  • This Ryobi trimmer was hard to start and would not get to full speed when the throttle was advanced. The video shows what was happening and what was done to fix the problem. Two comments not in the video: A new carburetor can be bought on line for about $17. I am going to run the gas out of the carburetor if it is not going to be used within a few days.

    The screw closest to the motor will set the idle & the one closest to the air filter will set the high speed running

    There are 3 problems with this trimmer.
    1. the timing belt will jump/slip. Fix is to remove belt, stick screwdriver in plug hole and set crank to TDC then reset top cog to TDC mark and reinstall belt.
    2. If the belt is old and/or stretched, replacement requires dropping oil pan, removing coil, then hammering crankshaft out to remove the belt.
    3. The camshaft journal for the camshaft bushing/bearing is cast into the head... so it cannot be replaced. To check, grab the timing belt cog and see if it wiggles... if it does there's a good chance the camshaft journal bushing/bearing is compromised and this will cause the belt to continually jump/slip on the cog.
    Do #3 first... if there is any play.. toss the trimmer...

      The belt is not slipping off and the cog has no play....for now:-)

    Regarding high and low carb adjustments, there is an H and an L staring right at you on the carb body; you can figure out which is which.

      Have you had an opportunity to work on it? How did it turn out?

    Thanks for the detailed video- mine has a small Bakelite mounting port / spacer that broke when I removed the carb and I cannot find this part anywhere online… I think it may be the death of it but trying to find one still. Thanks again, great video!

      Sorry, Jon, I usually reply right away, mostly because I don't get that many views or comments.....yet:-) Anyhow, just thinking out loud about your broken bakelite mount, if it is not completely shattered, Epoxy might hold it together: Epoxy is fuel proof. When things that take a lot of punishment, like yours break on me, I wrap some about .3 mm copper wire around the perimeter and tighten it before the epoxy cures, then spread some epoxy over the wire and bakelite body to keep it all in place and from un raveling. If you look at the gray choke lever on the power head in this video, you will notice it has an off white substance over part of it. That is epoxy with wire under it. I repaired it that way because I knew it would be a "hard to find" part. Also the original broke because it is too weak for the application. Where as my repair is way stronger. Thanks for the comment, and I hope this helps a fellow fixer:-)

      @@martyplecki7567 hi
      Marty - I used superglue and let it dry wrapped in wire as suggested - success! Trimmer runs better than ever.. thanks and appreciate your input and advice.

    Is the Roybi still working? I have one that is similar with similar symptoms. Checking the youtoob for training…it was an inherited piece that doesn’t seem well cared for. I’ll probably start at spark arrestor and go from there.

      Yes it is. If yours cranks with the cord, there is oil in the crank case and the belt does not come off the pulley, you should be able to get it to run without many problems. Good luck:-)

    Is there another type of carburetor that we can install on this engine?

    • @martyplecki7567
      @martyplecki7567  Год назад +1

      I don't know if another carburetor would work. I expect it would depend on whether the carburetor was designed for that displacement engine. You can try whatever you like if it fits. Good luck:-)
