- Cover #109. So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes was one of those albums I just played non-stop when it came out. The songs were amazing, the production was solid and I loved the Neapolitan theme on the cover -- The peak of NOFX. I love how this track has a little for everyone!

That’s an odd triplet kind of thing you’re doing with the hats on the fast parts. I might try that. Playing 1/16’s straight is wearing me out lol. Super tight kicks dude!
Nice observation dude! Yeah that hat work took some doing for sure. Smelly has been doing that triplet hat feel on all the NOFX double time stuff since at least the Punk In Drublic record. It took me years to figure it out exactly to be honest. Even before I started drumming I knew he was up to something weird there. He essentially just follows the rhythms of the guitars.
It works our nicely in the mix since he's not hitting the hats on the gallop part of the kick pattern so those fast kicks just cut the mix better. Super cool idea! (and it's easier to play even faster!) Good luck with it and thanks for the great comment!! 🤘☺️🤘
That "odd" triplet you are doing is also the only way I can play this intro ahah!
@@ElDarren You are one of the few folks I've encountered online that just KILLS the triplet. Playing drums for 3 years and listening to NOFX for like 15, I never knew why Smelly sounds so different from the Raun or another double timer until I started playing myself and slowed down the audio to hear because 16ths were murdering me.
@@dreamsEGA Yeah, it's definitely a unique way to play and it really locks in with the strumming style of the guitars. If you listen to those older RKL records, Bomer plays that way. Smelly was heavily influenced by those guys, and that's where it all stems from as far as I know. Bomer was a skate punk drum god!! I appreciate the great comment my friend. Happy Drumming!🥁🤘
This weekend my former singer came to spend a few days with us.He is a fan of "punk rock" from the 90s, I showed him several videos from your channel, he loved it and told me to send you these compliments for your precision and energy, BRAVO!
Oh that's so cool! I sometimes still have a hard time wrapping my head around my videos being played in France. You guys are awesome! 🍻🥁🎉

Hey Darren, I was really curious to see what the next song would be. Nofx is always a great choice for a drum cover!

Radness! Thanks for the comment dude!
Bro, you nailed those snare rolls at 1:40 so damn clean, just as clean as Smelly is. Huge respect!
Nice! Yeah that whole reggae / ska part has some tricky fills but I did my best to nail em. What a cool song!!
Wow, this is awesome Darren!
Thanks a bunch Bert! Great to see you around here checking out the channel 🤘😃🤘
Seamless punk groove with that reggae vibe sprinkled in… perfect!!! Real nice job Darren. Rock on 😎👊🏻🎉
That means a lot sir! Thanks a million ☺️
PERFECT
Awesome. Thanks dude! 👍
Hoorah! So long and thanks for all the shoes! Killer drumming and awesome video and sound! I always liked when they dabbled in reggae beats! NOFX forever! 🤘
Hey Rich! NOFX forever fo sho! I'd love to see them play the Punk in Drublic show next month in SF but missed out on the tickets unfortunately. They 're playing the entire SLATFATS album and probably a bunch of other old tunes too. I'm sure they'll play some more shows around here eventually but I really with I bought a ticket sooner. You snooze you lose! Hope you're doing well my friend!!
Nice!!!
Hey thanks a million! 👍🥁
Yes brother!;
Sweet dude! 👌
This is so good Darren! Love the insane slamming punk beats coupled with the hyper-drive reggae cross sticks... super impressive work my man! 🤘🤘💥💥🔥🔥
That's super high praise good buddy! I'm so happy you liked it. You are a monster behind that kit man!!
is just stunning to watch you play the drums, hermano!!! fantastice work, as always!!!!
Gracias por ver hermano!
Man, that was awesome.
Thanks Myke!
What a great pleasure to find you on RUclips, I repeat myself but I am amazed each time, by your energy and your precision, the passage "SKA" at 0.20 is beautiful, it reminds me of "Stewart Copeland', a big bravo Darren you're an amazing drummer!!!
Wow, thank you! That's some amazing praise to be compared in any way to Stewart Copeland. I wish I had a fraction of the songwriting abilities that he does. He's always impressed me with the original drumming he's done with the Police all the various percussion in movie scores over the years. It means a lot to read your comments on my videos. Thanks for being such solid supported of my channel Bob!! 👍👍👍
Awesome
Thanks dude! 👍
Awesome
Radness!!
This is such a great song... and also cover ofcourse!
Sweet dude! Thanks for checking it out Luka. I know you've covered this one on you channel too. What a cool bass line!
Bro you are killer!! Your sound is perfect and I am definitely a fan of your drumming!!
Awesome! That's great to hear. I've been trying to dial in my drum sounds lately so I'm stoked to get some positive feedback! 👍🥁🎵
This was incredible!!!!! Your such a great player,,,,, bravo 🙌 😊😊😊😊
Right on Bryan!! You are too kind sir 🤘
@@ElDarren of course, my friend, it’s my pleasure, you got my support
Great work buddy! Did not realize that there was a "snare off" snare until I saw you playing this. Cool! I wonder if the set was like that in the studio as well - I guess there is no chance to switch it on and off during the song.
Jiihoo! What's up dude! Sounds like you survived Antarctica. Maybe you're still there. Great to hear from you either way. Nice observation with the second snare! Smelly used a 2nd snare off to the left of his kit for as long as I can remember. Flipping off the snare wires on the main snare would be pretty much impossible here... in recent years he's actually switched to a proper timbale so that's all cool and reggae and stuff :) Every now and then I like to dust of my pork pie snare that's over in the corner collecting dust and sneak it into a song. Hope all is well sir!!
Nice! Yes, I am back and everything is ok. Just published The Malachi Crunch a week or so ago. Never realized Smelly had an extra snare, but now looking at some videos he indeed does. Thanks, cool info! @@ElDarren
Nice work 👍
Awesome! Thanks so much🤘
Man your playing is so smooth!! Perfect cover and song choice😍🔥🏄♂
That means a lot bud! I appreciate the kind words 🤘
Awesome job! Know any Propagandhi songs?! ❤
Nice! Oh man I've been toying around with covering Back to the Motor League for a while but haven't had a chance to break it down and learn it. They have so many great tunes. What would be some others by them you'd want to see?
