the past. Credit cards didn't go thru cash registers back then, the black bit on the left is the hole where the receipt roll goes inside & where you turn the keys to balance the cash.
That makes a lot more sense! I really couldn't figure out how you would get the card in there anyway lol! Maybe I can get a bit of paper sticking out of the opening or something! Thanks for the clarification!!
@@BentleyHouseMinis Good idea Ara, I can visualise the receipt paper being all gross & dirty instead of white. I had a thought about a couple of things for the counter - a bunch of wipe-able (laminated) menus in a little holder could be fun, they'd probably be the only thing still intact - that stuff never breaks down LOL. Or some of those wire sticky-up-y things with a weighted base & on one end with a number in the end with the wire, (you know the thing you take to your table once you've ordered, to show the waitress where to deliver your meal to?) EDIT: well, duh! they're called 'table number holders' www.slimlinewarehouse.com.au/table-number-holders/tnhch12.aspx?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwJOth6qS4gIVQR2PCh1vewhiEAQYASABEgJgxfD_BwE
Cool! Maybe one of those vintage candy dispensers that you put a coin to get a gumball would look nice. I wonder if the coffee shop is abandoned for some kind of chemical accident or something like this...
Just amazing Ara. I love your cash register. And I love how you put such a personal touch to your video by talking about the coffee shop you went to. I was imagining myself being there and enjoying a coffee on a rainy day. 😊❤
I know I just commented on the other video for the light switch but I just thought you could probably have some apron/uniform shirt things on a hook as if someone left it there thinking they were gonna come back another day. Maybe even put a couple rusted name tags around the place. Also you could make a miniature blackboard either on the wall or one standing on the floor saying “today’s specials” or something and maybe a menu? I don’t know it’s late and I’m thinking way too deep right now. Hope you enjoy some of my ideas!
Sometimes late night ideas are the best idea!! I really like the apron with a name tag idea! The rusty stain from the name tag would be a fun detail :)
It came out great! To make your life easier if you ever need to cut out something like the keys again prebake the thin sheet for half the time you are supposed to.. Then you can cut out lines & squares easier.
Thank you for the tip Cyndi! I was thinking about putting it in the freezer for a bit but I was too lazy to walk back and forth... half baking the clay is a better idea!
you crack me up. As I watch this it is pouring down rain, so yeah... lol. The cash register was awesome. I'm always amazed at what you come up with. They may not be "perfect" but they have SO much more character than a molded plastic no-detail mini. oh, and for the counter, a pie-box. Sort of a glass cabinet with two or three glass shelves that a whole pie, or pre-cut pieces of pie could sit on. You could make a couple of manky pie pans or little plates or something.
You could make an 80’s style radio/tape player. You could also make a broken vase with some dead flowers. That would be cute. Also a business card holder with a few business cards in it.
So cool! We go to a small mom & pop bakery sometimes and they have the classic counters. Next time we go there I will try to remember to take some pics and send them to you for ideas. I just love the register.
I'm so glad that there are people like you that are so talented and inspirational...I love your work. You have inspired me to do miniatures again!! Of course going with your story line...would spilled coffee grounds from a filter or coffee beans or ground coffee beans from a jar still be around? Coffee cups with the shops name on it....might be too hard. Price list/or torn price list next to the phone...of course creamer containers or one of your fabulous milk jugs thrown in the garage.
I hadn't thought of doing coffee filters... great idea! It will be interesting to look for a material that will work for those. I am so glad you are feeling inspired and wanting to make minis ;) I appreciate all the ideas!
In Finland , the coffee shops have a key to the toilet near or on the counter. It usually has a big tag or large item hooked to it so it doesn’t walk away. Another idea would be a tip jar. Or some box for a charity.
Oh that's a great idea as well... I need something to hang on the side of the display case so that would be a good one! Some places here in the US do that too. Usually smaller family owned shops.
oh & the 'indention' (or indentation if you speak English lol) is where you had to sit the cash you took from the customer, to keep it in plain view while making change - so they couldn't claim to have given you a larger denomination of currency than they really had (& many tried). Some cash registers had an upright money clip on the front for the same reason.
Haha sorry... I only speak Texan ;) Thank you for clarifying that as well... I did remember the little credit card sliders (with the carbon paper) so I was thinking maybe it was a place for one of those... but what you said makes sense!
I definitely think that some kind of "critter" should be on the list. The shop has reverted to wild, after all. I remember those cash registers. I worked at Woolworths back then, and "read" them 3 times per shift.
You are right! But I am super scared to make an animal! If anything I think I might invest and buy a professionally made critter. I try to make everything by hand but not sure my skills are at real-looking-animal yet lol!
Support local!! Awesome. Did y’all get those awful storms in Texas? I’m in Shreveport Louisiana. We got pummeled! Tornadoes and all Wednesday. That register looks like the one we use at the diner at work at.
Yes we've had some pretty rough storms recently... and now because of them its cold!... In may... in Texas... that never happens lol. We should be sweating right now. I hope everyone was ok from the tornadoes.
Ara, I used one of those exact cash registers back in the 90's when I was an assistant supervisor for a fabric store that was a bit behind the times where technology was concerned. I love that you made from for your abandoned coffee shop!!

@@BentleyHouseMinis Thank you Ara. I just get over sensitive about it at times. It isn't your fault or anything you did. I sincerely mean that!! I watch quite a few of you peeps and am subscribed to a lot of them. I really enjoy making miniatures. I am totally new to it. I love all these idea!! Esp the wet floor sign.. I had not thought of that but I think every establishment has to have them in case of a spill to warn customers! Great thought! i appreciate the kind words and I hope you have a fantastic weekend as well!!
You have easily surpassed my need for details with that cash register!!! Amazing dedication on that one. Perhaps for the shop you could add stacks of paper cups...how would you do that?? and a cup or two on the floor flattened. Old newspapers. Upright refrigerator case with glass doors...
You could use a template maker website like www.templatemaker.nl (it's what us poor people use when rich people use Scan n Cuts as they start at $600 here in Australia). They make paper shapes in the sizes & shapes you request. you just print, cut & glue. A bunch of tiny paper cups would be a simple task for it.
Love the idea of the cups Catherine! I will have to think about how I would make it but it would be a great detail! And thanks for sharing a possible solution Joanne!
Hmm, take out menus or a menu board? Possibly a power cord for the register. This project is so darn cute! I don't know if you are doing a backstory for it or not, but I keep thinking about your little skeletons for the Victorian. It would be funny to turn one of them into a zombie and have it sitting at the table with a cup of coffee and reading a tattered newspaper.
I def am thinking about a menu board! and yes I totally forgot the register needs a cord lol! It wasn't in the reference photo so I didn't think to make it🤔 Love the skeleton idea too... I have a few 1/12 scale I can play around with ;)
Great job! Looks realistic,in the 80’s there were many types of registers in use from manual registers with crank handles to the electronic type. More important it should look appropriate in the setting you are using it, which it does!
I be been in such a bummer stage with my dollhouse its such a cool idea to go in person! I've been trying to get ideas from pinterest because of your vid I'm going to the furniture store!
You could have an old cookie display with like some mouldy cookies or packets of crumbs that used to be biscotti. A broken glass cake stand maybe. Some crushed and chewed (by rodents) paper cups.
For the little applicators you showed, I bought “micro applicators” on amazon. I got 500 of them for like $6 instead of $4 for like 20 at the craft store. They are used for eyelash extensions (I think)
There was one shop that I went to a lot as a kid that took polaroids of us whit our meals/coffe’ and put them in a glassmenu stand on the counter so people could see what was popular on that day🤣❤️ owner was a former hippie that love to make it personal✌🏽 ”edit” I still have two of those polaroids on my wall, me eating icecream whit my nana (RIP)
That is such a cute idea and I am sure people loved it! And you even got to keep them and keep that memory as well! They did have a pin board but I think it was more friends and family pics :)
This is fantastic! How do you know what size to make it so it looks proportional to the room? I was wondering this for all the things you make and buy for your dollhouses.
Great question! When I first started out I measured everything to make sure that 1foot = 1inch and did a lot of math in my head to make sure it all worked. But as I have worked in 1:12 scale I can just kind of eyeball it and tell if it is the right size. Another thing I highly suggest is to get a 1:12 scale figurine or doll. Your brain is automatically wired to tell if something is the right size as compared to a human figure... so putting your minis next to a figure can help you a lot ;)
in the 80's they used a carbon paper slide for credit cards hun..the scanner did not come into play till the 2000nds if I remember correctly..sorry. nice job on the machine thoe.
No worries... Joanne clarified that the detail I thought was a credit card reader is actually the place where the receipts would come out... which make way more sense. So it doesn't have a CC scanner so it lines up with what you mentioned Greta ;)
Oh yes! Maybe they could be punctured on one of those upside down nail things... like in kitchens they puncture the orders when they're done? I don't know what they're called but your comment made me think of them lol
I really can understand why you have made the Cash Register closed. But I think for realism, People in fear and distress would take every chance they had to get Money for the first time. And on the outside you can't see if the Cash Register is empty. OK, Depending on which Problems the People had Money won't have any value, but in the Beginning of a catastrophesy they think Money could save them. Like the slogan: "Money rules the World" I think the Cash Register would be broken up. Ah your Coffee Shop inspiring my Imagination. Sorry for that. What does you think?
I think its great to think through details like that. The coffee shop has been a learning process for me in creating realism and understand how humans use and abandon a building. All questions and different points of view are welcome and help me grow. I think the closed cash register will make sense when I share the story of the shop this Friday but in most cases it probably would be best created open ;)
From a retail worker in the 80's, The Gap was my first job, you got it! All you need is paper shreds from receipt tape...unless they blew away...
I'm so happy when I hear folks choose local family businesses over places like Starbucks. Support local business! 😊
Me too! And they are such a great family! The parents and the kiddos work there and seem to have such a fun time!

Of course you need a cover÷d glass cake plate with moldy donuts. haha And, a few mice.😊🐀🐀🍩🍩🍩
Great job love the cash register Big like # 150 Regards Madeline
Thank you so much Madeline!
@@BentleyHouseMinis your welcome
I know where Iris Coffee Shop is! That is so cool!
It's a such a great shop and the family is wonderful!!
For the little applicators you showed, I bought “micro applicators” on amazon. I got 500 of them for like $6 instead of $4 for like 20 at the craft store. They are used for eyelash extensions (I think)
Oooh great tip! Thanks Megan!
A giant fork and spoon for the aalls1 that all kitches had in the 80s lol😆😆
Oh yes lol!!! Reminds me of an episode of Everybody Love Raymond lol! The big fork and spoon!
Another great tutorial👍
Thank you Diana💖💖
in the 80's they used a carbon paper slide for credit cards hun..the scanner did not come into play till the 2000nds if I remember correctly..sorry. nice job on the machine thoe.
I remember working at a gas station and used the credit card slide right up to 94 when I left.
as far as i can remember we used them up here till 2000..
No worries... Joanne clarified that the detail I thought was a credit card reader is actually the place where the receipts would come out... which make way more sense. So it doesn't have a CC scanner so it lines up with what you mentioned Greta ;)
It's okay
Old receipts that could have a lot of water damage and be on the floor smattered around
Oh yes! Maybe they could be punctured on one of those upside down nail things... like in kitchens they puncture the orders when they're done? I don't know what they're called but your comment made me think of them lol
Ara, what about a guest check notebook?
Good idea!! Prob pretty easy to make too!
❤❤❤
Reminds me of my childhood.. I need some for my kitchen lmao
😍😍😍🥰
👍😀
👍
Yet I'm early! Lol
😃💖
*covered!
No
I really can understand why you have made the Cash Register closed.
