I have the same weed eater. Did a full tune-up kit, as well as carb and fuel line replacement. Would start, then immediately die when I moved it off full choke. I adjusted the carb without any improvement. It ended up being the new gasket they sent with the new carb. If you look at the 4:09 mark in this video, the gasket has the large circular hole, then 4 smaller holes. One of those holes has to line up with the small hole in the carb. The new gasket's holes were not aligned, and were blocking that hole. I put a hole in the gasket at the appropriate spot and, bam! Perfectly running weed eater. Thanks Chinese company for the crappy gasket.
Thanks for the tip, Kevin! Got my weedwhacker all put together with the new carb, and I got the same results as you 😡Drilled a little hole like you said (once I figured out its placement), then I was going full throttle, baby! You da man!
That hole is the vacuum impulse passage from the crank. It pulls vacuum and operates the diaphragm fuel pumps in your carburetor to pump fuel to the jets.
I've been running my Ryobi RY251PH without a problem for over 5 year. Recently it quit on me and I was able to switch out the carburetor and it is running like new again. Thank you for the video.
Your vid drove to keep trying. My 12 year old 26cc Ryobi was doing the same as yours - starting and running but dying on opening the throttle. I bought a carb rebuild kit for UKP 3.25! First attempt didn't fix it but second go I replaced the diaphragm (supplied in the kit) on base of carb, gave it a blow with compressed air and it seems to be running properly again. There was nothing obviously wrong with the old diaphragm except maybe not as flexible as the new one, but it did the job. Thanks for the vid - knowing other people have a go at repair spurred me on to try again.
Solved!! I did a full replacement as per the vid and still no joy. I took a closer look at the new carb gasket and noticed it was missing a hole. I sized up the old gasket and made a new hole and it ran perfectly!! I'm good for another season!!
Thanks for the comment about the missing hole in the gasket. I hope I would have noticed it but can't guarantee I would have but your comment made me look at it as soon as I got the new carburetor kit. Sure enough that hole was also missing in my gasket. Drilled it out, installed the carburetor and the unit runs like new. Thanks for your comment, that's why I always read comments from an interesting video.
Oh man, I can't thank you enough. I was actually thinking about getting a new trimmer if cleaning the carb didn't work. I was actually looking for info on cleaning the carb when I found your video. Started up on the first try! A couple notes for anyone else, though. 1. The torx bits that hold the carb in are T20 and I would recommend using them if you can. The flat head will work but the metal on mine was soft and my screwdriver kept slipping out and chewing up the heads. 2. The fuel lines on the new carb were oriented differently but this seemed to make no difference. Just make sure you hook the lines up correctly and you should be fine. Thanks again!
Just used this to help me fix mine. 20 min and boom started right up. I already had the tools for the screws/bolts, but the carb kit was an exact match. Great video and commentary.
Another happy viewer. Purchased the parts in your link at the end of the video. All installed easily. Great instructional video. Thank you very much! Ern BTW, the link I followed didn't include the air filter. My fault. I wasn't looking closely at the amazon kit. There were other kits that included the filter. But, I just washed my filter and it was as good as new. Again, thank you very much.
Great video. Thanks for sharing! Replaced my carb in 10 minutes with the kit you linked. Cranked right up! Very easy - almost like I knew what I was doing.
I had the 2 cycle for 2 years and then threw a rod using the pole saw attachment. I bought the 4 cycle and it has been great for over 4 years now. Once a year on the first start you just hit it with a little carb cleaner. Note, we use it as a weedeater, tiller, blower, and pole saw.
Thank you. I have the same problem with my 26 CC engine. The only thing is that you have changed all the parts that could cause this problem and not really diagnose the issue.
I removed the 2 screws holding on the air cleaner, and 4 screws holding the primer bulb. I saw 1 port on the primer bulb side, and one port that goes into the throttle body; I blew them out with compressed air. Now it works.
Mine was running like that and I replaced the fuel lines and found the fuel filter was unhooked. Lines replaced and filter hooked up it runs great now and idles great.
Think I might need to do this. My weed eater isn't turning and sounds just like yours. Just need to find the proper tools 😮💨 I don't have the T25 oh and I forgot to mention that mine isn't even that old. Maybe 3 years. It was cutting fine last week. And today it just started acting up
Thank you sir! I have the exact same trimmer and it wouldn't rev up. I bought it around 2013, used it the first couple of years and then didn't use it for a year or two. When I tried to get it going, it just like you describe - bogging down when getting gas. I ordered the new kit, it came in days and this morning I replaced it. Voila, it now runs like new for $16. I was ready to toss it along with the attachments. Instead, I was able to cut brush again with the steel blade attachment! I"m back in business - Thank you!!
Thanks for the vid. Everything you said worked but after all the replacements I still have the same problem. Engine not running smoothly and peters out when you squeeze full throttle
My weed eater which is the same brand did the same thing replaced the carb No help replaced all the gaskets new spark plug new spark rester New clutch and adjusted it took it to my buddy who dose this for a living same thing he said few times for a new one now I do use mine for alot of work so I’m not shocked but only 5 years seems short but it was 100 dollars it will be nice to have a more powerful one. O and it gets 10x hotter then normal
I have the exact same ryobi and have been having issues with it as well, I don’t know if you’ve come across this issue but with me it’ll turn on at full choke and turn off if I move it up to half choke
Lack of gas somewhere. If you think about it, full choke is less air, as you increase air (half-choke or run) the gas and air mix is off. The carb has a small inlet screen that gets clogged with debris. Take out the carb and clean it or replace the whole carb like this guy. If everything is clean and it still doesn't stay on. Adjust carb mix screws.
@@Snarfelle There are two adjustment screws; H( high ) and L ( low ) and it is indicated above them . They are round in shape and if you watch the video carefully you will be able to see those .

Thanks for this post. Quick question. Weed eater was working, but I refilled the weed eater with a different mix and afterwards it won't stay cranked. Could it still be the same thing or something different?
more of a carb replacement than fix lol.. I am curious though. why did you add the break in the new fuel line? just because its the way the old one was? that splice connector was probably use because the original line rotted. you could have just used 1 long length, fed into the tank and put the filter on that.. works either way though. doing this same thing on mine today since UPS just dropped off the carb kit. was going to rebuild and adjust jets on the existing carb, but new gaskets and diaphragm cost more than this kit did lol.. $14 for the whole new carb with spark plug, lines, etc.. liked and sub'd. thanks for the vid.
I just did this on mine, my ryobi power head has never been worked on before this and it had that splice in the fuel line. that seems to be a factory thing. though you're right there's no real reason to use it as far as i can see. funnily enough I just did this and really didnt need to replace anything other than the line between my carb and the splice, everything else i probably could have reused, but at $14 may as well
This is the first repairs I've had to do on my unit and it had the splice in the fuel suction line apparently from the factory. I just put the new carburetor on because I had changed the filter I thinking the filter was clogged already. So now I have a spare filter for the next time I need a new filter.
I know it's cheap but seems crazy to have to replace a carb every year or 2. I've had luck with removing the carb and simply blowing air thru the carb passages when it acts up. Suspect a little piece of debris gets lodged within one of the passages.
Great fix. But if it has high and low adjustments and you have the tool you can just richen/ increase the amount of fuel it gets and it should scream. Have done it many times on customer equipment. She sounds good though.
Well layed out. Issue with mine is its not getting fuel. The primer button is getting any. May just need to replace the lines. Kinda want to go battery powered. Those are much less finicky
Hi, I followed everything exactly and I thought I was back in business, but when I pump the fuel bubble no gas is brought into the carburetor at all. Bubble doesn’t seems to be torn or anything. I used the same kit from Amazon. Any ideas on what could be preventing fuel from coming into the system? Thanks!
I changed the fuel lines , carburettor , fuel filter cleaned the muffler and did what I thought I should have it starts , runs but dies down . However there is a little fuel leakage from carburettor, I don’t why , it is new and put a new kit . Please help and advise .
If you are having problems with one of these ryobis starting, first drain the fuel tank. Set the shaft in a vice to secure it. Take your dremel bit about mid shaft.....proceed to grind through shaft. You will come to a cable.... cut that with a hacksaw. Now you can stick that piece of Trash inside a 40 gallon garbage bag... fill remainder of trash bag up with stinky kitchen waste and the trash man will pick it up.
Could be any one of those. It could be the ethanol in the gasoline also. The gasoline engines can just have problems over time. The $19 I paid for my carb kit from Amazon was well worth it.
I have replaced the fuel line and fuel filter using Ryobi Fuel replacement kit. I have also replaced the spark plug. The Trimmer started and was running for 20 minutes and I trimmed about 20 meters of grass. After that it stopped. Everytime I primed , starts it but it stops after a minute or so. It now happens all the time. Why is it stopping now after a minute of so and how to fix it. Thanks in advance
I've noticed everytime I let the trimmer sit for longer than 2 weeks, it has trouble starting. I had it serviced first time because I couldn't get it running, now it's doing it again (after sitting for 2 weeks). I'm going to try to remove and clean the carb and if that doesn't work, I'll probably end up getting a new trimmer.
I never store my unit with fuel in the tank. Once I finish using it I always dump the remaining fuel from the trimmer tank back into my gas can. I then run the unit until the gas runs out and I even use the choke to make sure I get as much fuel out of the system as possible. My unit has always run perfectly until this particular time and I've had this trimmer for at least 5 years. It replaced a weed eater 1700 that I had for over 25 years. I did the same thing to the fuel and its tank also.
My Ryobi linetrimmer did the same like that turned out to be that fine stainless mesh in the mufler on mine their are a factory mounted plate with 3 screws i removed that and found that is was literaly totaly blocked i cleaned it with brakeflued putt it back my linetrimmer started first time and throtteld up as new again so that mesh actualy prevented the exaust gas from escaping . Hope it can help someone out their.
Mine was brand new. Ran for 2 minutes, then stopped. Started up again for 10 seconds (did this several times) then stopped. I even exchanged it for another and same issue
Iv got a brand new one,it ran3 hrs and now wont start, stripped it dwn, cleaned everything, its got spark, fuel, and air,it dont start,I'll use it for parts.i guess.
What about just using a single D screwdriver and just adjust the carb. Instead of spending money on a new carb (not that it's expensive but still cheaper adjust carburetor first)
All these gas weedeater need a new carb about every damn year. I'm done. Neighbor has a Milwaukee battery powerd and it works every bit as good as my Echo professional w'eater and my ryobi. Ever notice a car, truck, boat etc...dont need new fuel lines every year? These gas powerd lawn motors are designed to fail every 12 months. It risiculous
I agree. Just spent an hour cursing my 17 year old trimmer. Got the pos running just enough to do the front of the yard but then it conked out once again. I’m done. Can’t justify spending two hours to futz with a motor and then take eight minutes of weed whacking time. Electric time.
Are you careful to use non-ethanol gas? I almost learned that one the hard way on a brand new lawnmower. After only 1 season it wouldn't start anymore. Luckily cleaning the hell out of the carb did the trick. I've learn my lesson now.
wondering what could be wrong with the thing at first place.. (could it be bcus of wrong petrol/fuel?). what if you would of just clean those tubes? I’m having same problem (my guess is the people using it don’t take a good care). I’d try to clean all those parts up n assemble it back n run it. will post here how it went.. 🙄
Were not sure what caused the problem in the first place, we do live in a wet humid environment (during the winter) and know that water is the enemy for many of the small engines.
@@findoutDIY thank you for the reply. I tried to clean it up without air canister to blow the holes of carburetor then I changed the fuel filter still had the same problem.. could this also be that we never use a mix 2 stroke synthetic oil with normal fuel? could this has cause some ”damage” to the carburetor? I’ll try to change a new carburetor next n give it a run. We live in a dry n sunny place so we maybe don’t have that humidity problem i guess
Hey, I've replaced the entire carborator exactly the way you instructed and also replaced the spark plug and the engine still will not start. Would you have any idea what the problem could be?
If it's not starting at all, and if it feels like the pull cord is working, then I would assume the spark plug- but if you replaced it... Seems like it's not getting spark
@@Grahams-Grass Thanks! I did stumble across his page and he had a video about adjusting the high/low screw. I did that and now its cranking right up! First I had to order some kind of circle screw driver in order to even get to it.
@@l.j.2917 hey when you get a chance can you like that video? I think I’m in the same situation. Changed out the Carb, Fuel Lines, and spark plug and I’m not getting any signs of life.
Check the spark. Pull it out, then reconnect to the cable. Then pull the starter. If you are getting the spark - open the trottle all the way and press the lever (like when you are trimming) and pull. Should start.
I was using my Ryobi when I heard a loud pop. What happens when you leave the choke on, I may have left it open? I tried pulling the string, it has less to almost no resistance.
Usually if you leave it on Full Choke it will just die- I am not sure what would cause a loud pop like that. Could be interesting to take it apart and see
@@steelhanded11 This could be from too much air/not enough fuel (running lean), or too much fuel/ not enough air (running rich). Many carburetors have an adjustment screw (or 2), but it doesn't seem like this one does. Another easy thing to try is adjusting the throttle cable slightly in both directions while running it. Also, make sure you have new fuel

Mine won’t idle
Does anyone know if it's okay to use a Murray straight shaft attachment on the ryobi weedeater
Yes
Works fine
Like it
😀
is problem and Ryobi you work 6 month and you change carburetor is default and model i have 2 same trimmer Ryobi .
Carburetor Fix.... First buy a new carburetor
You should watch Steve's small engine saloon on how to tune a weedeater .. he knows his stuff....
Should start.
lol sounds like it was running to me
I was using my Ryobi when I heard a loud pop. What happens when you leave the choke on, I may have left it open? I tried pulling the string, it has less to almost no resistance.
Usually if you leave it on Full Choke it will just die- I am not sure what would cause a loud pop like that. Could be interesting to take it apart and see
@@findoutDIY I took it apart, I didn't see anything. I thought it had a timing belt like the 4 Cycle but it does not.
Replaced carb and spark plug and it still struggles to run??
@@steelhanded11 This could be from too much air/not enough fuel (running lean), or too much fuel/ not enough air (running rich). Many carburetors have an adjustment screw (or 2), but it doesn't seem like this one does. Another easy thing to try is adjusting the throttle cable slightly in both directions while running it. Also, make sure you have new fuel
@@findoutDIY Thanks.. I ended up changing out the fuel filter and that was the fix.. Sucks buying a new carb get but not it sounds like it did the first day out of the box.. lol
That’s not fixing it that’s replacing it
No, you fixed the engine by replacing the carburetor.
Mines the same lol
